November in the Garden Essential tasks for November Making your garden look it's best is one of the essential jobs for November.

Flower Garden Start planting spring bulbs, make certain that you place them at the right depth.

If you have not prepared your border spacing try planting your bulbs in large pots instead. These bulbs can then be planted later to fill in the gaps Tidy borders

By November you will start to notice that your borders are starting to look a little messy.

Any perennials past their best can be cut right down, clearing away remains and adding them to the compost heap.

Plant new hedges Container-grown evergreens and conifers planted now will get a really good start in life, so complete new hedging projects as soon as possible.

Divide perennial The secret is to divvied clumps every second or third year after removing old flowering stems and replant the new sections, watering them in thoroughly.

In The Greenhouse Clean those dirty windows in your greenhouse. Every year you will need to give the out side of the greenhouse a good wash down. General dirt, algae and grime works up on the glazing. This can reduce the amount of light getting through to your loved plants inside.

A Good tip is to use a hose and a stiff brush, slowly spraying and brushing every glazing panel in turn.

THE MARGATE SURFBOAT DISASTER OF 1897, BY MICK TWYMAN Any historic town which has earned its living from the sea has a sad tale to tell of lives lost by its boatmen fighting the elements, and Margate is no exception. At the Nayland Rock is a fine bronze statue of a Lifeboat man in full gear shading his eyes as he gazes at the spot where 9 brave boat men perished when the surfboat ‘FRIEND TO ALL NATIONS’ capsized early one wild, dark winter’s morning whilst putting out on an errand of mercy to a vessel in distress. It is necessary here to point out the Surfboat had nothing to do with the R.N.L.I, but a craft of relatively shallow draught and light build (similar in design to those still in use by the Australian Lifeguards), specially constructed for use over sandbanks, of which there are many out in the Estuary. Owned and maintained on a share system by a co-operative of the town’s Boatmen, the main part of the income was through salvage work of which there was much in the days of sail, but saving life was always the first and foremost priority when duty called.

In the evening of the 28th of November, 1897, a South-Westerly gale blew up, and overnight the wind flew to Nor-Nor-West and increased in strength to Storm Force, with some gusts being recorded of Hurricane Force. As a result of this a tempest struck our shore as huge seas whipped up by those winds crashed directly against our waterfront, causing much damage and the destruction of the marine palace on the 29th. this storm was to continue blowing with varying ferocity but always with that destructive Northern slat for several days, and it was in the early hours of the 2nd of December that tragedy struck.

At around 5:15 a.m., the ‘FRIEND TO ALL NATIONS’ was launched from the Harbour slipway into the inky blackness of that wild night, her mission to assist the London full-rigged ship ‘PERSIAN EMPIRE’, which had been damaged in collision with the West Hartlepool steamship ‘CARLISLE CITY’ the previous evening. As the Surfboat with her crew of 13 men reached the toe of the Nayland Rock to begin their long slog of tacking out into the Estuary in the teeth of the wind, one wave that was described by a survivor as ‘ a monster, a long, curling roller’ struck the boat, filling the sail and knocking her onto her beam ends before capsizing her completely to drift her in to the shore below Beach Houses through the seething cauldron over the rocks.

Oblivious to this drama in the darkness, the National Lifeboat ‘QUIVER launched some 15 minutes later and proceeded on her way to complete a successful service to ‘PERSIAN EMPIRE;. But here at Margate daybreak disclosed a sad scene as the bodies were recovered from the foreshore and it was realised that only 4 men had survived from the 13 who had set out into that storm.

The 9 dead men were the Coxswain, William Cook senior, his son also William, another son Robert Cook, George Ladd, Henry Brockman, John Dike, William Gill, Edward Crunden and Charles Troughton, not himself a boatmen but the Superintendent of the Margate Ambulance Corps who regularly went out in the boat to provide medical assistance when needed. The 4 survivors were Robert Ladd, Henry John Brockman, John James ‘Jacko’ Gilbert and Joseph ‘Joey’ Epps, a veteran Boatmen whose life was saved by him being trapped in an air pocket under the upturned boat.

The grief felt in Margate at the loss of so many loved ones, and just before Christmas too, was total and the whole town, dressed in black , plunged into mourning for their heroes. A national subscription to relieve the plight of the 5 widows and the orphans of the bereaved families was immediately started, and on the 8th of December, in a bitingly cold wind, the funeral procession left The Parade, which was a solid mass of people, to wind it’s way to St. Johns Church, where a service was read over the coffins before they were taken to the Cemetery. The whole length of the route was lined 3 or 4 people deep, and it was estimated that in the procession itself were as many as 3,000 folk. I shall return to this story in further issues.

Cliftonville Residents Association Sunday Afternoon Concerts This years programme of concerts finished on Sunday September 27th 09, featuring two bands.

These were, City of Canterbury Band and The Chillbillies. The afternoon was very well attended as were all the concerts this year. The C.R.A has now begun to formulate next years programme and, the Chairman has started negotiations to secure the funding for them, as it is getting increasingly more difficult to obtain finance. We would very much like feedback on your views of this years programme. This will enable us to present a good case for the continuation of these concerts. Cliftonville Summer Fair.

This years Summer Fair was the best ever! Starting with the Farmers' Market. There were fun rides for the children, great music on the bandstand, and the weather was glorious, as was the day. The Classic Car Rally, organised by Richard Strevens for the C.R.A had a record number of cars on show. There was something for all the family!

This event is getting bigger & better each year and has become a firm favourite with all.

Award-Winning Farmers' Market The dates for the next markets are October 25th, November 29th, and a Special Christmas Market on December 20th 09. from 10 - l pm on the Oval Lawns, Eastern Esplanade.

Grandad has a day trip to France.

Grandad went for a day trip to France and took one of his Grandchildren, Corey and her friend Paige. Of course Nan came with them as well, but as Nan is a terrible sailor they went across using the Tunnel.

The first thing they decided to do was drive down to Boulogne and visit the amazing Aquarium called Nausicaa. What a fantastic time they had there, it really is a great place to visit, its fun as well as being educational. When they came out they found a little restaurant to have lunch.

Well Grandad isn’t quite sure what he had but it tasted lovely but had a strange flavour to it.

After lunch they all got back into the car and drove back towards Calais to visit Cite Europe, this is the big Shopping complex based just outside Calais. When they were driving up to it Corey said “Grandad your breath stinks, you’ve been eating garlic”. Well obviously that was the strange flavour that he noticed in his food that he had for lunch. The longer they drove the stronger the stink, as Corey called it, became. Eventually Nan, Corey and Paige could stand it no longer and opened all the windows in the car. When they arrived at Cite Europe, Nan and the two girls were in heaven with all these shops. Grandad just grunted and moaned that his feet hurt, the rest of them moaned that his breath stunk. After visiting numerous “Girlie” type clothes shops Grandad said “I’m off for a mooch round I’ll meet you back here in 1 hour” Off he went on his own, as he visited the shops he wanted to visit he noticed the strange looks he was getting as he got close to people and breathed all over them, so he called at the information desk in Carrefour, which is the huge Hypermarket. He enquired if they spoke English and was told that they did, although it was English it was English with a very strong accent. The young lady he was speaking to suddenly started to twitch her nose “Excuse me Sir but have you been eating AIL” asked the young lady. Well Grandad assured her that you don’t eat ALE but you drink it and he said that he hadn’t touched a drop of ALE or any other beer. Now this caused all sorts of problems, two other Carrefour assistants came up to help out their colleague and it eventually came out that AIL is the French word for garlic. (notice the difference in the spelling AIL and ALE). “Ah yes” said Grandad, “I think I must have had garlic in my meal”. “Then you must eat PERSIL” said the helpful young lady, “This will take away the smell”. “Are you sure” said Grandad. “Absolutely certain” said the young lady. So Grandad went off a bought a huge pack of PERSIL. He found a seat just next to the store and opened the pack of washing powder and took two or three pinches and put it in his mouth. Then all hell let loose, Grandad was coughing, spluttering and spitting, bubbles were coming out of his mouth, fortunately for Grandad two of the young assistants who had helped him earlier spotted him and came running over to help. Once they realised what he had done they brought over a large bottle of water and a plastic bucket and made Grandad keep swilling his mouth out until all trace of the washing powder had gone. Although Grandad was very grateful for all the help and assistance they had given him, he was none too pleased at what they had told him to do originally and he told them so. Three more assistants from the store came over to see what the fuss was and after a conversation in French one of the new arrivals, who was actually an English lady who lived and worked in France, explained to Grandad what had happened. You see when Grandad was told to eat some “PERSIL”, it turned out that PERSIL is the French name for PARSLEY and not the washing powder that Grandad thought it was. The newly arrived English lady explained that by chewing a small amount of Parsley it killed off the smell of the garlic. By this time Nan, Corey and Paige had returned to find Grandad surrounded by about a dozen of the store staff. The three of them thanked everyone concerned and apologised profusely, they grabbed Grandad by the hand and led him away back to the car.

When they reached the car Corey’s friend Paige turned to Corey and said “It’s brilliant coming out with your Grandad, you never know what’s going to happen next. Grandad just grunted.
