2023 SOCCER

Dear Knight Nation, It is with great pride and pleasure that I join our student-athletes in extending a heartfelt “Thank you” to each one of you for your support of our athletic programs! As our teammates and campus family will readily tell you, your cheers…your dedication ….your presence….give them strength and inspiration to exceed expectations on the soccer field, in the classroom, and in life. We often talk about the “3 A’s” at Central Penn as the ingredients to an enriching college experience: 1) Athletics, 2) Academics and 3) Atmosphere. It is obvious that these three elements do not exist in a vacuum. They are all intertwined. Athletics are a key component of an inspiring educational journey and a well-rounded student experience. As Central Penn’s Athletic Director, my goal has always been to engage students and provide positive, life-changing experiences through athletics. Competing at the college level not only displays a person’s true character – it develops it. Playing college-level sports also underscores the importance of teamwork and leadership like few other chapters in a textbook can. Teaching leadership and collaboration both on and off the field will help every student not only in their academic endeavors, but in their future careers. Offense and defense, dribbling and blocking, passing and scoring—these happen in some form in the workplace as much as on a grassy field. Our student-athletes truly personify the heart of a Central Penn Knight. They display dedication, bravery, team spirit and chivalry, and I couldn’t be prouder of our athletes and their ability to juggle classwork, work in the “real world,” and personal obligations, while managing to work hard at practices and games. I am so proud to see them representing our college with such grit, loyalty and honor. If you think you might have what it takes to be a Central Penn Knight, please take a few minutes to complete the recruiting form at centralpennknights.com or email my office at athletics@centralpenn.edu. I look forward to seeing more and more cheering fans and happy faces at our games this season. Your willingness to “show up” means so much to these young players. I am reminded of soccer great Lionel Messi, who acknowledged that his extraordinary success is not his alone, saying, “If I hadn’t had support, I wouldn’t have been able to fulfill my dreams.” Please come cheer on our student-athletes. They truly represent the best of our community and of humanity. Winning with grace, accepting defeat with dignity, and never giving up, they show us what it means to be a successful Knight. We sincerely thank you for being in the stands with us this season.

As always, Go Knights!

Head Coach

Brian Osborne Coach Brian Osborne is entering his second year as Central Penn College’s Head Men’s Soccer Coach. He debuted as an assistant coach at Red Land High School in 2012, moved to head coach at his alma mater--Trinity High School—and then coached at Cedar Cliff High School in 2016. As a Trinity Shamrock, Coach Osborne was one of the soccer team’s all-time leading scorers. He also won a state championship in basketball in 2003, along with medals in track and field. He continued to excel in sports at Misercordia University and Temple University, where he earned a degree in Sports and Recreation Management in 2011. “I’m proud of the way last year’s group handled adversity,” he said. Starting a program from scratch, “these guys battled through a short roster, tough travel schedule, academics, limited training resources, and their own personal lives,” revealing their character. This season, he hopes to build upon that success, concentrate on communications skills, and ultimately, “make history with the first-ever conference championship and berth to the national tournament, all while enjoying the ride.”

Central Penn Soccer teams call Skyline Sports Complex on City Island home. Harrisburg is home to college soccer, thanks to a strategic partnership between Central Penn College and the City of Harrisburg. The agreement allows Central Penn men’s and women’s teams to play their home soccer matches at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. “We are delighted to give our student-athletes the opportunity to play at Skyline Sports Complex, a former home to professional soccer that Central Penn College will be proud to call home,” said Dr. Linda Fedrizzi-Williams, president of the college. The Harrisburg City Islanders, a professional soccer team, played at the venue for more than a decade from 2004–2015 and during the 2017–2018 season as Penn FC. The facility is in use 6

throughout the year by youth and adult teams, as well as soccer camps during the summer. “The City of Harrisburg is one of the most unique cities in the country because of City Island, and when all of it is being used, it’s at its best,” said Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams. “We are beyond excited to partner with Central Penn College and support their men’s and women’s soccer programs as the Skyline home field advantage leads to many wins.”

“Playing our home baseball games at FNB Field truly elevated the level of play and the spectator experience for our student-athletes and fans, and now it’s wonderful to see our soccer players and fans enjoying a similar experience on the beautiful soccer field at Skyline Sports Complex. We feel fortunate to be able to call City Island our home field,” said Central Penn Athletic Director Kasey Hicks.

Head Coach

Rudy Grubesky Rudy Grubesky is in his first year as the new head coach of the women’s soccer team. Assistant coaches Caitlin Brownley and Amanda Knaub join him in rebuilding the program after a four-year hiatus. Coach Grubesky brings more than 25 years of experience to Central Penn, including 10 years at the college level. He earned a prestigious “Coach of the Year” award from the United Soccer Coaches for the Girls’ East Region in 2016. Although the team roster is small, Coach Grubesky said he is excited about the upcoming season and the challenging conference and non-conference 16-match schedule. Grubesky said his goals include “molding a team, establishing a soccer culture, creating a safe playing environment, and striving for excellence,” all while creating a memorable college experience for the players. “Since I have a law enforcement and teaching background, I have always used sports to teach life lessons. I think it is important to emphasize teamwork, decision-making, discipline, respect for others, overcoming adversity, handling mistakes, striving for excellence, doing community service, and displaying sportsmanship. I believe that it is also important to develop leadership skills, so we have a ‘team of captains.’”
