Microbiology Research Assistant

Researched protocols to test the antimicrobial properties of several types of materials, including fabrics, solid surfaces, vinyl, etc.

The Alithini Theater

The Alithini Theater is a historic theater that offers a variety of uses for the performing arts. Neoclassic Revival style is demonstrated through strong architectural columns and artistic balance of soft colors and ornate gilding. Low hanging ceilings compress the occupant’s visual attention, then release into open volumes that allow for the eye to travel evenly throughout the room.

Architectural lighting accentuates the historic nature of the building while decorative chandeliers provide ambient lighting that supports the classical mood of the space.

The Velvet Curtain

Chile Garlic Peanuts

Peanuts have been a classic bar food snack since the mid-1800s. Peanuts are naturally high in fat content, making them perfect for snacking on while consuming a delicious alcoholic beverage. This Chile Garlic Peanut recipe found in the UW-Stout archives was perfect to match the location and concept for the Velvet Curtain cocktail bar and restaurant. With pops of hot chile and zings of lime, this recipe offers a lavish kick to the menu of The Velvet Curtain, elevating the classy and sparkling setting of the interior.

Location: French Quarter, Louisiana

The French Quarter, also commonly referred to as “The Quarter” by locals, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans. Due to its longstanding history, the French Quarter houses numerous historic buildings that were meant to form it into one large national historic landmark. This makes it a great destination for locals and tourists looking to explore the area and its rich historic roots. The French Quarter is a perfect location for The Velvet Curtain due to its high visitor count and intrigue by tourists. Since this cocktail bar and lounge is based on the secrecy of a speakeasy, its reputation is widely spread by word of mouth. Consumers that catch wind of the mysterious Velvet Curtain will gain a rush of excitement when they realize they’re in on a secrete that many other people may not know about.

A speakeasy-based bar that inspired The Velvet Curtain was Bar Tonique, also based in the French Quarter. It similarly uses word of mouth popularity to draw in its customers. While it is based in a historic building, it still provides a cozy and enticing environment for its occupants.

This Tapas and Craft Cocktail bar provides a laid back, mysterious, and sleek atmosphere for guests who are looking to step away from their every day routine. Deep, rich colors are used throughout the space to convey elegance and accentuate sophistication. With a focus on the cocktail lounge of this space, guests will be encouraged to relax and socialize in this modern twist environment of a 1920's Art Deco speakeasy.

NEXT is a collaborative single profit company that prioritizes sustainability, cohesion, balance, and inclusion. This 11,000 square-foot space is designed using inspiration from local elements, including the Bluebonnet flower. The implementation of Human-Centric design is shown through use of Third Space, biophilic design, and inclusive design, which prioritizes employee wellness and productivity. Organic shapes, natural colors, and fluid mobility create an encompassing work environment.

Retail Project

This clean, reflective retail space offers rejuvenating products and confidence to its customers. The valiant teals, pops of pink, and neutral tones and elements mimic the sophisticated energy of Chanel. Natural greenery and textures direct the eye throughout the space and offer a sense of familiarity against the bold colors and reflective light.

Positive Alternatives

Positive Alternatives is a non-profit organization serving at-risk teens across the north and central Wisconsin region. With six to eight teens residing at their Menomonie location, their space needs to be safe, welcoming, and efficient for all residents and employees. We focused on behavioral health and color psychology to determine how to cultivate the proper environment for comfort and healing. In a living space, lack of privacy, time of day, and amount of people can impact ones mental health.

This location will be a homey, comfortable environment for residents to rejuvinate and grow. Aspects relating to the nature of Menomonie cater to the needs of residents and staff alike. Additionaly, the renovation will be spacious and sufficeint for employees to work effectively. The rooms in this space are connected through serene colors and ideas of reflection, which encourage residents and staff to acknowledge their emotions and actions.

Design solutions such as sunlighting, clean air quality, and strategic color use can help to regulate stressful emotions. It’s important to note that patients are away from home, in an unfamiliar place. It’s incredibly effective to provide both public and private spaces for patients to have a safe place to be with themselves. Additionally, behavioral health studies have found that nature-based design has optimum calming effects through the use of color, curves, and organic shapes. Among the most effective colors to use in design, which include green and blue.

YOU Media Teen Library

YOUmedia has decided to expand its digital learning program to locations throughout the Midwest. You have been hired by YOUmedia to design a teen space focused on digital learning at one of the Milwaukee Public Library locations. The library has identified approximately 3000 SF of space on the second floor that will be the future home for this project. This is a space where teens can hang out, get help with homework, experiment with design software in a range of disciplines, record music, and participate in a variety of digital media activities and workshops.

Organic Productive Refreshing Rejuvenating

One of the main subjects I researched for this project was Attention Restoration Theory. Creating a space designed off of this idea helped me pay close attention to the materials I was using, as well as how colors interacted with one another. Another great source of inspiration for me was my research on Herme Rive Gauche and the techniques used for adding new architecture into historic buildings.

A new digital learning program has been announced to open at one of the Milwaukee Public Library locations. This 3,000 square-foot library space provides a productive and rejuvinating area for students to socialize, experiment, and recieve help with their studies. Organic materials, textures, and natural colors are used throughout the interior to refresh the minds of students and help them concentrate on their success.

Palm Springs

This Palm Springs home is a mid-century modern original on slab designed by architect Joseph Eichler. This project focuses on Universal and Accessible Design to suit the client’s needs.

My clients are Rosa (age 60) and Clara (age 30). They live together in a mid-century modern Palm Springs home. Rosa has Multiple Sclerosis, a condition that can cause symptoms such as slurred speech, difficulty walking by one’s self, and vision impairment. Rosa and Clara are looking for a modern day Boho interior that replicates the desert landscape and Coachella Valley.

This home offers a serene, tranquil environment for the mother and daughter that live here. The interior replicates the desert landscape of the Coachella Valley by using rustic oranges and earthy textures inspired by the Boho style. This space also provides safety and reassurance through a universal and accessibility-focused design.

This multifunctional space blends a small client-centric conference room and flexible individual workspaces in the captivating spirit of Haworth. With chic wall storage showcasing client products, this room harmonizes artistic expression with ergonomic elegance, inviting you into a narrative where function, flair, and Haworth style effortlessly intertwine.

This group project combined the talents of Interior Design and Industrial Design students to create a cohesive, user-friendly space. Using inspiration from selected furniture dealing companies, we created our color palette and designed our furniture pieces according to our end users and their needs.

Honeyheart Museum

The Honeyheart Museum provides a space for appreciation of the arts, specifically in music and musical theater. The patrons of Athens, Ohio hold a deep respect for the arts and how it has merged with the local environment. The deep hills and rustic brick roads are incorporated into the lighting design by mixing curvaceous designs with static lighting solutions. This space will combine adequate lighting with shadows and drama to mimic the flow of music, while still following illuminance level guidelines and allowing appropriate levels of natural daylight.

“Ashfall” emphasises the balance between beauty and destruction in nature. Nature’s unpredictability creates anticipation and restlessness for the disruptions we patiently wait for. A volcanic eruption, poses devestating consequences in the moment, but appears peaceful and even serene while dormant. This combination between serenity and danger are frozen in time within this custom light fixture, allowing us as viewers to appreciate its fierceness from a distance.

With the semi-translucency of the resin, diffused lighting comes through the colors and folds of the mimicked volcanic explosion while indirect light floods from the top of the fixture.

The lamp used for this fixture is dimmable and mimics the flow of our Circadian Rhythm. This picture features the “Wind Down” setting of the lamp, which has a color temperature of 2700K. This setting properly portrays the warmth of this piece, and accents the use of yellow and orange resin within the lampshade.
