Welcome
WATKINS CATTLE COMPANY 6TH ANNUAL FALL SALE
We are so thankful that you have taken the time to look at our program. As you can see, we are in the heart of the fescue belt, and take great pride in producing cattle that will thrive in this environment. Like many of you, we have been through multiple years of ongoing drought. This spring we also had to deal with an EF3 tornado that hit our home place on May 26, 2024. We are so blessed to have not lost any family members. Unfortunately, we have neighbors and friends who have had to recover while also losing loved ones. We sustained a tremendous amount of damage to every part of our place and are several months away from getting everything back to a functioning state. Due to the damage to our infrastructure, we were forced to move all our cattle away. We are extremely thankful for the offers of pasture, support, and help we received along the way. It is a very humbling experience to have so much damage that you are unable to perform the basic tasks of caring for your livestock.
Despite all the challenges we incurred this summer, our genetics performed above our expectations and have continued to be a testament to our selection criteria and stringent culling since we started in the seed stock business. The remaining damage has forced us to move our sale date and relocate off the ranch. We are very thankful for the support of one of our local cattle auctions who allowed us to use their facility this year. Lynden and Katie Judy have graciously offered their facility, The Cattlemen’s Livestock Auction in Harrison, Arkansas for us to use.
This year we are offering yearling bulls, a select group of age-advantage bulls, and registered spring-bred females. For the first time, we will be offering yearling registered heifers that are ready to breed this fall. We will continue offering open yearling commercial heifers. Tim Crunkleton Farms will have a select group of open commercial heifers out of his program as well. Tim has been a longtime friend of the family and has supported our program with bull purchases from day one. All heifers have been pelvic checked, tract scored, and vaccinated to be ready for fall breeding.
Watkins Cattle Company is a family-owned and operated cattle business. LaTeresa, as we affectionately call her “The Boss Lady” and our youngest daughter Laramie, who is in 11th grade at Valley Springs School, take care of day-to-day operations. Which includes calving and feeding all the animals, including the bulls in this sale. Our middle daughter, Mattie is enrolled in Graduate School at the University of Central Arkansas and helps pick up the slack on weekends and breaks. Our oldest daughter, Kaitlin is teaching first grade this year at Valley Springs School. Kaitlin and her husband Russell Goodman remain busy with their cow herd and raising our two grandchildren, Hazel and Hatch. They help when we have big days or when time allows. Without Russell’s efforts this year, we would not have been able to recover as quickly as we have. He brought in big equipment and worked endless hours around his busy schedule.
We are in an exciting time in the cattle industry. The cattle cycle is becoming more favorable for cow/calf producers again. You can look at market reports from any source today and see that cattle prices are drastically improving. This makes the fundamentals of having quality cattle that will perform, along with high fertility females, and producing healthy, heavy calves ready for market that will still drive profitability. This is a good time to evaluate your current bull battery and think about what opportunities for improvement are available to you.
We want to be your source for quality seedstock that will perform. We make every effort to bring top-quality genetics to our customers that will work in a grass-based program and have a lasting impact on their operations for years to come. We also work to bring the most progressive data collection tools to our disposal, including genomically enhanced EPDs and carcass ultrasound, as well as our on-ranch evaluations on docility, fertility, and phenotype.
We are very blessed to have you look at our program. We hope you enjoy the cattle we are offering this fall. Please reach out with any questions or additional information you would like to see. We look forward to seeing you on sale day. Safe travels and God bless you and your family.

Missouri Red Angus Association Fescue Belt Certified Program Announced
The Missouri Red Angus Associations Board of Directors recently approved the “Missouri Red Angus Association Fescue Belt Certified” program as an initiative designed to promote Missouri Red Angus members genetics.
Many of us who live in the “fescue belt” have experienced the problems associated with importing newly purchased cattle into our environment. What we’ve seen is a significant percentage of cattle that have not been raised on fescue struggle to perform after being imported onto this “grass we love to hate”. Some animals eventually overcome this issue, but many will not and will eventually be culled from the herd.
Fescue toxicity results from toxins called ergot alkaloids, which are produced by a fungus called endophyte that grows within the fescue plant. Cattle experiencing fescue toxicosis may exhibit rough hair coats, heat stress, suppressed appetite, poor growth rates, reduced reproductive performance, and in some cases lost tail switches or even hooves. The decreased animal performance seen during the “summer slump” of cool-season pastures is made even worse by these toxic effects of fescue.
Research on the subject of fescue management has been done for years. Several strategies can be used to mitigate the toxic effects of fescue, including removal or suppression of seedheads, overseedingof pastures with legumes or other forages, and good mineral supplementation programs. However, fescue remains a serious challenge. The USDA estimates fescue toxicosis costs the U.S. beef industry an estimated $600 million to $1 billion annually in lost revenue because of reduced reproductive and growth rates in cattle herds.
Missouri beef producers recognize the value of selecting cattle that are adapted to fescue. In 2016, University of Missouri Extension Geneticist, Dr. Jared Decker, was awarded a $3 million grant from the USDA to evaluate genetic differences in cattle among regions. Decker and his colleagues are utilizing DNA markers to study the interactions between cattle DNA and the environment. The study is focused on DNA, hair shedding, and tall fescue forage. When complete, the data will be used to design region-specific EPDs.
The entire state of Missouri is situated within the fescue belt. Since fescue was introduced into our region, Missourians have built their herds retaining only genetics that have proven to be “fescue tolerant.” When looking for Red Angus genetics, look for the MORAA FBC logo & cattle that have “Bred-in Fescue Tolerance.”

GUIDE TO EPDS & INDEXES
Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value)
Helix: Animal has undergone GGP-LD testing and has genomically enhanced EPDS
HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value). born (Index/High Value)
CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
YW Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
AGD Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value
MILK Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
ME Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)Value)
GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).born (Index/High Value)
HPG Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)
CEM Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
STAY Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling scoreamount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)
