Thank you for joining the Valleywise Health Foundation as we share a story of gratitude and compassion at Valleywise Health.

The Brown family's story is one of heartbreaking loss, yet the compassionate care John, Mandy and their son, Will, received in the darkest of hours, compelled them to speak out.

We are here to honor the doctors, nurses and medical professionals at Valleywise Health who choose to teach and practice at Arizona's public teaching health system.

"I had no idea" is a response we often hear when visitors tour the hospitals and clinics of Valleywise Health for the first time.

For more than 140 years, Valleywise Health, (formerly known as Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) or the "County" hospital, has stepped in - and stepped up to address the most critical health care needs for the people of Arizona.

Many people don't realize Valleywise Health is home to: One of the largest and longest-running physician training programs in the state, A level-I trauma center treating both adults and children, keeping families together in their time of need, The Arizona Burn Center - Valleywise Health, Arizona's only nationally verified burn center, and one of the premier academic burn centers in the country, A mission to provide exceptional care, without exception, every patient, every time, regardless of a patient's ability to pay, Three behavioral health hospitals - making Valleywise Health the largest provider of inpatient behavioral health services in Arizona.

After hearing the Brown's story today, we hope you'll leave with an understanding of why we are passionate about giving back to this place that is always there for all of us.

Valleywise Health is Arizona's public teaching health system serving the greater Phoenix area for more than 143 years.

Its Graduate Medical Education programs range from emergency medicine to adult and child psychiatry and are now a part of the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance.

The Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance oversees the Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs for two of the Valley's largest healthcare institutions - Valleywise Health and Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, as well as the program for District Medical Group.

Love beyond loss

Natives of New Jersey and South Carolina, Mandy and John Brown moved to Arizona from Florida in 1997 along with their young son, Will.

Handsome and precocious, Will excelled at sports, was active in his church, and volunteered at Phoenix Rescue Mission.

A Chaparral High School football player, he was recruited to play Division 1A football at Samford University in Alabama - and went on to become a talented and respected strength and conditioning coach.

Unknown to most, the demons of addiction haunted Will for years following a sports injury in college.

In August, 2019, John and Mandy received the call they prayed would never come...

Steve Purves President & CEO, Valleywise Health

Steve Purves became President & Chief Executive Officer of Valleywise Health (formerly named Maricopa Integrated Health System) in Phoenix, Arizona in September 2013. Valleywise Health is Arizona’s largest and longest serving public teaching hospital and healthcare system and includes the Valleywise Health Medical Center, the Arizona Burn Center, the Arizona Children’s Center, a Level I Trauma Center, three behavioral health centers and a network of 13 Federally Qualified Health Centers that serve Phoenix and Maricopa County. Mr. Purves works with the publicly elected five-member Board of Directors who represent the Maricopa County Special Health Care District, to provide executive leadership for the growth and development of Valleywise Health. Since 2013, Mr. Purves led a $170 million financial turnaround and helped secure $935 million in general obligation bonds passed by voter referendum in 2014. These funds will allow Valleywise Health to replace aging facilities and to reinvent its’ care model to better serve the public in the years to come.

Mr. Purves is actively involved in the community as an ambassador for Valleywise Health and in a variety of roles outside his health care duties. He serves on the boards of America’s Essential Hospitals, the Arizona Hospital and Health Care Association, the Arizona State University Health Advisory Board and Health Futures Council, Valleywise Health Foundation and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce. He was elected Chairman of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association in 2017. He is a delegate on the Regional Policy Board of the American Hospital Association, and is a member of Greater Phoenix Leadership.

Mr. Purves has over 39 years of service as a health care executive serving in the investor-owned, public, academic and private not-for-profit settings. Prior to joining Valleywise Health, Mr. Purves served 7 years as President & CEO of Munroe Regional Health System, Inc., a public, not-for-profit healthcare system that serves Marion County and North Central Florida. Prior to that Mr. Purves served 8 years as President & CEO of the Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals in Columbia, South Carolina, a two-hospital regional health system serving the midlands of South Carolina. During his time in South Carolina, he served as Adjunct Professor for the University of South Carolina School of Public Health and Chairman of the South Carolina Hospital Association.

Mr. Purves has numerous awards and honors; including an appointment by the Secretary of the Army to the position of Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for South Carolina in 2001. He was awarded the U.S. Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal in 2006. He was named one of the top 25 most influential leaders in Phoenix Arizona by the Phoenix Business Journal in 2017. He was the recipient of political advocacy awards from the American Hospital and the Florida Hospital Associations, and in 2013, was honored with the presentation of the “Key to the City” by the mayor of the City of Ocala during his time in Florida.

He received his Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Purves is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Purves is a native of Roanoke, Virginia.

He and his wife, Mary Anne, have two adult children and two young grandchildren.

Dr. Elizabeth Ferguson Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Elizabeth Ferguson graduated from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN with a degree in chemistry before attending the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and is double-board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Her clinical focus is on restorative and reconstructive breast surgery, though her practice covers the entire spectrum of plastic surgery.

Dr. Ferguson is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and an assistant professor at Creighton University School of Medicine. She serves as the Alliance Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, overseeing more than 20 residency and fellowship programs. She also served as Program Director of the general surgery residency at Maricopa Medical Center for almost 7 years and was previously the Chair of the Department of Surgery and Anesthesia at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and holds current academic appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor at both Midwestern and at the University of Arizona Phoenix College of Medicine.

She is passionate about both undergraduate and graduate medical education, and helping students and residents find their way in medicine and surgery.

Outside of work, Dr. Ferguson spends as much time as possible with her husband, Derek and their young son JD. She is an avid baker, popcorn aficionado, professional people watcher and wanderlust. She is always willing to travel for good coffee, great food and the company of family and friends.

Elizabeth Ferguson, MD, FACS District Medical Group Valleywise Health

Dr. Michael Epter Dr. Michael Epter is the Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at Valleywise Health and the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, and is considered by many to be the country’s expert on Emergency Medicine (EM) education. He has been EM Residency Program Director at Valleywise Health Medical Center since 2013, having previously served in the same role at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas.

Dr. Epter has served as a board member and president of the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM), and as a longstanding board member and Education Chair at the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). In these roles, he relentlessly drove education through new partnerships, personal investment with each resident, and a challenge to not accept the status quo. He has over 200 national lectures, countless committee assignments, and accolades from many of his colleagues.

Most recently, Dr. Epter has taken on a new mission – combating Emergency Medicine resident burnout by promoting the wellness and resilience of his residents and colleagues. With over a decade of experience as a program director, as well as personal challenges he worked through caring for twins born at 24 weeks, he has plenty of wisdom and insight to share with residents, EMS, community groups, students and other physicians. His work has been recognized by AAEM with the Program Director of the Year award, and by the Accreditation Committee of Graduate Medical Education, which awarded him their highest honor, the Parker Palmer Courage to Teach Award. Dr. Epter was named a 2019 Health Care Hero for Health Care Education by the Phoenix Business Journal.

When he recruits, he asks applicants to make their priority caring about the patient. His belief is that when we care, we will cure.

If we don’t care, all the knowledge in the world won’t make up the difference.

Michael Epter, DO He asks them to learn one new thing, District Medical Group, every day, and do it with a humble attitude. Valleywise Health Dr. Epter earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Adelphi University, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. In his free time, Dr. Epter enjoys time with his family, especially his two children who teach him something every day.

Dr. Tamara Armstrong Dr. Tamara Armstrong is a second-year resident in the Emergency Department at Valleywise Health Medical Center. She grew up in both California and Tucson.

Tamara graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in physiology and a minor in French studies.

She then graduated with honors from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, where she spent most of her free time as the director of the student-run free clinic or relaxing at Virginia Beach. Dr. Armstrong's long history of volunteer service includes working with an orphanage in Douala, Cameroon, to providing emotional support and caregiver relief for families in hospice care. Tamara was thrilled to return to Arizona for residency.

Valleywise Health was her top choice because of the welcoming atmosphere and incredible patient population.

She loves working at a hospital with a strong sense of camaraderie and enjoys working alongside a team that genuinely wants the best for every patient.

Dr. Armstrong is a member of the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association and the American Medical Association.

When not at work, Tamara enjoys playing with her cats, buying things on Amazon Prime and finding interesting TV shows to watch with her mom. She also likes attending local events, doing any activity that involves water and trying new restaurants with her friends.

Dr. Nazim Bal Dr. Nazim Bal is a third-year resident physician in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Valleywise Health Medical Center. Originally from California, Dr. Bal earned his bachelor’s degree in biology, with a concentration in physiology and minor in chemistry at Sonoma State University. While at Nazim Bal, DO Sonoma State, he was a member of Valleywise Health the TriBeta National Biological Honor Society, a McNair Scholar and a biology session instructor. From 2008 until 2012, Dr. Bal worked as an Emergency Medical Technician for VeriHealth Inc., a Sonoma County emergency services provider delivering advanced life support and critical care transport, prior to moving to Arizona.

Dr. Bal earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University prior to starting residency at Valleywise Health Medical Center. Dr. Bal is a resident member of the American College of Physicians and has served on numerous Valleywise Health committees, including Quality Improvement and Program Evaluation Committees.

In his free time, Dr. Bal enjoys spending time with his beautiful baby girl, Leyla, and his lovely wife, Heatherann.

Heatherann is also a physician and they enjoy exploring Arizona and traveling abroad together. Dr. Bal spends his remaining free time restoring his grandfather’s 1971 International Harvester Scout 800b.

Story of gratitude Nancy and John Hoopes

On November 12, 2015, Nancy Hoopes came home from grocery shopping and noticed her husband, John, working on a welding project in the backyard.

Within minutes of her arrival, she heard screams and saw John struggling to remove his protective helmet and gloves as he reached for the garden hose.

Realizing John had serious burns on his arms, torso and hands, Nancy quickly dialed 911 as he went into shock. When paramedics arrived, there was no question where he would go – the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health.

For five weeks, John received expert care at one of the top burn centers in the country. He had excellent insurance which covered the round-the-clock monitoring and specialized burn expertise. But as he got to know everyone, from the doctors and nurses, to the nutritionists and physical therapists – something became very clear – they truly cared.

“It was very apparent it made no difference whether someone had ‘gold plated’ insurance or no way to pay,” he said. “Everyone was treated the same – with kindness and respect.”

As a result of his experience, and with a desire to give back, Nancy and John Hoopes and his company, Salt River Project have become vocal supporters of Valleywise Health. In January 2020, John became Vice Chairman of the Valleywise Health Foundation board of directors, having previously served as the board’s secretary and treasurer.

“I’ll never forget Dr. Matthews calling to check in a week after I was released, or a nurse who saw me on a Foundation tour, so happy to see me recovered and doing well,” he said. “She told me, ‘This is what we live for,’ and you can tell… they do.”

Karie Dozer emcees and hosts local business presentations and community events, creates presentations and coaches professionals in their delivery, and provides the voice talent for commercial and non-broadcast audio and video productions.

Karie has worked in and around Phoenix media for more than 20 years. Karie has hosted a number of different weekday and weekend radio shows at the radio station that gave her her first job out of college, KTAR, now 92.3 FM Phoenix.

Most recently, she co-hosted a midday talk show covering local and national news and events.

Karie loves local radio because of its immediate and intimate connection to listeners, and its familiar place in their daily lives.
