One of the great things about living in Brookberry Farm is the ability to interact with your neighbors. You’re invited to a Springtime Bluegrass & Barbecue at The Village Green on Sunday, May 22 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The evening will feature music from the legendary Big Ron Hunter, who many call the world’s happiest Bluesman. He owns a voice that gives people chills. It’s the kind of voice that carries warmth and tenderness, a voice that is unmistakably his own and embodies everything that’s raw, pure and beautiful about the blues.

Here’s how to set up players: One player per team: four balls per player Two players per team: two balls per player Four players per team: one ball per player Playing Bocce The game consists of several frames. A frame starts with one team tossing the pallino towards the opposite end of the playing court.

The game (frame) is complete after the balls have been thrown and points awarded. Balls are tossed or rolled underhand.

Whoever wins the coin toss begins by tossing the pallino into the playing area. The pallino must be thrown past the center line and not further than the four-foot line. If the pallino lands out of the designated area, the opposing team throws the pallino into the playing area.

The object of the game is to roll your bocce balls closer to the pallino (jack) ball than your opponent. The Bocce court in The Village is a standard 60 feet long by 12 feet wide.

12 FEET WIDE

Once the pallino is in position, the first team throws their bocce ball.

Taking alternate turns, each team throws their balls toward the pallino to (A) get their ball closest to the pallino, (B) to move the pallino closer to their ball, or (C) move the opponent’s ball. The winning team begins the next frame.

Frames are played alternately from one end of the court to the other.

In each frame, only one team scores. One point is given for each bocce ball that is closer to the pallino than the opposing team’s bocce balls. The pallino distance marker can be used to determine which balls are closer.

The game continues until 12 points have been scored or to a pre-determined point number set by the players before the game starts. Now, grab some friends and head to The Village for some bocce ball fun!

TIPS

Your bocce throw can be a toss, roll, or bounce, and its encouraged to “spock” an opponent’s ball away from the pallino. Make defensive moves by bumping the jack to a new position away from your opponent’s ball or play offense and surround it with your team’s balls.

BLOCKING

Blocking is the tactic of setting up a perimeter of your own color around the jack to prevent your opponent from gaining the inside position.

BANKING

Much like pool, when playing in a court with side rails, you can bank off the side rails to position your ball around an opponent’s blocks.

SPOCKING

When attempting to “spock” an opponents ball you can throw from the hitting line, after declaring that as your intention.

BUMPING

Manipulation of the jack with your throw is known as bumping. One come-back strategy is to knock the jack into a group of your own color as one of your final throws.

Now that we are finished with the cold and late-winter-like weather, it’s time to make your yard a showplace. By adding annual and perennial flowers to your home’s outside, you can turn it into a mini paradise that you are able to enjoy for months to come.

Annual flowers will bloom from planting time all the way until the first frost in the fall. They will not come back next year. However, perennial flowers will come back year after year. They will not have the sustained bloom time like annuals but are certainly a worthy candidate to plant as the color they can provide is fabulous – plus, you don’t have to replant them every year.

Most gardens that are showy and have year round appeal use a combination of both annuals and perennial flowers. Mixing the annual and perennial flowers with flowering shrubs can lead to a dramatic effect and impact for your enjoyment and curb appeal. Making sure you select the right plant for the right spot is always important. Check the area to make sure you have a handle on the amount of sun that is in the area you are planting. Also, you will want to amend the soil with organic matter if you have heavy red clay. This will facilitate a better root system and therefore more COLOR.
