Butterflies and H.C. Ørsted At H.C. Ørsted’s birthday a specific Ørsted award is given out, the award is designed as a butterfly and created by a local artist and with a specific expression to the recipient. H.C. Ørsted was one of the first people to use the Danish word butterfly. As a citizen, you can apply for a butterfly, which you can hang on your house. The butterflies, which are the city’s new landmarks, are made at the job as an employment project. A bit of history The city’s first merchant privilege was issued in 1287, and as you walk around town, you will be pleased to see, that the city centre has avoided an industrial development and therefore today still has the old merchant environment with many well-kept old buildings. Each summer you can participate in guided tours of Rudkøbing (in Danish) with an opportunity to hear about the old buildings and the people who lived there through the time.
