much-needed funding to renovate, rebuild and modernize outdated medical facilities. We’re excited to continue work on the new Valleywise Health Medical Center that’s slated to open in 2023. This state-of-the-art facility will provide emergency services, acute care, surgery, as well as women’s and pediatric services.

WHY OUR WORK IS VITAL: In September 2020, IBM recognized Valleywise Health as one of its 100 Top Hospitals. The first-time recognition as one of the top-performing major teaching hospitals in the U.S., and the only teaching hospital in Arizona, is significant. The Top Hospitals recognition spotlights Valleywise Health as a leader among the thousands of short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in our country. It is based on excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health.

Of the 100 hospitals honored this year, only 15 are large teaching hospitals. Valleywise was also recognized with an IBM Watson Everest Award for exhibiting significant financial and operational improvement over the past five years. They are the only Arizona hospital to earn this designation.

LOCALIZED MEDICAL CARE AND EDUCATION Arizona remains one of the fast-growing states in the U.S. and Maricopa County, the state’s center of economic activity, is home to more than 60 percent of our population. While this is good news for our economy, it puts a burden on our health system and its ability to provide care to our residents.

Simply put: our population growth rate has exceeded the rate of increase in the number of physicians practicing by a wide margin.

This has resulted in Arizona having one of the lowest ratios of physicians to population in the country. This includes acute shortages in certain practice areas such as primary care and surgery. There are presently 543 fewer primary care physicians than generally accepted standards of care indicate are needed to serve our current population. By 2030, it is estimated that we will need nearly 2,000 additional primary care providers in our state. Unfortunately, there is a comparable deficit in general surgeons as well.

Valleywise Health is the only public teaching health system and the principal provider of medical resident clinical training in Maricopa County. In partnership with the District Medical Group and Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance was formed in 2018. In these programs, Valleywise provides clinical training for medical residents and fellows, with all Alliance residents completing rotations at our facilities. Additionally, through non-Alliance affiliate programs, 107 medical residents presently receive training at Valleywise Health each year.

The Alliance supports an exponential expansion of health education programs in Arizona, creating a new day for health education in our county and state. Through expansion and improvement, the Alliance estimates it will facilitate the training of more than 800 new healthcare professionals in the Valley over the next six years.

UNPARALLELED LEARNING AND TEACHING Academic medical centers oftentimes see the most challenging cases. This provides for a fertile learning environment for students pursuing a career in healthcare.

This is why our partnerships with local providers are so critical for advanced medical education.

In addition, Valleywise Health gives physicians training opportunities that are complex and not available at all teaching hospitals. These specialty areas include emergency trauma, burn care, and behavioral health.

MEDICAL EDUCATION: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT At Valleywise Health, we want to ensure the very best in patient care. We also want to develop our staff to help them to realize their professional goals. As our care model becomes more specialized, we look to identify opportunities for advancement in clinical skills throughout the healthcare system.

Clinical training was formerly an exclusively “hands-on” process. However, advances in technology have resulted in training also being conducted through applied learning and simulation. In addition to the more efficient use of instructional resources, modern simulation tools allow for endless repetition and an opportunity to experience variables that may not take place with hands-on training. Simulation training scenarios also enable interprofessional development, as multidisciplinary teams learn to work together seamlessly to deliver bedside care. This provides a greater depth of experience and, correspondingly, medical residents who are better prepared to treat patients.

To most effectively use these tools requires an on-site state-of-the-art facility and a comprehensive simulation program.

Whereas the Valleywise residency program is recognized as offering some of the best “hands-on” training available, much of the applied learning is conducted in off-site, outdated facilities with old equipment.

To ensure residents effectively master clinical decision-making skills in a 21st century healthcare setting, Valleywise Health is building modernized facilities and a comprehensive simulation training program.

Access to a strong simulation program is essential for medical residents, nurses and those seeking graduate medical education or continued education at Valleywise Health. Simulation training is a powerful learning tool that is both immersive and experiential. We are looking to develop a stand-alone facility for our simulation training. This multi-million dollar comprehensive simulation training program will serve as the fundamental element of our clinical training programs. Access to this program is essential for medical residents while they train at Valleywise facilities across Maricopa County.

SIMULATION TECHNOLOGY Simulation technology allows students to practice vital care techniques.

Simulation mannequins can bleed, have heart attacks and even give birth. Students practice how to give IV’s and practice interdisciplinary models of care with nurses, physicians and other health team members.

Instructors review each simulated care exercise so that students can safely learn to enhance the efficacy of their treatment. These simulations have proven to be effective and extremely cost efficient.

Advancements in simulation technology provide customized learning experiences designed to replicate triage areas, surgical suites, trauma bays, clinic rooms and more. It blends communication skills with human and technology-based training.

While university-based education focuses on using simulation for same-discipline skill building, the experience gained at Valleywise Health transitions healthcare workers into real-world delivery of care.

Simulation technology enables students to hone their skills before treating “real” patients and allows seasoned professionals to train for rare, challenging, and high-risk procedures.

With the Alliance attracting students from around the country to Maricopa County, Valleywise Health must establish a comprehensive training environment needed for residents to effectively master clinical decision-making skills. Through support from the voters in Maricopa County and a grant from the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority, Valleywise Health is in the process of building a comprehensive simulation center. It is slated to open in late 2023.

However, additional philanthropic support is needed to provide and sustain state-of-the-art equipment at the main hospital campus.

Without a contemporary, robust simulation program, Valleywise Health residency programs will be forced to refer this valuable training to other health system locations. This creates a long list of disadvantages that include travel costs, lost productivity, lack of teamwork and other impediments to dynamic learning.

ADVANCED LEARNING FOR A HEALTHY ARIZONA In today's ever-changing healthcare environment, patient care is becoming even more complex. This requires nurses who are adequately prepared to meet the needs of a diverse patient population. A societal need to improve outcomes has driven researchers to examine factors that lead to lower morbidity and mortality rates, decrease medication errors, and decrease failure-to-rescue rates in healthcare facilities. Data suggest a strong correlation between these outcomes and BSN-prepared nurses with more advanced degrees.

With expansive developments in technology, the impression that fundamental nursing education will suffice is no longer prudent.

Healthcare employers recognize the impact of advanced degrees and hire nurses who meet these standards. Data indicate that greater than 75 percent of nursing employers prefer new graduate nurses with a BSN rather than an associate degree (ADN).

The American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing endorse lifelong learning for nurses. Many state boards of nursing require continuing-education hours.

Lifelong learning will continue to be a critical element in the nursing profession as interprofessional practice unfolds in healthcare and as the role of the nurse changes to meet the needs of the nation.

There has not been a year until 2020, with the global pandemic, that the general public could appreciate the acute need for advanced critical care education. One of the biggest reasons why an increasing number of healthcare facilities are looking to only hire nurses with an advanced degree is that it creates a significant positive impact in terms of patient care.

Care within the hospital setting continues to grow more complex, and nurses must make critical decisions associated with care for patients. Care in this setting depends on sophisticated, life-saving technology coupled with complex information management systems that require skills in analysis.

Care outside the hospital is becoming more complex as well. Nurses are being called upon to coordinate care among a variety of clinicians and community agencies. They are expected to help patients manage chronic illnesses, thereby preventing acute care episodes or disease progression; and to use a variety of technological tools to improve the effectiveness of care. A more educated nursing workforce would be better equipped to meet these demands.

Introducing advanced degrees can offer a chance to augment existing training programs that reflect greater responsibilities within this role. They can also offer a path for mid-career professionals to move into leadership positions. Since 2016, Valleywise Health Foundation, in partnership with Valleywise Health, awarded nearly 40 scholarships to nurses pursuing advanced degrees.

This is why programs and services supported by Valleywise are so crucial to a healthy and prosperous community.
