Message from Editor in Chief

Welcome to The IFMSAian–the first magazine in Medical University of Lublin and first magazine created by English Division of IFMSA-Poland. Our work as ED Team started a year ago, when few enthusiasts decided to dedicate their free time in order to create something different, something special. To share knowledge, to meet different cultures, to learn about each other. That is how we started- one workshop, one project at a time. And the list of our members and IFMSA friends was growing monthly. Then, the greatest event we organized, Culture Night 2014, was a great challenge for our Team. After a month of crazy rehearsals, sleepless hours, searching for the performers, encouraging people to join this fantastic event, we managed to present to our community 3 hours of great performance, and we could support a great cause- organization Doctors without Borders – providers of medical help in countries where other human rights are being violated. This is also a next step in our development as the organization – The IFMSAian is the voice of our members, who travel, gain knowledge, and share experience. We want to spread our ideas to you, our readers – therefore we want to encourage you to spend a lovely afternoon and read this first issue of ours. We promise you it will be worth reading! In this issue you will find out about our exchanges in Turkey, Taiwan, Surgery Summer School in Romania, our projects: International Hospital, Meeting the Youngsters, Triathlon for Marie Curie Cancer Care. I had relaxing trips to the most fascinating tourists attraction in Romania: Castle of Dracula, Bucegi Mountains, Peles Castle, the Danube Delta and the Black Sea. Romania's surgical education focus on classical operation, I think it's very important nowadays because lots advanced surgical instrument are used but it also means most surgeons forgot or even don't know how to do the operation in classical or traditional way if they don't have access to these advanced surgical instruments. For example, staplers for anastomosis of blood vessels or intestines. When I was in vascular surgery department , there are also 3 doctors from top Romanian military hospital doing further training on classical operation on vascular surgery, such as bypass, vascular grafting and vascular anastomosis. They told me in battle field, classical operation is the 6

The participants were from around the world, for example, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, Hungary, Portugal, Italy, Lithuania and Brazil. We became good friends after spending 2weeks together, we discuss everything we learned from everyday’s courses, difference between countries on medical educations, treatment and types of operation. It’s gorgeous that a group of passionate students who want to be surgeons get together and share ideas, the feeling is so touching! These students spent extra money and their holidays to learn and practice surgical skills and knowledge in order to be more competitive in the near future.

I am so glad I had the chance to participate in such perfect surgical summer school. I really benefit a lot through teaching and also learning. I believe if our school can hold a event like this, that would be very useful and more surgical spirits will be aroused. TING - I HUANG

„Homeland is life itself. As the blood beats in the arteries, like the heart in the chest hits, as the thought in the brain flows, so the homeland lives in us..” The words of Stefan Zeromski most fully reflect the dedication, pride and passion for our English-speaking students of the University who, with undisguised joy desire to bring us closer to the culture and traditions their countries. May 18, 2014 English Division IFMSA-Poland Committee in Lublin had the honor to invite all enthusiasts of multiculturalism to an incredible journey to distant corners of the world - Culture Night 2014. Meeting the youngsters

IFMSA, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations, as the name suggests, brings together medicine students from all around the world. The main tasks of our organization is the promotion of health, prevention, assistance to patients and supporting them. It’s a very good preparation for our future work as doctors. Importantly, IFMSA allows us one more thing - holding a summer practice or scientific exchanges abroad. After whole month spent abroad we become more open to other cultures, and we can look at everyday things from a different point of view. Thanks to the exchange of ideas and experiences with foreigners, we become spiritually and mentally richer. Our organization is a kind of "bridge" connecting different cultures, eliminating barriers and prejudice, teaching tolerance and coexistence with other nations with respect to their own traditions and religious beliefs. More than 3,000 foreigner students study in Lublin, of which more than 1/3 studies at the Medical University.

In addition, our city is very popular among students from “Erasmus” programme. Lublin is no longer the place where we can’t find any people from other countries. But do Lubliners keep up on the changes that occur around them? Despite the presence of so many people from different parts of the world I have an impression that we do not live together but rather "next to" each other. Foreigners have their own educational programmes, they do not study together with the Polish people, they stay in their own groups and have bigger contact with locals only during the visit in the groceries. Writing about this I do not mean that Lubliners are intolerant and isolate foreigners on purpose, nor consider them to be worse because of racial. On the contrary - when a few months ago, as part of the dissemination of knowledge about HIV / AIDS we engaged foreign students to prepare lessons in secondary schools in Lublin, it met with great interest and approval from the teachers and, especially, students. The final questions asked by students have become the fixed point IFMSA Lublin & English Division

of those activities. They included not only the topic of HIV / AIDS but also the country, culture and daily life of a student who ran those classes. It was a unique occasion, because meeting a real Taiwanese girl or Arabic boy is not a common situation and they had a possibility to know things that we cannot read in the Wikipedia or even in the best tour guide. The students were extremely curious about what life is like on the other side of the world, sometimes lessons even lengthen to the break time. Maybe this was the problem - Polish are not prejudiced against other cultures, maybe they are just a little afraid to be the first to take the initiative in dealing with foreign guests, but once the ice was broken, it turned out that they have a great openness and interest to others. Then in our heads came up an idea. After all we – IFMSA members - have goals that we should fulfill, and besides those directly related to the medicine we have those, which I mentioned earlier - the blurring of borders and cultural barriers, creating and cultivating international cooperation. This is how a project called "Meeting the youngsters", which I am pleased to co-ordinate, began. As part of this project there are organized lessons entirely prepared by the English Division students about their country, traditions, culture and what is important and what makes it so special, about their everyday lives.

Besides to the benefits of knowing the aspects connected with different cultures etc. worth mentioning is the fact that the lessons are presented in English, what makes a great opportunity for high school students to improve their language skills. Importantly, foreign students talk about their habits very willingly and passionately. During each of these lessons there is a very nice atmosphere and we can notice a common interest. What is worth mentioning is that each of these classes is a kind of advertisment and promotion of Lublin, which encourages students to stay here to study in college - in a city where everyone can find himself and that is so diverse and open to others. The world constantly moves forward and develops, we must run to keep up with the times. We have to look ahead and notice that times are changing. Whether we like it or not, the world has become a global village, and the borders for the most part are no longer a problem for us. A few decades ago, who would have thought that in the future, in the eastern part of the Poland, in Lublin, in one university will be able to meet people with such diverse backgrounds, studying and living together, with no major problems and tensions. You can shy away from that or you can accept it and do everything to make our common living the best possible. Aleksandra Szczepanek

International Hospital

International Hospital is a Project created for foreigners studying in Poland and for children from the USD hospital. The students have a great opportunity to share the unique culture of their country, increase the awareness of Polish students and children about the global issues regarding their countries as well as influence their future perspectives and knowledge about the World.

translating. After the presentation we make a little quiz for the children to strengthen their knowledge. The second part is a short English workshops; English Division students together with the Polish students help the children to solve crosswords and play games to improve their English skills and maybe even encourage them to learn foreign languages in the future.

The event is divided into two parts. during the first part, the English Division students present the earlier prepared presentation about their homeland, including information about the traditions, events, pictures of their family, friends or house, simply anything different than in Poland, that could interest the kids. The action takes place in the play room of the Nefrology Department, but we encourage kids from all of the departments to join us. The children’s age varies from 3- 15 years old. Sometimes they come with parents who also appreciate the event. There are maximum two presentations at each action held by 1-2 people each. There is always a Polish person

There were already two actions of International Hospital that met the expectations of me as a coordinator: the ED students prepared engulfing, colorful presentations about Thailand and Pakistan basically taking the children to a journey to their country. Regional costumes and music were also involved. For around an hour the ill children didn’t think about their condition or the distance from home and just enjoyed the time spent with us. In my opinion we reached the goal to make the USK kids more curious about the surrounding World and realized the increasing importance of knowing foreign languages. International Hospital workshop

It has been pleasure to be part of Ifmsa. Specially, the international hospital, I am really fond of it. The most heartwarming moment for me is when I see the smile on those innocent faces that are suffering from illness and still manage to smile, it really motivates me.

After so much stress and exams, I found it really luxuriating to attend International Hospital Workshops, for moment I forgot about all my worries. The kids are so eager to know about your culture and country, that’s so incredible. It’s icing on the cake that you got opportunity to present your customs culture to innocent hearts. 16

IFMSA Lublin & English Division

But same times its quite challenging to keep the kids motivated but as a whole it’s full of fun and excitement. You see another aspect of life. I represented a glimpse of my personal life to the small children’s as its quite easier and interesting for them to understand your culture when they see it from a personal approach. I showed them pictures of my family, my friends, our food, and national dress, how our school life is and how weddings are celebrated in our culture. That was quite amazing to see that the kids were seeing and listening very attentively and I was able to see how interested it was for them to

know about all that. Not less are the brilliant cooperators who perfectly convey your each and every word in Polish to the small kind hearts. If you have not been to this workshop before, I strongly recommend you to come and see yourself the sparkling colors of life. Mohammad Suleman Raja

Triathlon for Marie Curie Cancer Care Project

„We should do something together before going back to Taiwan” Chang said, „How about one more triathlon? There is one in London.” This is how everything starts. As Chang, Shih and I scrolling up and down the triathlon official web site, we found out all the regular events are occupied except for charity events, which each participant has to pledge three hundred ponds to sign in. „If we sign up for this, we will have to come up with some good fund raising plans. Do we really want to do this?” We look at each other for split of second, and decided to sign up.

We came up with ideas of having Japanese and Chinese lessons but could not find the proper classroom. After discussion, we decided to talk to IFMSA, „maybe they are kind to land us the office”. As we walked in to the office, Maria was there. After listening to our plan, she was more than happy to assist us with more than we expected. She replied, I am not only landing you the office, you will need the promotion to tell people the events and we have designer to design the posters, you will need students and I know people from other university who are interested in learning the languages. Research in Turkey

There is no doubt that the findings of IFMSA ( International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations ) exchange impact study are extremely significant, this new experience of exchange abroad has a far reaching influence and creates a much more international outlook for the students and increase students job prospects in the future. This was the main reason why I decided to do my research exchange in Turkey, Ankara through SCORE ( The Standing Committee on Research Ex20

IFMSA Lublin & English Division

change ) in Gazi Hospital at the Neurology and Algology departments. I traveled to Ankara in July 2014, There were three students waiting for me at the bus stop, they took me by their car to the students hostel where I met a lot of exchange students from different countries such as Brazil, Slovakia, France, Macedonia and Hungary. The hostel was more than I could expect. Not only were the rooms spacious and comfortable, but the servi-

ce and food were excellent. The ho- hernia, Face pain, trigeminal neuralstel was conveniently located steps a gia (unilateral face pain). way from the hospital and it was modern and free internet.

During the second day after a long day of traveling, one of the Contact person guided to me the hospital and the main department where I met Dr. Babacan who was my supervisor at the Algology department. He asked me during the first day wither I prefer to do Clinical observation or laboratory work, but since I am going to be involved on contacting patients face to face in the future I choose Clinical observation. Dr. Babacan is a very famous Doctor around Turkey and he published a lot of articles concerning development of Tension Type Headache, Migraine, Raynaud phenomenon and Behรงet disease. In the Algology department we mostly provide treatment to Backache, herniated disc, Shingles pain, pain related to amputation, Neck-shoulder-arm pain, cervical discal

The Social program was carried by contact persons not just the medical ones, they organized a lot of weekend trips to different cities in Turkey and daily trips to discover Ankara, including the most popular action the international drink and food party where all of the exchange students prepare some national cousin and beverages from their own countries. During the second day after the hospital we started by touring the remarkable Ethnography Museum and then head over to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations which combines a wealth of artifacts from many empowering empires that have ruthlessly ruled the lands of Ankara over thousands of years. The most impressive showcase in this museum is the display of artifacts from the Ottoman Empire. Of course I did not leave Turkey without going IFMSA Lublin & English Division
