www.doric.com.au >> facebook.com/doricracing >> twitter.com/doricracing >> 7 2014 brought some big changes for Will Davison. A switch to new V8 Supercar team Erebus Motorsport was not without its risks, but after almost 12 months with the team, Will is proving to everyone that he made the right move. Will’s 15 top ten finishes so far this year is a vast improvement on the team’s 3 top tens in 2013. Breaking through for his first podium in the E63 Mercedes Benz at Townsville in July, Will has proven the new AMG Supercar is the real deal. In one of the #9 cars most promising races so far, Will was challenging the championship leaders at the front of the field at Phillip Island. And if not for a hold up in pit lane, was looking in contention for another podium. “It’s a great time of the year to be having good results like this because what we learn sets us up well for next year,” said Will. “We are still pretty inconsistent, and that’s because we’re throwing so much at it to make things better all the time. “Some things work, some don’t and we go up and down the field, but that’s what you have to do to have these kinds of breakthroughs. We learn so much every time we hit the track and always take something away that we can use next time.”

Mark Winterbottom is determined to be the wedge driving his Holden rivals apart at the top of the Championship table. But the battle is set to go right down to the wire this weekend at Sydney. While the Championship is already wrapped up, the fight for second place remains wide open, with Winterbottom leading Lowndes by 95 points heading into the weekend. Winterbottom has a mixed record at the Sydney track, with a win on the board from 2011 marred by a number of incidents at the unpredictable track. “It’s good to be going to Sydney because it’s a home race but I’m not sure how we’ll go,” said Winterbottom. “We’ve struggled on street circuits this year a bit so now is the time to try a few different things to see if we can improve it. Adelaide next year is very similar so we need a good result so that it gives us some confidence going into 2015. “We are also aiming to cement our second place finish in the championship. Obviously we’re disappointed we haven’t won but if we can finish second that’s the next best thing. We still have a lot to race for and hopefully at my home track we can get a good result.”

CHAZ MOSTERT LOOKS TO ROUND OUT A BRILLIANT SEASON ON A HIGH>>

www.doric.com.au >> facebook.com/doricracing >> twitter.com/doricracing >> 11

It’s difficult to fathom how just 18 months ago, Chaz Mostert burst onto the V8 Supercar Championship scene. The 22-year-old has no doubt made his mark in his short time in the main game series, with an impressive tally of wins, including the a momentous victory in the Bathurst 1000. Since he was promoted to the Ford factory team at the start of the year, Chaz has accrued eight podium finishes. But the young gun has one more box he is determined to tick in 2014; a top five finish in the championship “Sydney is obviously the last round

of the year and you always want to finish your last event quite strong,” said Mostert. “We’ll be aiming to get a few last minute championship points to try for that top five in the championship. “Homebush is a very hard track and has the highest stats for the most wrecked cars and DNFs so it’s one you’ve got to survive or you could really hurt your championship position. The first goal is just to finish every race and the second goal is to finish in the top five so we’ll see how we go. I didn’t go so well there last year so we’ll go in with a different approach and see how we end up.”

12 >> Doric Racer >> Sydney Olympic Park 2014 What a year John Bowe has had! The Doric Ambassador claimed his third Touring Car Masters Championship victory last month at Phillip Island. Setting a new series record with seven pole positions in 2014 was the icing on the cake, after also winning the Bathurst 12 Hour in February. “It’s been a great year,” said Bowe. “Seven poles, lots of good battles and a lot of the racing was as good as I’ve ever experienced.” “It’s been a lot of fun out there and the competition was fierce right to the end. “Winning isn’t everything to me anymore, but I’ve loved the hard, clean racing. “I’ve had more fun this year than I’ve had in my entire career.” Bowe took a swag of wins over the season, finishing with a healthy lead over Jim Richards after his rival was forced to withdraw from the final round. “The support I’ve had throughout the year has been great. I couldn’t do what I do without all our great sponsors and having partners like the guys at Doric make it a lot of fun. “It was a shame that Jim couldn’t race with us over the weekend. I really felt for him.”But we’ll both be back for another round next year!”

2014 has seen a big change for you, Will. Can you tell us a little about it? It’s certainly been a new challenge. Switching teams to join the new kids on the block was a big move. But we saw so many things we loved about Erebus. The whole team is so passionate. From Betty - the team owner - to the mechanics on the cars, they’re all here for the right reasons and want the same things for the team. It’s no doubt been a massive learning curve throughout the year, as I figured out the car’s strengths and limitations. We just kept trying new things and while some worked, some didn’t, so things have been up and down on the results side. But we’re definitely improving, which is really exciting. You took your first podium with the team mid-way through the year in Townsville. Did you expect more to come after that? I think everyone at the team would have loved those podiums to keep coming, but we don’t just want podium finishes, we want wins. The guys we’re competing against have been perfecting their cars and the way they run things for years and years, so we have to keep trying new things to get an edge over them. We won’t just settle for second best. If there’s a way we can go faster, we want to find it. I feel like we’re really nipping on the heels of the fastest cars out there now. At Phillip Island, my car was comfortably quicker than Frosty and Jamie and if not for a hiccup in the pits, we would have been right up there with them. I like to think those teams would be getting a bit nervous about us now [laughs]. What do you envision for the team in 2015? Well, I really think we’re on the edge of a big breakthrough with the cars. We are learning more about the chassis every race we go to. There has been a lot of trial and error trying to understand it but I feel we have a really good starting platform at most circuits next year. We have a deficit with the engine the team is working really hard on and I have faith that in the offseason we can find some gains and it won’t take much for us to consistently be podium contenders. All the teams and drivers will step it up again next year and we’ll have the new players like Penske, so it will be tough out there, but I think we’re ready to really step up too. We’ll certainly give it a red-hot go!

What a year you’ve had, JB! Can you tell us a little about it? I started the season at the Clipsal round in Touring Car Masters with a slightly different mindset this year. I made a pact with myself to not get too stressed about the internal politics of the series. Politics exists in every motor racing category and it’s easy to let that take over. But I just took on the season with an enjoyment level that I haven’t had for the last couple of years. I just wanted to enjoy it. It allowed me to drive better because I freed myself up from worrying about politics. Mustang Sally had pole at every single round and set a new lap record at every track this year. I wanted to do that to give Steve Makarios from Synergy Race engines that kudos because he’s taken over the engines and prep of the car and he does such a good job at it. The competition looked pretty tough out there this year. How did it compare to previous years? The competition in the category was definitely much stronger. The driving and also the preparation got a lot stronger. It’s been getting stronger and stronger since the category started, but it took a big jump this year. I really enjoyed the challenge. I don’t race to win, I race to just feel like I’ve done my best. Next year sometime I’ll achieve 1000 race starts and I’ve won hundreds, so that’s not part of it anymore. What I like is being competitive and racing cleanly. The highlight of any day, week or year is when I’m driving a race car. I’m enjoying it more than I have in my entire career. You’ve had quite a long career. To what do you credit your longevity? I’m blessed to be able to do what I do. I’m very proud of my little group of supporters, including Doric. I certainly couldn’t do it without them. This is my eighth year as part of the Doric family. During that time I’ve developed some wonderful relationships with not only the Doric people but their customers around the country. While I have the chance, I’d also like to acknowledge the work, effort and friendship of Tom Arciuli, who has done an outstanding job in his role as marketing manager for Doric. He’s a really good operator and I’ll miss him terribly.

1 Clipsal 500 Adelaide Mark Winterbottom was off to a solid start to the 2014 season, netting two 4th place finishes and a 12th at a dramatic opening round at Adelaide. 2 Tyrepower Tasmania 400 Continuing to lay the solid foundations of his 2014 Championship attack, Winterbottom left Tasmania with two podium finishes and a good haul of points. 3 Winton 400 Winton was the scene of Winterbottom’s first win of the season. A 2nd and 7th also saw the Ford star move to second in the Championship. 4 ITM 500 Auckland Winterbottom stamped his authority on the championship fight with a double victory at Pukekohe in April. Frosty walked away from the round with three podiums and the series lead. 5 Perth 400 Having only dropped out of the top ten in one of the 16 races so far, Winterbottom was in full flight at Perth, netting two more podium finishes and a swag of points. 6 Skycity Triple Crown Darwin Blinding consistency was payng off for Winterbottom by mid-way through the season, holding onto the championship lead for the third round straight thanks to his fourth win of the season. 7 Castrol Edge Townsville 500 Despite some qualifying woes, Winterbottom fought back for two top ten finishes at Townsville and maintained his series lead of almost 100 points. 8 Coates Hire Ipswich 400 Two sixth places on Saturday at Ipswich wasn’t enough to keep Winterbottom in the lead of the champion after a tyre puncture on Sunday saw him finish 22nd, 15 points behind Whincup. 9 Sydney Motorsport Park 400 More qualifying woes saw Winterbottom forced to fight back through the field in treacherous race conditions at Sydney. Despite his best efforts, the Ford driver dropped 135 points behind. 10 Wilson Security Sandown 500 Winterbotom and co-driver Steve Owen endured a tough day at Sandown in September, battling an ill-handling car over the 500km race to salvage 10th place. 11 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 In an epic Bathurst battle, Winterbottom was in contention to win the great race again, until the closing laps, where he was spun off the road by Craig Lowndes, and had to settle for 6th. 12 Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600 Some average qualifying results made the Gold Coast a difficult round for Winterbottom and Owen, fighting through to take fourth place on Saturday, and 14th on Sunday. 13 Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400 Frosty fought back from a disappointing 24th place on Saturday morning to take two podiums at Phillip Island. His efforts mean he is heading to Sydney 2nd in the Championship with almost 100 points to spare over Craig Lowndes.

22 >> Doric Racer >> Sydney Olympic Park 2014 All three Doric racers are heading into the weekend’s final round at Sydney Olympic Park with a point to prove. The boys in the FPR camp are determined to finish on a high, and have their eyes on 2nd and 5th places in the championship. Will Davison is coming off the back of a very positive race at Phillip Island and is determined to keep the momentum going at Sydney. Off the back of a solid result at Phillip Island, Winterbottom is also on cue for a strong showing this weekend. But the Homebush circuit has a reputation for unpredictability. 38 cars have fallen victim to the track over the past three years. Wild weather has reared its head in the past, with searing heat and torrential rain pushing drivers to their limits. The skinny concrete canyon is unforgiving at the best of times, with small mistakes wielding big consequences. Will Davison is the current qualifying lap record holder, blitzing the circuit in 1m27.4562 in 2011. The Doric Ambassador also has a race win and two pole positions to his name at the notorious circuit. There’s been nine different winners from the 10 races held at the circuit since it first appeared on the V8 Supercars calendar in 2009. So anything could happen this weekend.

Heading into the final round of the 2013 Championship, Doric’s Ford Performance racing needed the racing gods on their side to be in the hunt for the series title. After an epic, year-long battle with fierce rivals Triple Eight, FPR went into the final round placed 3rd and 4th in the standings, over 100 points behind series leader Jamie Whincup. But as history shows, the Homebush circuit can be most unkind to those who need it most. Mark Winterbottom’s hopes of glory can to an abrupt end in Saturday’s race. After starting on the front row of the grid, things were looking promising for the Ford star, but his car sustained damage early on, before being punted into the

wall in the late stages of the race. FPR teammate Will Davison’s day panned out much better, avoiding the glut of on-track carnage to finish fifth. The result meant he also moved ahead of his teammate, into third place in the points standings. In the end, the drivers were separated by a mere six points in the championship. Running in fifth place late in the last race, Winterbottom was looking set to take the final spot on the championship podium. But in a huge last lap effort, Davison was able to pass his brother Alex for 7th place, claiming enough points to secure 3rd in the 2013 series.
