GRANDAD HEARS A SORRY TALE

Grandad was sitting in Cafe G having a coffee when his old mate Tommy walked in looking really down in the mouth. “Whatever is the matter” asked Grandad “Oh, I’m in real trouble with the wife” said Tommy. “Tell me what’s going on then” said Grandad “Well, as you know, it’s our 60th wedding anniversary, I know that you and everyone else are coming to the do on Saturday, but it was our actual anniversary yesterday, anyway I had no idea what to get her so I asked my daughter and she said “get her something with diamonds in as a 60th is the diamond anniversary”. So I went off up to Westwood Cross and looked round the jewellers shops up there and found a lovely diamond necklace and bought her that” “Blimey” said Grandad “she must have been pleased with that”. “Well she would have been if I had given her the right present”. “What do you mean” asked Grandad. “When I was out shopping I met up with a friend of my daughter who was looking for some little gifts for the raffle at the old folks home where she worked, so I went with her to help her choose a few things, anyway we went into one of those pound shops and she bought a few things and while we were in there I picked up some bits, one of them was a pack of cards because the great-grandkids like playing card games when they come round to see us “Right” said Grandad “so what’s happened”. “Well, when I got home I went upstairs and wrapped up the necklace and, as I had some wrapping paper left over I wrapped up the pack of cards for the kids as well and I took them to their house and told them it was a secret gift and they mustn't open it but must bring it to our house next time they came and open it then” said Tommy. “But I still don’t get what’s happened” said Grandad. “Yesterday morning I gave my wife the gift that I had bought her and told her that as it is our 60th wedding anniversary, here is something with diamonds in” said Tommy “and that’s when all hell broke loose” “I don’t understand” said Grandad “As I told you” said Tommy, “I had bought a pack of cards and wrapped them up for the kids, well I must have got the packages mixed up, because when my wife opened her package that had something with diamonds in she found a pack of ruddy cards” “Ah” said Grandad.

For King and Country 100 Years Later With thanks to Alf “Legs” Beeching Brave Young Margate Man Who Volunteered at Eighteen 7/71917 The parents of Drummer Donald Bell of the East Kent Regiment, Who resided at 6 Hawley Square Margate have now received news from the War Office that their son, previously reported wounded and missing in action in October his parents, brothers sisters and friends had been hoping for better tidings and they will have the sincere sympathy of a large number of Margate people in their great sorrow. Drummer Bell who will be remembered as being employed at the photographers studio of Mr. Walker at Elephant Hill, was only eighteen years of age when he volunteered for service at the front. Discharged at the outbreak of the war from the Royal Field Artillery, as medically unfit he a few days latter went to Canterbury and enlisted in the Buffs. While at the front he displayed great bravery in rescuing under heavy shell fire a Margate comrade who was badly wounded. Drummer Bell is described as always bright and cheerful while at the front. He has 2 brothers serving in the Army one of whom is in France and his friends are now anxiously awaiting news of the eldest who is in hospital in Wales suffering from wounds received in France. Airman Killed 14/7/1917 An inquest was held at Minster on the 6th instant into the death of probationary Flight Officer, Harold J Flynn R.N.A.S. who was killed in consequence of his aeroplane crashing to earth in a field, in the district. Evidence was given to the effect that something happened suddenly to the machine when flying at a great height. The pilot seemed to lose control, the aeroplane crashed to earth and death was instantaneous. The funeral of the gallant Officer took place on Saturday morning. Wounded Gunner G. Tilbeam R.G.A. son of Mr and Mrs R. Tilbeam of the Albion Inn, St. Peters has been wounded while serving in France in November 1915 and has seen a considerable amount of service. Margate Tradesman’s Bereavement 28/7/1917 Much sympathy will be felt for Mr Frederick Jones of Zion Place Margate who received news of the death of his youngest son. Private Alfred Henry Jones. Buffs East Kent Regiment who was only 19 , he first joined the Kent Cyclist in 1915 and was transferred to a Battalion of the East Kent Regiment. But for illness he would have been sent with a draft to an Eastern Land some 18 months ago. He went to France and was in some of the great battles on the Western Front. News had not been received for several months, his father has now been of officially informed that he died gallantly a soldiers death on the 18th November last. September in the Garden Late summer go’s into autumn September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It's also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer's colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can! Jobs to do this month Divide herbaceous perennials Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if possible Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn Plant spring flowering bulbs Please mention The Margate Handbook when responding to adverts

WHERE DO SAYINGS COME FROM

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water..
