Park Committee Minutes Concerning the Fountain.

From Alf “Legs” Beeching January 10th 1907 Resolved that the Borough Surveyor invite sketches from various firms, of fountains for the memorial of Mr. John Woodward February 27th 1907 Resolved to recommend that a fountain be erected in the park as a memorial and that the offer of Messrs MacFafland and Co to erect a fountain in accordance with the design submitted at an estimated cost of £275 be accepted.

March 4th 1907 The committee considered the question of the site for the fountain to be erected as a a memorial the donor of the park and it was resolved to recommend that the bandstand be removed on the centre of the green and that the fountain be placed there.

March 18th 1907 It was resolved to recommend that the site for the fountain be near the rain gauge with tow paths one from near the entrance gate and one path leading to the lake with a bath round fountain all to be gravelled and that the basin be 20 feet in diameter with a bed of ferns 5 feet in width round the same.

The whole, to be carried out at an estimated cost of £300. The centre piece only to be supplied by Messrs MacFarlane & Co. The question of the inscriptions to be placed on the fountain and the bronze plate to commemorate the opening of the park were considered and it was resolved that the following inscription be placed on the fountain-: “This fountain was erected as a memorial to the late Mr. John Woodward a native of this town who, in 1896 generously presented to the inhabitants of Margate the land to form this park together with additional land for the forming and widening the surrounding roads and six acres of building land on the south west side of the park, the proceeds derived from the sale thereof to be devoted towards the Expenses of the Park” Resolved-That a bronze plaque be placed on the right hand side of the main entrance gate to the park in Thanet Road to commemorate the opening of the park with the inscription as follows-: This Park was opened on the 1st day of June, 1896 by the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of London March 27th 1907 It was resolved that the basinof the fountain proposed to be erected as a memorial to the late Mr. John Woodward be 27feet in diameter and that the bed of ferns round the same be 3feet in width.

July 23rd 1907 The committee adjourned to the park and it was resolved that a patch of grass 10 feet wide and the path round the fountain be railed off as an enclosure foe the ceremony of turning on the water on the 29th inst. and a piece of grass near the Wilderness Hill entrance to the park was selected as a site for the Marquee in which the luncheon was to be held.

To make nail polish stay on nails longer first coat fingernails with white vinegar using a cotton ball. Let dry then apply nail polish. To quickly dry nail polish dip fingers into a bowl of cold water. Then shake access water from hands and allow hands to air dry.

Stilton and Walnut Pate Ingredients 225 g/ 8oz Stilton cheese, rind removed and cubed 50 g/ 2oz unsalted butter, softened 3 tablespoons port wine 125 g/ 5oz finely chopped walnuts Directions Place the cheese, butter, and port in a food processor and process until the mixture is smooth.

Transfer the cheese mixture to a mixing bowl, add the walnuts and mix thoroughly.

Transfer the pate to a serving bowl/dish, cover with cling film and chill until ready to serve.

This can be made up to 3 weeks in advance.

Great on warm toast.

GRANDAD AND HIS TOMATOES

Both of Grandad’s Daughters were round visiting and talking to Nan, “Where’s Dad” asked Mandie, the youngest Daughter. “Oh it’s that time of year again” said Nan “He’s down the shed sorting out his tomato plants, very soon he’ll start putting little pots of tiny tomato plants all around the window sills in the house,” “Oh no” said the two girls in unison “doesn’t it drive you mad”? They asked their Mother. “Oh it does, but I just keep out of his way. Now I’m not Anti Tomato, or anything like that, because Tomatoes straight from the garden or greenhouse, taste delicious, but the problem is, you find that they all decide to ripen at the same time, and, like most people he hates to see food going to waste, so he’ll get me to try to use Tomatoes in everything we cook. Or he’ll force them onto you lot. Or he’ll tell all our friends “Don’t go buying any Tomatoes because we’ve got loads you can have”. Or I find him putting a few bags of them in the car, each time we go out, just in case he meets someone who is “Tomatoeless” Or, worse still, when the main glut of Tomatoes appear he’ll put a huge bowl of them out the front, with a sign reading “Free Tomatoes-Please Help Yourself”, which is not really a good idea, because he then spends most of the day peering round the curtains, spying on everyone who stops to read the notice. Then he starts “Tutting” as people rifle through them, sniff them, hold them up to examine them, then after he sees them shuffle away after spending a good 5 minutes carefully selecting just 3 Tomatoes., then he goes running outside, before the next passer by comes, and carefully rearranges the, still huge amount of Tomatoes left in the bowl into a neater pile, hoping this will encourage the next person along to take more. At times I feel like pulling my hair out, when I see two large boxes of Tomatoes sitting in the corner of the kitchen, these are the reserves all ready to go out to top up the bowl. After about 3 days of peeking through the curtains, he gets fed up and decides that they are not going quick enough, so he the decides to make a huge batch of tomato soup, just to get rid of the ruddy things”. “Oh, I remember last year” said Tracey, the elder Daughter, “he scrubbed out the sink, boiled countless kettles to fill up the sink, then tipped a great big box of Tomatoes into the sink, went outside for a smoke and started doing something else, about an hour later he suddenly remembered the Tomatoes and when he came back, the boiling water he had left the Tomatoes in, had gone lukewarm and they had cooked a bit and gone squishy so he finished up with bits of skin and Tomatoes all in a big mess in the sink, and he got all of your pans out and started to sweat down all those onions, went out for a smoke again and let 2 of the pans burn, then the daft old beggar grabbed one of the pans and dropped it into the sink where all his Tomatoes were and ruined the lot, so he spent about 2 hours cleaning up and went and picked all the remaining Tomatoes and started all over again” “Oh yes, I remember” said Mandie “and we went out and left him to it, then when we got back later that afternoon the kitchen was like a battlefield and there were 2 big pans full of Tomato soup on the stove, but when we helped him to clear up I found a black bin bag with 20 empty Tomato soup cans in it, because he’d gone and ruined the next batch he was making so he’d popped up the shops and bought a load of cans of soup, but to this day he still thinks we don’t know” “I know” said Nan, “but it keeps him out of trouble” Recycling To Advertise in The Margate Handbook please Phone 01843 571145

Easy Tomato Soup This is Nan’s recipe NOT Grandad’s Ingredients makes 2 good bowls 4 tablespoons unsalted butter ½ large onion, cut into large wedges 2 lb whole peeled and crushed tomatoes 1½ cups water or you could use stock if you prefer 1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste Directions Melt butter in a large pan over medium heat, add onions, water, tomatoes and salt.

Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for about 40 minutes stirring occasionally.

Blend the soup with blender don’t overfill, do this in several batches if needed Serve with crusty bread, lovely

Facts About The month May was named for Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility.

The priests of Vulcan in Ancient Rome used to sacrifice a pregnant sow on the first of May. In 1644 maypoles were banned in England as a 'heathenish vanity'. Local officials who defiantly put them up could be fined five shillings a week.

In 1661, a maypole 123ft tall was put up in the Strand, London for the return of Charles II. Isaac Newton later used it as a support for his telescope Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter till at least the seventh of May.” (Anthony Trollope).

According to the roman poet Ovid: “Bad girls wed in May.” According to old Cornish superstition, it is unlucky to buy a broom during the month of May.
