FREE Virtual Legal Work Experience
New from Springpod We’ve partnered with publishing giants Hachette UK to bring your students a Business of Publishing Virtual Work Experience. Traditionally publishing has referred to the creation and distribution of books, newspapers, music and magazines. However, modern publishing has a much wider scope including websites, software, email, blogs and computer games for example. Many students might not be aware of how their skills and interests would translate into a career in publishing but anyone with an interest and/or ability for essay-based or creative subjects will be able to find a niche within the sector to flourish in. Publishing is a notoriously competitive industry with high quality work experience hard to come by. That’s why we are delighted to bring your students this opportunity to interact with industry professionals and complete activities and quizzes as they learn about the publishing industry.
NOVEMBER 2021
In this week long programme students in years 10-13 will be given an overview of the publishing industry and what a career in publishing can offer, looking specifically at areas such as: • Genres at Hachette, • Publishing books, • Marketing, • Sales, • Taking books to the big screen and • Early careers in publishing. Also see the Springpod entry in this newsletter for more opportunities

RAF Careers - 11 November Squadron Leader Jim Tait visited the school to represent the RAF at our annual Service of Remembrance and to give our students valuable advice and guidance related to RAF careers. This is Jim’s last visit in an official capacity as he moves on from his RAF role after 35 years in the service. Jim has been our RAF Careers liaison officer at Hymers for the past 15 years, giving expert help to a great many interested students. Great at putting pupils at there ease, he has a knack of getting the best from them. It is testament to Jim’s engaging personality that many pupils have had repeat appointments
over several years, with some gaining the competitive sixth form scholarships and the highlight being OH, Jacob Cameron-Johnson entering fast jet training in recent years. Jim has been an ever-present at our annual Careers Convention, despite always having another commitment at a University on the other side of the country during the day! We have been able to coincide many of Jim’s visits with his second love of Rugby - the RAF have kindly sponsored several Hymers Sevens tournaments and it has always been the source of topical conversation over lunch.
When we suggested several years ago that Jim represent the Armed Services at our annual Service of Remembrance, he was genuinely delighted to do so. As we experienced recently, the service is a wonderful and poignant occasion and it has been an honour to have Jim as a part of this. P MEADWAY | Head of Careers
