THE RECORD OF EARLY ORGANISED FREEMASONRY IN MARGATE From Alf “Legs” Beeching First recorded establishment is the warranting of the Thanet Lodge No 476 in 1785. The Lodge met at the Parade Hotel from that year up until 1823, when it moved to the Liverpool Arms public house in upper High Street. It was erased from the list of Lodges in 1829, when its numbers was 478 Another Lodge appears in 1813, Union Lodge No.169 (now No. 127) The early meeting places of this Lodge are as follows:1813 - The Duke’s Head, The Parade 1827 - The Royal Hotel, Cecil Square 1835 - The Crown & Anchor, Zion Place 1837 - Brother Wood’s Bathing Rooms, High Street 1838 - The Britannia Hotel, Fort Road 1838 - Wood’s Bathing Rooms, High Street 1839 –Oporto House, Cecil Square 1844 –Lodge Rooms, 1 Cecil Street 1846 -Lodge Rooms, 4 Churchfield Place The above information was kindly supplied by the Library and Museum of Freemasonry, at Freemasons Hall London. They also state that they have no record of organised Freemasonry at Margate before the date of 1785 and very little information on Freemasonry in general in this country before the establishment of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717.

Hearty Scotch Broth Lamb, neck or leg shank 3-4 Carrots, chopped 1 Parsnip, chopped 2-3 Celery stalks, chopped 1 Onion, chopped 1 Leek, chopped Pearl Barley, 1 cup Stock powder or cube Peppercorns Salt to taste Place the meat and peppercorns into a large saucepan with cold water and bring to boil cover with a lid and simmer gently for 1 ½ hours Strain the broth into another pan and leave to cool when cold skim off fat from broth Remove the meat from the bones and cut off all the fat dice and return to the broth add the stock cube, and pearl Barley. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for ½ hour add vegetable and simmer until the vegetable are soft

Opening hard to open jars Try using a rubber glove when trying to undo screw tops it makes it a lot easier

GRANDAD GETS CONFUSED AGAIN Grandad got a phone call from Tracey, one of his Daughter’s asking if he could go out tomorrow and pick up some shopping for her, as she had to go on a course connected with her work, which meant she wouldn’t be back until late. “Of course I can” said Grandad “what is it you need”? He asked. “I’ll leave you a list, it’s not too much but it means a bit of running around to different places to pick up the bits I need” Tracey said.

The next morning Grandad went round to Tracey’s house and found the list she had written for him, along with an envelope with money in it to buy the things.

Then, just as he was leaving the telephone rang and Grandad answered it, only to find it was his Daughter “Oh I’m glad I’ve caught you, when I was getting ready this morning I found that I had run out of deodorant, so can you pick me a new one, it’s not on the list, some of them irritate me so I’ve left the empty one on the side for you, so you can see what sort I need” said Tracey. No problem” said Grandad and off he went round the shops. His Daughter had not only listed the items she wanted but she had put down which shops to buy them from. Grandad carried on around the different shops picking up all the bits from the list, after a couple of hours he had finally bought everything needed so he set off back to the car. When he put his hand in his pocket he found the empty deodorant, “Oh Crikey” said Grandad to himself “I’ve forgotten this thing. So he called into a chemist shop and he looked at the label to see what sort he needed, then he looked at it again, as he couldn’t believe what he had first read. Feeling a bit embarrassed he went up to the counter and spoke to the assistant “Can you tell me if you sell Bottom Deodorant please” asked Grandad a bit sheepishly “I’m sorry Sir, what is it you want” said the assistant.

“Bottom Deodorant” repeated Grandad. “I’m still not sure what you mean” the assistant replied. “I need Bottom Deodorant” said Grandad once more. “We don’t sell anything like that, in fact I don’t know of anyone who sells that and I don’t think that anyone makes anything like that” said the assistant who, by now was starting to give Grandad some funny looks. “I can assure you that it is made and sold, because I have the empty one with me” said Grandad. He took out the empty one from his pocket and read out to the assistant what it said on the container “To apply, remove screw cap and push up bottom” said Grandad.

The assistant just exploded with laughter and when she calmed down she explained to, a now very embarrassed, Grandad that it was just a normal stick of underarm Deodorant and exactly what the instructions meant. Grandad very quickly left the shop and later that evening Grandad went round to his Daughters and gave her all the bits he had picked up for her. “Did you get the Deodorant she asked. “No they had sold out and are waiting for it to come in” said Grandad as he hurriedly left to go home.

Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There's also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments section.
