Success Starts Here

Top three reasons families choose top UK boarding and day schools

Investing in your child’s education is the greatest gift that you can give to them. And while the financial commitment is getting greater, the future workplace is becoming more competitive too.

For the past sixteen years I have been helping parents choose the right school for their daughters and sons. They remain popular, despite the challenges of the economic tailwinds because:

• Academic advancement – UK boarding schools offer a world-class curriculum, top-tier teachers, and cutting-edge facilities, ensuring students gain a competitive academic edge for future success.

• Cultural connections – Exposure to a diverse, international community fosters cultural awareness, broadens perspectives, and equips students with the social skills needed for global citizenship.

• Holistic health – The schools in this magazine emphasise not just academics, but also personal growth through co-curricular activities, elite sports, leadership programmes, and character-building experiences.

Sowing the seeds of an outstanding education at one of the schools taking part in UK Boarding Schools Week will reap a rich harvest in their lives and set them up for success.

Exploring British Education: Insights from the UK Boarding Schools Week in South Africa

on PCDcast

During the UK Boarding Schools Week exhibition in South Africa, David Bell interviewed three schools for a special edition of PCDcast!

David: “We’re here on the sunny terrace of the Radisson Blu Sandton, Johannesburg. Lindi Smit from LVS Ascot, it’s been great having you with us this week. What’s your sense of the opportunities and demand for UK education?”

Lindi: “There’s significant interest, especially from families relocating for work, whether short-term or long-term. They want to understand how the UK education system can work for their children and complement what they’re experiencing here.”

David: “Sarah Travis from TASIS England, how has your week in South Africa been?”

Sarah: “It’s been fantastic, David! Engaging with high-net-worth advisors and parents has been wonderful— there’s a real enthusiasm for exploring educational opportunities in the UK.”

David: “And finally, we have Henrietta

Lightwood from Dukes Education. Henrietta, what has stood out to you as the key opportunity for South African families?”

Henrietta: “Helping families understand that starting a UK education slightly earlier can open pathways to top global universities. Many don’t realise there are foundation programmes that align with the South African curriculum, offering a fast-track to university with flexible start dates.”

David: “That wraps up this special edition of PCDcast from the Radisson Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg. Thanks for tuning in, and we’ll see you next time!”

A “seamless” UK school placement journey

Navigating the UK school placement process can be challenging, especially for families overseas.

For one Nigerian father, the expertise of Mark Brooks Education proved to be essential in successfully placing his two children in top UK schools.

Reflecting on the experience, he describes the invaluable role that Mark Brooks Education played in making this transition smooth and stress-free.

“Using Mark Brooks Education as a consultant has been invaluable,” he shares.

“We were looking to place two of our children in UK schools, and it would have been very difficult for us to achieve what we wanted on our own, especially in the time frame we had.”

One of the key benefits was how seamlessly the process unfolded.

“They made the entire process seamless and painless,” he explains. Mark Brooks Education handled everything efficiently, eliminating much of the usual stress and complexity that comes with school placements abroad.

“Their guidance took away much of the stress that would otherwise come with trying to place our children in schools overseas.”

For this family, the most significant advantage was Mark Brooks Education’s in-depth knowledge of the UK education system.

“Their deep knowledge of the education space was what was most valuable to us,” he notes.

The consultancy provided expert advice tailored to each child’s unique needs, allowing the family to make well-informed choices and feel confident about the placements.

“They really understand the UK school system, from admissions to finding the right fit for each child,” he concludes.

We filmed this interview recently at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate and posed the question to a student from Lagos, Nigeria “what are the benefits of joining a UK boarding school at a younger age, rather than waiting until the Sixth Form.”

A world of friendship and culture: a student’s journey at TASIS England

At TASIS England, students from across the globe come together in a community that celebrates diversity, culture, and shared experiences.

One student, reflecting on their journey, shared a glimpse into the vibrant life on campus and the lasting impact the school has had on them.

The student’s recent experience at the school’s International Festival captures the spirit of TASIS England perfectly.

“Today I’ve been working at the Nigerian stand at the International Festival, serving food to people coming by,” she shared. “It’s been very fun.”

“How has the TASIS experience been for me? I’d say it’s been a very good experience,” she said.

Meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures has been one of the most rewarding aspects of their time here.

“I’ve met many people from many backgrounds that I’d never even heard of,” she added.

At TASIS England, friendships often transcend borders, and the student noted how eye-opening it has been to form connections with classmates from all over the world.

“Just having friends from so many places that I never thought I would ever hear of or meet people from—that’s been a really big part.”

The academic experience at TASIS England has also left a strong impression.

“I’ve learned a lot from teachers. I love everything about it.”

Beyond academics, it’s a community where students are encouraged to explore, engage, and grow as individuals.

Beyond the ordinary

Jade, a student Mark Brooks Education has helped place in a school, shares how the company’s tailor-made approach left a lasting impression on her and her family.

“Something that stood out to my family and I was the truly hyper-personalised approach that Mark takes to getting to know each and every one of his students before recommending schools,” Jade said.

“It really went beyond the typical, ‘Oh, what subject do you want to study, what school offers it—there you go.’”

Even after moving on to higher education at the University of St Andrews and now starting a career with Accenture in London, Jade feels the continued support from Mark and his team. “Mark is still

right there cheering me on, Tracey is still there cheering me on,” she shared.

Jade expressed heartfelt gratitude for the consistent encouragement and commitment she experienced.

“Thank you so much, Tracey, and thank you so much, Mark, for all the investment, encouragement, and genuine care that you have put into my educational journey, my sister’s journey, and all the students that have come under your care.”

Navigating UK school admissions

For families seeking quality education for their children in the UK, the school admissions process can seem daunting.

However, Lucy, a mother from Nigeria, shares how Mark Brooks Consulting made this journey manageable.

“Mark Brooks helped us navigate the complex admissions process with ease,” Lucy explains.

“He has unrivalled access to a network of schools in the UK, along with unmatched expertise in the admissions process.”

“So, as a family, it was easy for us to secure a school for our son without the worries of choosing the right schools or assessing if their values aligned with ours.”

Lucy emphasizes that working with Mark Brooks allowed her family to make a

confident choice for her son’s education, knowing they were in capable hands.

“It was a hitch-free, seamless, and professional experience,” she says.

“The entire process was taken care of for us.”

“It doesn’t just end with admissions. Mark’s team offers hand-holding every step of the way—from the initial consultation to admissions, and even helping our son settle into his new environment,” she adds.

For families like Lucy’s, Mark Brooks Education provides not only expertise but also peace of mind throughout the entire education journey.

Letchworth Garden City SG6 3JZ

St Chris was founded in 1915 to transform the way children experienced school.

Since then, we’ve redefined the way children learn, grow, and thrive in a world that’s ever-changing.

There is no falsity here. No pretending. No inauthenticity.

When you visit St Chris you will see us for who we really are – dressed comfortably and as befits who each one of us really is; not all made ‘uniform’.

You will hear us for who really are; unquestioningly respectful, but Rich, Aziz or Li not ‘sir’ or ‘miss’.

There are no unnecessary barriers to being yourself at St Chris. These things may seem small but they matter for what they mean. We’re in this together.

Fragomen’s role is to offer a dedicated consultancy to families to help with the processing of the visa application.

“Should there be any delay or complexities we are able to reach out to the UKVI, the UK authorities to help with the process.”

Navigating Financial Commitment

As more Nigerian families choose to educate their children in UK boarding schools, financial planning has become crucial to manage rising costs and currency fluctuations.

W8 Advisory has stepped in to support these families, helping them secure their children’s education through careful financial planning and foresight.

“We understand the significant financial commitment these families have made,” says Bimpe Nkontchou of W8 Advisory.

“For many, it’s not just about covering today’s fees; it’s about ensuring that the fees can continue to be paid, even if the parents’ circumstances change in the future.”

Given the volatility of the Naira, families often face challenges in converting their income to meet fees denominated in pounds.

This is compounded by the fact that many parents in Nigeria earn their income in Naira, making currency fluctuations a risk to consistent payments.

“We’ve seen the effects of exchange rate fluctuations firsthand,” Bimpe explains.

“Our role is to help these families plan for potential increases, ensuring that their children’s education won’t be interrupted by financial constraints.”

W8 Advisory also guides families through tax planning, particularly as they may spend extended time in the UK.

For Nigerian families, ensuring financial stability in the face of these challenges is essential, and with W8 Advisory’s guidance, they can feel more confident in their children’s educational future.
