Welcome to Valleywise Health Foundation’s 2021 Night of Heroes.

As we have since our first Night of Heroes in 2017, honoring retired Phoenix Police officer Jason Schechterle – this night is to celebrate the hero’s journey.

From a life-changing accident, through a grueling recovery, to healing through giving back, what we call “the Ripple Effect,” the heroes we celebrate have turned pain into promise, grief into inspiration and tragedy into hope.

Our patient heroes also shine a light on the heroic first responders, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, from occupational therapists to pharmacists, to medical technicians - and many more, whose encouragement, compassionate care and medical expertise make miracles (like tonight’s story) possible. Stephanie and Christian Nielson’s story of hope, inspiration and everyday joy has inspired millions around the world.

We are especially honored to share their “behind the scenes” journey and introduce you to just a few of the medical heroes on their team at the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health.

You’ll meet Deb Pope and Christi Morris, physical and occupational therapists who encouraged the first steps on the Nielsons’ journey back home. You’ll also hear how Stephanie and Christian’s faith, love and family inspired and encouraged them too.

Dr. Kevin Foster and Dr. Sal Lettieri will share their memories of treating the Nielsons more than 13 years ago, and pay tribute to their colleague and dear friend, the late Dr. Dan Caruso.

Finally, thank you for your valuable time and support, as we work to complete a world-class, state-of-the-art new Arizona Burn Center facility at Valleywise Health. The one-of-a-kind 75,000 square-foot facility is designed for patient-centered burn survivorship care to serve the entire Southwestern region for generations to come.

about the night Valleywise Health Foundation’s Legacy Circle Night of Heroes launched in April 2017 to honor patient heroes whose recovery from life-changing injuries inspired a ripple effect of giving back to others.

Envisioned by Valleywise Health Board Chairman Mark Dewane in 2017, the unique “experiential event” would allow Valleywise Health supporters an opportunity to invite friends, community leaders and prospective donors to a one-of-a kind evening to learn more about the critical work of the Valley’s public teaching health system. Three theater-quality films would share the hero’s journey. 1. The Accident 2. The Recovery and 3. The Ripple Effect, followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A session with longtime Phoenix media personality, Karie Dozer.

The inaugural Night of Heroes honoree was retired Phoenix police officer and nationally known speaker, Jason Schechterle, and the heroic first responders and medical team involved in his lifesaving care at the Arizona Burn Center. Subsequent events honored retired Navy Special Forces parachute rigger Tim Schlappi, and flight paramedic turned emergency nurse, Derek Boehm, RN and the Valleywise Health trauma and emergency experts who saved their lives.

On April 23, 2020, Valleywise Health Foundation made history with its first live broadcast event featuring the miraculous story of 11-year-old burn survivor Isabella McCune. Thanks to generous donors and a pivot to virtual events, Night of Heroes reached thousands, in lieu of reaching 300 seats at the in-person event from years past.

Our 2021 Night of Heroes celebrates the courageous story of Stephanie and Christian Nielson and the medical heroes who saved their lives after a tragic plane crash in 2008.

Stephanie & Christian Nielson In 2004, young mom Stephanie Nielson became one of the first “mommy bloggers” when she started an online journal about the gifts of motherhood, traveling with children and creating a family home.

Over the next four years, thousands of followers shared in the couple’s joy as their family grew.

Their lives changed forever on August 16, 2008, when Stephanie and Christian’s small plane crashed and exploded on impact in the Arizona desert. Over the next four months, their lives and future were in the hands of medical experts at the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health.

Stephanie’s New York Times best-selling memoir, “Heaven Is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph, and Everyday Joy” honors many of her heroes in the Arizona Burn Center.

Featured on NBC’s Today Show, ABC News, The Oprah Winfrey Network and many more – and followed by supporters around the country and world – hear their heroic story of faith, hope and family firsthand on April 29 – as the Nielsons share their gratitude for the compassionate care by the first responders and medical heroes who saved their lives.

Currently celebrating over 16 years in the auction business, and having raised over $500 million dollars for charity, Letitia Frye h as truly earned her title as America’s foremost “Auctiontainer.”

Letitia is able to effortlessly combine her expertise in entertainment, fashion, fundraising and her humanitarian efforts to help so many i n need, and make a difference in peoples’ lives.

After a devastating accident in which she was struck by a car while running, leading to a Traumatic Brain Injury, combined with the sudden death of the father of her children, Letitia decided to broaden her span beyond auctions in order to help more people. Ms. Frye is now a motivational speaker and published author of her book NO RESERVE, and believes that her passion for others is the secret to success in work and life.

Letitia Frye has spent many years working with orphans in Haiti, Doctors in Hospice, spending time with hospital researchers, rescuing abused and abandoned animals, volunteering at various camps for children, and granting wishes through Make A Wish. She believes the only way to understand the mission of a charity or non-profit is to personally provide time and effort to help those in need.

Letitia received the prestigious Babe Caylor Leadership Award in 2017 for her work with LGBTQ youth. Her most humbling honors have come with having two of the awards she received, that are now named after her, The 1N10 Letitia Frye Excellence in Fundraising Award, and the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital Letitia Frye Humanitarian Award.

Although she works all over the United States and outside of the country, Letitia calls Scottsdale her home. Letitia has two beautiful children, whom she accounts for helping her to tackle every obstacle that has come in front of her, and for her continued success in all fields of her career.

Dr. Salvatore Lettieri Dr. Salvatore Lettieri is the Chair Emeritus of Plastic Surgery at Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. As a Mayo Clinic Faculty member, he serves this role as a joint venture between the Mayo Clinic and Valleywise Health Medical Center. In this role, he provides education for the Plastic Surgery Residents from Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona as well as the ENT Residents from Mayo Clinic Arizona. This allows Dr. Lettieri to concentrate on facial trauma and extremity salvage in addition to burn reconstruction and skull base surgery which provides a complementary experience for the residents.

Dr. Lettieri is a graduate of the Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. This was followed by General Surgery and Plastic Surgery Residencies at the Mayo Clinic Rochester and Craniofacial and Microsurgery Fellowships at Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He currently serves on the AONA Education Board and has been actively involved in courses both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Kevin N. Foster Dr. Kevin Foster is board certified by The American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

He did his training at the University of Wisconsin followed by a fellowship in Burn, at The University of Washington in Seattle. He currently holds a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine as a Clinical Professor of Surgery. He serves as the Chief of Burn Services at The Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix and is the Director of Surgical Research at Valleywise Health.

Dr. Foster is actively involved in all aspects of innovative burn research and clinical studies and continually lectures to the specialized burn population throughout the United States and abroad.

He served as the Program Director for the Department of Surgery’s General Surgery Residency Training Program for 8 years and continues mentoring the students and residents at Valleywise Health.

A Tribute to

Dr. Dan Caruso 1 9 6 3 -2 0 1 7

On Friday, August 25, 2017, Dr. Daniel Caruso lost a determined, fourteen-month battle with cancer. He was 53. As one of the co-founders of the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health Systems), he cared for hundreds of patients, including Stephanie and Christian Nielson.

Dr. Caruso graduated from the MIHS surgical residency program in 1998 and was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at District Medical Group from 2006 until his death. He was devoted and fiercely loyal to his Department, and was an outstanding critical care/burn surgeon and passionate surgical educator. Dr. Caruso was a fervent advocate of the residents he helped mentor to their promise and potential. His dedication to the surgical training of the next generation will continue to pay forward as part of his legacy, through the exceptional alumni of the Valleywise Health surgical residency program. He always challenged his residents to look at the medical care they provide through the eyes of a patient.

Honoring strong survivors Christin Lipinski The Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health was my home for two months as I recovered from necrotizing fasciitis in 2018. Thirty percent of my s oft tissue was destroyed.

I received wound care treatments and grafting.

D r. Foster also requested that the FDA allow the use of the experimental skin spray, ReCell, due to the amount of skin needed for my grafts. I went home after three months total in the hospital. The Burn Clinic continued t o care for me in my recovery, supporting me as I strived to return to my former life as a teacher and mother.

I am forever grateful to the Arizona Burn Center for their care towards me and my family through my recovery and since then. Everyone at the Arizona Burn Center (doctors, therapists, nurses, etc.) care for each and every person. The passion the medical staff has is astounding! I am grateful t o now be a part of that family.

Lilly and JD McCune are the very proud parents of 17-year-old Zachary and 11-year-old Isabella. On March 17, 2018, they were preparing for a neighborhood St. Patrick’s Day party. It would include a cookout, kids games, bikes, skateboards, and chatting around the fire. With corned beef and cabbage cooking in the house and burgers on the grill, Lilly headed outside to help.
