The ComfortClass 500.
The future is yours.
What really drives us is a passion for creating something greater. A passion that isn’t entirely fulfilled by our wanting to design and build technologically excellent coaches. Our thought process begins at a much earlier stage. It puts people and their needs at the centre of every development we undertake: the passengers, the driver and of course the operator. Every Setra is specifically customised to your business plans and that is how we can ensure maximum over cost-effectiveness. That is ultimately the take-off point for what we do.
The ComfortClass is a versatile coach concept that beautifully meets the high demands for cost-effectiveness, safety and flexibility. What distinguishes the ComfortClass perhaps more than anything is its extremely wide variety of versions – which enable close to any business model to come to life. Its high level of comfort transforms every journey into a memorable experience for both your driver and your passengers.
Our commitment to building exceptional coaches is almost as old as the history of the coach itself. As the pioneer and progressive thinker Otto Kässbohrer invented the self-supporting coach body over 60 years ago, a far-reaching idea was born. One that would forever change the world of coaches and buses. Welcome on board!
Before the development of the ComfortClass 500 began, we spent a lot of time talking about the future. First of all with our customers. About the wishes and expectations of tomorrow’s passengers. About what moves and motivates the driver. And about changing economic, ecological and legal contexts.
Ultimately, we succeeded at bringing together seemingly mutually exclusive requirements in the ComfortClass. Cost-effectiveness, environmental consideration and performance, for instance. A coach concept has come to life which we believe best addresses tomorrow’s requirements.
Extremely versatile with its wide selection of models in different lengths, heights and door positions. Forward-looking in its exclusive, aerodynamic design. Exemplary in both safety and comfort. And amazing in the way it brings together state-of-the-art Euro VI technology, power and favourable fuel consumption.
Welcome to your future. Welcome to the ComfortClass 500.
Thanks to the ComfortClass 500’s wide range of models and equipment versions, you’ll find exactly the right coach to suit your travel concepts. For instance, the proven high-deckers are perfect if you’re travelling with discerning passengers on extended trips with a lot of luggage.
The range’s length spectrum extends from the compact and very agile S 511 HD, all the way through to the S 519 HD. The latter is the right choice if you are traveling with many passengers. As the longest coach in the ComfortClass, it is also ideal for long-distance line services. The S 511 HD is the ideal club touring coach for quality trips with a limited number of passengers, for VIP shuttle applications, or even for use on cycling tours with a trailer.
No matter how large your touring groups may be, the HD models from the ComfortClass offer exactly the right coach to meet any requirements – thanks to their wide spectrum of lengths.
Less height, more flexibility.
The ComfortClass MD models bring together the fascination of modern touring coaches with contemporary efficiency thinking. As middle-deckers, they open up a whole new coach segment. They are therefore ideal for tours with less luggage and high-level travel comfort – for long-distance line services as well as for occasional services.
The lower vehicle height of the MD models results in especially low air resistance, less curb weight, and therefore even more favourable consumption and a high payload.
Their interior standing height is outstanding and their customisation options are diverse. You can look forward to receiving exactly the level of equipment for your MD that suits your coach touring applications: from the basic standardequipment all the way through to fully customised high-level comfort. In short, the MD will adapt to your plans with absolute flexibility.
The ComfortClass 500’s inner greatness.
Outstanding spaciousness is what distinguishes travel in a ComfortClass 500. From the first moment onwards: the kneeling function, the wide steps and the elegant handrail make boarding the coach a pleasure.
The interior standing height is at a level that you don’t necessarily expect in this class. The innovative ceiling concept makes for an entirely new feeling of space: the passenger compartment opens upwards on the sides, enabling a sweeping view through the large panoramic windows for passengers in the middle aisle seats.
The current Setra seat generation, with its comfortable, ergonomically shaped backrests, ensures maximum seating comfort and ease of use. And, to open up a generous view to the outside for passengers in aisle seats, in many models the aisle seats can be configured using a staggered approach, six centimeters to the front of the window seats, on request.*

Ergonomic design at its most refined.
The ComfortClass 500 is consistently designed for the comfort and well-being of the driver. Even at first glance, the Comfort Coach Cockpit radiates a feeling of quality rarely experienced in a coach (image to the right). But most of all, an entirely new instrumentation, an enhanced overview and consistent operating logic throughout thee coach all combine with superb ergonomics.
For example, the driver’s seat, steering column and steering wheel offer multiple adjustment options. The exceptionally practical storage concept in the cockpit addresses drivers’ needs and wishes, and the suspended pedals significantly improve ergonomics. Invisible heating at the driver’s window contributes to very pleasant temperature control.
The standard-equipment cockpit found in the MD models stands out with its outstanding ergonomic design. In this case, the Comfort Coach Cockpit is available as special equipment (image below).
We know that the best and most cost-effective coach for you is the one that best suits your applications. This is why we offer you the ComfortClass 500 with an exceptional selection of equipment options.

State-of-the-art and ergonomic: the Coach Multimedia System (CMS, currently optional) with its large, vibrant colour display was specially optimised for use in coaches and is harmoniously integrated into the overall cockpit. Features such as easy destination input via rotary pushbutton in the navigation system considerably simplifies operation.
Always ready for use: thanks to the optional voltage transformer, several 220-volt outlets are available to passengers in the ComfortClass.
More locking comfort: the electronic vehicle key is also available with central locking and integrated remote control.
With a choice of two different door positions and in conjunction with the galley and WC options, you can adapt your ComfortClass to suit your specific requirements. Therefore, the middle door is the right choice if you want to carry as many passengers as possible with a reasonable amount of luggage.
If maximum luggage compartment capacity and an attractive integrated seat layout are in the foreground for you, the optional rear door is the right coach for you (only available for 2-axle vehicles). It enables a considerably higher luggage volume compared to the middle-door version, as well as comfortable access to the rear WC.
Barrier-free access: the electro-hydraulic wheelchair lift (option) is installed in the luggage compartment behind the front axle and it allows certification for up to three wheelchair positions.
For sports-minded travel: the ski box, painted in the same colour as the coach body and made of durable composite material, offers plenty of additional storage space and blends in perfectly with the design of the ComfortClass (optional).
Recharging à la carte: with the optional USB ports (10.5 W/2.1 A) your passengers can conveniently recharge small electrical devices such as mobile phones or cameras. You can select between different positions.
With the ComfortClass 500, the future is here today.
The ComfortClass has been at the forefront of safety developments since it was first introduced. And with the current generation, this applies even more so. Many safety features which will be legally required from a coach in the future, are already a given with the ComfortClass 500, which offers a safety concept that uniquely brings together both active and passive safety systems.
With is significantly greater rigidity, for instance, the ComfortClass 500 is ideally prepared to fulfil new requirements. This also applies to the further developed Front Collision Guard (FCG) and the new generation of optional Active Brake Assist 3 (ABA 3). The Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and Lane Assist (SPA) are standard equipment.
Moreover, the ComfortClass 500 offers a full series of safety systems, as standard equipment or options, to protect passengers and drivers – while maintaining the value of your coach.
For example, Attention Assist (AtAs, optional) recognises the driver’s fatigue and warns him actively. The innovative AquaBlade® windshield wiper system also delivers a big safety plus. Further safety features include the BiXenon headlamps (option), the standardequipment electronic ignition switch (optionally with integrated remote control), LED daytime lights (standard for the HD models, optional with the MD models) and, last but not least, the optimised standard-equipment Electronic Braking System (EBS 3).
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS, option) with the display in the cluster instrument makes checking tire pressure easier than ever. Additionally, it warns the driver if the tire temperature is too high. It helps you avoid tire damage – serving both safety and cost-effectiveness.
Stabiler Rohbau 113
Strength-optimised annular frames, new node elements, optimised pillar cross-sections and the use of high-strength steels ensure the ComfortClass 500’s high rollover strength.
optional BiXenon
up the edges of the
more clearly and more widely, and the high beam has a significantly greater reach. This increases perceptual safety and makes driving much safer especially at night.
The ComfortClass 500 brings together high-level cost-effectiveness, powerful performance and environmental compatibility as per Euro VI standards. For example, thanks to the new BlueEfficiency Power engines from Mercedes-Benz, which not only undercut stringent Euro VI limits, but also – with an 8.2 percent* lower fuel consumption – achieve best marks in terms of performance and weight.
Furthermore, our engineers and designers succeeded at creating a highly rigid yet lightweight support structure for the ComfortClass 500. They developed intelligent energy and consumption management. And they provided the ComfortClass with a consistently aerodynamic outer shell which, together with automatic level lowering at high speeds, reduces consumption even further. With the optional Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC),
Setra offers the driver for the first time ever a driver assistance system which, in addition to speed and brake control, intervenes in the automatic transmission control.**
Because the system knows the topography ahead thanks to GPS maps, it can proactively optimise switching times and cruise speed – especially in ascent and descents – and therefore act more fuel-efficiently. Predictive Powertrain Control makes the ComfortClass 500 even more cost-effective.
This and many other small mosaic pieces contribute to the ComfortClass 500’s consumption being significantly reduced compared to Euro V. And, thanks to a whole series of clever weight optimisation measures, the load and passenger capacity of the ComfortClass remains unchanged.
All of this provides you as operator with crystal clear financial benefits – along with even further optimised maintenance costs –and, one day, with a high resale value for your ComfortClass 500.

Aerodynamic design: with its drag coefficient of 0.33, the ComfortClass also sets a new benchmark in air resistance. More cost-effective on the road: The Eco Driver Feedback (EDF, optional) gives the driver individual feedback on his personal driving style. The goal is to exploit every potential in terms of fuel savings.
Consumption optimisation made easy: Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC, optional), in combination with the PowerShift transmission, ensures an efficient speed curve and an optimal gearshift sequence based on forward-lying topography.
A long-term investment, economical consumption, favourable maintenance costs: the ComfortClass doesn’t only stand out with its design, comfort and versatility. It will also impress you when you consider its cost-effectiveness throughout its entire lifecycle and beyond.
Investment costs and residual value.
With the ComfortClass, you are investing in a coach with the greatest possible value retention. To ensure optimal cost-effectiveness, we make sure to adapt the coach’s equipment to your needs, as well as financing, service and service contracts to your specific business application. If you wish, BusStore will even guarantee the residual value of your coach and buy it back at a later date. This enables the greatest possible planning security.
The highly efficient engines in our ComfortClass coaches ensure low fuel consumption with maximum performance. The Mercedes-Benz PowerShift 3 automatic transmission, perfectly adjusted to our engines, additionally optimise consumption. The outstanding aerodynamics of the ComfortClass, as well as OMNIplus DriverTraining programmes also contribute to favourable consumption values.
Long maintenance intervals and the high availability of your ComfortClass will keep your maintenance costs pleasantly low. Thanks to the full-coverage OMNI plus Service Network with coach-specific Service Points, you can count on remaining mobile at all times with your ComfortClass.
We are continuously optimising all these cost factors. Of course, there are costs which we cannot influence. In all cases, your ComfortClass not only performs brilliantly for passengers, but also for your bottom line. Your Setra partner will be happy to go through the figures with you in detail.
There is a lot more that goes into what your ComfortClass costs than its purchase price. At Setra, we always make it a point to look at the big picture when we develop a coach or bus. We optimise all TCO factors in view of achieving the best possible cost-effectiveness. These factors include investment costs, operational costs, maintenance and repair costs , as well as the residual value when the vehicle is sold.
The good news is that yes, we can influence them and we do – to the greatest possible extent. For example, by continuing to develop and evolve our drive components, by reducing the need for maintenance, by offering customised services – and of course, through the well-known outstanding quality and durability of our coaches and buses. Adaptive Cruise Control (ART). The Adaptive Cruise Control feature relieves the driver by maintaining a constant distance – defined by the driver – from the vehicle ahead, based on continuous measurements. This not only increases safety on country roads and highways, but also convenience.
A radar system, which guarantees outstanding functionality even under poor weather conditions and in the dark, monitors a distance of up to 200 meters in front of the vehicle and to the full width of the road. Should a variably defined security distance to the vehicle driving ahead be undercut, ART slows down the coach so that the safety zone is maintained. Many rear-impact collisions can therefore be avoided.
Unlike the emergency assistant Active Brake Assist 3 (ABA 3), ART initiates a smooth braking with maximum 20 percent of its possible power.
Brake Assist (ABA 3) and Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS)
If the defined distance to a vehicle ahead or a stationary obstacle falls below that determined by the ART feature, the emergency braking assistant ABA 3 or AEBS will intervene. To this end, a radar-controlled system continuously scans the lane ahead of the vehicle at a distance of up to 200 metres.
If the distance lowers dangerously, the systems warn the driver in a 1st step using optical and acoustic signals. If he doesn’t react, the braking system mechanically prepares the braking system for an immediate braking in a 2nd step. If the driver still doesn’t react, the systems independently initiate full braking in a 3rd step.
With AEBS, today ’s regulatory requirements on emergency braking assistance systems are exceeded by far. In fact, the system now complies with the testing regulations which will apply beginning in 2018. ABA 3 even goes a step further, in that it intervenes even earlier than AEBS in the case of stationary obstacles.
Lane Assist (SPA).
Driver fatigue ranks among the most frequent causes of accidents. The Lane Assist feature, at the heart of which is a camera positioned behind the front windscreen, continuously measures the lateral distance to side road markings. If the driver moves out of the lane, the system warns him through a vibration in the seat.
To avoid false alarms, the Lane Assist is only activated at speeds of at 70 km/h. This prevents problems along construction sites, where coaches hardly drive at speeds greater than 70 km/h. If the driver consciously changes lanes and puts the blinker on, the Lane Assist recognises this and does not give a warning.
Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL).
The Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL) safety feature prevents the vehicle from accelerating beyond a predetermined speed on inclines, stabilising the speed. It makes use of the Retarder which prevents overheating of the standard brake, and which is in this case combined with a speed control. For the Continuous Braking Limiter, the driver can define a fixed speed, which should not be exceeded on inclines. Moreover the system prevents the allowed maximum speed of 100 km/h to be exceeded, through warnings in the central display and through braking interventions. Driving on inclines is therefore not only made safer but considerably more comfortable.
Level lowering and kneeling.
The ComfortClass 500 is equipped with an electronic level control system. Its control mechanism sources data from 4-way sensors which are positioned outwards on the rear axle. The electronic level control offers clear benefits to operators as well as passengers. On the one hand, at high speeds, the level of the coach is automatically lowered, which in interaction with the very aerodynamic design of the ComfortClass 500, contributes to optimised fuel consumption. On the other hand, for the first time with a coach, “kneeling” is used as standard equipment. This allows the level of the non-moving coach to be lowered on one side, to facilitate passenger entry into the coach.
Front Collision Guard (FCG).
In the case of a frontal collision, the Front Collision Guard (FCG) offers increased safety in the front part of the vehicle and reliable underride protection through a cross profile. Crash elements, with an absorber structure which transforms impact energy into distortion energy, are positioned behind the FCG’s cross profile. This considerably reduces the outcome of the impact.
Since the driver’s work space incl. steering, pedals and seat is mounted on a massive frame component, it can be pushed backwards to maintain a protective space for the driver in the case of severe frontal impact. So, the interplay of Active Brake Assist 3 and FCG can achieve unparalleled levels of safety for the driver and attendant, and ultimately for passengers as well.
The FCG fulfils the requirements of the underride guard according to ECE-R 93, as well as future legislation for pendulum impact in coaches.
The AquaBlade ® windshield washer system. With a highly innovative profile, the AquaBlade ® flat-blade wipers ensure that the cleaning water is distributed very evenly on the windscreen. What is unusual about the system is that the cleaning water exits the wiper blade and is immediately directly to the area requiring cleaning. This enhances comfort, saves cleaning water, enables improved cleaning and optimised visibility – and ultimately a significant plus in safety. As well, the AquaBlade ® flatblade wipers feature exceptional aerodynamic qualities, which also result in reduced noise.
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP ®).
The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP ®) significantly reduces the risk of skidding, by counteracting the vehicle’s swerving through targeted braking of individual wheels. High-performance electronics monitor the signals of ESP ® sensors and continuously check whether the driver’s steering intention and the actual motion of the vehicle correspond. If the values differ, the system instantly reduces the engine power to re-establish the vehicle’s balance and stability. If this is not sufficient, the system additionally brakes individual wheels.
Two further active safety systems are included in the ESP ® system: the Anti-Block system (ABS) and the Integrated Traction Control (ASR).
The more precisely the ComfortClass 500 is customised to your specific requirements and areas of application, the more efficiently it will work for you on the road. This is why you can not only select among several equipment options, but also among eight length and height versions. Each one delivers an outstanding priceperformance ratio, fair investment costs per seat, amazing availability and highlevel investment security.
