Editor’s Letter Community efforts

It’s great to see how much local people put into their community – in this area we have many fabulous community initiatives – from yarn bombers in Aldbourne, to festival organisers in Manton, to the Youth Club in Marlborough to name but a few. There are all sorts of things – arts of all kinds, sports, environment, charity fundraising, networking – the list is endless. All available through the tireless efforts of those who organise and help run them on a voluntary basis. Marlborough Town and Country is always happy to support initiatives through publicity – so don’t forget if you have an event to let us know about it in plenty of time for inclusion in What’s On, or if you have a regular meeting or group, let us know for inclusion in our community information section. Hope you have a great month, and that all the mums out there get thoroughly spoiled on Mother’s Day!

People

Yvonne Hamlett Yvonne Hamlett is Head Chef at Marlborough Golf Club. She lives in Ludgershall, near her daughter Zoe, and granddaughter Erin. Are you from Marlborough originally? No, I was brought up in Birmingham, I moved to the area last August to be near my daughter, and for the job at Marlborough Golf Club. What were you doing before that? I ran a pub called The Peacock in Oxhill, not far from Stratford upon Avon. My main role was in the kitchen, but it was a 24/7, seven days a week job. It won a lot of awards, including Cotswold Dining Pub of the Year, as well as an award for our approach to Free From foods. I loved it but after a few years was ready to do something that allowed me a little more time with my family. Have you always worked in the pub trade? No, but always with food. I originally trained as a Home Economist with a degree in Food and Food Science. I bought my first restaurant in 1987, and have had various businesses including running the catering arm of several Golf Clubs. When I was working freelance I had some interesting experiences including a stint presenting Farmhouse Kitchen for Yorkshire TV, and preparing food for professional photography. I’ve also written about food for women’s magazines and done quite

6

a lot on the radio. My main focus has always been food though and I really enjoy producing excellent food from fresh, local, seasonal ingredients that people appreciate. What attracted you to the position at Marlborough Golf Club? I have good experience running the food side of Golf Clubs, and this job offered the opportunity to make a real difference. There is ample scope to grow the business here. What have you done since you came here? I’ve reorganised the menus, ensuring that all the produce we use is fresh, seasonal and from local suppliers. The menu changes with each season, and in addition we always have specials, so that you can be sure of a good variety on the menu. I’ve made sure there are good vegetarian options, as well as being able to cater for those with allergies, so we can cope with gluten free, dairy free, egg free etc. It’s a big help if people let us know when they

book that they have special dietary requirements, so that we not only ensure that we have suitable dishes, but also make sure there is no danger of cross contamination in the kitchen. I think it is so important to cater for all needs, and have been a real champion of Free From options over the years. The Sunday Carvery is popular, and I’m a stickler for ensuring that the food is cooked fresh throughout the afternoon, so you are not just getting food that has been cooked and kept warm. We always have a choice of three meats, and lots of seasonal vegetables. We have a lot of functions here, from corporate networking breakfasts, through birthday parties, up to weddings. This is a lovely setting for a wedding, and I really enjoy working with wedding parties, whether they plan a long time in advance or within a few weeks of getting married. I like to take the stress out of planning the catering for the couple. I’ve also introduced themed nights, so for example in

People February we had Pies and Puddings night, and in April, on St George’s Day (23 April) we are having A Taste of England. These are open to everyone. What challenges do you face? I think one of the key challenges is to make people aware that the Restaurant and Bar are open to all, not just to the members of the Golf Club. We need to raise awareness that we are a good place to pop in for lunch. The views are stunning, and provide a fabulous backdrop to a pleasant meal with friends or colleagues. Parking is plentiful and free, no worrying about how much time is left on your ticket! You can be assured of delicious food, I have been thrilled with the feedback I have been getting from diners, the new menu has been very successful. What do you enjoy about your job? I love the sheer variety, there is always something different going on. I’m not always behind the scenes in the kitchen, I like being able to get to know people. With regulars I get to know their likes and dislikes, and enjoy knowing how they like their food without them having to ask. It’s good to be at the sharp end, I can listen to comments and if something needs improving or changing I can do something about it. On the food side I am really passionate about food and like the chance to create traditional food with a twist. I like researching recipes and seeing how I can put a modern spin on them. I am a fairly instinctive cook – I always say cooking is part science, part art!

Anything you would change? I can honestly say no there isn’t. The hours are long, but that goes with being in catering, and compared to running a pub it is a breeze, and also less stressful. What inspired you to work in the catering industry? I was always encouraged to cook by my greatgrandmother and grandmother, and always enjoyed helping them in the kitchen. I found I had a flair for putting my own twist on recipes, and so it made sense to follow a career in something I love. What do you do in your spare time? What little of it I have I tend to spend with my daughter and my 4 year-old granddaughter. Erin comes over for sleepovers with me, we have a great time together. She enjoys going to the cinema, and we like to eat out – unusually for a 4 year-old she is particularly fond of sushi. We sometimes visit Yo Sushi! In Southampton – I have to keep her away from the conveyor belt or I would spend a fortune! Moving to this area has been fantastic, as I have got to spend a lot more time with my family. I also enjoy making Novelty Cakes for birthdays and so on. I love modelling in fondant icing to create characters and scenes – for instance The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and Olaf from Frozen. I particularly like using chocolate, as it’s quite a versatile ingredient and tastes nicer than fondant icing when you eat it.

What sort of food do you enjoy? Fish is a particular favourite of mine, and I enjoy risottos and stir fries. As I live on my own I enjoy meals that are simple and quick to make, but still full of flavour. Where I can I use low calorie alternatives, so I don’t over indulge. You know what they say though – never trust a skinny chef! What are you reading at the moment? I’m spending quite a lot of time reading cookbooks at the moment – researching traditional recipes. For fiction reading I enjoy athors such as Wilbur Smith, Martina Cole and so on. I’m also partial to a bit of poetry, I have a book of poems by Leonard Cohen. Music is more my thing. What sort of music do you like? I love rock music. In my youth I went to a lot of concerts – Queen were one of my favourites, I think I saw one of their first ever concerts (when I was very young!) I’ve probably seen them about seventeen times. I also saw Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5, and David Bowie several times amongst many others. I still enjoy going to concerts, and festivals such as Cropredy. Finally – do you enjoy a round of golf? I do possess some golf clubs, but don’t really get time to play. I am quite competitive, so would want to play to quite a high standard – unfortunately I don’t have enough time to get that good! Marlborough Choir Sings for Brighter Futures Many people in our local area require radiotherapy treatment for cancer, only to find that there is no hospital nearby with the facilities. Marlborough Community Choir leader, Vanessa Lafaye, has personal experience of this. ‘After my surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer in 2010, I had a choice between Bath, Bristol, or Oxford for radiotherapy. I was astounded that a population centre the size of Swindon didn’t have its own facility.’ Radiotherapy must be given every day, usually for several weeks, so it is easy to imagine the impact of this hardship, just at the worst time for many patients. As Vanessa says, ‘The 80-mile daily round trip to Oxford, through the snow and ice of a hard winter, was exactly the last thing I needed at that point in my life. I know of so many people in the same position.’ So when she heard that plans were under way to build a treatment centre at the Great Western Hospital, she immediately sought to harness the choir’s fundraising capacity. ‘Over four years, we raised almost £5000 for Comic Relief with our concerts, and we’ve raised hundreds for the

Jubilee Centre. This seemed like the ideal cause to support next.’

in February to take part in the final of the Barnardo’s National Choir competition at the Royal Festival Hall. The choir, consisting of 29 girls from Years 8-13 and directed by Max More, St John’s Director of Performance, had won the previous round to reach the highly competitive final.

Throughout 2015, the choir raised almost £2000 for the GWH Brighter Futures appeal, which is seeking to raise £2.9 million. The next big fundraising event for the choir is a concert on March 11th 7:30pm in St Peter’s church, featuring the choir plus two other local acapella groups. Vanessa says, ‘The event is free entry, but we’re hoping that people will bring plenty of cash to spend on our scrumptious cake smorgasbord. We love it when people bring kids, because they eat a lot of cake!’ There will also be a collecting bucket for the charity on the night. Full details of the concert are on

St John’s choir reaches national competition finals The St John’s Academy Choir travelled to London

The choir found themselves up against stiff opposition from schools across the UK. Despite not winning the competition, the final was a great experience for the students, who all enjoyed performing at a major national venue. In getting through to the finals, the St John’s choir had pushed out several other choirs that had regularly been finalists in previous years. Mr More is very proud of the choir’s achievement. “I was immensely proud of what the girls achieved” he said. “They have been telling me for weeks that it would all be OK on the day, and it most certainly was! For a choir that has only been in existence for just over a year, and with limited rehearsal time, we have done commendably well. As ambassadors for St John’s, the students were simply exemplary. For a number of the Sixth Form choir members this was their last performance before their examination schedules take over; I wish them every success and thank them for their fantastic contribution to the choir....”.

Shopmobility

We are delighted to confirm that we will be working alongside the Area Board and The Mobility Store, at the George Lane Car Park to launch a Shopmobility Scheme. With funding from both councils this exciting community-based project will benefit both local residents and visitors to the town. It’s a service that helps those with mobility problems (whether through disability, illness or injury) to get around independently without having to rely on friends or family. For an annual membership fee, the scheme offers the hire of powered scooters or wheelchairs at low daily rates to use for shopping and other activities around town. Organisers are hoping the project can be run with volunteers. If you think you would like to help, please contact either Shelley Parker from Marlborough Town Council on 01672 512487 or Andrew Jack from Marlborough Area Board on 01225 713109.

Macular Society At the end of January, our Mayor visited Marlborough’s Macular Support Group, a local self-help group run for people with macular conditions. She presented a cheque for £500 to Group

Leader, Linda Chapman - funding awarded by the Town Council under its Small Grants Scheme and will be used for visits and social activities. The group meets at the Wesley Hall on the last Thursday of each month from 1.30 - 3.30 pm and offers practical and emotional support to those suffering from various macular conditions including agerelated macular degeneration - an eye condition causing the loss of central vision usually in both eyes and the largest cause of sight loss in the developed world. The group is currently looking for a new Secretary and other volunteers who would be willing to help organise activities and visits. However, there are measures that we are having to take both to protect the safety of the public and the overall health of the trees. All trees on Town Council-owned land are inspected every three years - we are responsible for about 1,500 in all. During this inspection, they are examined by a qualified aboriculturalist and assessed for what pest or disease might be present. On The Common, Dutch Elm Disease and Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner have been identified and after years of being weakened, action is being taken to combat any further spread. We will be looking to replace some of the felled trees. More information is available at www.marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk

Leave your children a lifetime of memories Have you ever wished you knew more about your family? I know my great grandfather was involved in building Carnegie Hall in New York, but don’t know any of the details of how he, a roofer from Manchester, happened to become involved in the creation of such a famous landmark. It wasn’t common for people to work away from their home town in those days, never mind across the Atlantic. Imagine if he had left his life story so future generations knew how he came to have such an exciting adventure. Memoirs until now have been associated with the famous and the noteworthy, usually those that justify a print run at a publishing house, with their biographies gracing the shelves of bookshops throughout the land. But what if we could all have our autobiography printed, for our own enjoyment and that of our family and their descendants? Two local women, Helen Sheehan and Lissa Gibbins, have formed a partnership that will deliver just that. Aide Memoire takes the stress out of producing what could become a treasured heirloom. Helen explains “It started with my writing my father’s memoirs for him. He is a retired military man, and wanted to record his life and experiences for posterity. When chatting about it with Lissa one day it

14

Helen and Lissa from Aide Memoire

occurred to us that there would be other people that would like to do the same, but wouldn’t have the confidence to write it themselves, and so the idea for Aide Memoire was born” Both Helen and Lissa have publishing experience, and understand what it takes to put a book together. Their plan is to ghost write people’s autobiographies through a series of interviews, with writing taking place between each one so the subject can review progress at each stage. At the end of the interview process the manuscript will be comprehensively edited, and compiled into a book together with any images or family trees required. “We think this will be an enjoyable process for the person involved. Most people like talking about their memories, and we will help them do so in a structured way that can then be turned into something that they and their family can enjoy for a long time to come” says Lissa, “Everyone has an interesting story to tell, and we expect to be working with a broad spectrum of people, both men and women, who want to record their memories. We envisage this being a local service as we think it will work best when we can conduct the interviews in person, building up a good relationship with our subject”.

Depending on how long the final book is, the process involves anything from 4 to 8 two hour interviews, over 4 to 9 weeks. Writing, editing, compilation and proof reading are all included in the process as well as the production of the final product, an impressive hardback book. The time involved in writing the memoirs make them a significant investment. “We understand that this is a very personal thing for anyone to do, and are committed to providing a completely confidential and quality service. We offer a free consultation at the start of the process to talk through how everything works and to make sure that the subject feels confident with working with us before committing” Helen explains “We want them to be happy that we will produce an interesting account of their life in their own voice, not just a dry record of dates and events. We feel that far from being a vanity project, a personal autobiography will provide a fascinating snapshot of a life. Certainly, in writing my father’s memoirs I have learnt so much about him that I would not otherwise have known.” If you are interested in finding out more about Aide Memoire, contact either Lissa on 07974 430965, or Helen on 07584 252655

Would you like a happy and well trained gundog? Are you looking to train your dog to go out on a shoot or just want to train him to a high level of basic obedience? If so then these classes in Marlborough may be just what you are looking for. Starting with good manners, the basic training foundation course, you can train your gundog through a series of levels culminating with the Kennel Club’s Working Gundog Certificate. The foundation class is all about basic obedience, good manners and an introduction to the puppy retrieve. We then take it up a level with different retrieves introduced as well as basic whistle work. We then go on to extend the retrieving skills and bring in direction control, hunting in cover and more advanced whistle commands. The penultimate level introduces the jump pen, gunshot as well as working your dog in cover at distance.

Culminating in the finishing touches in preparation for a simulated shoot, testing steadiness hunting with other dogs and retrieving from water. Contact Jill for more information about these exciting training courses held on the outskirts of Marlborough.

Back to the Future? The 30th anniversary of the much loved film, “Back to the Future” a couple of months ago led me to nostalgia. So, what was I doing then and how has life changed? In 1985 I was preparing for O Levels at an all girls comprehensive school where the focus was very much on academic success and being equal to boys. Girls were encouraged to go into the “professions” and, short of a quick chat with a careers officer (who, incidentally laughed at my suggestion of being a lawyer), off we went without a single thought as to whether this was what we really wanted. (Give me my time again and I might have at least considered Kirsty Allsop’s career!) My daughter is the same age as I was when Back to the Future first came out and history is repeating itself, (although I hadn’t quite appreciated back then what a stressful ride it is for parents as well as the child). She is looking to the future and a career after school. I am pleased to say however, that the support and help that she is receiving at school is light years better than I had. On attending the parents’ GCSE options information evening, Mr Smith from St John’s said that most of our children will end up working in jobs which have not even been created yet. How right he is. Who would have ever known when I was at school that you could

16

would be able to do a degree in Brewing and Distilling, Surf Science and Technology (my son will love this one!) or even Ethical Hacking? It is also fascinating that the “one career for life” assumption is no more and that it is likely that our children will change path several times over their working lives. With so many options out there, there are new pressures on our children. How do they stand out from the crowd, what should they do and how should they do it? After all, a degree is not always the best route to the career of your dreams. At school now the students are given great opportunities to understand and prepare a CV with a keen focus on how to keep it out of the scrutineer’s bin. There are mock interviews in March and there is work experience week in June as well as fantastic continual careers support and regular careers fairs. I am from one of the very old “professions” and very much enjoy attending the

careers fairs to talk to pupils about what I do. I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone to come and talk to the students about their career to give them a wide range of ideas to strive for. Alternatively, you could offer your services to help with the mock interviews. Helping the students with this is not only fulfilling but oh so educational. It is absolutely fascinating to see and hear from these bright lights of the future what they want to do and just how they plan to do it. By the 60th anniversary of Back to the Future, I will have retired but I hope that, as well as a love for a classic film, my children’s children are facing a bright future after school. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Beauty

Relax in a rural setting Filomena Pugh of Idoleyes Beauty welcomes clients from as far afield as Bristol and Witney to her selfcontained salon operated from her home in Bishopstone, overlooking the Wiltshire Downs. “Most of my clients are from the surrounding area, but I have several that travel to see me. Usually it’s because they have a recommendation from one of their friends. It’s good to know that exisiting clients are happy to send their friends to me.” Filomena set up her clinic after the lease on her previous premises ran out. “It made sense to work from home, as I have a personal and private space with its own entrance, no problems with parking and the opportunity to be flexible with hours” Idoleyes Beauty offers a comprehensive range of beauty treatments, one of which is Environ skincare, which the Sunday Times described as “the latest obsession at the school gate” “Environ is a skincare regime using vitamin A as a key ingredient.” Explains Filomena “I’ve been offering it for just over a year now, and have been amazed at the results. It consists of three elements which can be used together or separately. First the skincare products, which have different levels of vitamin A in them, people start on a lower level and increase as the skin

18

acclimatises. Secondly, Environ facials, which use ultrasound and electric current to enable the products to penetrate the epidermis. Finally, there is the advanced nutrition programme which provides high quality supplements to nourish the skin from within” Because vitamin A is quite powerful, it is important that clients are advised by a trained professional after an initial skin analysis. None of the products are available over the counter. “Environ is great for antiageing, but is also fantastic for conditions such as acne and rosacea,” says Filomena, “It’s good for men as well as women. My husband has been using it, and he has been surprised that clients of his have commented on his appearance, one even going so far as to ask him if he’s “had any work done?” Idoleyes also recommends Jane Iredale mineral makeup, which is a high quality makeup with no harmful

chemicals and proven not to block pores. Whilst being lightweight the coverage is so good that it is often recommended by doctors for use after laser resurfacing. “I have three daughters, all of whom love makeup and skincare. Part of the reason that I trained in beauty therapy was so that I could pass on my knowledge to them so that they could look after their skin from a young age, minimising the damage caused by the sun. I wish that I had known at their age that 90% of skin damage is caused by the environment, and that there are ways to prevent much of it, not least wearing a good quality sunscreen every day”. “My favourite part of what I do is seeing the difference treatments make for people, it’s very rewarding to make people happy!” says Filomena For more information on the full range of treatments offered at Idoleyes visit www.idoleyesbeauty.co.uk or call Filomena on 07748 905292

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a precious lands

Getting here

The simple beauty of the North Wessex Downs has captured the imaginations of writers and TV/film producers alike. Samuel Pepys, Richard Jefferies, Edward Thomas and John Betjeman all wrote about the area. The National Trust’s Basildon Park near Pangbour ne with its impressive Georgian mansion was the setting for the 2005 feature film of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

The North Wessex Downs is the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty around Marlborough. Big openIt “with theirskiesis the third largestA AONB most visibly panoramic in the country. Did“ ancien you views t know landscape “ that it stretches right the“way over to Wittenham Clumps in South Oxfordshire and includes Watership Down in North Hampshire?

After a long, wet though relatively mild winter the days are getting longer and there is plenty to enjoy in our local landscape. Delivered along with your Marlborough Town and Country magazine this month is a copy of the North Wessex Downs Visitor Guide which opens out to show the map inside along with a guide to things to do and places to see.

g.uk

All venues quoted here are open to their own timetables and should be checked before making visits.

Public transport is an environmenta llyfriendly and cost-effective option. The area benefits from a network of innovative bus services which will take you out into the more remote parts of the area. You can “dial-on-dema nd” to book some services. For more information on getting around the North Wessex Downs by bus, coach and train visit www.travelin e.com. There are over 900 miles of footpaths – we recommend some excellent walks on our website.

Canal holidays are a relaxing way of enjoying the area. The main towns all have companies offering narrow boat hire.

For accommodation visit: www.our-land.co.uk

The amazing scenery is also an argument for taking to the saddle, with plenty of opportunities whether you are a beginner or an owner wanting somewhere to stay with stables. Or how about touring the profusion of quiet country lanes and byways by bike? The National Cycling Network route 4 is one of the most pleasant ways to explore the North Wessex Downs, following the Kennet & Avon Canal out of Reading to Newbury, Hungerford, Bedwyn and Pewsey to Devizes.

The guide highlights the iconic features that make this area so special including Savernake Forest, Wilton Windmill, the Kennet and Avon Canal, Avebury and Combe Gibbet (just south of Hungerford Common). However, you might discover some new places to explore such as the Iron Age fort at Barbury that affords views as far as the Cotswolds and the river Severn or Ashdown House an unusual property built for the Queen of Bohemia in 1662. If you are planning days out over with the family over Easter the guide has plenty of ideas. Bucklebury farm Park is a 70 acre farm with a lovely nature walk through woods and over boardwalks to explore plants and animals.

More recently, Highclere Castle has achieved national fame as the location for the hugely popular ITV series Downton Abbey. Avebury Manor came to fame in 2011 as part of a TV transformation which makes it and its gardens well worth seeing as part of a visit to the mystical stone circle. The National Trust cares for Ashdown House near Lambourn with its unusual dolls’ house appearance and for Sir Stanley Spencer’s striking pictures of First World War Salonika filling a small chapel at Burghclere.

Discover The North NORTH WESSEX DOW NS AREA OF OUTSTANDIN G NATUR AL BEAUT Wessex Y Downs also includes large expanses of open downland such as the Lambourn valley. On Good Friday, more than 30 racehorse trainers open their yards to the public to visitors can meet the horses and trainers and gain a unique insight into the Lambourn racing industry as part of the Lambourn Show.

Stand on the top of the Downs and you could be many miles from anywhere. But the reality is that, given their central location, the North Wessex Downs are actually very accessible . While there are only two modest-si zed market towns, the Downs have much larger towns like Reading, Swindon, Newbury, Basingsto Andover, Devizes and ke, Didcot at their gateways , with no fewer than eight railway stations in the area and 12 others nearby.

Simply w

Digging down

The Lambourn valley is one of Britain’s most prolific centres for training racehorses, so you may well come across some very expensive horse flesh in your travels – or watch them compete at Newbury Racecourse. You can also fish on the Kennet, Lambourn, Pang and Avon. If you want to set your pulse racing a little faster, you could try paragliding, kiteboarding and canoeing or take to the skies in a hot air balloon. Picturesque downland villages each have their own attractions which often include a fine church and sometimes a thatched country pub. Towns like Hungerford (famous for its antiques) and Marlborough with its impressive Georgian High Street and annual jazz festival have much to offer, especially on market days. Savernake Forest is only just outside Marlborough and is great for walks and picnics. The Kennet & Avon Canal meanders all the way through the area. It’s worth taking time out from your stroll to admire the steam-powered engineering at the Crofton Pumping Station which is the highest point on the canal and lifts water 400 feet (122m) from the river.

If you love all that is best in the British countryside, you cannot fail to

Gardening

March in the Garden Although spring is officially upon us after the 21st of this month, we hardly seem to have had a winter. Lots of rain but no long cold spell. We even had daffodils flowering in January. You will need to extra vigilant looking out for pests and diseases this year as warmer winters unfortunately tend to result in plants suffering from increased attack. Keep seed trays and tools as clean as possible and remove any diseased looking leaves from plants. Make sure plants are well fed with well rotted compost in borders and with plant feed in pots and the greenhouse. Healthy plants will have a much better chance of resisting diseases or the effects of pests. Take appropriate action at the first signs to prevent spread or further damage to plants March is one of the busiest months in the garden as it is the ideal time to start seed sowing, propagating and planting. It is also a good time to spruce up your borders and pots because new growth will be starting to show so any of last years debris can be easily removed. Work your way round the garden starting with tidying up trees and shrubs. Cut out any dead, diseased or damaged wood and lightly prune to shape. Buddleia and Cornus can be cut back hard to promote fresh growth and trim back yellow flowering jasmine to keep the plant to a manageable size. Evergreen hedges and topiary can be lightly trimmed to keep them in shape and tidy. Roses both shrub and climbing can be pruned, cut out any dead or diseased wood before applying rose fertilizer around

32

the base of the plant. Cut back any perennials and grasses left over winter to reveal this year’s fresh new growth, there is still time to divide and replant any tired or overcrowded perennials and remember to put some stakes in for the taller growing perennials so they can be tied in as they grow. Autumn sown sweet peas can be planted outside now and any gaps in the borders can be filled by sowing hardy annual seeds providing variety and colour for minimal cost. Sow the seeds in drifts for best effect covering with a light layer of soil and water in. Towards the end of March some summer flowering bulbs such as Gladioli, Alliums, Lilies and Iris can be planted. Lawns should be given some attention in March to ensure good growth and fewer weeds. Rake over the lawn with a lawn rake to remove any debris, moss and old grass, dig out completely any perennial weeds before aerating with a garden fork to about half a fork’s depth to improve drainage. Re seed any bare patches and finally apply a suitable spring feed and weed lawn fertilizer. If the weather is fine, March is also a good time to sow a new lawn as it will have time to establish before the heat of the summer. In the greenhouse Dahlia tubers ca be potted up and

once the shoots start to appear take some cuttings to increase stock. Half hardy annuals can be sown in seed trays ready to plant out when the temperatures increase. Check on Geraniums and Fuchsia’s over wintered in the greenhouse taking off any dead or diseased parts to prevent any build up of disease. Early sowing s of vegetables and salad crops can be started off in the greenhouse. On sunny, warm days open windows or doors slightly for ventilation but remember to close them again at night as there is still the chance of frost. Any water features or ponds should be given a spring clean removing any weeds or algae and check pumps are in good working order before reconnecting. Outside in the vegetable garden start sowing vegetables and plant early potatoes. Weather changes can be treacherous at this time of year so keep an eye on the weather forecast and don’t carry out any major tasks if a heavy frost is forecast. Continue to keep bird baths and feeders topped up as we approach the busiest breeding season for birds and a reliable source of food and water can be vital for success. By Jill Blackwood

Divorce – is the process finally coming into the 21st Century? It is estimated that 50% of all marriages will end in divorce. That is a sad statistic but made fact by modern values, changing attitudes to equality, financial independence and of course the internet. However modern our lifestyle, family law is governed by legislation granted in 1973. And despite two attempts to review this situation, the position remains the same. Currently the Courts allow couples to divorce if they can demonstrate that their marriage has broken down irretrievably. This they can do by relying on five facts: Adultery, unreasonable behaviour, (which are considered fault based reasons), two years separation with agreement to divorce, two years desertion, and finally five years separation with no need to have agreement to apply for Divorce. Most people who decide to go their separate ways do not want to wait two years as they are in agreement that the marriage is over and wish to get on with the process and start new lives.

36

The current average time to complete a non-complicated divorce is 6-9 months, with those involving complicated financial settlements taking over 12 months. Having said that, my previous article mentioned the frustration of the combined Southampton Divorce Centre delays so these timescales are merely estimated. A survey carried out by Resolution in June 2015 found that over half of all divorce petitions were fault based, filed by people who didn’t wish to wait two years or more to get divorced, or whose other half didn’t consent to the divorce. Of those petitions, 27% said that the fault alleged wasn’t true but was the easiest option to get the process over and done with quickly. At DGR Law, we often have to write a Statement of Case citing unreasonable behaviour which our Clients feel uneasy about bringing to the attention of the Court. It often causes even more upset than the Divorce itself. The good news is that there may a glimmer of modernisation on the horizon in the form of the No Fault Divorce Bill championed by Richard Bacon MP which has its second reading in Parliament in March 2016. Countries such as USA and Spain presently have a No Fault Divorce process which seems to work well. The proposed amendment would enable couples to send a joint petition to the court, and proceed to decree nisi stage relatively quickly. However, there would be a 12-month ‘cooling off’ period before

decree absolute can be made. This would apply to Civil Partnerships as well. There is wide support for these reforms including support from this firm who often see couples who have simply grown apart and moved on without each other and would like to part amicably and quickly. We shall wait and see and will be sure to keep readers updated. On another note DGR Law have now become members of Resolution Org UK, formerly known as the Solicitors Family Law Association, an organisation of 6,500 family lawyers and other professionals in England and Wales, who believe in a constructive, nonconfrontational approach to family law matters. Resolution also campaigns for improvements to the family justice system. We look forward to working with them to improve our service and our support of Clients, old and new. Karen Salmon DGR Law
