As our local climate shifts and becomes drier, farmers face increasing challenges with water supply. One solution that’s gaining world-wide attention is dry farming, a set of practices that utilizes moisture stored in the soil from the rainy season to support summer crops rather than relying on irrigation.
DFI supports growers through collaboration, outreach and education. This includes helping farmers identify and source high quality crop varieties suitable for dry farmed or minimally irrigated conditions, and locations in Oregon suitable for dry farming.
The result: produce that’s more flavorful than conventionally irrigated crops, has a longer shelf life and is grown in a way that respects a changing environment.
