Time: An Average Day in the life of Charlie Brown

Synopsis:

Act I captures an average day in the life of Charlie Brown, showcasing moments from Valentine's Day to baseball season. Amidst the interplay with friends, both human and non-human, the narrative follows Charlie Brown's reflections, including a song praising him. Lucy's attempts at love and Linus's attachment to his blanket add layers to the story. The act concludes with Valentine's Day woes and a visit to Lucy's psychiatry booth.

In Act II, Snoopy imagines himself as a World War I flying ace. The day unfolds with a chaotic baseball game, Lucy's selfreflection, and a misbegotten song rehearsal. The group's evening reflections on happiness lead to an unusual compliment from Lucy to Charlie Brown. Despite not resembling Peanuts characters, the cast, not actually six years old, conveys the play's charm through the candidness of childhood friendships.

THE LUISE SMELA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Luise Smela was a proud member of the Marian facultyandstafffromthefallof1979tothespring of 2008. During her many years at the school, she was an incredibly impactful teacher and the beloved Producer/Director of the Marian Rice Players (MRP), the joint drama department between Marian High School and Brother Rice HighSchool.

Lu approached education with an outward focus. She created a forum for her students to embrace altruism with the philosophy that loving others first must be woven into the fabric of right living. That unshakeable foundation for life impacted all those who participated in the hundreds of performances she directed. She taught her students that no job in the theater was more important than another, just as for her, no student was more important than another. Luise Smela made a difference and was so proud of her many students who became successful professionals in the theatre and entertainment world.

Jennifer Suan

2024-2025 Recipient

Jen plans to study in New York in either journalism or communications with hopes of workinginthefashionindustry.

On why receiving this scholarship was important to her: “It was meaningful to be awarded for something I’m passionate about- the performing arts. It further highlighted the importance of the arts both in my life and the lives of others who will receivethisinthefuture.”
