As you hear the stories of women and families escaping the unthinkable – and meet Dr. Crista Johnson-Agbakwu, Jeanne Nizigiyimana and Daisy, a Cultural Health Navigator in the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic, we think you will understand why we are so passionate about the work of Valleywise Health.

The powerful stories in Melinda Gates’ New York Times best-seller, “The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World,” hit close to home. In fact, they are just like the stories of families in the Valley who have traveled brave and uncertain journeys, and want nothing more than safety and a future without constant fear and violence for their children.

At Valleywise Health, they find compassion, empathy and care from people who speak their language – and safe place to go for help, without shame. They find doctors and nurses who understand the cultural and gender “norms” they’ve experienced, and who can help them navigate the complex healthcare system in the United States. Things we take for granted, from a well-woman check to information on family planning, to a pediatrician visit for their child, Valleywise Health is there… globally minded and culturally sensitive.

Imagine a mother fleeing a war-torn country – with her frightened children – and nothing but the clothes on their backs. Now, imagine working to build a better life for your children in a new city that’s a sea of strange faces, new customs and in a language that’s foreign from your own.

Our Refugee Health Services provide a caring community for these families, helping them navigate the often overwhelming and confusing American healthcare system.

Cultural Health Navigators from refugee communities serve as interpreters and educators for families from 61 different countries. In addition to health services, specialty education courses on topics like breast cancer awareness and prevention, physical activity and nutrition, reproductive health education and childbirth and newborn care are hosted each month.

Dr. Crista JohnsonAgbakwu

Refugee Health Services Valleywise Health

Dr. Crista Johnson-Agbakwu, is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System), where she is the Founding Director of the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic (RWHC). She is also a Clinical Research Affiliate of the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC) at Arizona State University where she is Director of the Office of Refugee Health, and a Research Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions at Arizona State University.

She received her undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University, medical degree from the Weill Cornell Medicine, and completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the George Washington University Medical Center. She subsequently completed a fellowship in Female Sexual Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles and then became a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan where she obtained her Masters in Health and Health Care Research examining disparities in reproductive health care among refugees/immigrants through mixed-method Community-Based Participatory Research.

Her current research focuses on investigating strategies to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes for newly-arrived refugee women, particularly those who have undergone Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) as well as Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV); with the aim of improving health care access and utilization, sexual and reproductive health education, counseling, community engagement, as well as enhance health care provider cultural competency.

She has led a federally funded effort through the Office on Women’s Health to improve the provision of health care services, community engagement and provider cultural competency on FGC across the state of Arizona. She has also provided consultative expertise to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on refugee women’s health and FGM/C.

Daisy Taknan

Daisy Taknan, MBA, BSc, is from Myanmar formerly known as Burma.

She is a Cultural Health Navigator at the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic (RWHC). Prior to coming to the U.S., Daisy served at the international level working at the World Vision in Myanmar and within the banking and technology sectors.

Jeanne F. Nizigiyimana, MSW, MA is the co-founder and Program Manager of the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic (RWHC) at Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ where she also chairs the Refugee Women’s Health Community Advisory Coalition (RWHCAC). Originally from Burundi, her refugee journey and resilience inspire a passionate work that impacts the lives of underserved women globally. Her work involves the design and coordination of culturally-grounded health literacy projects, community partner for research activities that are co-designed and co-implemented by an interdisciplinary, multicultural staff, volunteers and community members. In this capacity, she launched a robust and innovative team of Cultural Health Navigators, nationally recognized and a first of its kind in Arizona to ensure a seamless transition for refugees in navigating the health care system.

Since coming to Phoenix in 2007, Daisy has been very involved with the Burmese community in Phoenix and has a lead position within their church activities, helping with interpretation and leading women’s health education efforts. Prior to joining the RWHC, Daisy served as a Research Assistant for the Anasazi Foundation and as an Internal Medical Liaison Coordinator at the Arizona Medical Clinic. She is passionate about helping the Burmese community receive the best care possible.

Ms. Nizigiyimana serves on several boards, earned various awards including the ASU-SIRC Community Leadership Award in Eliminating Health Disparities with the most recent awards being Outstanding Woman in Business in 2020 and Non-Physician Finalist for Health Care Heroes in 2019 by the Phoenix Business Journal.

Lia Christiansen

Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer

Lia Christiansen joined Valleywise Health as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) in February 2021.

She most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer for Acute Care for Minnesota Health Fairview in Minneapolis.

As CAO, Christiansen’s responsibilities include overseeing support departments and services, including HR, IT, Marketing/Communications, Environmental and Facilities services, planning, and Care Reimagined Construction and Integrated Project Management Office activities. She will work with hospital leaders, members of the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors, District Medical Group physicians and the community to advance the health care system’s ever increasing levels of service to patients and the community.

During her time as COO at M Health Fairview, Christiansen had responsibility for operations in five acute care hospitals with 796 licensed beds, $670 million in net operating revenue, 36,500 inpatient admissions and 4,500 employees. Prior to her role with M Health Fairview, she worked in the HealthEast Care system in St. Paul, Minnesota serving as Vice President for Hospital Operations overseeing three hospitals and as the Vice President of Shared Operations leading ancillary and support departments for the system. HealthEast merged with M Health Fairview in 2017.

Christiansen earned a bachelor’s degree in English and communications from Concordia College, Moorehead, MN, and a master’s degree in business, communications from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul. She was a COO fellow in the Health Management Academy in 2019-2020, is Lean Bronze certified and has training in FEMA incident command. She was named by the Minnesota/St. Paul Business Journal as one of the 25 Women to Watch and was recognized by Minnesota Physician Magazine as an Exceptional Administrator.

Lia and her husband have three young adult children.

I am excited to work with hospital leaders, physicians, employees, volunteers and community members to find new ways we can serve our region and positively impact the lives of people. It’s an exciting time in the growth of Valleywise Health.”

Karie Dozer emcees and hosts local business presentations and community events, creates presentations and coaches professionals in their delivery, and provides the voice talent for commercial and non-broadcast audio and video productions.

Karie has worked in and around Phoenix media for more than 20 years. Karie has hosted a number of different weekday and weekend radio shows at the radio station that gave her her first job out of college, KTAR, now 92.3 FM Phoenix.

Most recently, she co-hosted a midday talk show covering local and national news and events. Karie loves local radio because of its immediate and intimate connection to listeners, and its familiar place in their daily lives.

Mari Lederman Mari Lederman is a Vice President and co-leader of JLL’s Healthcare Solutions Group in Phoenix. In addition to her professional experience, Mari has spent more than 15 years giving of her personal time to a variety of philanthropic organizations in the Valley.

She has held numerous chairmanships, leadership and board positions with organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Florence Crittenton, Las Palomas, The American Cancer Society and Arizona Children’s Association.

Danielle Werstler Danielle Werstler has spent more than 25 years volunteering her time to philanthropic organizations throughout the Valley. She has chaired numerous events, such as the Childhelp Wings Fashion Show Luncheon and the JDRF Ball.

Danielle has also served on several committees for organizations such as Teach for America, the Arizona Science Center and notMYkid.
