The smell of pine tar and beeswax, of marline and hemp rope, of cedar shavings, green oak and Douglas fir The buttery smoothness of Alaska Yellow Cedar and the rich color of copper rivets and roves. The beautiful curves of boat frames, the hiss and chuckle of a steam box, and the feel of a hand plane or draw knife as they cut a rabbet or shape a plank.

These and many other images, sounds, and smells come to mind when I think of the Astoria Railroad Depot and what it will be like once it is restored. A vibrant and exciting addition to the Museum and to the community, the restored Depot will provide space for practical classes, workshops and demonstrations of traditional skills and trades relevant to the maritime culture of the Columbia River and beyond.

Constructed in 1925 by the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railroad, the Depot was given to the Columbia River Maritime Museum in 1987 by the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Although the Depot has not been significantly altered, it is in need of extensive repairs if it is to survive. Restoration work has already begun with architectural and engineering drawings being done by Ecola Architects. Work will start on a serious crack on the east end of the East Wing, followed by the restoration of all of the building's brick fa;:ade. The Museum is partnering with the Historic Preservation and Restoration Program of Clatsop Community College to restore all the windows and doors to their original appearance.

Once restored the Depot will be financially self-sustaining through fees for classes and workshops, the rental of space to the prestigious WoodenBoat School of Brooklin, Maine for boathnil<ling an<l othP-r dassP-s , and to the Historic Preservation and Restoration Program. One of the most interesting ways to support the Depot will be through the establishment of a "legacy business," making copper rivets and roves for the construction of traditional Scandinavian-style lapstrake boats.

The manufacture of copper boat nails fits very well into the plans for the Depot. Not only are the antique nail-making machines fascinating to watch, but, in addition to supplying the Depot boat building and restoration programs with a steady supply of copper rivets and roves, the Museum will also be able to supply them to other museums, boat building programs, and boat builders, helping to keep alive a 2000 year-old tradition of boat building. In operation, the Museum will be the only manufacturer of these nails outside of England.

The public and educational activities planned for the historic Astoria Railroad Depot will complement and augment the fine exhibits and activities already taking place in the main Museum building. They will demonstrate past and present cultural activities of the region that rarely can be viewed by the general public. Who can resist watching someone mend a net, make a monkey's fist knot, or deftly pull a piece of oak from a steam box and twist it into a wooden hoop for holding sails against a mast? And where else will you be able to learn how to build a small traditional boat, set a gillnet, caulk a plank seam, or carve a name board for a boat?

But to do these things and more we need first to restore the Depot building Presently, indu<liug iu-kiu<l au<l pledges we have al>uul $745,000 towards a project goal of $2.1 million. To secure support from the major foundations it is important to show that this project is broadly supported by our membership and by the community. So please consider a gift of any size, large or small to the Museum for this project and help preserve the historic Astoria Railroad Depot and enable the Museum to better serve present and future generations.

The Crew of the Pilot Launch Arrow 2

No vessel is more iconic to Astoria's proud heritage as a working waterfront than the Arrow 2. She has been seen working off Astoria for over 50 years. We are pleased to present a behind the scenes l_ook at the crew of the Arrow 2 who keep her running 24 hours day through the worst of weather. This article is selected from a chapter in an upcoming book about the river pilots by John Rekart, Museum docent and Lightship volunteer.

Foss Maritime owns and operates the river pilot launch Arrow 2. Foss crews provide for the pilot exchanges in Astoria on a 24-hour basis.

Foss Maritime's story is as much about the people as it is about the equipment they operate. The Foss Portland office looks out over the Willamette River

just north of the St. Johns Bridge.

The Arrow 2 was built for Arrow Tug & Barge by the Nichols Boat Works in Hood River, Oregon. It was delivered to Astoria in 1960 and the pilothouse was added there. It is classified as a light tug. The Arrow 2 last weighed in at a modest 33 gross tons with a 13.9' beam and a length of 51.9'. The Nichols Boat Works was established in 1939 and built many vessels, some of which are still operating today. The Nichols facility in Hood River closed in 1988.

When the Arrow 2 was built, the ships involved in commerce on the river were much smaller. Over time engine capacity has been increased but the size and bulk of the tug remain the same. The Arrow 2 is probably too small for some of the con-

tainerships (like the Hanjin or Cosco 918' class) or the larger car carriers and Panamax bulkers. Plans are in the works for a new river pilot launch and the Arrow 2 may finally retire after more than 50 years of service.

The Arrow 2 was recently awarded the Jones F. Devlin Award by the Chamber of Shipping of America at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon in New Orleans, Louisiana . It is an award for self-propelled vessels that have operated safely for two full years or more without a crew member losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. The Arrow 2 has been injury-free for nine years. Foss' use of a "Job Safety Analysis" program helps toward their goal of a safe workplace environment in a hazardous business.

Training and drills are a constant occurrence onboard the Arrow 2. From my vantage point on the Lightship Columbia,

I saw the crew of the Arrow 2 performing a "man overboard" drill just 100 yards upriver from the Columbia River Maritime Museum. A new relief deckhand was receiving training on all the procedures and equipment used including life preservers, boathooks and the deployment of the rail ladder.

The launch crew consisting of Evart Smith and Leonard Haglund commented that the drill was not all that realistic because they didn't actually have a live person in the water. It did demonstrate what gear was available and how it was to be used. The rail ladder was utilized only when the launch stopped moving and the person in the water could help themselves aboard. The trainee was happy that when the life jacket was thrown overboard, he was not attached to it for the sake of realism in the drill.

Leonard was one of twelve children

from a family that grew up on the John Day River, just outside Astoria. The "highway" at that time was a wood plank road and old Ford Model A and Model T cars bumped their way along its length. He said that from his house along the John Day he can still see the track where teams of oxen pulled logs down to the nver.

The Haglund family had gillnet drifts from Tongue Point through most of Astoria and as a young boy, Leonard worked all their boats. They cleaned up all the drifts by pulling snags so they wouldn't tear up any of their nets.

Leonard worked many fisheries on the Columbia and even up in Alaska for a time. He finally settled back in Astoria and handled the log rafts that dominated the waterfront there. Like many others, he worked and trained with Frank Vollmer before going to work for Knappton and the river pilot launch.

Evart Smith was raised on the other side of the river at Altoona, Washington. From this location as a young boy, he could see all the activity on the river, especially all the tugs and log rafts. He began to recognize all the different crews and was readily accepted into that group when he was old enough. He remembers when many tugs were stationed in Astoria to move around the ships that berthed at the port docks. A large number of them were loaded with logs pulled from rafts. The logs were sized to fit on the log trucks that transported them. Evart commented that the logs were much larger then. He has been a launch operator since 2000 working for Knappton and Brix and now, Foss Maritime. He still lives across the river in Washington. He said, "I was born and raised on the river and if I get away from the water too long, the webbing between my toes falls away."

He managed the office here in Astoria

awhile. Although he worked on the river a long time, he doesn't have many memories of the ferries that used to carry cars and passengers between Astoria and Megler on the Washington side of the river. All that remains visible is a plaque on the short pier at the end of 14th Street and the rotting pilings associated with the ferry slip that was there for so many years . The ferries were made obsolete when the "Bridge to Nowhere," as the Astoria Bridge was called, allowed cars to reach the Long Beach Peninsula much more easily and quickly. Evart said that most of the launch operators started out as deckhands on local tugs and trained with Frank Vollmer. Captain Vollmer operated the pilot launch Arrow 2 for a time and most of the equipment for Arrow Tug & Barge including the Arrow 3, which was used mainly for hauling log rafts. Evart's son, Aaron, is a river pilot so that kind of life must run in their family's blood.

LeRoy Schlecht began working as a deckhand on charter boats in his early teens. He would work the entire summer out of the Astoria area. One day, to pay expenses, he was painting the inside of the Buoy 9 Restaurant in Hammond. A tugboat captain, Bill Davis Sr., found him there and mentioned that he would offer him a job on the river when he was old enough. After graduating from high school, the young man remembered the promise and looked up the tug captain. The job offer was real and LeRoy began his life on the river.

No one calls him LeRoy. He is "Splash!" He was asked if he minded explaining how he acquired that nickname. It seems that during his early years on the river working on the log rafts, he would fall in the water four or five times a day. According to differing accounts, it was Bill Davis Sr., Frank Vollmer or Chris Henry who just started calling him "Splash." Frank's nickname was "Crash,"

possibly a CB "handle" from the days when tug captains used those radios, and "Crash" and "Splash" were inseparable after that. Years of hard work eventually resulted in a job as pilot launch operator.

Captain Schlecht said that his wife, kids and even his Mom call him "Splash." His other occupation as a scuba diver keeps him busy diving off boats to clear lines out of props and cleaning hulls. [His nickname has taken on new meaning with this added job.]

Jim Davis grew up with a family history of river work. His uncle, Bill Davis Sr. was a tug captain who worked out of the Port Docks moving logs. At the time

Jim was growing up, there were seven log tugs working out of Astoria and the work was very much around-the-clock. Many of the cr ews slept on the boats . Jim worked at the BumbleBee cannery for a time Eventually, the opportunity to work on the rive r came one year during elk hunting season. He was called in to take someone's place and he has been working ever since on the river; the pay was much better and he never looked back.

Captain Jim began working part-time in 1969 and went full-time in 1970. He did his share of moving logs and worked as a deckhand for five years before moving into the wheelhouse. One of his work boats was the Arrow I and another was the Tonquin, hauling logs out of Youngs River. He has seen all the changes on the river over the last 40 years. The river launch pilot job is challenging but still remains a fun job. Many pilots have told me that if the job ceases to be fun anymore, they will hang it up, "swallow the anchor" and retire.

Billy Davis has worked on the river 34 years. His father, Bill, helped him start when he was only 17 working as a deckhand out of Portland. By the time he was 21 he was operating a tug in the

harbor and on the upper river as far as Lewiston. He lived in the Astoria area the whole time. Billy takes four months off the job each year from May through September for his own fishing business. It is not unusual for him to work as many as 40 consecutive days in that capacity. He guides on the river for sturgeon and salmon and also goes out over the bar. He has his hand in commercial clam-digging as well. He gillnetted for 20 years until it became unprofitable.

In his spare time, he collects glass floats and other things that find their way to the Oregon Coast and the river. I had heard that finding glass floats had become a very rare thing indeed but Billy said that they are still out there and he knows exactly where anJ when lo finJ lhem. He learned the tricks of the trade from his dad and his grandfather. He plans on writing a book on the subject when his life quiets down a bit more.

John Ivanoff is one of those versatile people working on the pilot launch. He

doubles as a launch operator and fills in, when needed, on deck. He gave me very detailed safety briefings on all the gear Bar Pilot Captain Debbie Dempsey with Mike Davis in pilothouse of Arrow 2. Photo courtesy John Rekart Fred Snaza assisting Captain Wayne Stolz down the ladder.

at the disposal of the crew in emergency situations. My brother and I went out on several pilot exchanges with John at the helm. John started gillnetting like many in the Astoria area and looked for more consistent work. He joked, "I was

born in the bow of a bow-picker off Sand Island." He began his career with Knappton as a cook in 1983. With seniority a few years later, he started decking on the boats. His father-in-law, Andy Carlson, operated the bar pilot boats for more than 30 years.

Mike Davis was another local boy who began working on the river immediately after high school, just like his brother Billy. Years of work on tugs in Portland and Astoria led to the pilot house of the Arrow 2. Hard work and persistence paved the way for his selection to the Columbia River Pilots Association.

Jerry Tucker started working on the river courtesy of his father-in-law, Chris Henry. Like most of the locals, he began working log rafts with Captains Bill Davis Sr. and Prank Vollmer. Ile went wherever the jobs took him. It could be the Port Docks one day or hauling a log raft out of Deep River the next. He gained a lot of experience but the jobs on the river have not remained constant. "When the times change, you have to change with them."

Jerry has worked for Foss, or the companies it absorbed, since 1976 He started with Knappton.

Fred Snaza said that when he was only eight or nine, he had worked for Harry Truman up at the Spirit Lake Lodge near Mount St. Helens. He really liked the old guy and thought he was quite a character.

Fred came back to the area later and did a lot of logging for Weyerhaeuser on Mount St. Helens before it erupted Narrowly missing that cataclysmic event, he sought safer work. With the help of a librarian in Longview, he began a search for a new career. River jobs seemed atThe QuarterDeck, Vol 37 No. 1&2

tractive and he put in his application with all the tug companies. He began to work on the river and spent years on the tugs and hauling cable. He said it was very hard on the body and he was glad to get onto the pilot launch- no cables to work.

For more of Johns story about the river pilots, keep an eye out for his soonto-be published book Rollin' On The River available in the Museum Store.

Volunteers

Volunteers are crucial to the success of any non-profit organization, and the Columbia River Maritime Museum is proud to have the finest examples of excellence and dedication that a healthy museum needs to thrive.

Serving in a myriad of capacities, the Museum volunteers work in the office, lead docent tours, work with the educational programs, work retail operations, catalog archives, and are often the smiling face the visitor sees at the beginning or end of their tour. Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, and their experiences bring a wide range of knowledge to every area of the Museum.

Last year brought over 75 volunteers with a total of 5,904 work-hours generously donated to the Museum - over 16 volunteer hours per day! There is a sense of commitment and responsibility among those who volunteer here and they take their duties seriously. They come because they enjoy the interaction, but they

also want to contribute to the excellence and success of the Museum.

The staff of the Columbia River Maritime Museum recognizes that the volunteers we have could be using their personalities and expertise elsewhere, but they choose to spend it here and we are very fortunate to be able to work shoulder to shoulder with these fine people. And if you haven't set a time to talk with Volunteer Coordinator Jackie Welborn to see how you could be a part of this dynamic team, feel free to do so now503.325.2323 or welborn@crmm.org.
