Personal Experience

Nov.2023 - Imperial College London Co- production Workshop

This was a collaboration with medical students to redesign St. Mary’s Hospital emergency department to improve the experience for homeless individuals.

October.2022 - Dec.2022 - Site Diary, Piccadilly Lights Building, Piccadilly Circus,London

Monitored the on-site construction at Piccadilly Circus,London W1D 7ET with four site visits and meetings with site engineers and project manager.

The third-year project is an accumulation of work from semesters one and two. The Iliad is a collection of gardens and an underground resomation Centre, that allows for the celebration of life with the objective of becoming the necropolis of Deptford. The memorial park has been designed as a much- needed green oasis. With a perpetual decline in the world’s population reducing by 2 people per second, we are running out of space to bury our deceased. By using water to decompose the human body, Deptford’s community can allow nature to reabsorb the remaining ashes or form bricks from them to store in the mausoleum instead.

The programme of the Iliad holds three main aspects. The Ceremonial and Resomation Space as well as Accommodation Centre. Through these programmes this green oasis provides the community of Deptford a space were they can celebrate the life of their loved ones and visit them after their passing if they like. These drawings are a combination of hand sketches with my concept model which helped me understand better the spatial design of the project, the rooftopviewtowardsthe mausoleum andground floor plan.

Cementeries are usually seen as dark and unfriendly places so wanted to really study their blueprints and use them for my proposal..

then sketched some of these moments to see what it would be like to walk around these spaces. Here I understood that light and shadow will be my main focus for my proposal and how to create this perhaps by having

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

Rammed earth has been used in construction for thousands of years. I chose this construction method not only because it is much more sustainable compared to other techniques but because I can use the local materials which reduces the energy use and produces little waste. This will be stabilized rammed earth which means I will add a small amount of cement (typically 5–10%)toincreasestrengthand durability.

Construction

Clay from the ground is combined with crushed demolition waste on site, mixed and then poured within formwork.

Formwork

A temporary structure that molds and holds moist soil in place while it’s being compacted to create walls.

A tapered wooden transverse element, also known as a beam or support is used to enhance its structural integrity and provide additional support

Lapping horizontal members

Like timber frames, onto the walls can be a method to strengthen the structure and provide additional support.

Steps

Plywood formwork is filled with layers of moist earth mix, then compacted using pneumatic backfill tamper, nexttheprocessisrepeated.Oncedry, the formwork is removed to reveal the rammed earth wall and additional layers of moist earth are added and compressed.

2.

Structure

Rammed earth construction involves compacting damp soil within a formwork to create solid walls, often with a natural aesthetic

Rammed earth has poor thermal performance, therefore I will add external wall insulations so it is vapor-permeable to allow evaporation.

Reinforced concrete bond

These beams tie the wall together horizontally, enhancing its strength and stability.

This investigation allowed me to really see a controlled flooding as a possibility. My research began with London’s great flood to understand how to manage this water. The benefits for Deptford’s community are immense. I also used Jacob’s Island as a precedent due to its disastrous consequences such as the cholera epidemic and crime rate in the area to ensure the productivity and sustainability of these natural water swimming pools.

Island Collage

The Seven sisters installation focuses on the retelling of Australian Aboriginal stories through different mediums. Each room within the design exhibits something different; cultural songs, the meaning of colour on their paintings, how to make aboriginal jewellery and even symbols significance. I am aiming for my audience to have a better understanding that there are other means of communication but speaking and writing information as their main source of knowledge sharing. Inspired by the Kungkarangkalpa (Seven Sisters), 2013 artwork- located in the British Museum.

The wildlife within the Hackney community garden spaces is endangered and in need of support from it. This Educational & Research Centre incorporates elements of nature as its ‘formal’ approach to create a healthier and more pleasant space for its occupants. The design considers solving problems such as deforestation and the monarch butterfly wildlife numbers in a local scale but thinking of its posible future global impact. While providing numerous benefits such as; including improved mental health considering humans innate connection to nature and making Hackney a more sustainable environment. The design is driven by its non governance ideology and strong structural expression.

Culture can affect everyone. Most often culture bears on how people feel, it can shape our thoughts, our emotions, and our actions. I started writing this essay to investigate why elephant and castle was not successful. I kept exploring threads and found many articles and precedents that I found interesting. However, it was clear to me that I also wanted to express the significance that south American shops have on Immigrants/migrant and second generation born Latinos. Through my dissertation I learnt that architecture and culture go hand in hand, if only we stop and pay attention.

As part of my interests aside of architecture, I enjoy spending time drawing with watercolors build-ings and landscapes. The follow-ing to the right is a collection of my works during my time outside of university and in practice. I love studying different architects, their journey through architecture and drawing their buildings with my graphic style. While I do this, I have been recording myself drawing and made videos for my

instagram. In addition to this I have a keen interest in expressing the essence of architectural practice through teaching. I have done several workshops with children and have througly enjoyed my time with them. As I also enjoy illustrating, on the right are some pages of the book I am illustrating currently.
