MISSION
The mission of John Cabot University is to provide an educational experience firmly rooted in the American tradition of liberal arts and solidly international in orientation. The academic programs are designed to use to the fullest extent the special resources of a multicultural faculty, an international student body, and the extraordinarily rich culture and history of Rome and the surrounding region.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is my privilege to present the 2025 Annual Report, a reflection of a year marked by growth, innovation, and community achievement. This has been a defining period in the life of John Cabot University, one in which our mission has continued to flourish, and our impact has reached new heights.
This year we proudly launched the Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design, a program that blends the solid foundation of the liberal arts with the creative and technical skills required by today’s art and design fields. The program found its home in the Honorable Frank J. Guarini Art Center, located in our new 16,000-square-foot campus adjacent to the Frohring Campus. This remarkable facility, designed by AeV Architetti, combines the historic beauty of Trastevere with state-of-the-art resources, from specialized art studios and a dedicated film screening room to a new Aula Magna, rooftop terrace, and vibrant community spaces. It is a hub for creativity, collaboration, and academic excellence.
Our community has also celebrated record-breaking enrollment, welcoming students from all 50 U.S. states and 57 countries in Fall 2024. With a total enrollment of over 1,800 students, we stand as one of the largest American universities in Europe. The Class of 2025, our largest graduating class in history, brought together 248 students from over 40 countries in a truly global celebration overlooking the Eternal City.
In the graduate sphere, the launch of the Master of Arts in International Affairs in Fall 2024 expanded our advanced offerings alongside the Master of Arts in Art History. Our intellectual reach also deepened through the establishment of the Guarini Senior Fellowship on Transatlantic Relations, in collaboration with Ambassador Armando Varricchio, furthering our engagement in academic and policy dialogue on issues of global importance.
These achievements are a testament to the dedication and vision that define John Cabot University. They embody our founding mission: to bring students from across the world to Rome, where they learn in an environment of open inquiry, cultural exchange, and academic rigor.
This year carries a special significance for me personally. After twenty years as President, I will be concluding my tenure at the end of the 2025-2026 academic year. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this extraordinary institution and to witness its transformation into one of the most respected American universities abroad. Over these two decades, we have expanded our campuses, diversified our academic programs, strengthened our global community, and nurtured generations of graduates who carry the spirit of JCU into the world.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends for your steadfast commitment and support. Your belief in our mission has made possible this remarkable journey of growth and discovery. Together, we have built a stronger, more vibrant, and more impactful university, and I am confident that the next chapter in JCU’s history will be even more inspiring.
Franco Pavoncello, Ph.D. President John Cabot University

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE JCU BOARD OF TRUSTEES
As Chairman of the John Cabot University Board of Trustees, I am proud to reflect on another exceptional year for our university. The dedication of our trustees, administration, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends remains the cornerstone of JCU’s continued success.
In 2025, the New York Gala was dedicated to the JCU Scholarship Program, underscoring the vital role scholarships play in providing access and opportunity to talented students. Honoring Nicola Bulgari, a distinguished philanthropist and arts patron, the event highlighted the generosity that sustains these life-changing scholarships and strengthens our community.
This year also saw the launch of the Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design and the introduction of the Master of Arts in International Affairs, enriching our academic portfolio. Our growing and diverse student community continues to enhance JCU’s standing as a leading American university in Europe, with the largest graduating class in our history celebrated for their global engagement and academic excellence.
This moment is especially meaningful as we honor President Franco Pavoncello and celebrate two decades of extraordinary leadership. Over the past twenty years, he has guided John Cabot University with vision, passion, and determination, transforming JCU into a vibrant, internationally recognized institution.
Looking back on this remarkable journey, we celebrate not only President Pavoncello’s leadership but also the collective achievements of our community. Together, we have built a legacy of excellence and opportunity that will inspire generations to come. With gratitude and pride, we mark this milestone in JCU’s history and celebrate all that has been accomplished.

ACADEMICS AND PROGRAMS
The 2024–2025 academic year has been defined by the University’s sustained expansion in social and behavioral sciences and STEM-related disciplines. Psychology has grown into one of JCU’s most dynamic fields, and the rising student demand has been met with strategic faculty recruitment. In parallel, investment in computer science, summer engineering, and related areas reflects the University’s commitment to preparing students for a world increasingly reliant on new technologies.
Artificial Intelligence is now firmly embedded in the educational life of the University. From the addition of AI-centered courses to the work of the Frohring Library, the University continues to engage with the intersection of artificial intelligence and higher education in a variety of ways. In our Frohring Library, the Reference and Instruction Librarians have not only continued to include critical AI literacy in their sessions with students but, in September 2024, they launched a series of library guides to serve as the University’s main source of AI-related news and guidance. AIrelated events were also organized during the year as a collaboration between the Frohring Library and the Elisabetta Morani Center for Teaching and Learning.
This approach ensures that AI literacy is accessible to students from every major, allowing them to explore applications in their own disciplines while gaining transferable skills that are in high demand globally. The initiative underscores JCU’s vision of integrating technology with the liberal arts, cultivating graduates who can navigate and shape the digital future.

NEW PROGRAMS

Small class sizes foster close collaboration with internationally renowned faculty and practitioners, ensuring a personalized academic experience that blends rigorous theory with real-world application.
The program also offers an exceptional dual-degree pathway in partnership with L’Orientale University in Naples, enabling students to earn both the JCU MA and an Italian Laurea Magistrale in Relations and Institutions of Asia and Africa in just two years. Graduates are prepared for diverse career paths, from roles in the United Nations, World Bank, and international NGOs to positions in government, global finance, consulting, and civil society organizations. By situating the program in Rome, home to numerous international agencies, the MA in International Affairs places students at the heart of global decision-making, offering both academic excellence and unparalleled professional networking opportunities.

Reflecting the University’s liberal arts mission, the BA in Art and Design will encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and situate creative practice within global contexts. Opportunities for exhibitions, internships, and partnerships with local institutions will prepare graduates for careers in the creative industries, cultural heritage management, and beyond.
New Minors in Computer Science and Sociology
Two new minors were launched in Fall 2024, expanding the breadth of JCU’s academic offering and granting students greater flexibility in shaping their education.
The Computer Science minor provides pathways in data analysis, web development, and computational methods, enabling students from any discipline to enhance their technical and problem-solving capabilities.
The Sociology minor deepens students’ understanding of social structures, cultural change, and contemporary challenges, covering themes such as inequality, migration, and urban life. Both programs reflect JCU’s emphasis on equipping students with analytical skills and interdisciplinary perspectives to address complex real-world issues.
BS in Computer Science and Information

This new major is designed to not only address the curriculum desires of our degree-seeking students but also serve to provide the necessary curriculum to welcome our visiting students to spend time in our JCU and in the beautiful city of Rome.

CENTER FOR GRADUATE STUDIES
The Center for Graduate Studies, which hosts John Cabot’s Master’s programs, was inaugurated in September 2024. It was built in 1495 by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, and is located within the Accademia dei Lincei, adjacent to the Guarini Campus.
In addition to two fully-equipped classrooms, the facility also provides faculty rooms, meeting areas and a student lounge. Classes, book presentations, speaker events and social get-togethers make this a vibrant, dedicated hub for our graduate community.

SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT
• The Triggering Change competition reached its third consecutive year, attracting 170 students from 57 disciplines, from universities in Italy, the UK and South Africa. The average improvement in SDG awareness after the project was 20%.
• A student delegation attended the COP 29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.
• The Kushlan Lecture in Environmental Conservation was given by Professor Diana Urge-Vorsatz, Vice Chair of the IPCC, on climate change and the energy transition, in November 2024.

Class of 2025
International Affairs Major, Legal Studies Minor
From: United States of America
My time at John Cabot was enriching, fulfilling, and enjoyable inside the classroom and out. I pursued a Bachelors in International Relations with a Minor in Legal Studies, and while I could not have known before starting, my time engaging in student life and clubs supplemented my academic learning in a meaningful and practical way. Beginning with the Interfaith Alliance, I helped to bring the community together to learn about each other and explore the religious communities within the Eternal City. As Vice President and President of the International Relations Society, we brought people to share their perspectives on developments in the world and learn from professionals and experts. Finally, as Vice President of Student Government, I worked with University Administration, Faculty, Staff to advocate for and implement meaningful changes within the University on behalf of the Student Body. I know that I will carry and use the support, skills, and experiences I gained while at JCU in every step of my future path.

Skyla Bigale Priya Katenga

From: Malawi
I am no stranger when it comes to moving around and living abroad. However, moving from Malawi to Italy was not just a change in geography, but it was me taking a step into independence and was a shift in culture, pace, and personal growth. At John Cabot University, I found a space where I could weave the bold patterns of my Malawian roots with my new Italian home. I am grateful that I not only got to experience this celebration of diverse cultures, but played a role in ensuring other students felt it too. With my roles as Social Media Manager and President of the Black and African Student Association, I was able to extend this gift of celebration with the student body. It was an honor to witness how the integration of various cultures played a role in anchoring other international students who are living away from home. For that, I am grateful for John Cabot University and for the University transforming me into a global citizen who is empowered to speak louder, laugh freer, and use cultural differences to stand out rather than retreat!

From: Montenegro and Russia
Studying at JCU has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have made. Over the past three years, I have been inspired by dedicated professors, supported by kind staff, and surrounded by friends who made Rome feel like home. I have grown not only through academics, but also through opportunities like serving as a Resident Assistant, an academic representative in Student Government, and Secretary of the International Relations Society. Through JCU, I was able to volunteer at international events, attend summer school programs, and co-manage a major economics conference. With the support of the university, I have now been accepted to University College London for graduate studies, which is something I could not have done without this community. I will always carry deep gratitude and affection for JCU, which has shaped me in ways I will forever cherish.

ATHLETICS
The 2024–2025 academic year was a dynamic and enriching period for JCU Athletics, marked by a blend of competition, camaraderie, and community engagement. The year commenced with a memorable varsity retreat in Sapri, where student-athletes engaged in intensive training sessions, team-building activities, and cultural exchanges, all facilitated by the warm hospitality of the local community.
Throughout the semesters, the Outdoor Education Program offered students opportunities to explore Italy’s natural beauty through various trips, including hiking adventures in Narni and Marmore Waterfalls, a ski weekend in Roccaraso, and sailing excursions in Anzio. These experiences not only promoted physical wellbeing but also fostered a deeper appreciation for Italian culture and landscapes.
On campus, the intramural sports program thrived, providing a platform for students to participate in friendly competitions such as pickleball, beach volleyball, and dodgeball. These activities encouraged inclusivity and offered a fun way to stay active and connected. Demonstrating a commitment to social responsibility, JCU Athletics organized various charity events and fundraising initiatives, supporting non-profit
organizations and reinforcing the university’s dedication to community service.
This year also featured significant competitive achievements, with varsity teams participating in the Universities of Rome Championship and representing JCU at the International Sports Festival in Athens. JCU also took part in the WIUC International Tournament held in Rome, which saw JCU’s cheerleading team competing in an official event for the first time.
A historic milestone was reached as the men’s soccer team secured its first-ever Europa League title— an unprecedented victory in JCU history. The men’s basketball team mirrored this success by also winning the Europa League, marking a standout season for our varsity teams.
Additionally, the Athletics program expanded with the creation of a mixed padel team and the launch of the women’s basketball team, further demonstrating JCU’s commitment to inclusivity and the growth of athletic opportunities for all students.
This year was a harmonious blend of athletic excellence, cultural exploration, and community involvement, embodying the true spirit of the Gladiators.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
The 2024-2025 academic year saw a total of 19 student clubs run by 110 student leaders who organized 455 events, initiatives, and meetings. The academic year commenced with an in-person team-building training where all club leaders participated to test their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Over the course of the year, Clubs and Organizations focused on collaborations both within and outside of the JCU community, creating meaningful opportunities for learning from and networking with associations such as the World Food Forum, FAO, the Bulgari Foundation, INTERSOS, Cinema Troisi, and Internazionale Magazine, among others. They also collaborated with other universities such as the American University of Rome, Temple University Rome, and LUISS University.
Major events included the brand-new Gladiators Go Green: Sustainability Fair, a revamping of the traditional Very International People event, the annual Spring Ball, and the semesterly Student Life Fair, all overseen by the Student Engagement Office but only made possible thanks to the volunteering of club leaders. Many clubs upheld their missions by focusing their efforts on initiatives promoting civic duty, activism,
and sustainability through workshops, panel discussions with guest speakers, company visits, fundraisers, and community events. Notably, among other significantly impactful projects, the Black and African Student Association organized a vibrant program for Black History Month, the Queer Alliance hosted a panel in honor of Trans Day of Visibility, Grassroots and STAND partnered to mobilize the JCU community in donating hundreds of clothing items to the needy.
Club leaders represented JCU at various conferences this year, including speaking at a Student Leadership Bootcamp hosted by the European University and College Association in Seville, Spain, and presenting at the Student Leader Global Summit hosted by the International Association of Student Affairs and Services in Cork, Ireland; JCU delegations of student journalists also traveled to the Internazionale Festival in Ferrara and the International Journalism Festival in Perugia.
At the Student Life Celebration on April 30, the Student Engagement Office awarded Leadership Honor Cords to 25 graduating senior students who had served as club leaders for at least four semesters, to recognize their outstanding contributions to campus life.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
In 2024–2025, John Cabot University’s Community Service Office continued to serve as a dynamic hub for civic engagement, connecting students with local organizations to foster social responsibility and experiential learning. These initiatives reflect JCU’s enduring commitment to preparing globally minded citizens through hands-on community involvement.
Students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds contributed approximately 2,127 hours of service throughout the year. Activities included English conversation sessions at Casa Internazionale delle Donne, breakfast service and meal distribution with TuttoBlue Arte e Sociale and Vo.Re.Co., as well as weekly environmental cleanups in Trastevere, where the students’ efforts led to the removal of over 190 kilograms of waste. Students also volunteered at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center, organizing recreational activities, and took part in the Italy Reads program, which promotes literacy and intercultural exchange.
A standout initiative was the project “Bevo? Anche No!”, developed in collaboration with the local volunteer association Trastevere Attiva. Two JCU students worked with psychologists and 8th-grade students from Istituto Comprensivo Statale Regina Margherita to produce educational videos focused on healthy social behaviors
and how to successfully address peer pressure related to alcohol consumption. Central to these efforts were the Site Leaders, students who played a key role in coordinating projects, mentoring peers, and ensuring meaningful volunteer experiences. Student engagement was further fostered through collaborative efforts with student clubs, including STAND, dedicated to humanitarian aid issues, and Grassroots, committed to environmental advocacy.
To complement fieldwork, the program hosted a series of lectures addressing critical global issues, from environmental sustainability to humanitarian crises, delivered by faculty and guest speakers, including representatives from NGOs such as INTERSOS and WWF.
The Community Service Certificate for completing 15 hours of volunteering during the semester was conferred to 18 students in Fall 2024 and 24 students in Spring 2025. At the Student Life Celebration, 10 graduating seniors received the Service Honor cord for volunteering for more than 65 hours throughout their time at JCU.
The Community Service Office extends heartfelt thanks to all students who took part in this year’s initiatives. Their dedication and leadership not only advanced JCU’s mission but also made a tangible difference in the lives of others, both locally and beyond.
CULTURAL PROGRAMS
Through the Cultural Programs, the 2024–2025 academic year once again gifted our students with meaningful experiences of exploration, learning, and community. From the cultural tours and day trips during Orientation to a variety of educational activities — including wine tastings, cooking classes, guided meditations, and immersive weekend excursions — each initiative has offered unique opportunities to connect more deeply with Italy, its culture, and oneself.
Iconic destinations like Campania and Umbria continued to inspire, while new and refreshing itineraries to Emilia-Romagna, the Gargano Peninsula, and a long weekend in Matera expanded our students’ horizons. Each place provided a new lens through which to see the world and their place within it — thanks to hands-on workshops, concerts, and experiential tours, students discovered the simple, yet powerful, beauty of a life lived in connection with others, with the arts, and with the rhythm of nature.
A particularly meaningful highlight of the year was the humanitarian trip to Greece, organized in collaboration with STAND Club and the Assistant Dean of Academics. This initiative supported the efforts of a local humanitarian organization, allowing students to engage
directly with community-based projects and experience the transformative power of service learning. The trip offered a unique blend of depth, cross-cultural dialogue, and personal growth — embodying the university’s mission to foster global citizenship and compassionate leadership.
Beyond discovering Italy’s cultural richness, students built lasting friendships and enjoyed moments of lighthearted exchange, growth, and nourishment for the soul — all across the country. As always, the most meaningful reflections come from the students themselves. Here is just one of many heartfelt testimonials that capture the essence of these experiences: “Adventure, connection, wonder: these trips opened my eyes to the beauty of Italy in ways I never imagined. Every destination felt like stepping into a storybook, filled with history, culture, and unforgettable moments shared with incredible people. If you join one of these trips, you’ll experience the same magic — and create memories that will stay with you forever. This semester abroad wasn’t just wonderful — it was like a dream, a dream I never wanted to wake up from. And now I have a new perspective: to truly live in the moment.”

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, the Office of Health and Wellbeing continued its commitment to supporting students’ physical and mental health through a broad range of services, wellness initiatives, and collaborative efforts across departments to address student needs both proactively and responsively.
A key highlight this year was the launch of the Wellness Ambassadors Program in Spring 2025. This pilot program empowered five students to lead and promote health and wellbeing activities on campus significantly increasing student engagement and awareness of campus resources. As part of their training, the five Wellness Ambassadors became Certified Peer Educators with NASPA (National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education).
The Wellness Ambassadors organized and facilitated a variety of successful events, including
Celebrate Every Mind (part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week), Digital Wellness Roulette, and Mindful Meals (focused on eating healthy and ethically on a budget), among others.
In addition to event coordination, Wellness Ambassadors supported the Office in promoting important initiatives such as the Period Product Workshop in collaboration with the Women’s Leadership Initiative, and helped engage the campus community during Black History Month with the Black and African Student Association, and Trans Day of Visibility with the Queer Alliance.
Overall, the Wellness Ambassadors Program marked an important step forward in enhancing the culture of health and wellbeing across campus. The Office looks forward to building on this success in the coming year.
PERFORMING ARTS
The Performing Arts Program has continued to expand since its re-establishment in 2022. The theatre company, always a mix of of degree-seeking and visiting students, culminated the Fall 2024 semester with a festive play by Ken Ludwig titled “The Game’s Afoot, or Holmes for the Holidays.” The show was performed at the external venue Teatro Agorà for three nights and received enthusiastic audience feedback. Company members also provided musical entertainment at JCU’s annual Thanksgiving dinner.
In the Spring 2025 semester, the theatre company practiced for over 150 hours in various locations to perform the popular musical Heathers. The students’ deep commitment resulted in three live performances of professional caliber, proving once again how passionate the JCU community is about theatre and the arts.
In collaboration with Athletics, the program
introduced modern dance classes, held twice a week at the JCU Fitness Center in Gianicolo Residence. The dance classes are set to continue and expand.
The Performing Arts Program is committed to welcoming all students and creating a safe and inclusive environment where they can engage with themselves and each other through artistic expression. Under the supervision of professional artists, the students learn to hone their skills in acting, singing, instrument-playing, choreographing, dancing, stage managing, creating scenery, and assisting with tech, among others. Working together toward a final goal fosters teamwork and helps students gain plenty of soft skills.
The new academic year will bring forth many opportunities for the students in the Performing Arts Company to prove themselves.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE
The Residential Life team comprising Residence Directors (RDs), Resident Assistants (RAs), the Residential Life Coordinator and RA Manager operated under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Residential Life. Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, the team supported JCU’s mission by fostering an inclusive, supportive, and engaging living-learning environment.
In Fall 2024, the team launched the Residential Life Education Program, focusing on community building, academic support, wellness, cultural awareness, and leadership. The program started with the Residential Life Kick-off event during orientation week attended by nearly 100 students, followed by themed activities such as a Silent Disco, Dia De Los Muertos celebration, and a meditation session at the Orto Botanico during midterms.
The program expanded in Spring 2025, offering 16 events, including RD-led main events and RA-led community activities. Highlights included a Valentine’s Day event on healthy relationships, a campus resource
workshop, and large-scale collaborations with the Student Engagement Office like the Very International People cultural showcase and Gladiators Go Green Sustainability Fair. RAs also organized smaller events like Study Power Hour, Mask Making Party, and Gratitude Gatherings.
While promoting student engagement, the Residential Life team also supported students in navigating the challenges and advantages that come with making a new home away from home with new people and in a new environment like Rome. In Fall 2024, a team of 18 RAs supported 559 students, and in Spring 2025, a team of 18 RAs supported 557 students. The team was guided by five RDs - three in residence halls and two covering Neighborhood Apartments - serving a total of 930 students in Fall and 763 in Spring.
At the end of Spring, the team recognized RA leadership with 4 Student Leadership cords, 10 certificates, and 1 Outstanding Student Leadership Award for significant contributions to campus life.

OUR INSTITUTES

INSTITUTE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The JCU Institute for Entrepreneurship (IFE) continues to provide a high-impact entrepreneurial education grounded in social responsibility and international collaboration. Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, IFE remained a dynamic space for students, faculty, and professionals to explore how entrepreneurship can drive innovation and positive change across disciplines.
Elevator Pitch Competition and Experiential Initiatives
Among the most popular initiatives this year was the Elevator Pitch Competition, held in both Fall and Spring. Over 50 students presented their ideas with clarity and creativity, while the online voting system generated more than 10,000 impressions, strengthening community engagement.
IFE also actively supported two major experiential programs: Italy Starts and Italy Pitches. With 94 and 135 participants respectively, these initiatives offered students valuable opportunities to work in international teams and develop early-stage projects with real-world impact.

Guest Speaker Series and Horizon Lectures
IFE continued to bring entrepreneurial experience into the classroom through its Guest Speaker Series, welcoming 20 speakers in Fall 2024 and 11 in Spring 2025. These included startup founders, investors, and innovation leaders.
Through the Horizon Lecture Series, in collaboration with the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, IFE organized 5 events in Fall and 4 in Spring, addressing topics such as digital transformation, sustainability, and interdisciplinary innovation.
The ongoing collaboration with Jonathan Aberman, Visiting Executive Entrepreneur and Strategic Advisor to the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, further enriched IFE’s programming. During his time in residence, Aberman led workshops and clinics for the JCU community and contributed to the development of the upcoming “Entrepreneurship Camp.” He continues to support the expansion of entrepreneurial networks for both JCU students and the broader Italian innovation ecosystem in close partnership with the Institute for Entrepreneurship.
Multidisciplinary Activities
This year’s programming featured impactful events at the intersection of entrepreneurship, art, and sustainability. Art & Creativity on the Frontline, co-hosted with the Department of Communication and Media Studies, featured artist and writer Molly Crabapple, who spoke about documenting conflict and the creative role of art in times of crisis.
Another key event, From Waste to Worth: Love What You Have with Menabòh, offered students an immersive experience in sustainable fashion and circular design, with live demonstrations by professional upcycling designers.
Partnerships And Initiatives
A major highlight was the official launch of Enactus at JCU, through the event Entrepreneurship as a Driver for Social Value Creation. As part of this global nonprofit network, students can now engage in projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
IFE also sponsored 14 students to attend WomenX Impact, an international event promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation.
Additionally, IFE launched Pioneering Entrepreneurship With No-Code App Solutions, a workshop designed to teach students how to use no-code tools and AI to tackle sustainability challenges through practical digital solutions.
Another important development was the renewal of the partnership between John Cabot University and Hult International Business School. As part of this collaboration, Hult offered two full scholarships for JCU students to attend its prestigious Boston Summer Bootcamp, along with partial tuition support for others interested in participating. This initiative reinforces both institutions’ commitment to global education and experiential learning, giving JCU students direct access to Hult’s world-class business programs and international network.
GUARINI INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS
The Guarini Institute for Public Affairs, established through the generosity of the Honorable Frank J. Guarini, Trustee of John Cabot University, marked a significant renewal this past academic year with the creation of a newly structured Advisory Council composed of distinguished scholars, professionals, and practitioners from around the world. The primary goal of this reorganization was to further strengthen the Institute’s role in fostering dialogue on global affairs and to provide additional academic and professional support to the M.A. in International Affairs, which launched in September 2024. The Institute continues under the leadership of Director, Professor Federigo Argentieri, Ph.D., and Associate Director, Professor Enrico Fardella, whose combined expertise in European and Asian politics ensures both continuity and expansion of the Institute’s international outlook. Over the course of the year, the Guarini Institute consolidated partnerships with leading institutions, organized a diverse range of events, and maintained strong student involvement through the International Relations Society and the Student Government.
The Guarini Institute for Public Affairs’ newly assembled Advisory Council brings together an impressive group of international scholars, practitioners, journalists, and leaders whose expertise spans politics, economics, international relations, environment, climate change, media, and culture. Members include former UN and WTO officials, political scientists, sociologists, economists, historians, and journalists, as well as specialists in European, American, and Asian affairs. Their diverse professional backgrounds range from academia and diplomacy to policymaking, business, and media, with many having published influential books and research in their fields. Supported by student organizations like the International Relations Society and Student Government, the council reflects John Cabot University’s commitment to fostering global dialogue, interdisciplinary exchange, and critical engagement with pressing international challenges.
INSTITUTE OF FUTURE AND INNOVATION STUDIES
Founded in 2019, the Institute of Future and Innovation Studies promotes international collaboration, transdisciplinary research, and dialogue on emerging and future innovations of high societal relevance and impact in a variety of domains: scientific, technological, economic, environmental, cultural, and social. Building on JCU’s distinct humanistic and scientific traditions, in 2023–2024 the Institute continued its trajectory of highlevel achievement and growing institutional recognition. It expanded its participation in intergovernmental and academic networks, and maintained strong connections with public diplomacy initiatives, international organizations, and global research communities. The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to a crossdepartmental approach, inclusive student engagement, and active collaboration with faculty and staff across the university.

The past year has been particularly significant, with the Institute contributing to several landmark international events, including the UN Summit of the Future in New York, and deepening its leadership in AI, digital governance, and the strategic foresight community.
The Institute organized multiple high-level roundtables and expert forums on topics including cybersecurity, AI and education, democratic resilience, transatlantic cooperation, diplomacy, and the future of space governance. It also began foundational work for the creation of a new scientific society dedicated to studying space and exogeography from a humanistic perspective and continued to strengthen its focus on the institutional impact of AI on education and society.
Below is a selection of noteworthy Institute initiatives, international partnerships, and contributions to multilateral governance and public diplomacy frameworks:
• In September 2024, the Institute’s Founding Director, Francesco Lapenta, was invited to speak at the United Nations “Summit of the Future” in New York, contributing to the session Governing AI for Humanity, part of the official Action Days program. The event, moderated by the Lawyers Hub and the Stimson Center, focused on the Global Digital Compact and the Pact for the Future initiative of the UN Secretary General.
• In October 2024, the Director was invited to contribute a chapter to the book A New Global Deal: Reforming World Governance, published by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies in preparation for the UN Summit of the Future. His chapter explored AI governance, digital sovereignty, and global cooperation models for technological innovation. Other contributors included senior European policymakers and Club of Rome experts.
• In November 2024, the Director participated in the UN Post-Summit of the Future expert meeting in Brussels, organized by the UN and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies. The event gathered high-level representatives from the European Commission, EEAS, Club of Rome, and UN Secretariat to review the implementation challenges of the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact.
• In May 2024, the Institute hosted a closed-door, high-level roundtable on Disinformation and Elections in the Age of AI-Generated Content at JCU, co-organized with the Center for American Studies and the Guarini Institute. The event brought together EU Commission representatives, academic experts, and international media and technology leaders to address algorithmic manipulation, electoral integrity, and public trust in democratic systems.
• In February 2025, the Institute’s Director delivered two keynote addresses at the Ministry of Education’s “Next Generation AI Summit” in Milan. His talks focused on AI’s structural impact on education systems, digital literacy, and the governance of open data ecosystems. The conference was attended by the Italian Minister of Public Education and marked a major national initiative on AI in education.
• In March 2025, the Institute co-hosted a strategic foresight debate with Florence Gaub, Research Director at the NATO Defense College, at the Luigi Sturzo Institute in Rome. The event, supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Festival of Diplomacy, explored the politics of future-making, strategic uncertainty, and technological acceleration.
• In April 2025, the Institute Director was invited to speak at the Eighth Transatlantic Forum in Rome, organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Center for American Studies. His presentation focused on US–China technological rivalry, the remapping of industrial policy, and the growing strategic centrality of the space economy.
• In May 2025, the Director participated in the Italian Air Force’s “2025 Aerospace Power Conference,” held at the Nuvola Convention Center in Rome. The conference gathered global aerospace, defense, and governance leaders from ESA, NASA, the United States Space Force, and SpaceX. Lapenta contributed to discussions on environmental foresight, space ethics, and aerospace as planetary infrastructure.
• In June 2025, the Institute Director participated in the high-level roundtable “The Future of the Information Environment and Democracy,” held at the Army and Navy Club in London. Organized by the Hanns Seidel Foundation with Chatham House and King’s College, the event brought together international experts, including representatives from NATO, EU institutions, and the Ukrainian government, to discuss democratic resilience, strategic communications, and regulatory coherence in the AI era.
In addition to these landmark initiatives, the Institute continued its collaboration with global organizations such as the UN Centennial Initiative, Boston Global Forum, and the Club of Rome, while engaging in long-term institutional development through its flagship programs on governance, AI and societal transformation, and its focus on education.
