Publisher’s note

A New Life in the Med WINTER IS OVER AND I FOR ONE AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE LONGER DAYS AND WARMER SUN. HERE AT SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY, WE CELEBRATE THE COMING OF SPRING BY TAKING a trip to the Mediterranean to soak up the atmosphere of the French Riviera, to sample Turkish delights and to discover the best of Italian design. We start our journey in Marseille, with a visit to one of the Mediterranean’s largest refit and repair yards that has recently been taken over by the Italian Palumbo Group. The French team describe their facilities as a ‘superyacht pampering area’. The acquisition affirms the Mediterranean as a key superyacht refit location. Staying on the refit tack, we continue along the Cote d’Azur to Monaco, where one of our editors interviews nautical designer Stefano Pastrovich about a recent refit that he had undertaken – for the 42m LifeSaga. The article delves deep into how to carry out a successful refit; in terms of both design results and budgeting skills. Take a look on page 10 to see some astounding results. Jetting over to Turkey, we land at RMK Marine’s newly expanded superyacht fabrication hall. Using the very latest composite construction techniques, RMK is building the new generation of modern superyachts that require less maintenance and offer 10 percent more accommodation space. Built for Oyster Yachts, the 38m flybridge sailing yacht Twilight is one example of their craftsmanship. I had the privilege to visit Twilight during last year’s Monaco Yacht Show; she was stunning indeed. The judging panel at this year’s World SuperYacht Awards were equally impressed – she is a nominee in next month’s awards. Read the full yacht report on page 30. Our trip ends in Italy – to some, the home of style and design. Italy’s prowess in automotive metallic paint finishes is world famous. Now, the superyacht industry is benefiting from that wealth of knowledge as the images of the 50m motor yacht Auspicious on page 50 portray. She too received an extensive refit; her new, metallic, paint job is as radiant as the summer sun. MARCO GEELS | CCO MARCO@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

NEWS IN BRIEF Supporting the Yachting Community

New Owner for Icon Yachts

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has launched a 24/7 service operating from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ISS Yachting Services handles all yachts when required but in particular the larger classes of vessel which, due to their size, are unable to call at local marinas and require personalised assistance in getting alongside and cleared. ISS Global Marine Travel has also launched a new mobile app for its yacht clients, which is now available via iTunes and the Play Store.

Dutch superyacht builder Icon Yachts has reached a deal with a new owner that substantially strengthens the future of the company. The new backing will not only secure the yard’s current projects but allow Icon to remain an independent company and embark upon an exciting new growth phase. “This deal sees the marriage of new long term committed investment with our proven capabilities at Icon Yachts,” said CEO Jen Wartena. “It’s the strengthening of our financial backbone that we have been seeking since we embarked on our ambitious journey to create this forward-thinking shipyard.”

CRN on the Rise

M5 Rig Test

The new 60m superyacht of CRN, Hull number 133, was launched on 1 March at a private ceremony. This was just weeks after CRN, part of the Ferretti Group, signed two new LOI for the construction of two new 44m superyachts, destined for the Middle-Eastern and European markets respectively. For these two vessels CRN harks back to the great tradition and history of the brand, taking inspiration from SuperConero, the historic line of the seventies, in a project presented for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Show 2013.

The remodelled sailing yacht M5 (Mirabella V) was put through her paces off Falmouth, UK as her new carbon rig was tested during sail trials. Designed and manufactured by Carbo-Link with OYS making the fittings, the 34 new carbon fibre stays and titanium fittings with built-in dynamic fibre optics have decreased the weight of the rig by 18t. During the refit, Pendennis has completed extensive engineering works which have included replacing the main engines, generators, switchboards and sewage treatment plant along with an upgrade of the air conditioning system, electrics and entertainment system, and a 10-year DNV survey.

NEWS IN BRIEF Fibreglass Flagship

Feadship Launches Como Feadship has launched the 46.22m semi-displacement motoryacht Como, created for the highly experienced yachtsman Neville Crichton. Mr Crichton decided the time had come to commission an entirely custom superyacht of the highest possible quality. Hugely influenced by his ideas regarding design aesthetics and the lavish use of glass, Como is a triumph in every respect. “Having built many yachts in New Zealand, my choice of Feadship came after a careful and extensive examination of its expertise and facilities,” comments Neville Crichton. “I am pleased to be able to report that Feadship has exceeded my expectations.”

H1 is the first yacht of the new SL118 line recently launched at the Sanlorenzo shipyard. The 36.5m Sanlorenzo SL118 becomes the new flagship of the historic planing hull range of yachts. In today’s nautical market, Sanlorenzo decided to produce a new flagship that encloses innovative solutions and large spaces, without altering the traditional family feeling that characterises Sanlorenzo models.

Sunseeker for Formula I Pilot

New Perini Navi CEO The Board of Directors of Perini Navi has appointed Enrico Dell’Artino, who was already a board member, as the company’s new CEO. The appointment follows the resignation for personal reasons of Giancarlo Ragnetti, who will stay on as board member. Mr Dell’Artino has a broad experience of managing industrial companies, both national and multinational and will be supported by Burak Akgül, Director of Sales, Marketing and Design and Vanni Marchini, Director of Operations.

The eagerly anticipated Sunseeker 155 Yacht, Blush, was launched into the water for the very first time at the Sunseeker International shipyard in January. The seatrials were scheduled to take place in February before the 155 Yacht will be delivered to its new owner, Eddie Jordan, in early spring. The 155 Yacht is the biggest project ever undertaken by Sunseeker International and is the first ever semi-displacement, round bilge hull from the company.

NEWS IN BRIEF Rondal’s Flying Start In the first week of 2014 Rondal secured two prestigious mast orders. At first Rondal was entrusted with the complete rig package for a 43.5m Frers-designed performance sloop, currently under construction at Royal Huisman. The rig features a 58m, four-spreader carbon fibre mast and furling boom. The second order, from Holland Jachtbouw, is the rig package for a 46m world cruising sloop conceived by Tripp Design. Rondal will supply a four-spreader carbon fibre mast with a total length that just clears the Panama Canal’s Bridge of the Americas. The complete package includes an exclusive Rondal ‘styled to order’ carbon fibre furling boom and composite standing rigging. Both projects are due to be stepped in 2015.

New Life for Ilona

Futurist Superyacht

Sunreef Yachts launched a new range of fast performance cruisers with as show piece the Ultimate 165. This extremely spacious vessel has a total living area of 560m2 and can easily accommodate twelve guests and ten crew. Arrangements of the lodgings offers an extraordinary 135m2 huge, luxury saloon open space with relax area, dining and bar. On top of that the yacht features an open cockpit connecting with saloon via sliding doors. The yacht’s 105m2 customised flybridge provides a Jacuzzi, two navigation stations, a big dining area and lounging chairs.

The scaffolding is now in place around 74m Ilona at STP in Palma de Mallorca where several specialist refitters have begun work. Ilona is expected to stay at the yard until June for a first phase of works, mostly paintwork, as well as interiors and machinery maintenance. A second phase will begin in September. The superyacht, which sails under an Australian flag, was built in the Netherlands by Amels in 2004. Two years ago she underwent a major refit at Amels, including a new helipad and pool with movable floor.

Unmatched Delivery Time The sale of the Amels 180 superyacht in February highlights the increasing weight owners place on superior delivery times combined with exceptional quality and design. Advised by the experts at Burgess, the owners opted for a 55m yacht, with interiors by designer Christian Liaigre, to be delivered in May 2015. This unmatched delivery time for a superyacht of this calibre exemplifies the unique value of Amels’ successful Limited Editions concept. Amels CEO Rob Luijendijk commented: “Our trusted Limited Editions platform eliminates technical risk and allows the owners to focus on customising the ‘fun parts’.”

TURNING THE REFIT DREAM INTO REALITY

Transformation to the Sublime THE 42M LIFESAGA RECENTLY RECEIVED A COMPREHENSIVE REFIT FROM HOLLAND JACHTBOUW – THE RESULTS ARE BREATHTAKING. THE VESSEL ILLUSTRATES that classical rules still play a significant role in modern high-tech design. To learn more about the importance of a good relationship with the owner, organising the financial planning and, most importantly, how to achieve such stunning results, SuperYacht Industry’s Tom Scott spoke to interior designer Stefano Pastrovich.

tefano Pastrovich is an interior designer who is passionate about achieving the extraordinary in a superyacht refit project – what the man himself calls the Pastrovich ‘Wow’ effect. He is as much an ardent fan of the principles of fifth century classical design as he is of the very latest advances modern technology has to offer. The recently refitted 42m LifeSaga illustrates this symbiosis of traditional and technological to perfection.

Clever Connections

Stefano Pastrovich at his office in Monaco.

Pastrovich MY Life Sage.indd 12

The main saloon underwent the most significant changes – it was completely stripped and redesigned. The result connects the exterior terrace and interior saloon with clever use of light, wood and geometry. Although not really a fan of spotlights, Mr Pastrovich has used them to great effect in the saloon. “The spotlights are circularly positioned to reach the maximum beam of the yacht,” explains Mr Pastrovich. “This results in an increase in the feeling of the yacht’s width. It’s an optical illusion.” The circular forms in the main saloon follow Mr Pastrovich’s interpretation of classical fifth century rules of geometric design where circles in plan view are divided into twelve equal sectors of 30°. The result?

“Adjacent spaces feel connected, the exterior and interior become one and there is a feeling of endless views.” The teak flooring uses a similar trick. As the main walking route is along the longitudinal axis of the yacht, the teak planks follow the longitudinal pattern thus visually reinforcing the connection between the interior and the exterior. “By treating the interior teak floor and the oak walls with a natural wax finish, it gives them the same feeling as the exterior materials and therefore increases the inside-out effect,” continues Mr Pastrovich. “The owner likes this effect so much that in the day-today life on board LifeSaga, the sliding Japanese doors between the forward dining room and aft saloon are rarely closed.”

‘Heavy’ Refit vs… The wheelhouse also received considerable attention, the results of which are plain to see. “Wheelhouses should be designed as a place for pilots, not a place for drinking champagne.” The addition of red LED lighting stems from Mr Pastrovich’s passion for aeroplanes. Red was the colour of choice because it is very gentle to the human eye, making it the most practical for navigational purposes. “Red is also a sexy

colour,” says Mr Pastrovich passionately. He is also very enthusiastic about the wheelhouse’s new console. “It is incredible, amazing: It is part of me,” he says about the one-piece black carbon fibre installation that gives the area the atmosphere of a high-tech control room – the nerve centre of a modern superyacht bristling with technological innovations. “A very important decision in planning a refit is to understand the boundaries,” explains Mr Pastrovich. Such limitations can be financial as well as structural. “If you spend most of your time in the main saloon, then it is logical to spend the most money in the main saloon. I gave the wheelhouse and the main saloon a ‘heavy’ refit.” The Jaguar lounge, on the other hand, received a ‘medium’ refit. Here, the ‘Wow’ effect is created by using an elaborate mix of fabrics, photos, marble, loose furniture and lighting effects.

…‘Light’ refit The strategy for the rest of the yacht followed this principle. “High-budget reconstructive work was not always necessary, or even possible, in all areas of the vessel,” informs Mr Pastrovich. Take the master cabin as an example. Here, it was not possible to perform a ‘heavy’ refit as the principle layout had to remain unchanged. However, an amazing transformation where the feeling of space was increased tenfold was accomplished by changing a few key colours and materials. “It’s all about matching colours,” continues Mr Pastrovich whilst defining a ‘light’ refit. “The master cabin is now lighter and fresher.” The result attained in the master bathroom is also striking – “achieved by

minimal, but crucial, changes such as new sinks and matching marbles.” Upon entering their cabins, guests on board the LifeSaga will experience the same effect, where the owner’s wishes have been carried out to his desire. This was not the first time that Mr Pastrovich has executed an interior design refit for this particular owner – the superyacht support vessel Shadow has also received a restyling from the Pastrovich brush. Throughout the design process for the LifeSaga refit, Mr Pastrovich had close contact with the yacht’s owner – another key issue in achieving a successful result. “We share similar interests, philosophies and the love of hightech.” This rapport was the foundation for the honest relationship the two men had concerning the budgeting of the whole project. “The LifeSaga was a big refit, but for the money spent, we achieved a great result. It’s not a question of just selling so the invoice can be sent.” The collaboration between them is not over yet – this summer will see the launch of a new build that is set to spark the interests of superyacht aficionados the world over. Watch this space for more details in the future.

Before Endless Possibilities of Design Stefano Pastrovich’s favourite technological development has yet to reach the commercial market. He is looking forward to the next big thing in infotainment – flexible flatscreen films. This technology is just around the corner and is set to be the next big step in interior design. Instead of adapting a wall to fit the TV, the new flexible screens can be positioned literally anywhere. “Imagine projecting the surface of the sea on to the ceiling! Imagine the Lifesaga’s curved Japanese door as a screen!” says Mr Pastrovich. “There will be endless possibilities – especially with the 3D versions.”

IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

Sleek Symbiosis

DESCRIBED AS A YACHT THAT TOTALLY CONNECTS WITH HER ENVIRONMENT, THIS 80M COLLABORATIVE DESIGN FROM ROYAL HUISMAN AND ANDREW WINCH DESIGNS IS INSPIRED BY THE NATURAL WORLD AND developed to work in unity with it. Via application of energy efficient, performance enhanced technology, this yacht aims to deliver a package combining beauty, luxury and functionality. The name of the design, Dart, suggests harmony between the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic – refined for its passage through water, as a dart is through the air. Some yachts present an image that contrasts with their environment – Dart celebrates the marine world and aims to come closer to it. The inspiration for her appearance is especially influenced by whales and dolphins. The arc of Dart’s profile is intended as a representation of a www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

leaping dolphin, the long bow evokes the sleekness of its body in the water and the mast suggests the dorsal fin. A glazed, sculptured chine above the waterline brings in reflections of ocean light and a window on the sea.

Beautiful Practicality The fine bow and elegantly sloping stern would be aesthetic luxuries on a smaller yacht, but with Dart there is space for beauty and amenity. One example is the artful concealment, beneath the foredeck, of two large tenders. Whilst their strategic location minimises the aesthetic impact, the tenders provide fast, safe, weather protected storage for shore-going transport.

Sea Views The Dart design also travels a different direction with regards to the ambience she presents. Instead of a premium urban apartment feel, Dart suggests a shore-side boutique hotel. For example, the beach deck and pool offer a sense of oneness with the surrounding waters. The terraced aft deck steps down to the water’s edge and the 5.5m infinity pool

offers a seamless outlook over the ocean. Above, on the main aft deck, fold-out balconies allow uninterrupted views from the exterior dining area and lounge, enabling those on board to feel a part of the landscape. Similarly, the main deck, which includes the main saloon, formal dining area and a VIP suite looks out to sea through full-height windows. The main deck is connected to the upper deck via a spiral staircase, where a spacious saloon, again with full-height windows, creates an open and light area perfect for taking in the surrounds. The sun deck features a Jacuzzi, bar and lounge area. The full beam master suite boasts ‘his and hers’ bathroom/dressing rooms and large windows to port and starboard. Six luxurious guest suites are located on the lower deck, each with a private bathroom and full length, waterline windows. Also on the lower deck are a cinema, a beach club, spa and gym, all linked to the aft deck and pool.

Not Just a Pretty Face Dart demonstrates a genuine commitment to reduce environmental impact. One way this is acheived is via weight reduction for increased fuel efficiency. The design features an ‘Alustar’ aluminium hull, and 40 percent weight reduction in all glass content courtesy of ultra thin, curved panels. It is envisaged that Dart would be driven

by dual azimuthing thrusters, powered by two MTU 16V200 engines with a diesel-electric propulsion system doing away with the weight of a stern thruster. Advanced installation techniques, featuring rockwool and glasswool are to be applied to the hull and a heat-reflecting film is incorporated into all glass. Energy efficient lighting will be applied throughout and smart energy management technology will automatically allocate power in the most efficient manner.

Fringe Benefits

reduced vibration and noise. The construction process throughout the yacht also focuses on reduced sound and vibration. Low maintenance is also a by-product – the glass envisaged by the design, for example, incorporates nanotechnologies that eliminate the need for cleaning. The microturbines require servicing only every 8,000 hours in contrast to their diesel equivalents’ 250-500 hours need.

i. www.royalhuisman.com i. www.andrew-winch-designs.co.uk

Such measures also enable an increase in lifestyle benefits. For example, one measure aimed at weight reduction is the replacement of diesel turbines with micro-turbine power generation, delivering the added advantage of

Innovations Microturbine Generators

Already well established in jet aviation, microturbines naturally complement the superyacht industry’s power generation demands – they’re quiet, vibration-free, reliable, lowmaintenance and clean. Microturbine Marine Energy (MME) has previously supplied Capstone microturbine technology to Royal Huisman’s Lethantia – the first yacht to run with an MME generator. The microturbine has just one moving part supported by patented air bearings; there are no lubricants or coolants to maintain. Stateof-the-art electronics convert the high frequency power into useful 400VAC@50Hz three-phase output for AC applications.

Alustar Hull A major factor in Dart’s relative low weight is her Alustar hull. The Netherlands-based Hamel Metaal is a preferred supplier of Alustar to the maritime industry. The alloy is renowned for an improved resistance to fatigue and corrosion and for maintaining its great strength after welding. Royal Huisman was the first yacht builder to adopt Alustar as its sole hull building material. In 1999 Pamina became the first ever yacht built of the lightweight material.

Diesel-Electric Propulsion Dart’s two MTU 16V2000 engines generate a total of 2,880kW for the versatile and efficient diesel-electric propulsion set-up, delivering a maximum speed of 19 knots. Alewijnse Marine Systems will provide the main switchboards, providing power management for two azimuthing thrusters and a 300kW bow thruster. Among many other advantages, the azimuthing thrusters do away with the requirement and thus the additional weight and cost of a stern thruster.

REFIT OF THE HIGHLANDER FEADSHIP

A-List Show-Stopper THE ICONIC FEADSHIP THE HIGHLANDER WAS LAUNCHED IN 1986 AND MADE ESPECIALLY FOR MALCOLM FORBES. NOW, 28 YEARS LATER SHE IS STILL one of the best-known symbols of big business. The green-hulled 49.5m Feadship was recently purchased by new owners and has been comprehensively refitted by Derecktor, fully respecting the groundbreaking exterior lines of her legendary designer Jon Bannenberg. The new and improved celebrity was finally re-launched in January and delivered to her new owners in February. WORDS BY ANOESHKA MAASKANT

T

he steel-hull Highlander still features the same dark green colour for which she has always been known. Legend has it that Malcolm Forbes engaged Jon Bannenberg to paint his yacht green, similar to the Feadship Azteca. The yacht’s profile however is slightly changed; the refit included an overall lengthening to 49.5m with a 3.7m stern extension. An Opacmare Transformer creates a contemporary transom. On top of that the top deck has also been extended forward for al fresco relaxation. The yard replaced a significant amount of shell plating while extending the hull and the owners and their design team softened her lines with some deft touches. All resulting in a stunning blend of the original Bannenburg perception with more contemporary features from Joanne de Guardiola Design, making the yacht look both classic and modern at the same

time. “This project has been a great collaboration between the owners, their design team and the shipyard,” said Derecktor’s Project Manager Jack Schneider. “It is very rewarding to see an older vessel of historical significance restored to her former glory.”

All in the Family Highlander remained in the Forbes family for over a quarter of a century – the glitter and glamour is written all over the yacht. From Liz Taylor, Robert De Niro and Harrison Ford to Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. Name any one of the eighties superstars and they were on the guest list. With long-range cruising destinations such as China, Alaska and Bora Bora, it is safe to say that she lived up to her reputation as a glamorous show-stopper. When the simultaneously classic and modern yacht was finally offered for sale, it was clear that Mr Bannenberg’s design had lost none

The guest lists for The Highlander read like a who’s who of the world’s glamorous movie stars and heads of state.

of her attraction, according to the owners. “We are very big fans of Feadship,” they explained. “The new exterior profile follows Bannenberg’s strong lines and it shows how far ahead of his time he was in the early 1980s. The Highlander has the personality of Malcolm Forbes and Bannenberg, we believe there is a seamless transition between the original and the new.”

Best of Both Worlds Fast forward a few decades and fans of the late Mr Bannenberg and Feadship will be impressed with the way the owners used Mr Bannenberg’s angular lines to modernise Highlander’s profile. They adjusted her space for use by their family and charter guests instead of the A-list superstars in the eighties. The new interior opens up spaces to play to the strengths of Highlander and changes her from a corporate entertainment boat to a yacht for private use. The entire main deck was stripped back, entire floors, ceilings, and walls were removed and clean contemporary white angire and dark wenge interiors were installed. The new master stateroom is forward with two new master bathrooms. To complete the refit, high-technology systems were added, like the Quantum zero-speed stabilisers, an all-new pilot house, extensive WiFi facilities and new audio/video system, the latest eco-friendly sewage system, LED lighting and new air-conditioning. custom-made cigarette boat, which is a classic Donzi, has been completely refitted and painted jet black with a swaggering bold red stripe. “We have changed the name to simply ‘Highlander’ because the visionary personalities of Malcolm Forbes and Jon Bannenberg are still very much alive on in this yacht,” concluded the owners. The Feadship Charter Division has become the central agent for charter bookings on the iconic Highlander, she is available for charter in the Mediterranean from April 2014 onwards.

n a statement in February, the Palumbo Group said that the Commercial Court of Marseille had declared Palumbo Group the winner of the tender for the acquisition of International Technic Marine in Marseille. The only other company tendering was the Maltese group Melita Marine, who withdrew their bid shortly before the court’s decision. On their first foray into France, the Palumbo Group thanked the city of Marseille for the warm welcome and stated it was “doing its best to get the shipyard fully operative, as in the past; as soon as possible.”

planned to invest in the facilities, buying new equipment and lifting systems in order to improve and increase the range of services to offer to its clients. The Palumbo Group has kept eight of the former managers and renamed the yard Palumbo Marseille Superyachts ITM. The Palumbo Group said its new yard would join its network of Palumbo Shipyards in the Mediterranean, adding refit expertise and acting as an additional aftersales point for the clients of Columbus Yachts, the group’s brand for its new build superyachts.

to superyacht refit and repair. The area supports a surrounding cluster of maritime suppliers and contractors, many of whom will be pleased to see the yard’s activities return to past performance. Palumbo Marseille Superyachts ITM covers an area of about 12,000m2 comprising four large dry docks ranging from 80 up to 126m, and more than 300m of quays for repairs afloat. Currently the yard has no dedicated cranes or significant lifting gear, however the group is likely to acquire lifting capacity comparable to its other yards. The Marseille yard features a giant ‘watershed’, which the local team described as “a pampering area for yachts and superyachts”. This giant covered and ventilated warehouse for vessels is equipped with scaffoldings, lights, firefighting and security up to ISPS code. With water dimensions of 94 x 20m and nearly 25m air draught, the watershed makes working day and night possible in top conditions to deliver high quality and precise results without requiring full dry-docking.

Palumbo Network Founded in 1967, the Palumbo Group started its activity in the ship repair field and now operates in construction, refit, repair and maintenance of every type of vessel in its five shipyards in Naples, Messina, Malta and now Marseille. During the last few years, the group has been expanding its core business, through the creation of a platform in the heart of the Mediterranean, building a network in the ship repair industry, in the offshore sector and in the yachting sector. “Such a logistical platform has the technical and timing ability required to satisfy any owner’s demands, providing them, at the same time, with the widest and most complete range of services,” the group stated. The group also noted its investments in building its employee capability, reaching a very high professional level of its technical staff. By formally obtaining ISO 9001 certification and the OHSAS 18001, the health and safety management system certification, the Palumbo Group is even more competitive and able to show its improved service levels, with faster turnaround times. With the acquisition of Palumbo Marseille Superyachts ITM, the Palumbo Group manages an extended platform comprising fourteen drydocks (six of them fully dedicated to superyachts) ranging from 40m up to maximum

360m in length, more than one kilometer of quays and an operational area covering about 520,000m2, offering a substantial range of products to the general maritime, ship repair and yachting sectors from its network of shipyards in the centre of Mediterranean.

ext month, Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum will set the stage for the gala evening that is the World Superyacht Awards. Representatives from the UK’s Oyster Yachts will be anticipating the outcome of one award in particular: the 30-40m sailing yacht category, for which Twilight is a nominee.

First Flybridge Twilight is an Oyster 125 that was built in collaboration with Dubois design as the first flybridge sailing yacht of such a small length. The concept was to build a superyacht that could carry superyacht luxury and style yet still be capable of being built as a production yacht; with the production efficiency that that entails. One of the most interesting features of Twilight is her flybridge – with seating for ten, the flybridge area offers spectacular views from high above the water and is the ideal spot to enjoy the sailing or relax with a cocktail and watch the sunset. Flybridge sailing yachts are still a relatively new concept and, until Twilight, were only to be found on yachts longer than 48m. The Dubois team has been able to finesse Twilight’s design to capture all the benefits of this concept and match them within a wellbalanced, good-looking profile.

Production Advantages With a view to series production, Oyster Marine brought together one of the best teams of designers, engineers and consultants to research every aspect of the overall design concept, structural specification, engineering and interior design. This significant investment has created a truly class leading superyacht – the first of which is Twilight. Her 180t construction is composite, with a hull and deck made from resin-infused layup glass reinforced plastic that incorporates kevlar and carbon. Her outer hull laminate is infused vinylester resin. Twilight, and future members of the Oyster 125 stable, signifies a considerable investment for the construction yard too. RMK Marine built a new 80 x 40m fabrication hall that houses a 480m2 high temperature post cure oven capable of operating at 130°C and believed to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe. RMK Marine is an established shipyard facility that, in addition to commercial vessels, has built a number of large motor yachts and has now entered the large sailing yacht market. RMK is part of Turkey’s largest company – the Koç Group – and so in financial terms is one of the strongest shipyards in the industry. The production process utilised with Twilight yields a number of advantages, both external

A Feeling of Space Twilight’s composite construction generates internal benefits too. Contrary to an alloy yacht that requires substantial hull and deck support framework throughout the vessel’s entire length that in turn significantly reduces the living space, Twilight thinks outside the box when it comes to internal space. Her composite structure does not require such a framework and as such offers approximately 10 percent more accommodation volume. Every Sailor’s Dream More Oyster yachts have completed a world circumnavigation than from any other builder. This absolute pedigree of Oyster’s fleet can be seen just by looking at the first ever Oyster World Rally, which saw 28 examples of the Oyster range set off from Antigua in January last year. “It is every sailors dream to sail around the world,” said Oyster CEO David Tydeman. “I am sure that the Oyster World Rally will capture the hearts and imagination of sailors the world over.” 16 months on, the adventure is due to come to an end this month when the fleet rendezvous back in the Caribbean. The grand finale will see the Oyster Regata Antigua where as many as 50 Oyster yachts, representing the largest gathering in the company’s 40 year history, are to congregate to celebrate the end of the World Rally. “It is going to be very emotional,” Oyster World Rally Project Manager Debbie Johnson commented. “Over the last few days I have been collating the photographs from the rally and it is amazing to see how far these people have come.”

EXPERT CRAFTSMEN RECREATE 1930S TEAK FURNITURE

In Keeping with Tradition CRAFTSMEN OF THE HIGHEST ORDER ARE CURRENTLY RESTORING THE CLASSIC 64M MOTOR YACHT SHEMARA TO HER FORMER glory. For local firm Fairlie Yachts, this was is a chance to show off its skills and workmanship. SuperYacht Industry’s Tom Scott takes an admiring look at their contribution to the project – bespoke teak deck furniture. WORDS BY TOM SCOTT

Steeped in maritime history, the area around Southampton and Portsmouth in the UK is home to a yachtbuilding infrastructure that has been passed down from generation to generation. The 1938-built Shemara too has a rich and colourful history – the latest chapter involving her refit at Burgess Marine’s Portchester yard where she is currently receiving extensive refit and repair works that are due for completion later this year.

We are ideally placed to recapture the style and emotion of the golden age in yachting.

The project signifies a significant step forward for a number of independent superyacht specialists – amongst whom is Southampton-based Fairlie yachts. Fairlie specialise in building modern classic yachts that recapture the style and emotion of a golden age in yachting. Designed and built to order, their yachts demonstrate the decades of experience behind the Fairlie build quality and exquisite finishing. For the Shemara project, Fairlie craftsmen are currently recreating exquisite pieces of furniture destined for her deck. Built in teak and finished to the highest standards, the items include weather-deck doors, intricately designed deck furniture, teak ladders and teak boxes for storage. “This experience has enabled us to reproduce that elegance and style in our spirit of tradition yachts,” commented Fairlie Yachts Managing Director Duncan Walker. The design of the items is in keeping with the classic 1930s style of the era. The accompanying images illustrate the skill and workmanship behind each of these bespoke items.

A HI-TECH MULTIMEDIA EXPERIENCE

Devoted to

ENTERTAINMENT THE OWNERS OF A NEW 47M SAILING YACHT UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT A DUTCH SUPERYACHT YARD HAD VERY CLEAR EXPECTATIONS FOR THEIR CUSTOM ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM. COMBINING EXCLUSIVITY, performance and respect for design, the skilled craftsmen at TAV Systems – a subsidiary of Tijssen Elektro – rose to the challenge. This was the latest in a long line of projects for the company. Eddy Huisman, General Manager Engineering of Tijssen Elektro discussed the fast-moving field with SuperYacht Industry’s Anoeshka Maaskant. 4 0 | S Y I  2 0 1 4 | Vo l u m e 9 | Issue 1

he Netherlands-based Tijssen Elektro supplies and installs integrated electrical systems. For 40 years now, their specialists have navigated the world of alarm and monitoring, integrated navcomms and audio-video (AV) systems for a wide-ranging maritime market – including superyachts. But as today’s superyacht industry is more and more about luxurious, high performance and beautifully designed custom multimedia applications, Tijssen Elektro wanted to set up an independent company to specialise exclusively on the superyacht AV segment. No sooner said than done, in 2013 TAV Systems was born. Working on refits as well as new build superyachts in the range of 25 to 65m, the young independent company is exclusively dedicated to the growing field of AV and marine electronics.

AV on Demand Today’s superyachts require exclusive AV systems, perfectly integrating the latest must-haves in the field of marine entertainment and the burgeoning infotainment market. TAV Systems supplies and installs such systems, whether stand-alone or fully integrated. With their wide range of equipment, they can provide all applications to meet owner requirements. With a personalised, exclusive system, every area in a yacht has access to streaming video and music on demand. Eddy Huisman commented, “Via independent multimedia stations and super-speed Ethernet connections, each individual cabin has access to the centrally located entertainment library.” To complete the service additional music and movies like DVDs or Blu-Rays can be stored to the facility as desired and there is the possibility to integrate additional servers to the system for increased capacity. To make it an all-round experience, all systems including TV, multimedia stations, HD LED TV screen and radio are connected to the amplifier. In every cabin of the yacht, guests can lie back and enjoy the music through custom-made, built-in ceiling loudspeakers. All this is made possible because the entertainment library connects to the HD multimedia stations via a local area network (LAN).

Eddy Huisman, General Manager Engineering of Tijssen Elektro.

Internet & Satellite TV/Radio “These days there is nothing more important than having an Internet connection at all times,” noticed Mr Huisman. “That is why TAV Systems installs a permanent, high-speed Internet connection with www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

unlimited access throughout the yacht.” In fact, the onboard LAN connects to the yacht’s satellite communication system and gives all guests and crew comprehensive high-speed Internet access.

All of this works through the fixed data outlets and wireless access points, distributed throughout the yacht. For guests to enjoy the TV and radio, the satellite receiver connection – which can switch between EU and US receivers – provides access via a signal distribution system and the shipboard LAN network. This way there is continuous access to the ‘free-to-air’ channels. To complete the technology package and to fully experience the value of high quality television, there is the option to add a dedicated satellite receiver in order to subscribe to exclusive encrypted channels.

Intuitive Controls With just one click on the WiFi tablet controller, a superyacht guest has access to the full multimedia experience. The exclusive controller is available in a wide range of models and sizes to meet the owners’ demands. To ensure userfriendly high-end control there is a specially developed, easy-to-use user interface aimed at providing all-inclusive technology. Even the programming of the custom-made system is straightforward and intuitive, enabling guests and children to use the controls and enjoy the entertainment system with no prior training.

opportunities, courtesy of a broad selection of equipment such as top-notch speakers, amplifiers and TV screens – including diverse LED televisions in various sizes and designs all for the owners’ benefit. And when you think you have seen it all, there is also the possibility to incorporate projectors into the AV system. “Over the years we’ve noticed that the incorporation of a TV lift system is becoming a regular feature on our customisation projects,” said Mr Huisman. “This ranges from standard in-wall installations to the ceiling or sometimes we even implement rotating lift systems, this totally depends upon the space that is available in the yacht and the specific quality requirements.” To make the best fit possible, TAV Systems works in close cooperation with the shipyard responsible for the build – particularly when it comes to fitting TV lift systems. Another important feature that needs to be customised is the programming. Mr Huisman said: “When we need to adjust the programming we always send out a fully trained engineer, whether we need to programme the tablet controllers or the operational system additional to the AV. Because there is a lot we have to regulate according to the specific requirements of the owner, such as personal light management, blind operation options, heating systems or crew calls.”

department will take care of any maintenance or enhancement requirements for the AV system. According to Mr Huisman, the aftersales care can be carried out alongside aftersales that will be provided for other Tijssen Elektro systems on board, such as electrical, MPA, navigation and communication systems. “Our highly trained engineers operate internationally, so they will only be one call away,” Mr Huisman mentioned. “Trained to carry out maintenance and service requirements, they can add special functions to all systems within the Tijssen Elektro range whenever necessary.”

The Consortium “To use all our knowledge just within Tijssen Elektro and TAV Systems would be a shame,” said Mr Huisman. “That is why Tijssen Elektro and TAV Systems have teamed up with fellow Dutch company Aage Hempel and Spain-based e3, to form a all-embracing partnership billed as The Consortium.” The partnership aims to provide a new build and exclusive service that spans the entire lifecycle of a yacht.

LANTIC’S ENTERTAINMENT CONTENT SERVICE

Lantic Entertainment Systems recently introduced a new audiovisual service. The entertainment content service regularly delivers movies and music directly to yachts for fast and easy upload into their Lantic media servers. Lantic has negotiated an annual, pan-industry, non-theatrical license (valid across all flag states) that removes all playback restrictions for content that is played on board private yachts. The content is delivered direct to the yacht loaded

on a USB hard drive and from there it is a simple matter of connecting the drive to the Lantic media server and leaving it to upload the new content. Once this is completed, exploring and selecting the films is simplicity itself via Lantic’s renowned user interface. Lantic is offering a range of packages from 100 to 1,000 movies, together with the optional update service.

PLEJD’S AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Plejd system is developed in response to the ongoing hi-tech vs lo-tech debate: have systems become overly complex, at the risk of spoiling the owner’s enjoyment? Plejd’s technology automated all manual options. The outcome is an easy to install system that is reliable and offers unique control possibilities. The system features a consistent interface that automatically generates and adapts to any device. It can track

the indoor physical location, this way the content follows around automatically. The interactive state allows each user to save preferred settings for different situations, such as watching a movie or working out. In addition each user has the possibility to customise the interface to measure up to their wishes.

METALLIC PAINTS EMPHASISE THE CURVES

The Italian Paint Job THE USE OF METALLIC PAINT IN THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY SEEMS TO BE A PERFECT MATCH, YET IT IS STILL A RELATIVELY NEW TECHNOLOGY. THE Italian paint company Lechler is drawing on its broad experience in the automotive industry to further yacht painting expertise. Editor Tom Scott dissects Lechler’s case study concerning the Mondo Marine-built Auspicious after her refit last year. WORDS BY TOM SCOTT PHOTO COURTESY OF LECHLER

hen the contours of a structure need to be revealed, metallic paint does the job. It emphasises a superyacht’s flowing hull lines and sumptuous superstructure curves. This is due to the fact that metallic paints contain small metal flakes that create shimmering effects on their surfaces. Naval architects can therefore use this principle to their advantage – to utilise metallic paint to accentuate the shimmering effects that are so pleasing to the eye.

Measuring the Bling Lechler, the long established Italian coatings company, is making a start in collecting relevant data to obtain an objective database to improve the use of metallic paints in the superyacht industry. For decades, it has been common practice for the automotive industry to use

metallic paints. As such, there are strict qualitative standards of application parameters. Methods of analysis are in place to ensure the compliance of defined quality standards. To transfer this knowledge and experience of paint application to the superyacht industry would be unrealistic since the application is completely manual and the impact of environmental variables, such as temperature and humidity, is a significant factor in the quality of result. Measurement techniques from the car industry are applicable, however. Lechler’s case study used the established methods to determine the Distinctness of Image (DOI) and Dullness (Du) values. DOI represents both the clearness of the reflected image and the shine. The closer this value is to 100, the higher surface quality is observed. This is also known as the ‘orange

last year when she received a new, metallic, hull and superstructure coating. By knowing the areas to be submitted for analysis, any additional measurements can be taken at the correct location. Prior to application of the paint, a pre-test area was chosen on the upper deck to act as a reference point for comparative assessment by the site manager. The Auspicious was then painted, albeit under difficult environmental conditions – it was 35°C that day. Such high temperatures made the paint application process difficult as increased paint fume levels resulted in overspray. Lechler’s results showed that on all but one position on the vessel, the measured dullness value was less than 20 (one point measured 24.1). This is clearly within the car industry’s high standards of between 15 and 30du. These

peel’ of a surface. The Du indicates the amount of diffused light due to structures less than 0.13 mm. The lower the amount of diffused light, the smaller the value, and therefore the smoother the appearance of the surface. Historical data obtained from the automotive industry shows that car manufacturers achieve metallic finishes of between 15 and 30 of Du.

values will only improve upon final application of a layer of varnish The DOI measurements illustrated a smooth finish, with readings between 70 and 80 being measured – sufficiently close to the maximum of 100. All in all, the overall results were considered to be thoroughly acceptable considering the conditions of application such as large surface area of the yacht, high temperature and low visibility due to overspray. The Auspicious has been transformed into a shimmering vision.

Application Day The case study involved the precise mapping of the external surfaces of the Auspicious (formerly Streamline). This 50m motor yacht was built in 2009 by Mondo Marine – she underwent a refit

Terry van Velzen, the new Director of VBH.

KEEPING PACE WITH USERS’ EXPECTATIONS

Developing Technologies RISING TRENDS IN BOTH AUDIO-VISUAL (AV) TECHNOLOGIES AND THE WAY THAT THEY ARE FITTED ARE PRESENTING YARDS WITH NEW CHALLENGES WHEN IT COMES TO INSTALLING or upgrading AV systems. Changing preferences among owners are certainly having an impact on the installation of AV. Van Berge Henegouwen Installaties (VBH) noticed ‘more of everything’ is the trend for 2014.

BH is specialised in the field of entertainment, IT, communication, security and control systems on board of superyachts. Since today’s yachts carry ever more devices, the demand for more AV systems continues to grow. Recently Imtech Marine (of which VBH is a member) appointed Terry van Velzen as the new Director of VBH to pursue technical innovations. Mr Van Velzen mentioned: “At VBH we combine our knowledge of state-of-the-art solutions with continuous research into the latest technology and a dedicated customer-focus approach.” With its wide portfolio, VBH contributes to the varied portfolio of systems and services they offer superyacht customers for new build or refit projects.

More of Everything One of the biggest trends at the moment according to VBH is to incorporate ‘more of everything’ into the superyacht. That is; more definition, more bandwidth and more availability. For example, 4K resolution screens with their ultra-sharp images are taking off in popularity in a way that 3D never managed. More detail means more data, and for most yachts that are planning to install the new monitors that will mean needing to upgrade their cabling to high5 2 | S Y I  2 0 1 4 | Vo l u m e 9 | Issue 1

Galactica Star’s high-end AV systems.

capacity fibre-optic. Even those yachts that are happy with standard HD monitors should consider selecting high capacity cabling as it will make future upgrades possible without the major disruption of running new cables throughout the vessel.

24/7 Accessibility The demand for more internet bandwidth also continues to grow dramatically, carrying more devices capable of streaming HD content from the web. For experienced integrators there are a number of tools available for optimising bandwidth and VBH recommends that project managers take advantage of refits to install a bandwidth management system. These take up little space and deliver good results. For maximum efficiency, different scenarios depending on who’s on board can be designed and implemented. Owners’ WiFi requirements are also expanding, in terms of both bandwidth and coverage. This is driven by the ubiquity of smart phones and tablets, and the fact that these are increasingly used as the control interfaces for many onboard systems. Localised Hotspots are no longer www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Van Berge Henegouwen.indd 53

enough, total yacht-wide coverage is becoming the norm, requiring redesigned systems. By happy coincidence the new 802.11ac WiFi standard has also just been approved, potentially offering gigabit speed wireless connections. Together these factors provide both motive and opportunity for the upgrading of the onboard WiFi network. The actual specification will depend on how the system is used, and your system integrator will advise accordingly.

Hidden Sound Another big trend at the moment is the request for hidden built-in systems at yachts, where equipment like speakers and amplifiers are no longer on show but hidden within walls or ceilings. Hiding large speakers can present particular challenges when it comes to freeing up the available space in competition with other services like air conditioning and lighting. An experienced integrator can advise on which parts of the existing system may no longer be needed and can be removed to release additional volume. The fitting of amplifiers in

enclosed spaces also has heat-dispersal implications and tightly packed units may require dedicated cooling. These issues can always be resolved, but they do reinforce the message that yards and their interior designers / installers should get together with their AV integrators as early as possible in a project to avoid possible issues later on. So, when planning a new AV installation it pays to think ahead. The ways in which data and entertainment content can be received and enjoyed are advancing all the time. A system with the flexibility and capacity to adapt to and assimilate those changes will allow the implementation of quick, incremental upgrades rather than the disruption and expense of having to start all over again every few years.
