Transforming Homes: Laver Group’s Retrofit Impact

Hear from our CEO, Chris McLain Hear from our CEO, Chris McLain

As I reflect on eight months since joining the business in February, I am very proud to see how much the business has evolved and changed in such a short period of time Together, we continue to build a business that is sustainable and fit for the future, giving us a clearer direction as we look forward

We need now to focus on being the best, the most innovative and the most efficient company in our sector with our focus firmly on market-leading standards, compliance, and delivering an exceptional customer experience

Whilst we continue to be impacted by external factors such as the shift in ECO funding and rising material costs, internally are working hard to align our operating processes, refine our procedures, and prepare for the future.

It’s important to recognise the changes in our leadership team. In recent months we ’ ve said goodbye to several founders and welcomed new colleagues, and I’m proud of how well the business has adapted. We wish those who have moved on the very best and are already seeing the positive impact of our new team members.

Looking ahead, our Fit for the Future approach is gathering pace. Our new 360-degree camera technology will speed up the survey process, giving surveyors more time to focus on customers and products This innovation will also provide 3D floor plans, simplify requirements capture, and create a central image repository for all teams, with findings that are absolute and reliable

We are refining our processes and procedures to make sure we ’ re working smarter and more efficiently across the business Alongside this, we will invest in new systems and technology designed to make all our jobs easier, improve the customer experience and increase efficiency overall We are working business wide on KPIs & Management Information to help drive improvements

I’d like to highlight two initiatives that reflect the values at the heart of our business First, the charity football match in memory of our colleague Ryan Taylor, raising funds this year for Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS) This event is about more than fundraising, it’s also about unity, remembrance, and supporting Ryan’s family

Second, we are launching Unsung Heroes, a programme to recognise colleagues who quietly go above and beyond From problem-solvers to customer advocates, this is our way of celebrating the people whose dedication makes a real difference I encourage you all to get involved by nominating those who inspire you, watch this space for our first awards

As we move forward, it’s important that we always do the right thing and set the standard through our actions Each of us has a role to play in upholding high standards, supporting colleagues, and delivering for customers Acting with urgency is key, when something needs doing, let’s tackle it straight away. By responding quickly and positively, we strengthen our business and build trust in everything we do.

I am excited for what lies ahead, confident in our direction, and proud of the team spirit that drives everything we do at City Energy.

Best regards,

Get To Know: Smart Meters

What are Smart Meters?

Smart meters measure gas and electricity usage like traditional meters but automatically send readings to your supplier This removes the need for manual submissions or estimated bills.

They also provide real-time updates on your energy use and costs, usually through an In-Home Display (IHD) This helps you better understand and manage your energy consumption.

While a smart meter doesn’t directly save money, it gives you the tools to react quickly, showing how much energy (and cost) is wasted by things like appliances left on standby.

How do they work?

Smart meters send your usage to your supplier using wireless technology, similar to a mobile phone network. The electricity meter, gas meter and IHD all work together wirelessly via the communications hub located on or near to the electricity meter.

Second generation technology (SMETS 2) meters, that are currently being installed, also allow for switching between energy suppliers without losing the smart functionality of the system.

What

are the benefits of having a Smart Meter?

Accurate bills – Automatic readings mean no estimates or manual submissions. Monitor usage & spend – Track energy and costs in real time via your IHD to improve efficiency and save money.

Access to new tariffs – Benefit from off-peak tariffs and Smart Export Guarantee options if you generate solar power

Automatic top-ups – Prepayment customers can set credit alerts and top up automatically, avoiding last-minute trips

Supporting a greener grid – Smart meters help operators manage demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels

Partnering with Birmingham Council on Innovative Retrofit Solutions

On 27th August, Heather Watts joined senior Birmingham Council officials Richard Labram and Arnout Andrews on a site visit to an estate in Moxley, Wednesbury. The visit marked an exciting milestone, with some of the first local authority homes receiving Soltherm Modulus external wall insulation (EWI).

The Soltherm Modulus EWI System is an off-site manufactured modular façade solution designed to speed up whole-house retrofit. One of the major challenges facing external wall insulation is the shortage of skilled installers Modulus helps to bridge this gap by allowing local builders to be trained in a simplified, commoditised installation process, enabling quicker delivery without compromising quality.

Because the system is manufactured in a controlled environment, it guarantees consistency, safety, and quality while reducing risks associated with on-site retrofit It is fully BBA certified, achieves a fire rating of A2-s1, is suitable for all exposure zones, and has low vapour resistance.

Importantly, the system is more cost-effective than conventional EWI. The boards are delivered fully finished, with over 90% of brick slips and rendering completed off-site This significantly reduces installation time, minimises disruption, and allows work to continue year-round without delays caused by wet weather.

Recognised by Ofgem’s Technical Assessment Panel for ECO4 innovation, Modulus demonstrates both reduced installation costs and faster installation times

Looking ahead, City Energy Network is working with Birmingham Council to utilise Soltherm Modulus across the project The Birmingham Planning Department has already approved the system for use in conservation areas, as the brick slips can be manufactured to closely match the traditional appearance of local homes

On Saturday 28th June, our much-loved NVQ Assessor David Standing and his wife Alison celebrated 30 years of marriage by renewing their wedding vows. Surrounded by family and friends, the day was filled with joy, laughter, and love as they marked this incredible milestone together.

After the ceremony, David and Alison enjoyed a well-deserved honeymoon in Morocco, making new memories to add to their 35 years together. David’s warmth and positivity shine through in his work with CTG, so it was wonderful to see him celebrated in such style outside of the training environment. Everyone at City Energy Network sends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for many more happy years ahead.

Building Better Homes: Laver Group & Pobl

Group Lead the Way in Retrofit

What Was Done

The retrofit focused on fabric improvements, including internal wall insulation, upgraded loft insulation, new double glazing, and high-performance doors. A Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system was installed to improve air quality and reduce damp. Renewable energy also played a part, with a roof-mounted solar PV array and solar diverter maximising the home’s use of clean electricity

Project Overview

Laver Group has recently partnered with Pobl Group to deliver a whole-house retrofit in South Wales as part of the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) programme The project is a key step in supporting the Welsh Government’s decarbonisation goals while tackling fuel poverty and improving living standards

The property, a three-bedroom home built in the 1970s, had an EPC rating of D, high fuel bills, and issues with thermal comfort

Through a full package of upgrades, it has now been transformed into a modern, energy-efficient home.

Inside, residents benefited from a new kitchen and bathroom, a complete electrical rewiring to modern standards, and LED lighting throughout.

Looking Ahead

This project highlights the value of a whole-house approach to retrofit, combining efficiency, comfort, and safety. Delivered with the support of local subcontractors and technical consultants under PAS 2035 compliance, it provides a scalable model for future retrofits across Pobl’s housing stock, setting a clear benchmark for quality, sustainability, and resident wellbeing in Welsh social housing.

The Results

Bright Serve for Radyr Tennis Club

Radyr Tennis Club, a bustling community club in South Wales, has taken a meaningful step towards sustainability by installing two solar-battery systems designed to reduce grid reliance and manage peak energy use, especially from floodlights.

A Dual System Solution for Maximum Impact

To support the high power demand of floodlights, the team installed a hybrid solar setup featuring 21 Sharp NU‐JC430 panels paired with an 8kW 3‐phase inverter and two 10kW E.P. 11 batteries. A second standalone battery system with a Fox E.S.S. AC charger now backs up general clubhouse power, operating independently of the PV array.

Early Signs of Success

Although it’s early days, initial monitoring shows promising results: much of the club’s power demand, especially floodlight usage, is being met by solar and battery storage A full performance review is due in 12 months

With both systems now live, Radyr Tennis Club is positioned to enjoy reduced energy costs, a smaller carbon footprint, and enhanced energy control during peak times, like evening training under floodlights. They're optimistic about the longterm benefits, with a full performance review on the horizon.

Back in Action: CES Hits the Sand at Beach Rugby Wales 2025

Consumer Energy Solutions was proud to return to Beach Rugby Wales 2025, with our spirited squad, Bampi’s Boys, bringing energy, teamwork, and a whole lot of sand to one of the UK’s top grassroots rugby events.

But this year was about more than just sport. CES proudly supported Faith in Families, raising awareness and funds for their incredible work with disadvantaged children and families across South Wales

We were also joined by our brand ambassador, Welsh rugby legend Jonathan “Jiffy” Davies, who cheered us on and reminded us that heart wins over scorelines every time. We may not have won medals, but we walked away with something better, a stronger sense of purpose, community, and pride in giving back.

Huge thanks to the organisers, our teammates, and everyone who supported us. We’ll be back next year, stronger, sandier, and ready to power more positive change

What a day! The annual charity golf day teed off under new leadership this year, with Consumer Energy Solutions proudly taking the reins alongside Paul Maddocks Held at the beautiful Llanishen Golf Club, the event brought together 34 teams of four for a fantastic day on the green, all in support of two incredible causes: Velindre Cancer Centre and Prostate Cymru.

After a competitive (but friendly!) round of golf, guests enjoyed a well-earned dinner, a raffle packed with great prizes, and top-tier entertainment from a comedian host, all adding up to an unforgettable evening.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of everyone who attended and contributed, we ’ re thrilled to announce that the event raised an outstanding £16,000 for charity! A huge thank you to the players, sponsors, organisers, and supporters who made the day such a success. We’re already looking forward to next year ’ s event, bigger, better, and driving even more impact

Jiffy Celebrates 1 Year at CES

Over the past 12 months, Jiffy has brought his signature energy, professionalism, and passion to our brand, helping us connect with new audiences and strengthening our presence in the community.

As a former international rugby star, Jiffy’s name is synonymous with excellence, teamwork, and resilience, values that align perfectly with everything we stand for. Whether he’s speaking at events, appearing in our campaigns, or just chatting with customers and staff, Jiffy embodies the spirit of our brand with authenticity and enthusiasm

From day one, Jonathan has been more than just a familiar face. His insights, humour, and dedication have added real value, and his impact can be seen across everything we ’ ve done together this year. We’ve grown, reached new milestones, and had a lot of laughs along the way

We’re proud to have Jonathan as part of our extended CES family and look forward to continuing this exciting journey together
