Welcome to Our Celebration of Languages and Cultures!
On May 21, we join people around the world to celebrate the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. It's a special time to recognize the richness of our world’s cultures and the importance of understanding each other.
In 3rd grade, we honored this day by exploring our own language stories. Each student interviewed a family member to learn more about the languages spoken in their homes past and present. From these conversations, they created their very own Language Autobiographies
In this booklet, you’ll find the interview questions (in six different languages!) and the incredible stories our students wrote. Through these pages, we celebrate family heritage, memory, migration, and the words that shape our lives.
We hope this project inspires you to ask questions, share stories, and feel proud of your cultural roots. Let’s continue learning from one another with curiosity, kindness, and respect.

Project Instructions
To write their Language Autobiography, students followed these steps:
1. Interview a family member (a parent, grandparent, or another relative).
2. Ask about the languages spoken in their family, especially by grandparents or greatgrandparents.
3. Use the interview questions found on the next page they’re available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Chinese, and Norwegian!
4. Take notes or draw pictures to capture the stories.
5. Write a final version that includes:
o My story with languages
o My family’s story
o Something I want to remember
o A creative title!
6. Bring it to school by May 20, and celebrate with the class on May 21!
