March in the Garden This month, the days get longer, the sun gets stronger, and the first signs of spring arrive. But beware! Don't let your enthusiasm run away on mild days. Frosts will still be lurking around. It is better to delay sowing and planting if the soil is to wet and cold Rain will have compacted the soil surface, so gently fork the surface over - making sure not to damage any plants still lying dormant below the surface. This allows air to get to the roots and generally help with the micro-organic activity below the surface of the soil. Rake seed beds over in readiness for new lawns and apply a fertilizer. Edging of established lawns can be carried out now prior to the start of mowing. If the lawn is dry, the first cut can be made - with the blades set high.

Sow hardy annuals outdoors if the soil is in a fit condition.

THE HARBOUR SLUICE, BY MICK TWYMAN A worryingly recurrent rumour keeps surfacing about the old Harbour Sluice, which some ‘experts’ fondly imagine can solve the problem of silting if once more opened up.

Common sense, however, should query as to exactly why it was blocked off in the first place if it ever had any utility, which I can assure the reader, it never did. History can teach us salutary lessons if we only acknowledge its records, and in the case of the Harbour Sluice that lesson was hard-earned by the Pier and Harbour Company which, in 1826, incurred one of their most futile expenditures ever in installing it.

As one of its acts of public benefits to the town (and to protect its own interests as far as the controversial sinking fund was concerned ) the Pier and harbour Company had financed the building of the stone groyne at the Nayland Rock when Marine Terrace was being constructed, hoping that would assist in trapping sand in the bay, where there was then much beach stone. By 1826, the point was proved, and by altering the tidal flow in the Bay with that groyne their Harbour was choking with sand and seaweed which accumulated there also.

It was decided to form an arch through the Pier, 9 feet wide and 9 feet high, its bottom being paved with stone to act as a cart road with the vertical sides being 6 feet high to the spring of the arch. That tells the reader just how much sand has built up both inside and outside the pier since then as only a few feet of the top of the arch now show. The opening on the seaward side was fitted with an enormous and strongly constructed oak door, and even in 1826 the silting had already caused the level inside the Harbour to be 6 feet higher than on the seaward side. The reason for the silting was that stone groyne, but then, just as now, any amount of spurious reasons were advanced, such as the rotting of seaweed driven in by gales or the settling of sand churned up by the paddles of the steam boats. In fact, one proposal actually suggested that once the sluice was opened up a steam boat should be stationed stern- on to it and paddles run at full speed to churn up the sand and drive it through the wall.

The previous method of dredging the Harbour had been the filling by hand of a lighter, which was then taken out to sea and the spoil dumped. This method was expensive at 2 shillings per ton. The economics of using the sluice as a cart road brought the expenditure per ton right down to sixpence.

The whole scheme cost £853.00 a lot of money in those days, but it was an abject failure. After all, how could an arch that size pointing in the direction of the Kings Stairs flush out the Harbour? All that happened was that the water at the King’s Stairs became very agitated, badly affecting the boatmen who complained very loudly about the effect on their livelihood. There was no improvement in the silting, and the sluice almost certainly let more sand in. The process of dredging by hand into house drawn carts continued unabated as the only practical solution to the continual problem of silting. In actual fact, it is largely caused by the continual eastward drift of sand and man’s interference with tidal flow.

A violent summer storm in August, 1832, caused severe damage to the fabric of the Stone Pier, with part of it subsiding. Another feature of this storm was the tearing off from its supports of the great oak gate of the sluice, and although this damage was repaired the future of the sluice was limited.

During the following winter 5000 tons of silt were removed from the Harbour, partly by horse and cart, and partly by barrow.

In 1838 the useless sluice was block in and a small guillotine gate fitted in it, still extant to this day but long abandoned. The sluice was useless and a waste of money, as any future expenditure would also be!

Cliftonville Residents Association The Cliftonville Residents Association is now beginning its fourteenth year. Over the years we have developed an annual programme which has become part of the Cliftonville Calendar. This is the time of the year when we begin planning for the coming season. Last year the CRA put on 31 events, held mostly around the Oval Bandstand and Arena. We held 19 Band Concerts and 12 Farmers' Markets. This was a tremendous achievement and required a great deal of work and we hope that you all enjoyed these events.

1. CRA 14th Anniversary Lunch

This is always held this time of year to celebrate the formation of the CRA. This year the lunch will take place on Thursday April 22nd 2010 and will be held at Smiths Court Hotel. Eastern Esplanade, The lunch will comprise of three courses and the cost will be ÂŁ12.50 per person. If you are interested in this or have any prizes for the raffle please let June Chadband know as soon as possible.

2. Quiz Night

This will take place on Friday 12th March 2010 and will be held at Smiths Court Hotel, at 7.00 for 7.30 We need as many teams of 6/8 as possible to make this event a success:-This used to be a regular event and we have decided to reinstate it this year, after many requests. The cost will be ÂŁ7.00 per head and will include food, and drinks can be bought from the bar. So start getting your teams organised now!

3. Annual General Meeting

This will take place on Tuesday 27th April at Smiths Court Hotel, at 7.0 for 7.30. This is an important event as it is when we elect a committee for the coming year and when you can have your say about the way that the CRA is run. We need a good attendance for this and some new blood on the Committee. Committee members are required to help at the various events, so there is no point in putting yourself forward if you are not able to get involved in the events.

4. Farmers Markets

These will continue to be held on the last Sunday of each month from 10.00 to 1.00p.m. We have won the 'Best Farmers' Market in Kent' award for the last 3 years and we are in the 'top 3' for this Year. Judging takes place later this month, so keep your fingers crossed!

5. Summer Band Concerts

This years programme is still being discussed, and funding sought. June and Keith Chadband spent every Sunday afternoon for 19 weeks last year at the bandstand manning the Kiosk. They will not be able to do this again this year, so we are looking for a committed Committee to help this Summer. Without more help, they will not continue.

6. Coffee mornings

These are still taking place on the first Thursday of each month at 10.30 a.m. Last month was very popular and had an attendance of over 30 members. They take place at Smiths Court Hotel and all members are welcome. If you have any friends who are interested in joining the CRA, bring them along for a chat 7. Theatre trips and Holidays

June organised a great deal of events last year, theatre trips, holidays, days out. The Theatre trip to Phantom Of The Opera on March 30th is now Full, as is the 5 day holiday to Harrogate in September. There is still availability on the Tuscany/Pisa/LuccaI Florence Coach Holiday from June 12th - 20th with local pick-up. Mothers Day 14h March Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th century. Mothering Sunday was also known as 'Refreshment Sunday' or 'Mid-Lent Sunday'. It was often called Refreshment Sunday because the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed, in honour of the 'Feeding of the Five Thousand', a story in the Christian Bible. Young British girls and boys 'in service' (maids and servants) were only allowed one day to visit their family each year. This was usually Mothering Sunday. Often the housekeeper or cook would allow the maids to bake a cake to take home for their mother. Sometimes a gift of eggs; or flowers from the garden (or hothouse) was allowed. Flowers were traditional, as the young girls and boys would have to walk home to their village, and could gather them on their way home through the meadows.

GRANDAD LOSES A FRIEND Grandad has just heard some very sad news, a beloved old friend of his has finally given up the ghost and passed away. Grandad was saddened to hear about the news because he had been looking for his old friend for a long time. Grandad thought his friend had just gone away somewhere and would very soon put in a long overdue appearance. However this is now not to be.

The name of this friend……COMMON SENSE. Now Common Sense has been with us for many years, no one was sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic Red Tape.

He will be long remembered as having cultivated valuable lessons such as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain.

Why the early bird gets the worm.

Life isn’t always fair.

And….Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound principles (Don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable strategies (Adults, not children are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well meaning but overbearing and downright bloody stupid regulations were put into place. Such as a 6 year old boy being charged with sexual harassment after kissing his 6 year old sweetheart in a game of Kiss Chase. Teenagers being suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch. Boys being forbidden to play conkers. Changing the words of Nursery Rhymes such as Baa Baa Black Sheep. Plus a teacher being fired, after 17 years in his job, for reprimanding an unruly pupil. Common Sense also lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they as parents had failed to do, in disciplining their unruly and troublesome children. Or the case of the Teacher who was taken to court for “Daring” to take a sticky plaster out of her handbag and put it on the cut knee of a 7 year old boy.

Common Sense began losing the will to live as Criminals received far better treatment than their victims and householders were charged, taken to court and convicted for daring to stand up to burglars who had broken into their homes. The final nail in the coffin and the one that eventually killed him off was after a woman, who had purchased a “STEAMING HOT” cup of coffee and spilled a little in her lap, was promptly awarded a huge cash settlement because the café concerned did not display a notice stating that hot coffee is “HOT”.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, TRUTH and TRUST, by his wife DISCRETION, by his daughter RESPONSIBILITY and by his son REASON. He is survived by his 4 cousins by marriage, I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because, like Grandad, so few realised he was not just missing but dead. The epitaph on his gravestone reads “HERE LIES COMMON SENSE WHO DIED FROM POLICTICAL CORRECTNESS” If you still remember him then say a little prayer that one day a long lost relative of his will suddenly turn up an put things right again. It really is times like this when you begin to wonder if Guy Fawkes was right in trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

2010 QRA Margate Beach Cross Racing Weekend The sand on Margate main beach will once again be pushed around and shaped into jumps and whoops etc by the Ovenden Plant machines for the 2010 QRA Margate Beach Cross weekend on the 6th 7th March.

There will be action from Solo Motocross bikes, Adult and Youth Quads competing in the minimum of ten, adrenalin fuelled wheel to wheel, shoulder to shoulder races. The racing takes place on both Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th and action gets underway at 9,30am both days.

This event is FREE for spectators and the backdrop to the action on the beach is a fairground, market stalls and the town of Margate itself. This is the fifth QRA Margate Beach Cross event and each time attracts over 15,000 spectators to the resort.

Reigning King Of Margate and ten times ACU British Quad Champion Paul Winrow will be out to retain his title, which will also be his historic debut riding for Austrian KTM Factory team. His is bound to be pushed all the way by French sand specialist Jérome Bricheux who is crossing the channel once again and bringing several European mates with him, along with many top Brits making over 50 Quads in the line up.

Around 40 plus Solos will be racing with Winrow not content just riding the Quad he is also riding in the Solo class races, so we will see how fit the reigning British champ really is.

In addition to the adult classes, the 200/250cc Youth Quads join the event once again after the success of their first steps on the Kent seaside resorts golden sands last year. Harry Miller and team mate Jak Griffiths of Jaks Quads will be out playing in the sand looking to lift the youth title being chased all the way by many other budding future stars of the sport.

Three races per class each day, practise and Quad Qualifier races on Saturday morning, starting at 9.30am. In addition to the three races each class on Sunday there will be the Dash For Cash finals in the Adult Quads and Solo to conclude the weekend to bring an exciting conclusion to the weekend.

This two day event is also going to be ‘historic’ as it is round 1 and 2 of the new QRA UK Beach Cross Championship. So the competitors are not just going for the Margate crowns in each class but they want to get off to a good start in teh points standing in the UK Beach Cross Championship.

This new six round championship, over three weekends at different beaches in the UK will expand into Europe in 2011 with the Margate event being the starting point each year.

St. David’s Day 1st March Patron Saint of Wales St David ( Dewi Sant ) was a Celtic Monk, Abbot and Bishop, who lived in the sixth century. He spread the word of Christianity across Wales.

The most famous story about St. David tells how he preached to a large crowed and the ground rose up so that he was standing on a hill so that it was easier for everyone to see and hear him. St. David’s Day is celebrated by wearing Daffodils or Leeks. Both plants are regarded as national emblems.

There are many explanations as to how a leek became a national emblem. One is that St. David told the Welsh army on the eve of a battle with the Saxons, to wear leeks in their caps so that they could distinguish friends from enemy. Shakespeare also mentions in Henry V, that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. On St. David’s day children dress in their national costume, with their tall black hats, white frilled cap and long dress.
