Fromearlyexplorerstocontemporaryscientists,naturalistshave examinedislandfloraandfaunaofOceania,discoveringnew species,carefullydocumentingthelivesofanimals,andcreating workcentraltotheimageofOceania.These“discoveries”and exploratorymoveshavehadprofoundlocalandglobalimpacts. Hyakunin’shu:Readingthe HundredPoets inLateEdoJapan exploresthe“popularliteraryliteracy”oftheJapaneseattheedge ofmodernity.Byreproducingandtranslatingapopular annotatedandillustratedAnsei-era(1854–1859)editionofthe Hyakuninisshu—forhundredsofyearsthemostbasicand best-known waka primerintheentireJapaneseliterary canon—JoshuaMostowrevealshowcommonersofthetime madesenseofthecollection.Thankstothepopularizationofthe poemsintheearlymodernperiodandtheadventofcommercial publishing,the Hyakunin’shu (asitwaspopularlycalled)wasno longertheexclusiveintellectualpropertyoftheupperclassesbut partofapoeticheritagesharedbyallliterateJapanese.
Mostowtracesthe Hyakunin’shu’shistoryfromthefirst publishedcollectionsintheearlysixteenthcenturyandprinted commentariesofformerlyesotericandsecretexegesistolater editionsthatincludeimaginedportraitsofthepoetsand, ultimately,picturesofthe“heart”—pictorializationsofthe meaningofthepoemsthemselves.Hisstudyilluminatesthe importanceof“variant OneHundredPoets,”suchasthe Warrior OneHundredPoets,inpopularizingthecollectionandthework’s strongassociationwithfeminineeducationfromtheearly eighteenthcenturyonward.TheNationalLearning(Kokugaku) movementpursuedaphilologicalanalysisofthepoems,leading totranslationsofthe Hyakunin’shu intocontemporary, vernacular,spokenJapanese.Thepoemseventuallyservedasthe basisofacardgamethatbecameastapleofNewYearfestivities. Liu’scarefulanalysisoftheinnerworkingsofGMDyouth organizationsalsoilluminatestheday-to-dayoperationsof militarytrainingingender-segregatedupper-middle schools—includinghowthegovernmentselectedinstructorsand theskillstaughttostudents.AccordingtoLiu,mandatory militarytrainingcontributedtopreventingmajorprotestagainst thegovernmentbutthepolicywasnotwithoutcritics.
