Hello everybody and welcome to issue number 103 of the MARGATE HANDBOOK. Thank you for all for the letters, phone calls and e-mails, please keep them coming as they are always very welcome. Well this month we had almost 50 phone calls and e-mails about the mistake in last month’s magazine. We rather foolishly allowed Grandad to visit the printers and, they in turn, rather foolishly let him “Have a go” on the huge printing machine, what happened next was chaos. He completely messed things up as we finished up with no Page 23 but Page 24 was in twice. So both us and the printers have said NEVER AGAIN. EARLY MARGATE INDENTURES OF CONVEYANCE I was recently asked by a lady when she was visiting my Local Studies day in the Gateway at Margate about the evolution of a certain Cliftonville area. I am aware that there are other people living in Margate who are also interested in the development of the Town in the Victorian era and this being so, I am going to reveal from extensive documentation I researched at the East Kent Archives at Whitfield near Dover ( now sadly closed forever) certain indentures which show how this was taking place and where and by whom.

September 3rd. 1878 This is a two part indenture so this one is straight forward and it was drawn up between Alfred Reeves of Ramsgate; Gent (one part) and James Mercer Edwards of the same place; Gent (2nd part) On the above date paid to Alfred Reeves by James Mercer Edwards the sum of £200.

Alfred Reeves granted James Mercer Edwards all the hereditaments specified in this schedule together with all the buildings, fixtures rights and easements and appurtenances etc. to hold the said premises to the use of John Mercer Edwards and his Heirs and Assigns– all that piece of land situate lying and being in Margate in or near a certain place called Cliftonville and the dimensions and abbutals where of are described in the plan drawn on a certain indenture of conveyance dated August 31st 1878. This was made between Frederick George Underhay and Joseph Taylor of the )one part) and the said Alfred Reeves of the other part., and all those Twenty Two tenements or Cottages which Joseph Taylor father of the afore mentioned Joseph Taylor, erected distinguished as Numbers –2-4-6-8-1012-14-16-18-20-22-24-26-28-30-32-34-36-38-40-42 and44 Clifton Cottages.

Usually these documents are extremely large and if one has worked from these before they will know how repetitive they are and sometimes more complex to sort out than one would imagine. Luckily this was only a two part document but I have had them with about eight persons and not all living locally. Local Studies rooms in libraries hold a mine of information so if anyone is interested please call in any time or when I am in situ on Wednesdays.

This is a very small indenture and also a plan which was drawn to accompany it dated March 18th 1878.

Between Herbert Tritton Sankey, Gent of Margate {one part) and James Andrews of the same place, Gent {2nd part) James Andrews paid £20 to Herbert Tritton Sankey and doth grant and convey to James Andrews all that piece of land being part of the larger piece now used as a Cricket Field situate in Cliftonville

Money Better Spent Elsewhere?

Part One (Part Two next month) Iain Betson muses on where your driving priorities should lie.

I was on a dual-carriageway, doing the national speed limit, the traffic around me flowing nicely, when way up ahead I saw hazard lights flash and brake lights come on.

Suddenly the two fast moving lanes of traffic were reduced to a crawl about a mile short of a large roundabout intersection. I slowed my speed, keeping space between me and the car in front (that space was mine, that behind me was not) and when stationary kept an appropriate gap between me and the proceeding car (I made sure I could see his rear tyres and the tarmac behind them).

In the queue where the inevitable number of drivers swapping lanes, in a futile attempt to find their way through, but all they manage to do was further slow the traffic and created a hazard to motorcyclists riding up the centre.

The Great Detective When I finally reached the cause of the hold-up I saw a crumpled Ford Ka at the roundabout junction, its offside wing smashed-in and bits of the bumper over the road.

There was no sign of the lady driver but the police presence indicated the accident had happened a while ago, as a tow-truck was waiting to pull the Ka’s remains away.

How did I know the Ka’s driver was a lady? Well in truth I cannot be 100% certain, but what leads me to this assumption was that the Ka was decorated with lots of those stick-on pink flower transfers all down its C pillar and the headlamps had a pair of black plastic eyelashes above them. So I think I was on pretty firm ground in my guess.

Conversely, I would have assumed the driver was male if the car had been a Corsa with a dustbin sized exhaust and running on 16” after-market rims.

Sherlock Holmes deductions aside, as I continued my journey I mused that perhaps, instead of spending their earnings on adornments, which added nothing to the value of the car, perhaps the driver would have got better return on their money if they had signed up for an advanced driving scheme? Even if that Ka driver was not at fault, that accident means that when it comes to their insurance renewal they will have to answer “Yes” when asked: “Have you ever been involved in an accident that was, or wasn’t, your fault in the last five years?”

We all know what a positive answer to that question will do to the premium.

And after that they will still be faced with the cost of repair, or replacing, their car too.

Grandad’s visit to the hospital Grandad was sitting in the out patients department at the QEQM hospital waiting for his 9-O-Clock appointment when another elderly gentleman, who was well into his 80’s came shuffling into the waiting room. He was dressed very smartly, with a collar and tie and highly polished shoes. He very politely said “Good Morning” to Grandad and explained that he was here to have a final check up on his arm, which he had badly broken some weeks ago in a fall. They got into conversation and the elderly gentleman explained that he gets up at 5.30am every morning which gives him time to iron his shirt and polish his shoes and generally get himself ready to go and visit his wife who has been in a Nursing Home for 11 years, he further explained that this is something he has done every day for all of those 11 years. Whilst they were talking the gentleman kept looking at his watch and getting just a little irritated and he turned to Grandad and said” Do you think we will have to wait much longer”?

Grandad replied that he didn’t really know, but someone will call us when they are ready for us. At that the gentleman got up and walked over to the reception desk and asked the receptionist the same question. “I can’t say” said the receptionist “but as soon as they are ready for you I will call you”. The gentleman came and sat back down next to Grandad. “What’s up” asked Grandad “have you got to be somewhere else or something” “Yes” replied the gentleman “I have to be at the Nursing Home before 10.00am because that is when they stop serving breakfast and every day for the past 11 years I have sat down and had breakfast with my wife”. “Well I don’t suppose your wife will mind if you miss it just this once” said Grandad. “Oh she won’t know if I’m there or not, in fact she hasn’t done for many a year now, because she suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, in fact she doesn’t even know who I am, but I get up every morning and get dressed as smartly as I can and go and have breakfast with her”. Grandad was surprised and asked him “You go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are, Why”? The elderly gentleman turned to Grandad put his hand on Grandad’s shoulder and replied “She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is”. Just then a Doctor came out and called the gentleman through for his appointment so he got up and left. Grandad was holding back the tears as he sat there in silence pondering over what the gentleman had said. The happiest people in this life don’t necessarily have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything they have.

WW1 Centenary The 4th of August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War Even when German troops invaded France and Belgium as part of the Schlieffen Plan, Britain did not have to go to war. Germany hoped Britain would stay out of the war altogether. However, the Germans knew that Britain had promised to defend Belgium under the Treaty of London of 1839.

On the 11th November 1918 The Armistice was signed at 11am in the French town of Redonthes bringing the War to an end

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential.

Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.

Banana Bread Ingredients 285g/10oz plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 110g/4oz butter, plus extra for greasing 4 ripe bananas, mashed

½ tsp salt

225g/8oz caster sugar 2 eggs

85ml/3fl oz milk mixed with 1½ tsp lemon juice or vinegar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Preparation method

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, mashed bananas, milk and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Fold in the flour mixture.

Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm/8in x 5in loaf tin and pour the cake mixture into the tin. Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or until well-risen and golden-brown. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
