EDITOR’S NOTE

Back at the helm

American writers Harper Lee, Sylvia Plath and Margaret Mitchell are all best-selling authors who took long hiatuses following the release of their famous novels. While my three-year break as Editor of SuperYacht Industry pales in comparison to Harper Lee’s mammoth 55-year gap between writing her 1960 classic To Kill a Mockingbird and her 2014 work of fction Go Set a Watchman, it certainly feels good to be back at the helm of one of yachting’s leading industry publications.

Issue 3 drops during the month of September, which can only mean one thing – it’s boat show season! We kick of our Monaco Yacht Show edition by taking a tour of the impressive lineup of yachts, exhibitors and industry areas coming to Port Hercules for the largest event in the yachting calendar. That includes the Sustainability Hub, which returns for a second year, and the mighty 90m Kismet, the largest yacht on display for 2023 (page 8).

We feature two incredible yacht reports this issue that span the years. The 59m Marala brings classic lines to the 21st century following its comprehensive reft at British yard Pendennis. Built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1931, Marala tells a fascinating story of 1930s elegance and old world glamour (page 14). Bringing us up to the present day is 47m Nilaya, the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length and the frst sailing yacht to feature Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight design and production method (page 18).

We also drop by the Viken Group to look around Tillberg Design of Sweden’s 60m expedition yacht Mimer on page 42. And we shine a light on the shipbuilding hub of Turkey. Bilgin Yachts pushes to the fore with three distinctive series (page 38), specialist project management company Eureka Yachts makes a move into Dutch territories (page 12) and Septemar brings game changing engineering, design and production to yachting (page 22).

For owners with a sof spot for heritage, Benetti celebrates 150 years of Italian shipbuilding success this year. As the largest shipyard in the Mediterranean, its Livorno facility continues to produce innovative superyachts, including 50m Alunya, the second hull in Benetti’s 50m B.Now Oasis Deck making its debut at Monaco. We walk through Heesen’s three latest projects –Sparta, Venus and Serena on page 30 – and we celebrate Lusben’s reft of the epic 88m Maltese Falcon (page 34).

Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at Monaco, Fort Lauderdale or another boat show soon!

Specialising in project management within the yacht building industry, including new build projects up to 80m, large refts and conversions, Istanbulbased Eureka Yachts is moving in on The Netherlands. Founded in 2021 by four naval architects, the Turkish company has a combined experience of more than 50 years in the superyacht industry. In 2023, it announced its new Dutch division, with the aim of making it the new company headquarters.

The move comes in the wake of another successful Dutch project for the young company, which has prompted it to strengthen its commitment to the Dutch yachting sector. The company is profcient in both yacht refts and new builds for all types of vessels – motor yachts, sailing yachts and yacht support vessels. The company’s largest completed projects to date include Project EY018, a 44.3m Hydrotec 289 for which it carried out structural engineering, and Project EY003, a 23.3m Bering yacht for which it carried out class level design, piping engineering and outftting engineering.

Eureka Yachts’ expertise in project management, design and engineering, as well as budgeting and planning has proven efective for shipyards and owners

throughout the world. With the new European afliate, Eureka Yachts can contribute to a fully European designed, engineered and built yacht with a new Dutch team joining the organisation.

Independent working

Working fully independently without ties to any individual shipyard gives Eureka Yachts the freedom to advise and guide clients on key decisions without bias or preference. When determining costs, timescales and build quality at all stages throughout the production process, impartial choices are made without prejudice.

“We believe that clear and open communication with clients and efcient planning is the key to success,” says cofounding partner Umut Özdemir. “Using our powerful platforms, we make it easy for our clients to keep track of progress. We use a high technology cloud-based sofware system that provides an accurate percentage of completion with detailed explanations at every stage ensuring efcient and secure collaboration.”

from initial concept, hull design and 3D modelling to computational fuid dynamics, hull form optimisation and preparing all necessary classifcation society and fag authority documents.

The team uses the latest technologies of sofware working on database platform which allows ease of communication with a shipyards ERP system. This brings all disciplines of engineering into a single platform, including piping, construction and structural analysis with FEA. It ensures the Eureka Yachts team can work seamlessly within industry specifc standards and rules.

“We provide project management and representation for owners and shipyards at all levels and stages,” says co-founding partner Sadik Özüm. “Prior to the project commencing, we discuss all client requirements to ensure we fully understand every aspect of the brief. Our goal with every project that we undertake is to deliver exceptional quality control, keep within budget and manage timescales efectively and efciently. PENDENNIS IS AT THE TOP OF ITS REFIT GAME

Marala

The 59m classic motor yacht Marala is one of few surviving yachts from her era. Built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1931, she tells a fascinating story of 1930s elegance, German U-boats and Hollywood glamour.

Due to her unusually few owners during her lifetime, Marala’s character, layout and original engines have been preserved over time. That withstanding, modifcations have been made to her superstructure and interior throughout her life, most notably when she was converted for naval service during World War II. Following an extensive reft in 2019 at British shipyard

Pendennis, she now pairs authentic elegance with contemporary machinery.

Beloved by several notable owners and host to distinguished guests, including Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra, and royalty, Marala is now a historical icon infused with character. In 2016, she came onto the market for the frst time in over 50 years and her new owner embarked on a meticulous restoration.

Restorative power

Marala arrived at Pendennis to complete her historic restoration in mid-August 2019 aboard a yacht transport ship direct from Malta where the project had started. The Captain and crew had already stripped out the yacht’s interior and begun engineering works.

“Marala’s new owner recognised the rare opportunity to own a Camper & Nicholsons classic motor yacht but understood that her essential structural requirements would impact her interior, meaning it would be wise to address engineering updates at the same time,” says the captain of Marala. “With a determination to remain sympathetic to her heritage and original design, the decision was made to bring the yacht to Pendennis to complete a restoration and preserve her spirit for many years to come.”

The yacht was taken straight to Pendennis’ inner dry dock where she stayed for the next two and a half years to undergo a Lloyd’s special survey, and to investigate her steel hull and superstructure. A signifcant number of areas that needed urgent attention were quickly identifed, and a comprehensive programme of fabrication, blasting and repainting commenced that resulted in the renewal of over 100 tonnes of steel, predominantly on her hull. The decision was taken to leave the hull un-faired, providing an authentic look synonymous with her heritage.

In conjunction with this activity, it was also vital for the Pendennis team to fnalise the technical specifcation for the new systems and calculate the net space on board to sign of the yacht’s new interior with Muza Lab.

Speccing the tech

Other key external modifcations included the removal of the exterior hard topped shelter and tender storage on the owner’s af deck to make way for an external entertainments area comprising a cinema and Jacuzzi. The owner was also keen to restore the yacht’s 1930s aesthetic, removing the bulwarks and side deck structures that had been added in the 1950s and 60s. >>

WERKVREUGDE is made up of a team of skilled professionals with extensive experience in stainless steel for the Superyacht building industry. They are one of the largest companies in the Netherlands specialised in the design and manufacture of stainless-steel yacht equipment. The company distinguishes itself by their traditional working methods, the time, care, and attention they invest in their products. This, in combination with modern machinery and the latest digital measurements and design techniques, ensures the highest possible standard of stainless-steel quality. The company’s design department can turn each sketch or idea into a three-dimensional representation.

MARRON JACHTBOUW has a longstanding experience with teak for the yachting industry. Gradually, they discovered the wish and the need for alternative materials for teak.

In cooperation with Herculan Marine, EcoDeck was introduced in 2012. To stop human-induced deforestation, EcoDeck invented a nautical deck application that satisfes the highest standards in the yachting industry while reducing the impact on our environment.

EcoDeck® is a safe product according to SOLAS and IMO regulations. During its lifetime, EcoDeck® will maintain its properties and is easy to repair. The material is non-skid and easy to maintain at low costs. It is ecofriendly and is produced with renewed and solvent free resins. At the end of its life cycle, EcoDeck® can be recycled to be used in new products.

All machinery was replaced or restored, including the HVAC system, piping and ducting, cabling power and distribution, lighting and hardware, and electrical systems. Marala’s auxiliary generators were fully rebuilt and her emergency generator was replaced with an emergency battery system freeing up space on the upper decks. The full hydraulic and original manual steering systems also received a comprehensive rebuild, as did the original engines. The power train has been refurbished with an upgraded propulsion system.

World of interiors

London based design house Muza Lab was commissioned to bring a new look to the décor that both respects and celebrates the 1930s spirit of the vessel. Beginning with the original design spec and blueprints from the National Maritime Museum archives, the studio researched the yacht’s history to reference the heritage and character throughout the design. Elements that could be retained include much of the original timber, such as the authentically aged foorboards in the dining area and saloon.

The cabins take guests on a journey through Marala’s lifetime, with 1930s style waxed linen panels, nods to her military service and Savoy blue accents in homage to a former owner. The owner’s private area is rich with Art Deco glamour inspired by the 1930s ocean liner SS Normandie.

“In Marala’s 89 years of illustrious history, several performances have graced this grand dame’s stage, each with its own cast of curious characters,” says a spokesperson for Muza Labs. “It is this rich heritage, specifcally the times full of optimism and heady glamour, that we have sought to honour in our new design direction. Far from an interior restoration project, this has been about reinvigorating her 1930s spirit and preserving her aura for years to come. In Marala, we already had a diamond – it has been a case of repolishing it to reveal its brilliance.”

Marala departed the Falmouth in the UK for Pendennis’ Vilanova base in Grand Marina Barcelona in the Autumn of 2022, before delivering to her owner.

In February 2023, the 47m high-performance cruiser sloop Nilaya (meaning blissful home in Sanskrit) few the Royal Huisman nest. Her departure followed successful sea trials in the choppy North Sea, a private christening at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam and the subsequent delivery to her owners. Now cruising the world’s oceans following a successful maiden voyage to Spain, all eyes are on the Dutch shipyard’s anticipated Panamax – the frst sailing yacht to feature Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight design and production method.

Developed in-house, Royal Huisman says the new approach slashes around 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminium cruising yachts, therefore increasing performance and efciency. Heralded as the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length, she “rewrites the script for highperformance superyachts,” says Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman.

“For such a large yacht, the acceleration is exciting as she rapidly reaches high speeds,” says Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport who served as the owner’s project manager. “Twin rudders and the light, positive steering give superb manoeuvrability and she has reached all her project targets with ease. Rondal’s sailing systems enable fngertip control of the massive loads involved.”

Lightness of being

One of the key elements of the Reichel/Pugh Nauta 154 is that it is lighter than previous models without sacrifcing stifness or cutting corners on quality. Rather than a one-of construction technique, Royal Huisman’s Featherlight method defnes the yard’s holistic lightweight approach to yacht building in general, supported by numerous weight-saving solutions, such as aluminium and carbon fbre components.

“We are proud to have delivered another unique vessel, especially one that advances innovative engineering and build technology,” says Timmerman. “Nilaya is a milestone in composite superyachts in the truest sense of the word and another fne example of Royal Huisman’s ability to provide owners with the ultimate expression of personal freedom.”

Dual design

Italian studio Nauta Design penned the exterior and interior for what is the largest sailing yacht project that Nauta Design has worked on to date. The experienced owners are repeat clients of the renowned studio and were looking to upgrade from their existing 46m sailing yacht. The brief was for a fast, competitive sailer that delivers on comfort and reliability yet retains the spirit and feel of their previous boat, specifcally the deckhouse design. Silence, safety and space were also prerequisites.

Nauta’s design features a straight bow, wide transom and twin rudders. Inside, it elicits a calm and contemporary ambience. Whether enjoying world cruising or when on board for exciting regattas, the owners are in their element. Co-founder of Nauta Design, Mario Pedol, was aboard for the yacht’s sea trials, afer which he enthused “Nilaya is not good… she is superb.”

“We sailed on a broad reach with the mainsail and Code Zero and rapidly reached a truly impressive 17 knots boat speed,” says Pedol. “This fantastic yacht showed to really match all the quite

demanding main aspects of the owners’ brief. Her performance under sail is truly outstanding.”

Expertise at the ready

Pulling together experts in their feld, the owners enlisted American studio ReichelPugh to perfect the hull form, working alongside America’s Cup computational fuid dynamics (CFD) specialists Caponnetto Hueber and Giorgio Provinciali.

Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal delivered the carbon fbre mast and sail

rigging for the Doyle sail plan that features a radical new curved carbon fbre spreader design that is both shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available. It was also responsible for constructing the trunk of the keel, the coveted deckhouse, the guest cockpit and hardtop all from carbon composite.

“While the new Nilaya is meant to take the owners world cruising, they also asked for a boat with all the ‘good habits’ of their previous racer, meaning responsiveness and excellent handling,” says Ingram. “Royal Huisman was not afraid to invest

Interior introspection

Septemar brings game changing engineering, design and production to yachting.

Since its inception in 2008 by founder Korkut Seçkin, Septemar (meaning Seven Seas) has focused on delivering integrated solutions within yacht interiors, from design to production. By pairing design and engineering with the company philosophy for quality and on-schedule production, the Turkish company has accrued a growing collection of accolades and industry awards.

Septemar’s 5,000m2 factory includes a design and engineering space, furniture production facilities, and dedicated varnish, upholstery and assembly departments. Over the past 15 years, it has produced interiors for more than 30 yachts, sized between 30m to 80m. Its

skilled crafsmanship allows it to produce high-quality furniture with speed and precision. And its journey towards producing the most high-end interiors always begins with an in-depth technical design process.

Innovation focused production

In the world of yachting where everything changes and develops at a rapid pace, Septemar has adopted a courageous approach to try what hasn’t been tried before. By closely following innovations and developments within the sector, it continues to develop and invest in the production of yacht furniture technologies. This extends to a robust and

comprehensive production and project review process with its young management staf.

“Turkey has a well-established furniturebuilding culture, and we want to be a learning facility within its yacht building sector,” says Septemar founder Korkut Seçkin, who has 22 years’ experience in the yachting sector. “At Septemar, we aim to pull the sector upwards by continuing with the same enthusiasm that we had 15 years ago. The biggest reward is seeing the fnal product. When you deliver a yacht interior and see the client’s happiness and the excitement of the whole team, it produces great excitement and a huge sense of pride.”

Delicate crafsmanship and high quality

Septemar specialises in the deck and interior work for boats over 35m in length. Taking the boat from its skeleton form, it creates all living spaces, including the production of fxed and loose furniture, as well as fooring, marble and chrome works, therefore ofering customers a turnkey solution. “I very much enjoy what I do very much,” adds Seçkin. “Our work is more than manufacturing a commercial product, we make our customers’ dreams come true.”

One of its most recent projects is the fully reftted interior for classic 71m V2V (exCarinthia VI) delivered by Lürssen in 1973.

Septemar reproduced the complete interior living areas, including six guest suites and nine crew cabins.

In V2V’s guest cabins, special patterned maple wallpaper is used together with bleached oak veneer. Handcrafed artisanal elements are epitomised by curvilinear joints in the cabins and pattern tracking – a process that requires ‘zero’ defect, especially when working with custom wallpaper.

To ensure visual pattern continuity in the cabin, the wallpaper is used in the order of production without any waste. For this process, which can typically cause shifs in colour tone and pattern, Septemar’s most

experienced crafspeople work cohesively to put each piece together. Contrary to popular methods, the walls and door for each cabin are installed in advance as mock-ups at the factory, ensuring the desired quality and perfection.

In the guest bathrooms, teak and mirrored cabinets draw the eye. It’s produced using detailed CNC workmanship and the skillful hands of crafspeople to achieve a perfect surface. Despite its narrow angle, the mirrored cabinet pairs functionality with desirable materials. The rest of the bathroom, which is covered with Calacatta marble, highlights the elegance and quality of V2V’s interior areas.

Perfect match and perfect crafsmanship

Combining sought afer materials with cutting edge techniques and years of experience, Septemar delivers quality amid

an inviting living space. The light and spacious main saloon is defned by bleached oak and birdseye maple veneer. A polished teak dining table, bleached oak bar and centre table complement the carefully designed seating area.

A special mechanism was designed to ft the bespoke rope-shaped metal staircase railing, which was created to a desired thickness and strength, specially moulded to the shape of the staircase, and painted and polished.

New projects

Septemar is currently in the handover stage for an Antalya-based 42m yacht with an interior designed by Hot Lab. The company is also preparing for the delivery of its frst 50m Bilgin, with another fve projects in production, and has also begun production at its Ses Yat facility for a 40m sailing boat designed by Andre Hoek.

“Every boat is a new adventure for us,” says Seçkin, underlining that the company will continue to push R&D boundaries, especially in materials and production techniques. “We have delivered over 30 yachts, all of them diferent and special. We have experience but we also learn new things with every boat interior that we manufacture.”

The 50m Alunya, the second hull in Benetti’s 50m B.Now Oasis Deck.

It’s ofen said that the artisanal skill and crafsmanship required for shipbuilding is akin to a work of art. Benetti proves its true; it’s the only builder to have an example of its work – the Brigantino San Giorgio, the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time of her 1921 launch – housed under the same roof as Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. The shipyard celebrates 150 years of heritage, hard work and halcyon days in 2023, renowned for imbuing its clients and employees alike with a passion for excellence, design and technological innovation.

In the 1960s spearheaded by the charismatic Lorenzo Benetti, Benetti revolutionised the yachting world by switching its yacht construction from wood to steel. It’s credited with creating a

new type of boat – a mega yacht –exemplifed by the Delfno, Gabbiano and Mediterraneo, all of which were coveted by the rich. Benetti also gave rise to the ‘la dolce vita’ mega yacht lifestyle enjoyed by the jet set elite, from Prince Rainier of Monaco and David Bowie to Mick Jagger and The Beatles.

Today, the Livorno Shipyard, which boasts a 250,000m2 area, is the largest shipyard in the Mediterranean. During its anniversary celebrations in June, the marina hosted some of Benetti’s most iconic yachts: the 33m Odyssey III from the Mediterraneo series, Stella Fiera, the frst unit of the Classic 115’ series, the 39m El Caran commissioned by rockstar David Bowie, and the latest of the B.Now and Oasis Deck series.

Back to the beginning

It all began in 1873 when Lorenzo Benetti (1844-1914) purchased the Cantiere Darsena Lucca and founded the Benetti shipyard. Almost 40 years later his sons Gino and Emilio took over the family business. They drove the shipyard forward with pioneering steel-hulled diesel vessels, such as the legendary Delfno, an 18m Navette that represented a new leisure genre in boating.

Notable builds continued, with El Caran boasting an aluminium superstructure and distinctive canoe-shaped stern. But it was the 1979 build of 86m Nabila that changed the future of Benetti forever. Built by Adnan Khashoggi and designed by starchitect Jon Bannenberg, the fagship yacht was both an enduring icon and fnancial millstone around Benetti’s neck. In 1985, Paolo Vitelli, owner of the Azimut >>

shipyard, acquired Benetti and cemented Cantiere Benetti’s future.

Vitelli’s innovative approach continued apace. He introduced composite builds with the Classic 115’ line. The 2006 launch of Ambrosia, the world’s frst diesel-electric yacht, and the 2020 launch of the 107m hybrid Luminosity demonstrate Benetti’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. And in 2022, the B.Yond 37m was awarded the greenest yacht in its class for its innovative hybrid propulsion system.

Looking ahead

Owner and guests have unobstructed 270-degree views from the stern, while the beach club comes complete with a glass-walled infnity pool and social areas.

“The B.Now 50 model is certainly one of the most popular models in our history and the addition of the Oasis Deck made it possible to ofer new options to all owners who enjoy close contact with the sea,” says Benetti’s COO, Sebastiano Fanizza. “This new launch and the close collaboration with TWW confrm the commitment that the shipyard has to its customers and partners with greater awareness, thus confrming the brand’s role as a forerunner and leader in yacht design”.

Bespoke design

Conviviality is at the heart of the new B.Now 50M design thanks to a seamless indoor-outdoor confguration, with the main saloon looking directly out onto the Oasis Deck. British studio RWD was responsible for the concept design and exterior styling, with naval architecture by Italian studio PierLuigi Ausonio Naval Architecture. Benetti’s in-house HUB Design worked closely with the experienced owners on the design, including the fve-guest stateroom confguration.

The owner’s suite is located on the Main Deck forward and complete with a study area, a large ensuite and a private terrace. Her remaining guest staterooms are situated on the Lower Deck. The sub500 GT superyacht has a further six cabins for ten crew, including the Captain.

“We cannot emphasize enough how much of a pleasure it has been working with Benetti on both a commercial and technical level,” says David Westwood, Principal Partner at TWW Yachts. “The project was a great success and incredibly fun, thanks to the amazing support from the entire Benetti team. Despite the multiple interior changes that were made, the yacht has been launched on time and ready for the summer season.”

Following the yacht’s successful delivery in July 2023, the owners embarked on their maiden voyage.

A yachting hat trick

Heesen’s Dutch crafsmanship comes to the shipbuilding fore.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF HEESEN.

Dutch shipyard Heesen has the speculation build business down pat. It pairs semi-custom superyacht design with a fast delivery schedule and top quality build. It does this alongside its custom yacht deliveries, ensuring its production sheds in Oss operate at maximum capacity year-round.

In April 2023, it announced the milestone joining of the hull and superstructure for Project Serena, the latest in its 55m Steel series. Sporting its trademark ultraefcient FDFH hull and an exterior by Omega Architects, the 760 gt yacht is on schedule for a late 2024 delivery.

Heesen is renowned for building in both aluminium and steel. To avoid welding

cross-contamination between the two metals, it has developed strict protocols during its long-term partnership with Talsma, a Friesland shipyard, which kick starts the yachts’ steel construction. Serena’s steel hull arrived at Heesen’s facility in Oss in April following a two-day trip by sea, canal and river from the north of Holland. The aluminium superstructure arrived a day later.

“We owe our accomplishments not only to Heesen’s crafspeople but to our extended family of trustworthy suppliers and loyal partners, who are an integral part of our success,” says Heesen’s Chief Operation Ofcer, Rick van de Wetering. “We share the same vision as Talsma; to create the best Dutch superyachts in the smartest and most efcient manner possible.”

No two are the same

While semi-custom Heesens are based on the same engineered platform, the interiors wildly difer. “There are no two

Heesen 55m Steels that are the same,” says the owner’s representative Richard Kaye of Monaco-based brokerage frm Arcon Yachts.

Penned by Luca Dini Design & Architecture, Project Serena’s interior features sof and delicate tones. Oak and eucalyptus are the main veneers, while marbles used to enrich the décor include Namibian white with accents of silver moon, calcite azul and camellia green. Conceived as a luxurious canvas, the owners and their team are working on adding personal touches to all areas.

“This is the most inspiring period of the design process, as we collaborate closely with both client and shipyard to craf a beautiful design which we know Heesen’s specialists will execute fawlessly,” says Silvia Margutti of Luca Dini Design and Architecture. “We are also deeply involved in the engineering aspects of our design, and truly relish this confuence of Italian creativity and Dutch perfectionism.”

Project Venus

Capable of building up to 80m, Heesen’s two newest projects to be launched include the full-custom 67m Project Sparta – it’s largest steel build to date – and Project Venus, the latest addition to its best-selling 55-metre Steel Class.

Venus’ steel hull has also been constructed by Talsma. Built on speculation and available for sale with a Q2 2025 delivery, the interior has been entrusted to Luca Dini Design and Architecture for the ffh time. Margutti, head designer on the project, has created a unique and daring identity that remains friendly and pleasant, thriving on contrasts and providing a unique harmony.

The six staterooms sleeping twelve guests include a 96m2 owner’s apartment on the main deck forward with a double dressing room and full-beam bathroom. The main saloon features a well-proportioned and continuous space traditionally shared by a lounge and a dining area. The sea view foods in through side windows, refected and amplifed by mirrors, guiding the gaze towards the af doors. The sundeck has a large hot tub connected to the bar and a lounge area ideal for kicking back and soaking up the views and the lifestyle. Meanwhile, the beach club and bar area on the lower deck ofer easy access to the water.

“Project Venus presents a unique opportunity for clients who want a yacht big enough to accommodate luxury but compact enough to access small ports in the Mediterranean,” says Mark Cavendish, Heesen’s chief commercial ofcer. “The top-notch Dutch quality and the short delivery time make Project Venus a unique opportunity for yacht connoisseurs who want to be involved in the fun part of decorating a luxurious home away from home, with the certainty of taking delivery of a yacht with proven performance and exceptional value.”

Project Sparta

Launched in the same month as Venus, Project Sparta is an evolution of Heesen’s Project Avanti concept which it presented with Winch Design at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018. The low-profle, sporty yacht has retained the original athletic lines, with only minor adjustments made to the swimming pool. A classic snow

“At Heesen, we take pride in our ability to create complex custom yachts that are expertly engineered and built to meet the highest Dutch quality standards,” says Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s head of engineering. “Our team eagerly embraces the challenges posed by full-custom yachts. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the exceptional levels of excellence we can achieve and Sparta is a testament to our commitment to delivering the fnest superyachts.”

The inside world

On the interior, Winch Design made the most of the yacht’s generous 1,200 GT interior volume. and views of the ocean. Ideally suited to two principals, Sparta has two separate owner’s suites on a private deck and four guest suites on the main deck. A movable partition separates the forward suites to create a full-beam VIP or a large playroom for younger family members

An elegant staircase and glass elevator serve all three decks. The lower deck is home to a large Japanese-inspired wellness area with an elliptical whirlpool, steam room, sauna, gym and beauty area. The yacht’s outdoor spaces feature customdesigned furniture by Winch Design. Sparta’s matching custom limousine tender, a mini version of the mothership, is stored behind the gullwing doors of the forward garage.

“This is the ffh project we have built with Heesen and the mutual trust that has grown up between us is particularly gratifying,” says Kaye, who has been working with Sparta’s owners as project manager. “We know our input is valued, and we hold the expertise of this Dutch shipyard and the unrivalled quality it delivers in the highest esteem.”

Few yachts are as recognisable by name or sight as the 88m sailing yacht, Maltese Falcon. Commissioned by entrepreneurial and visionary owner Tom Perkins in 2006 and built by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, the yacht paved the way for more efcient, striking and, following the subsequent delivery of Black Pearl, sustainable new builds. Now under new ownership and fresh from a 2023 reft at Lusben in Viareggio, the iconic sailing yacht is ready to take the next chapter of thrilling adventures across the ocean.

Sporting naval architecture by Gerard Dijkstra and interior design by Ken Freivokh, Maltese Falcon is renowned for the beauty of her lines, harmonious design and extensive onboard technology. The

six-month reft at Lusben involved over 80 people across various teams working in synergy with the boat’s crew.

Talent and time

With more than 60 years of experience in the yacht reft industry, Lusben’s technical experts are internationally renowned for the quality of their reft work. One of the most challenging jobs required during the Maltese Falcon reft was repainting the entire hull in its distinctive Perini Blue colour scheme.

Of course, Maltese Falcon’s most distinctive feature remains the cutting edge DynaRig. Its three rotating carbon fbre masts deploy 2,396m2 of sail in a matter of seconds. This surface area translates into a top speed of

25 knots with a displacement of 1,240t, so it’s not surprising that Lusben’s workforce paid special attention to the rig, undertaking cleaning operations across the entire mast handling system.

“It was challenging project for all of us, not least because the sheer size of this sailing yacht required us to design and build a special system to accommodate the vessel in dry dock,” says Gianni Paladino,

Lusben’s commercial director. “We worked in synergy with the various teams involved in the reft work [and with the owner], satisfying their wishes and at the same time suggesting improvements with a view to increasing efciency and energy savings. It was an honour for all of us to be able to carry out this modernisation work on such an iconic boat, one that has made international yachting history.”

Moving forward

In the near 20 years since the yacht’s delivery, the world’s focus has shifed from pure crafsmanship and the pleasure of sailing to the necessary issue of sustainability. It’s for this reason that the decision was made to replace the generators with superior class units that are more efcient and have lower fuel consumption. The main engine mufers were also swapped for a more

The yacht’s original teak deck was replaced, and the interiors, including guest cabins and bathrooms, were refurbished to ofer greater comfort. A fully appointed galley ensures the calibre and efciency of guest meals remains on point, and the installation of LED lighting throughout brings further energy savings.

“It was a challenging job and an efort that involved everyone, because of the high expectations around the project and the complexity of its planning and execution but the result is more than satisfactory thanks to the support of the yard and Lusben’s team.”

All technical machinery was overhauled and checked, including the generators, main engines, propellers, shafs, blades and bearings to ensure efciency in the years to come and optimise fuel consumption. Maintenance was carried out on the onboard systems, including the delicate mast handling system, as well as a routine hull clean.

Bilgin Yachts: Stepping up a gear

Demonstrating skill and capability, Bilgin Yachts pushes to the fore with three distinctive series that place Turkey on the map.

Bilgin Yachts was founded in the 1900s and is located on the European side of Istanbul. The family run business operates four shipyards across the city, including its newest build and reft facility at West Istanbul Marina. The Turkish yard is capable of building yachts ranging in size from 50m up to 120m, including its all-new 52m Bilgin 170.

The frst hull in the 170 series reunites the same team that guaranteed Bilgin’s previous success on the 163 series, with exterior design and naval architecture by

Antalya-based Unique Yacht Design and an interior penned by Hot Lab. In fact, designer Emrecan Ozgun, founder of Unique Yacht Design, took the successful Bilgin 163 platform and supersized it to form the 170. Sporting a traditional bow shape, the yacht enjoys spacious open decks, an expansive storage and parking area for both crew and toys, and a sporty, sleek aesthetic.

“The layout of the Bilgin 170 remains identical to its sibling models, ensuring familiarity and ease of use for customers,”

says Ozgun. “The primary goal during the design process was to optimise the 50m models, achieving a sporty, masculine look while blending the design seamlessly to ofer customers the ability to use both open and enclosed spaces under 500gt. This meticulous focus on functionality and aesthetics has resulted in a yacht that truly stands out from the crowd.”

a spacious and inviting shaded area to unwind. The lower deck beach club’s large windows ensure ample daylight even with all three doors closed, while the classic bow ofers enough space for additional private seating and sunbathing once the yacht’s rescue boat is deployed. For sea devotees, the extended swim platform ofers a larger space closer to the sea, with room for sun loungers and loose furniture.

The 499gt yacht accommodates up to twelve guests and a crew of nine. The interior combines functionality with refned aesthetics. The frst unit is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2024, followed by the second unit slated for early 2025.

cream, light grey and of-white elements. Principal materials include wood, metalmesh laminated glass, chromed stainless steel and rich Italian textiles. Bilgin’s commercial director, Berkay Yilmaz, describes the interior as modern, luxurious and elegant.

“The yacht has very generous head heights throughout the living areas, and large windows and low bulwarks that increase the visibility in the main living room,” he says. “Hot Lab has added special features, such as a foating staircase, a skylight integrated in the sundeck foor, an amazing chandelier in the main lobby, and a full-height glass wall that separates the lobby from the main living room.”

Three times a charm

News of both Bilgin’s 163 and 170 series came only months afer Bilgin launched Leona, its 80m Bilgin 263 to the world in October. The sistership to the awardwinning Tatiana – the largest private yacht that has ever been built in Turkey. Since delivering in August 2023, Leona has made a splash of her own thanks to her vibrant red and white exterior colour scheme that earned the yacht the nickname, the Red Bullet.

The 263 series sees Unique Yacht Design’s naval architecture and exterior design paired with an interior by British studio H2 Yacht Design, whose founder Jonny

Horsfeld is keen to highlight the yacht’s diferentiators from her award-winning sister.

“Leona is diferent in many ways to her sistership Tatiana,” he says. “Although the general layout is essentially identical and the yachts ofer accommodation for up to ten guests, Leona has more emphasis on space with cabin numbers being reduced in order to provide larger accommodation.”

Tatiana’s four guest cabin-layout on the main deck has been replaced with two generous VIP cabins with dressing rooms and en suites. On the lower deck there are two cabins instead of three, with additional storage, larger dressing rooms, plus space for a cinema, gym and sauna. The owner’s deck sees the biggest change with the superstructure extending af to create an enlarged suite and a private lounge area on the forward deck with access to the owner’s exterior pool. Ozgun describes the series as a one-of-a-kind.

“We created a very attractive yacht with a sleek and sexy profle while avoiding a high dosage of design clichés,” he says. “Enlarged living areas usually result in bulky designs, [but] the Bilgin 263 has a design attitude that will dominate the yachting sector around the world. This will clearly make her a trendsetter among steelaluminium superyachts of today.”

The third hull in the 263 series is scheduled for 2024. Equipped with a special exhaust system that provides 100% clean air emissions, all the yachts in the series are built in compliance with IMO Tier III certifcation and according to Bilgin are considered the most environmentally friendly yachts in their class.

Venturing into the future

Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS), part of the Viken Group, is ‘au fait’ with extraordinary projects across cruise ship design, superyacht design, branding and signage. It all began nearly 60 years ago close to the village of Viken on the coast of Sweden when founder Robert Tillberg developed the design for the ocean cruise liner Kungsholm and made it a showcase of bespoke Scandinavian style.

Since then, Tillberg and the team’s innovations have spanned the frst atrium

on a cruise ship aboard Sea Venture, the inspiring multi-deck restaurant on Freedom of the Seas and the grandeur of Queen Mary 2, the longest and largest passenger ship in the world at the time of her launch.

Increasingly, the team recognises a merging of traditional cruise ships and private superyachts, with the growing trend for explorer yachts reshaping boutique cruise opportunities. Equipped with the operational functionality of cruise ships, built to accommodate a

limited few and fnished to the highest level of detail, it’s a blend that the multidisciplinary team at TDoS is wellversed in.

“We see a lot of crossovers now between cruise ships and yachts – we call them cruise yachts, which are like commercial passenger vessels but with a yacht feeling,” says Fredrik Johansson of TDoS. “There are operational aspects, therefore, which are morphing and changing, and we are leading this process in the industry.”

Tillberg Design of Sweden celebrates 60 years with 60m expedition yacht Mimer. 60m Mimer.

With the studio marking six decades of design in 2023, its vision for 60m explorer yacht Mimer and 77m Nobiskrug-built Lycka focuses on showstopping adventures across the world’s oceans.

Combined power

Lycka – the Swedish word for happiness – draws on TDoS’ design fair and passion for environmental considerations, from sustainable materials to technical systems. Meanwhile, Mimer displays a perfect harmony between clean, luxurious and refned interior spaces and fexible

explorer functionality. It proposes three diferent af end options catering to owners’ varying needs, from an extensive toy chest, heli-cruising capability or an additional guest lounge with tender storage.

TDoS has made great strides to not only select sustainable materials and technologies, but to develop more circular designs in collaboration with like-minded companies who are not necessarily from the marine sector.

Viken

The formation of the Viken Group – the parent company of Tillberg Design of Sweden that now also encompasses superyacht design studio Hot Lab and naval architecture and engineering frm Thalia Marine – means that the team can ofer a full-service package, from small bespoke yachts to the largest mega cruise ships.

“We can design not just the interior and exterior but also engineer it, and design and service check the complete technical platform,” says Johansson. “We start with the guest experience or the owner’s vision

and then tailor the total solution in-house, which is unique in this industry.”

TDoS selected Kocaeli-based Turkish shipyard AES Yacht to partner in the development of technical specifcations for Mimer, a 6,000-mile-range expedition platform. It’s a natural ft considering Milan-based studio Hot Lab has had three of its superyacht designs built with AES to date, ranging between 24m and 68m.

“The Viken Group is very happy about this new collaboration with AES Yacht – we have already worked with them on other projects and are well aware of their capabilities,” says Antonio Romano, commercial director at Viken. “We chose this shipyard because it has one of the largest facilities in Turkey with very experienced naval architects and engineers. They can provide everything in-house, from steel and metal construction to furniture and interior.”

“Another important factor is that AES has capacity and a slot available for the Mimer project and they can build it in 36 months when an owner signs a contract,” he adds.

Mimer

Mimer is a concept design shaped around a ‘target client’ – someone in their 30s or early 40s looking for a family boat or a platform to share with family and friends – and pitched in size as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It’s ofered either with a full high-latitude hull built to Polar Code Category C, Ice 1-C standards, or with a conventional hull that ofers a more economical build solution for owners who don’t intend to cruise to the extremes. There are also two propulsion confgurations, comprising pod drives

with diesel-electric generators or conventional engines and shaf drives. Studies are currently being undertaken to consider alternative propulsion and power solutions as they evolve.

“We have done a lot of expedition vessels before and they are all very masculine in their design,” says Daniel Nerhagen, partner and yacht director at Tillberg Design of Sweden. “We say an expedition vessel doesn’t need to look aggressive – we wanted to create a ‘she’. That’s where we started, and then we also wanted to showcase our heritage of simplifed Scandinavian design – luxurious, with the fnest materials and crafsmanship, but clean and with the aesthetics of simplicity in the design.”

From the acres of glazing and bulwark glass that gif 360-degree views to the routing and functional crew aspects of the layout, the concept revolves around efcient operational capabilities. The team has drawn on both its own wider experience and the knowledge of key experts, including two expedition companies, a yacht management company and Laurent Giles Naval Architects.

“Scandinavian design is about simplicity, about the quality of the materials and beautiful crafsmanship, but it’s also very practical,” Nerhagen explains. “The way we design is ‘less is more’, and the way we build things is with high quality and attention to detail. Sometimes it can be rustic, other times it’s contemporary, but it still has the same principles – it’s in the quality of the details and the materials.”

Clean and simple

While the Mimer concept takes full advantage of exploring hybrid and alternative power and propulsion options, is also of draws on sustainable principles in all aspects of its design and build. That means everything from using recycled and recyclable materials and sourcing local products, to using eco-friendly antifouling and other measures to protect biodiversity.

“Sustainability is something we have been working on with commercial projects for a very long time now, and for us as Scandinavians it’s not a trend,” says Nerhagen. “It’s just something you do and it’s very much in our culture.”
