Chapter 2: ΜΕΓΑΛΟΙ ΕΞΕΡΕΥΝΗΤΕΣ - GREAT EXPLORERS D1, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF PENTALOFOS ΧΡΙΣΤΟΦΟΡΟΣ ΚΟΛΟΜΒΟΣ Αρετή Σούση-Πέτρος Μενεξές- Άννα Μαρία Σκέμπη- Θησέας Μενεξές Ο Χριστόφορος Κολόμβος γεννήθηκε μεταξύ 26 Αυγούστου και 31 Οκτωβρίου 1451 στη Δημοκρατία της Γένοβας και πέθανε 19 ή 20 Μαΐου του 1506.

Ο Χριστόφορος Κολόμβος ήταν Ιταλός εξερευνητής-θαλασσοπόρος, που θεωρείται ο άνθρωπος που ανακάλυψε την Αμερική, αλλά υπάρχουν στοιχεία ότι πριν εκατοντάδες χρόνια την είχαν ανακαλύψει οι Vikings, οι Κινέζοι και οι Φοίνικες. Έχοντας βεβαιότητα ότι η Γη είναι σφαιρική, ο Κολόμβος άρχισε να μελετάει πώς μπορεί να φτάσει στην Άπω Ανατολή ακολουθώντας πορεία προς τα Δυτικά. Το πρώτο ταξίδι του Κολόμβου ξεκίνησε στις 3 Αυγούστου του 1492. Το ταξίδι του κράτησε 2,5 περίπου μήνες, έκανε άλλα 3 ταξίδια, αλλά προς το τέλος της ζωής του απομονώθηκε.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Areti Sousi - Peter Menexes - Anna Maria Skempi- Theseus Menexes

Christopher Columbus was born on the 2nd of November 1451 in the Republic of Genoa and died 19th or 20 May, 1506.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer-navigator, who is considered the man who discovered America, but there is evidence that hundreds of years ago America was discovered by the Vikings, the Chinese and the Phoenicians. Having confidence that the Earth is spherical, Columbus began to study how to reach the Far East by following a path to the west.

The first trip of Columbus was launched on the 3rd of August 1492. The journey lasted about 2.5 months, he made three other trips, but towards the end of his life he was isolated.

ΒΑΣΚΟ ΝΤΑ ΓΚΑΜΑ Πέτρος Μενεξές-Θησέας Μενεξές Ο Βάσκο ντα Γκάμα γεννήθηκε 3 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1469 στις Σίνες πόλη της Πορτογαλίας και πέθανε 23 Δεκεμβρίου του 1524.

Ήταν θαλασσοπόρος κι ο πρώτος που έκανε τον γύρο της Αφρικής μέσω θαλάσσης, ενώνοντας την Ευρώπη με τις Ινδίες και κάνοντας νέες εμπορικές σχέσεις με καινούριες χώρες. Το 1497 ξεκίνησε από τη Λισσαβόνα (Πορτογαλία) με 4 πλοία. Χρησιμοποιώντας τις γνώσεις ενός Αφρικανού πλοηγού, έφτασε στις Ινδίες σε περισσότερο από έναν μήνα, κάνοντας μια απόσταση 2.100 ναυτικών μιλίων. Ο στόλος του ήταν τα πρώτα Ευρωπαϊκά πλοία που ταξίδεψαν στις Ινδίες. Ο Βάσκο ντα Γκάμα πραγματοποίησε δύο ακόμα αποστολές στις Ινδίες: το 1502 και το 1524. Πέθανε από ελονοσία κατά τη διάρκεια της τελευταίας του αποστολής στην πόλη Κότσιν της Ινδίας. Ο Βάσκο ντα Γκάμα έχει ξεχωριστή θέση στους Πορτογάλους θαλασσοπόρους, γιατί άνοιξε νέους δρόμους για το εμπόριο με την Ανατολή για τους Πορτογάλους.

VASCO DA GAMA Peter Menexes – Theseus Menexes

The Vasco da Gama was born 3 September 1469 in the town of Sines in Portugal, and died 23 December 1524. He was a navigator and the first to make a tour of Africa by sea, uniting Europe to India and making new business relations with new countries.

In 1497 he started his trip from Lisbon (Portugal) with 4 ships. Using the knowledge of an African navigator, he arrived in Indi a in more than a month, covering a distance of 2.100 nautical miles.

His armadas were the first European ships that traveled to India. Vasco da Gama carried two more expeditions to India: in 1502 and 1524. He died of malaria during his last expedition in the city of Cochin, India.

Vasco da Gama has a special place in Portuguese navigators; he opened new routes for trade with the East for Portugal.

ΦΕΡΔΙΝΑΝΔΟΣ ΜΑΓΓΕΛΑΝΟΣ Άννα-Μαρία Σκέμπη, Αρετή Σούση Ο Φερδινάνδος Μαγγελάνος γεννήθηκε το 17 Οκτωβρίου 1480 στη Σαμπρόσα της Πορτογαλίας και πέθανε 7 Μαΐου 1521. Ο Πορτογάλος θαλασσοπόρος ήταν αρχηγός της πρώτης αποστολής που μπόρεσε να κάνει το γύρο της Γης. Στο διάστημα 1519-1522 μπόρεσε να πείσει το βασιλιά Κάρολο Α’ να οργανώσει μια ναυτική αποστολή προς τα Νησιά των Μπαχαρικών, στις σημερινές Μολούκες νήσους στην Ινδονησία. Όμως η αποστολή αυτή δεν θα ακολουθούσε τη μέχρι τότε γνωστή πορεία μέσω Ινδικού Ωκεανού, αλλά θα περνούσε από τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό, θα έφτανε στις ακτές της Νότιας Αμερικής και θα έψαχνε τον άγνωστο ακόμα τότε θαλάσσιο δρόμο που ένωνε τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό με τον Ειρηνικό. Ξεκίνησε το 1519 από το λιμάνι Σανλούκαρ ντε Μπαραμέδα. Ο Μαγγελάνος ανακάλυψε το πέρασμα προς τον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό μέσα από τον Πορθμό στο άκρο της Νότιας Αμερικής, που πήρε το όνομά του (Στενά του Μαγγελάνου). Ο Μαγγελάνος δεν πρόλαβε να ολοκληρώσει το ταξίδι του. Σκοτώθηκε σε μια μάχη με ιθαγενείς στο νησί Μακτάν των Φιλιππίνων. Από τα 5 πλοία και τα 250 άομα που άρχισαν μαζί με τον Μαγγελάνο το ταξίδι, γύρισε πίσω μόνο ένα πλοίο που είχε 18 άντρες. Κατάφεραν μετά από μεγάλο ταξίδι να γυρίσουν στην Ισπανία το 1522, τελειώνοντας τον γύρο της Γης.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN Anna-Maria Skempi, Areti Soussi

Ferdinand Magellan was born October 17, 1480 in Samprosa Portugal and died May 7, 1521. The Portuguese explorer-navigator was the captain of the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

In the period 1519-1522, he convinced King Charles I to organize a naval expedition to the Spice Islands, in today Moluccas Islands in Indonesia. But this expedition did not follow the previously known route through the Indian Ocean, but would pass from the Atlantic Ocean, would reach the coasts of South America and was looking for the unknown – up until then - sea route connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. It was launched in 1519 from the port Sanlúcar de Barameda.

Magellan discovered the passage into the Pacific Ocean through the Strait at the tip of South America, which was named after him (Strait of Magellan).

Magellan did not live to complete his journey. He was killed in a fight with natives on the island of Mactan in the Philippines. Of the five ships and 250 men that began with Magellan this expedition trip, only one ship and 18 men came back. They succeeded after a long journey to return to Spain in 1522, completing the circumnavigation of the Earth.

ΘΟΡ ΧΕΪΕΡΝΤΑΛ Άννα Μαρία Σκέμπη- Θησέας Μενεξές Γεννήθηκε 6 Οκτωβρίου του 1914 στο Λαρβίκ, Νορβηγία και πέθανε στις 18 Απριλίου 2002. Ο Θορ Χέιερνταλ όταν ήταν μικρός έδειχνε ενδιαφέρον για τη ζωολογία, γι’ αυτό το λόγο έκανε ένα μικρό μουσείο στο σπίτι του. Αφού τελείωσε το Λύκειο, αποφάσισε να σπουδάσει ζωολογία και γεωγραφία στο πανεπιστήμιο του Όσλο. Ο Χέιερνταλ υποστήριζε ότι οι Πολυνήσιοι κατάγονται από την αρχαία φυλή Ίνκας, επειδή όμως οι άλλοι επιστήμονες δεν τον πίστευαν, αποφάσισε να φτιάξει μια σχεδία για να κάνει το ταξίδι από το Περού στην Πολυνησία ο ίδιος. Αποφάσισε να φτιάξει μια σχεδία 10μ. από κορμούς του δέντρου μπάλσα, ίδια με αυτά που είχαν οι αρχαίοι λαοί, για να πραγματοποιήσει το ταξίδι. Τον βοήθησε ο Γκέρμαν Βαττσίνγκερ και ο φίλος του Έρικ Χεσσελμπεργκ. Όταν μετά από πολλές δυσκολίες φτιάχτηκε η σχεδία, ονομάστηκε Κον-Τίκι, το όνομα του θεού Ήλιου των Ίνκας. Μετά από 3 μήνες περίπου, κατάφερε να φτάσει. Ο Θορ Χέιερνταλ έκανε σπουδαίες εξερευνήσει στις Μαλβίδες, στα Γκαλαπάγκος και στο νησί του Πάσχα.

THOR HEYERDAHL Anna Maria Skempi & Theseus Menexes He was born October 6, 1914 in Larvik, Norway, and died on April 18, 2002.

Thor Heyerdahl as a child seemed interested in zoology, so he created a small museum in his house. After he finished high school, he decided to study zoology and geography at the University of Oslo.

Heyerdahl claimed that the Polynesians originated from the ancient Inca, but because other scientists did not accept this theory, he decided to build a raft to make the journey from Peru to Polynesia himself. He decided to build 10 meters - long raft from balsa tree and other native materials to make the journey. Gkerman Vattsingker and his friend Eric Chesselmpergk helped him.

When, after many difficulties, he built the raft, he named the expedition “Kon-Tiki”, after the name of the God Sun of the Incas.

After about three months at sea, he managed to finish his journey.

Thor Heyerdahl made great explorations in Maldives, the Galapagos and Easter Island.

ΖΑΚ – ΥΒ ΚΟΥΣΤΩ Αρετή Σούση-Πέτρος Μενεξές Ο Ζακ-Υβ Κουστώ γεννήθηκε 11 Ιουνίου 1910, κοντά στο Μπορντώ. Σπούδασε στη Ναυτική Ακαδημία της Βρέστης, που είναι στη Γαλλική Βρετάνη. Πέθανε στις 25 Ιουνίου του 1997. Η δουλειά του ήταν ωκεανογράφος, εξερευνητής, συγγραφέας, φωτογράφος και κινηματογραφιστής.

Εκτός από εξερευνητής θαλασσών, έφτιαχνε και κατασκευές για τη δουλειά του. Μόνος του το 1936 κατασκεύασε την πρώτη μάσκα καταδύσεων που υπήρξε ποτέ, που εμπνεύστηκε από τους αλιείς μαργαριταριών. Με τη μάσκα του ο Κουστώ έκανε πολλές καταδύσεις και εξερευνήσεις. Δεν ήθελε να φύγει από τη θάλασσα κι έτσι καταπιάστηκε με την κατασκευή στολής που θα κρατούσε ζεστό το σώμα του. Επίσης κατασκεύασε μια συσκευή που έδινε αέρα. Ταυτόχρονα κατασκεύασε μια αδιάβροχη θήκη για την κάμερα, για να μπορεί να κινηματογραφήσει όσα βλέπει. Με τη βοήθεια του μηχανικού Εμίλ Γκανιάν το 1943 μπόρεσε να ολοκληρώσει την πρώτη στολή αυτόνομης κατάδυσης. Επίσης έκανε πολλές εξερευνήσεις στο Αιγαίο, όπου ανακάλυψε το μηχανισμό των Αντικυθήρων. Ο Ζακ-Υβ Κουστώ, με την «Καλυψώ», το σκάφος του, γύρισε όλες τις θάλασσες του πλανήτη.

JACQUES-YVES COUSTEAU, by Areti Soussi & Petros Menexes Jacques Yves Cousteau was born June 11, 1910, near Bordeaux. He studied at the Naval Academy in Brest, which is in French Brittany. He died on 25 June 1997. He was an oceanographer, explorer, author, photographer and filmmaker.

Besides exploring seas, he constructed equipment for his work. In 1936 he built the first diving mask inspired by pearl-fishermen.

With his mask Cousteau made numerous dives and explorations. He did not want to leave the sea and so developed a suit that would keep his body warm. He also built a device that provided air. At the same time he built a waterproof case to the camera, in order to film what he sees under the water. With the help of the engineer Emil Gagnan 1943 he was able to complete the first diving suit and Aqua-Lung prototypes. He aslo made several explorations in the Aegean Sea, where he discovered the Antikythera mechanism. Jacques Cousteau with "Calypso", his boat, explored all the seas of the planet.

Deserts

What is a desert?

• The desert is a land of extremes: extreme heat and extreme dryness; sudden flash floods and cold nights. Because deserts are such a difficult places to live in they often have names like "Death Valley," "The empty quarter," and "The place from where there is no return."

How dry is a desert?

• Deserts are usually very, very dry. Even the wettest deserts get less than ten inches of rain a year.

• In most places, rain falls steadily throughout the year. But in the desert, there may be only a few periods of rains per year with a lot of time between rains. When it does rain, there may be quite a downpour! After the rain, desert flower bloom

Is it always hot in a desert? •

Everyone knows that during the day many deserts are hot, very hot.

Temperatures can get as high as 100 degrees fahrenheit are not uncommon. Yet at night, the same deserts can have temperatures fall into the 40s or 50s? With no clouds or plant life to keep the heat in, it begins to cool as soon as the sun goes down.

Which animals live in the desert?

Animals in the desert must survive the intense heat, searing sun, and lack of water. Animals that live in the hot desert have many adaptations. Some animals never drink, but get their water from seeds (some can contain up to 50% water) and plants.

Many animals are nocturnal, sleeping during the hot day and only coming out at night to eat and hunt. Some animals rarely spend any time above ground.

Can any plants grow in a desert?

Deserts are the home to many living things.

Plants that grow in a desert have to be especially adapted to the dry conditions. They must be able to: collect and store water and reduce water loss.

Desert plants look quite different to plant that grow in other places.

The Sahara covers large parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia, It is s the largest hot desert and third largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.

It is the study of the earth, natural ecosystems, physical features, migration patterns and other ways of humanenvironment interaction.

In the past geographers played an important role in society.

 He was born in Cyrene which is now in Libya in North Africa in 276 B.C.  In his three-volume work Geography he mapped his entire known world, even dividing the Earth into five climate zones.  One his contributions was the concept of latitude and longitude.  He was also the first man to be able to calculate the size of the earth (with a minimal 2% error), the earth’s axial tilt, and possibly even its distance from the sun.

He was born in 64 B.C. In the Greek city of Amisea in the district of Pontus.

His Geography is the only work about the peoples and countries known to both Greeks and Romans during the reign of Augustus (27 B.C.–14 A.D).

He was born in 1859.  His vast work on botanical geography created the groundwork for the biogeography field  He is considered the father of modern geography 

He was born in 1850 and died in 1934.  He was an American geographer, geologist, geomorphologist and meteorologist,  His scientific contribution was the cycle of erosion, which was a model of how rivers create landforms. 

Little Prince meets a geographer before he visits the Earth.

CHAPTER 5: 3RD EXPERIMENTAL PRIMARY SCHOOL OF EVOSMOS

A. ΦΥΤΑ - PLANTS Μπαομπάμπ - Baobabs Τα Μπαομπάμπ είναι τεράστια δέντρα που ζουν χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ευδοκιμούν στην Μαδαγασκάρη, στην Αφρική και στην Αυστραλία. Βaobabs are huge trees which live thousands of years. They thrive in Madagascar, Africa and Australia.

Τριαντάφυλλα - Roses Η τριανταφυλλιά είναι καλλωπιστικό και φυλλοβόλο φυτό. Εκτός τα ευωδιαστά άνθη, παρέχει και αιθέριο αρωματικό λάδι που χρησιμεύει στην παρασκευή αρωμάτων. Επίσης τα πέταλα των τριαντάφυλλων μπορούν να γίνουν και γλυκό.

The rose bush is deciduous and ornamental plant. Apart from the fragrant flowers, it provides essential aromatic oil used in perfume. Also the petals of roses can be made sweet.

Β. ΠΟΥΛΙΑ/ΖΩΑ- BIRDS/ANIMALS Αποδημητικά πουλιά- Migratory Birds Κάθε χρόνο πολλά πουλιά (κύκνοι, αγριόπαπιες, αγριόχηνες, πελαργοί, χελιδόνια, ερωδιοί, πελεκάνοι) μεταναστεύουν από το Νότο προς το Βορρά την άνοιξη και το αντίθετο το φθινόπωρο. Αυτά είναι τα αποδημητικά πουλιά.

Every year many birds (swans, wild ducks, wild geese, storks, swallows, herons, pelicans) immigrate from South to North in spring and the opposite in Autumn.

Φίδια - Snakes

Τα φίδια είναι ερπετά. Τρέφονται με μικρά ζώα, πουλιά, αυγά ή έντομα. Τα μεγαλύτερα φίδια (π.χ. ο πύθωνας) τρέφονται με μεγαλύτερα ζώα. Υπάρχουν πολλά είδη φιδιών και λίγα μόνο είναι δηλητηριώδη και επικίνδυνα για τον άνθρωπο.

Snakes are reptiles. They feed on dead animals, birds, eggs or insects while larger snakes (as the python) fed with larger animals. There are many species of snakes and a few are poisonous and dangerous to humans

Πρόβατο- Sheep

Το οικόσιτο πρόβατο, είναι ένα τετράποδο ζώο που πιθανότατα κατάγεται από τα άγρια πρόβατα της Νότιας και Νοτιοδυτικής Ασίας. Έχουν μέτριο σώμα που καλύπτεται από πυκνό τρίχωμα, απαλό στην αφή και τρέφονται με νωπά χόρτα, τα οποία καταπίνουν σχεδόν αμάσητα.

The domestic sheep is a four-leg animal that probably originated from wild sheep of South and Southwest Asia. They have medium body covered by dense soft coat and fed with fresh grass, which they swallow it without chewing.

Αλεπού - Fox Η αλεπού είναι ανώτερο σαρκοφάγο θηλαστικό με πυκνό τρίχωμα και φουντωτή ουρά. Τα πόδια της είναι κοντά και λεπτά. Η ουρά της είναι αρκετά μεγάλη συγκριτικά με το σώμα της (φτάνει σε μήκος έως και τα 60 εκ.) και χρησιμεύει και σαν μέσο ισορροπίας.

The fox is a superior carnivorous mammal with thick fur and a bushy tail. Its legs are short and thin. Its tail is quite long compared to the body (it reaches a length up to 60 cm.) and serves as a balance means.
