Colossians Chapter 1:1-14

As we enter the book of Colossians we should note how Paul confronts the various errors facing these Christians. He forcefully preaches God’s message, because the truth needs to be proclaimed fully and plainly that the proponents of error lose their foothold upon the minds of men (Titus 1:9-11), and such preaching must get down to specifics (Colossians 1:15-19; 2:9; 2023). This letter also contains what some call "Christian tact". Before one deals with a negative situation, give credit where credit is due, so before Paul warns the Colossians, he praises them for their faith and love (1:4) Colossians 1:1 “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother” “An apostle of Christ Jesus”: '”t is not necessary to refer to Paul as ‘Saint Paul’, for such a title actually downgrades him. All Christians are ‘saints’, but not all are apostles. The word ‘apostle’ emphasizes the truth that Paul was Christ's representative, not the representative of the church. He was not an apostle appointed by ecclesiastical authority. Thus the medieval conceit that the Holy Scriptures belonged to the church and were in some sense the property of it and therefore subject to their exclusive interpretation is defeated and 1
