EDITOR’S Boat show frazzle NOTE T

he leaves on the trees are turning a rusty shade of brown, the low-lying sun casts stretched inky shadows and the cobwebs are out in force. Yes, winter is coming. And yet boat show season remains as steadfast as ever. Cannes, Monaco and FLIBS may be behind us, but METS is just around the corner, and Antigua, Düsseldorf, Miami and Dubai are shimmering on the horizon. If there’s one element that staunchly unites the superyacht industry, it’s a relentless work ethic with a strong desire to evolve. Lürssen’s rapid 300-day refit of 20-year-old classic motor yacht Carinthia VII (featured in our yacht report on page 26) is the epitome of such evolution. First commissioned in 2002 by Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten, the famously private yacht was snapped up by a new buyer in 2022. She cruised into Port Hercules like a new lady this September ahead of her charter debut. The marrying of old (original teak decks and parquet floors) and new (30km of cabling, stabilisers and a stunning 11m swimming pool) is to be commended. Our second yacht report (page 22) homes in on Hakvoort’s fullcustom transatlantic superyacht Milele, a 45m fast aluminium boat that pairs good looks with efficient performance. She too debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show, showcasing Van Oossanen’s Fast Displacement Hull Form combined with the world’s first Hull Vane to be built out of carbon. We also tour Feadship’s latest concept – Dunes – an 83m yacht with reduced energy needs that strides towards the shipyard’s goal of Net-Zero (page 14), while ISA Yachts’ new Sportivo line brings large volume to smaller platforms (page 38).

And as mentioned, the 35th edition of Metstrade looms near (page 10), with a record number of new initiatives added to the agenda for 2023. These include the Next Generation Propulsion Zone showcasing alternative fuels and zero-emission solutions, and the Foiling Technology Pavilion where visitors can learn about new applications.

NEWS IN BRIEF Heesen announces joining of hull and superstructure for Project Venus Dutch shipyard Heesen announced in October the joining of the hull and superstructure for 55m YN 20655, code-named Project Venus – the latest model in its successful 55 Steel series. Fitted with two MTU4000 M63 (IMO Tier III), the yacht has a maximum speed of 15.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 4,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 13 knots. It combines a Fast Displacement Hull form devised by Van Oossanen with Heesen’s inhouse engineering. The yacht is available for sale with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2025.

Ocean Independence announces the sale of high-performance Naiad RIB, Sea Ranger Superyacht brokerage Ocean Independence has released details of the sale of a custom built, highperformance Naiad RIB named Sea Ranger. Available via the company’s Auckland office, the boat was commissioned to be a capable superyacht tender. It has a range of 300 nautical miles at 30 knots, a cabin for two with ensuite facilities and a compact galley for long range exploring. Other features include a wet bar aft, sun pads, a swim platform, and a full length portside walk around which creates safe and easy access for all guests, especially children.

Palumbo completes new shed construction in record time

Italian boatbuilder Palumbo Superyachts has confirmed the completion of a new 60m shed at its Ancona facility for superyacht outfitting. It joins the builder’s existing facilities at its 52,000sqm production site. “With the completion of the new shed, we are getting a breath of fresh air in terms of logistical and production efficiency, but we are always looking for new areas next to our construction site and overlooking the sea to better manage our orders,” said Giuseppe Palumbo, CEO of Palumbo Superyachts. The yard has 10 superyachts ranging from 30m to 80m of EXTRA Yachts, Columbus and ISA Yachts currently under construction.

Dutch shipyard Feadship has confirmed its latest build Project 1011 has exited the construction shed at its facility in Makkum, with fitting out set to continue as she readies for sea trials in the North Sea prior to delivery. Project 1011 has been built for a highly experienced owner who was closely involved in every detail of the 103m project from the start. The owner requested similar amenities and living space as his previous yacht of 6,000GT but in a design of half the volume for easier access to anchorages and harbours. A key part of the design is a single deck engine room to devote more interior volume to guest use. It’s a successful design solution that Feadship has already applied to a second project under construction in Makkum.

Numarine announces the sale of third 40MXP superyacht In October, Numarine confirmed the sale of a new build 40MXP, the third hull in its successful series. It features an innovative open transom with pool, upgraded MAN 900hpm IMO Tier III engines, and a full displacement steel hull, as well as a range of 5,000nm. The aft lazarette area of the 40MXP-03 will be a dive centre with custom storage for scuba equipment, a compressor, masks/fins, wetsuits, tanks, and water sports toys. It will also be a tackle centre as the owners are avid fishermen and the yacht will have a large tow behind the tender.

Holterman Shipyard adds flybridge model to its Xtreme series Dutch boatbuilder Holterman Shipyard has announced the addition of a flybridge model to its award-winning Xtreme series. The Xtreme 78 Flybridge, which is currently in build at the shipyard’s Meppel facilities, adds a focus on warm-weather cruising to the successful range and is due for delivery in early 2024. Williams Jet Tenders receives UK EDGE funding for sustainable model Williams Jet Tenders, the world’s leading jet tender specialist, has been selected by Innovate UK EDGE to receive a grant of £13,000 to fund part of its ongoing sustainability programme to test alternative, more sustainable composite materials for use in its tenders. Spearheaded by Williams, the project, which commenced in October, will be delivered in partnership with the National Composites Centre (NCC) in Bristol. As part of Williams’ ongoing, planned sustainability programme, and through the Life Cycle Analysis of its tenders, the team has already identified composites as having the greatest material impact and associated carbon emissions.

M

etstrade, the world’s leading show for the leisure marine equipment industry, returns for its 35th edition in 2023 with a record number of new initiatives added to the agenda. Sustainability, diversity, design and innovation sit at the forefront of the event’s offering. This includes the DAME Design Awards that highlight sustainable design, and a keynote speech from Massimo Perotti, CEO of Italian yacht builder Sanlorenzo, at the annual Breakfast Briefing jointly hosted by Metstrade and

The three-day event attracts manufacturers and buyers the world over, who descend upon the Dutch city of Amsterdam, to network with around 1,400 manufacturers and a whopping 17,000 industry peers. Several headline features and presentations will demonstrate how the environmental challenge has shifted from debating what is needed to executing change today.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes this year is the days the show falls on. Since 1988, the event has taken place from Tuesday to Thursday. In 2023, the show runs from Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th November, to allow sufficient build-up time for all exhibitors. “Throughout its history, Metstrade has been at the forefront of the key leisure marine issues of the day,” says event director Niels Klarenbeek. “This year, among many initiatives, we recognise the

Steering the course towards a greener, more responsible future for sailing, Metstrade has also announced a pioneering collaboration with World Sailing to deliver the World Sailing Sustainability Challenge.

Taking advantage of the show’s expansion into RAI Amsterdam’s Hall 7, the FTP will run in partnership with The Foiling Organization, who are responsible for Foiling Week and the Foiling Awards. Visitors will be able to learn first-hand how foil manufacturers and their collaborative mechanical and electronic equipment suppliers are moving the energy saving potential of foiling from exotic to mainstream applications.

Steering the course towards a greener, more responsible future for sailing, Metstrade has also announced a pioneering collaboration with World Sailing to deliver the World Sailing Sustainability Challenge. World Sailing and World Sailing Trust are collaborating to set up an Equipment Recycling Hub for common but difficult to

recycle sailing equipment at the 2023 Allianz Sailing World Championships which took place in the Netherlands in August. Following these Championships, the collected items will be showcased at Metstrade’s Construction Material Pavilion to bring the issues around the recyclability of sailing equipment to the attention of the wider marine industry. Of course, no products could be innovated and built without skilled people and entrepreneurial pioneering companies to create them. Hall 7 will also host a Start-Up Pavilion in collaboration with global startup hub Yachting Ventures. The Pavilion will feature 15 early-stage companies who have been carefully vetted. Visitors will be able to meet with then there to view their pioneering products, or across at the Metstrade Theatre in Hall 13 where they

A

mong the starlets and debutants that descend on Port Hercules each year, the Monaco Yacht Show shines a spotlight on the latest concepts and innovations that drive the industry forward. Leading the pack in terms of creativity and fully developed designs is Dutch shipyard Feadship, whose annual unveilings push the boundaries of yachting. And this year was no different. Feadship’s twelfth cutting-edge concept design is an 83m concept named Dunes with significantly reduced energy needs. Conceived by Studio De Voogt, it strides towards Feadship’s goal of NetZero superyachts by combining features that reduce energy demand with technology that increases efficiency and eliminates emissions. Examples include shading windows to reduce cooling requirements, extra-capacity nextgeneration storage batteries, and a new type of fuel cell. “Each element reduces environmental impact, but when implemented together, Dunes will slash a superyacht’s environmental impact without diminishing the enjoyment of cruising,” said Feadship in a statement. “Assessed using the comprehensive YETI tooling, Dunes eliminates up to 95% of the potential negative environmental factors associated with operating a superyacht.”

“Before we could begin drawing lines, we had to define the scope,” says designer Thijs Orth, who took the lead on the concept. “From customer input, we thought the ‘envelope’ should contain six guest staterooms, plus a spa area, a beach club, an owner’s private deck and a pool. It would be a substantial hull.” Other considerations were put to the test in the early stages to define the parameters of the design, from the feasible proposal of giving guest staterooms direct access to the beach club, to the

more extreme idea of creating decks that can generate electricity. However, the change that Feadship settled on – moving the engine room from the middle of the yacht (the most comfortable place on a boat) to an area further forward – paved the way for an entirely new layout where lower deck guest suites link to a fantastic beach club, water sports platform and a pool above. It was a move made possible due to Dunes being an electric yacht. Electric yachts do not require large gearboxes, long shafts and propellors. In addition, electricitygenerating fuel cells, battery banks and the power management station can be decentralised and located virtually anywhere convenient to the crew. The move eliminated the need for large engine room air and exhaust trunks that typically compromise guest living areas or dictate stairway placement and freed up space for a virtual helm station or command centre on the lower deck next to crew quarters.

In terms of performance, Dunes’ electric propulsion system from ABB, called ABB Dynafin. In development and testing for ten years, the ABB Dynafin uses revolving, vertical blades to mimic the thrust of a whale’s tail – one of the most efficient forms of thrust ever seen. The first prototype is estimated to be available in 2025, with hydrodynamic efficiency targeted to be up to 85% (up from 65% for current pod drives or 55-60% for typical propellors on shafts.) An independent study estimates savings in propulsion energy consumption of up to 22% compared to conventional shaft line configuration.

Sustainability laid bare

Of course, sustainability is more than controlling exhaust emissions. Dunes is teak-free, replaced by two new luxury decking systems being tested by Feadship for this concept. The exterior decks are made of tiny glass/stone chips sealed in a

transparent aliphatic polyurethane resin that can be sculpted in myriad shapes to show direction or amplify the impact of built-in features. In Dunes, the idea comes to life in alfresco lounges that are imagined as islands on the decks, rendered in golden, maple wood – a sustainable teak lookalike. The long aft overhangs are supported by a single maple-clad column, uniting decorative sections of maple overhead with those below. The hull and superstructure are built from ‘low impact’ steel and aluminium (something that has already been implemented by Feadship on one vessel in build and is now standard material for all future new build Feadships). The uppermost Pavilion Deck – which is surrounded by glass and separates a forward sun and Jacuzzi zone from an informal dining and conversation area aft – is built of treated timber, which is proven to be a CO2-negative building material with a high natural insulating capacity.

“This benefit and the beauty of the material come without increasing its overall weight,” explains Feadship. The Pavilion Deck is flexibly designed to accommodate the option of being outfitted for formal indoor dining, a night club or conference room, depending on the owner’s wishes.

Cool character

The yacht’s signature feature is, of course, its striking 10m mast, which has an important technical function. It forms part of Studio De Voogt’s ‘Cool Core Concept’, which divides guest areas into temperature zones. Sleeping quarters are cool (19-20 degrees), social areas are about 22-23 degrees, and the Pavilion estimate is 24-25 degrees. The Pavilion is cooled using air drawn up the central staircase from other parts of the ship. The triangular mast shape has convex and concave foils that align with the

direction of the wind. As the breeze crosses the mast, it generates a low-pressure zone on the leeside, naturally pulling the slightly over-pressurized cooled air from lower decks to this level. Together with the large overhangs, optimized recirculation, and increased insulation throughout, Feadship calculates that HVAC energy use is reduced by 35% on an annual basis. The mast also features a slim, two-blade vane that, when at anchor, can yield about 25MWh of energy per year from the wind. The foredeck is coated with a thin film solar panel called solar paint, which is currently in its infancy, but one day could provide an additional layer of alternative energy.

says the builder. “Surrounding guests with design inspired by nature allows them to relax even more once they step onboard.” Generous, shady walk-around decks are a main feature of the design. It both protects guests from the elements, provides alternate routes around the yacht, as well as unexpected outdoor seating and entertaining areas. It bucks the usual trend of making shaded outdoor areas aft and leans into one of the yacht’s more recognisable features – an asymmetrical superstructure with virtually no straight lines. Staircases are circular or gently curved. Windows and glass doors are full height, shaded by well-positioned overhangs (or deck shoulders as Feadship calls them) that follow the contours of the glass. The shipyard estimates they decrease heat building behind the glass by 60%. “Feadship Concept Designs are a true joint effort,” says the shipyard. “As so many things within Feadship, [Dunes] is an extensive team effort, in which colleagues from Studio de Voogt and the Knowledge & Innovation department (26 in total) all combine their specialty.” i. feadship.nl

Making direct connection with the patient’s personal physician anywhere, anytime, is the key to the product, bypassing the emergency service centres that are commonly used for telemedicine, in which the patient’s data is analysed by whichever doctor is on duty. Videowork’s HRM preserves the patient’s privacy and ensures direct communication with medical expert who is familiar with the patient’s pathologies and state of health.

5G connection

The development of the HRM is further supported by Videoworks’ new 5G connection that is guaranteed by a LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite system. Providing a wireless connection with Bonding technology that is just as stable and fast as on land, the solution combines two 5G channels to obtain greater bandwidth for connection stability and high speeds. Furthermore, the technology provides ‘georeferenced services’ that guarantees an American guest, for example, can browse using an American IP even when connected to a French or Italian provider. This means that users connecting to streaming services or browsing the internet will be presented with familiar screen views, such as home pages in their own language. Videoworks believes that a growing use of streaming services means appreciation for this service will grow in the future. In addition, Videoworks uses the HTML5 standard, a graphic technology borrowed from the automotive industry that permits greater flexibility in the design and customisation of graphic user interfaces. The aim is to assimilate user experiences across TV, tablets and other on-board monitors, ensuring simpler usability.

HAKVOORT’S FULL-CUSTOM TRANSATLANTIC SUPERYACHT IS DESIGNED FOR LIGHTER CRUISING

T

he 45m world-cruising, fast aluminium motor yacht Milele made her world debut at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show and took spectators by storm. With naval architecture by Van Oossanen, exterior design by Omega Architects and an interior penned by Martin Hanff, the yacht pairs irresistible good looks with good sea keeping qualities, as well as speed and range. Built by Dutch shipyard Hakvoort, the full-custom yacht was sold to the owner by Ocean Independence, which also handles the yacht’s operational management. Construction was supervised by Hamburg-based firm Zucker + Partner. “Without doubt, Milele is one of the most exciting yachts built in the last years,” says Peter Hürzeler, CEO of Ocean Independence. “At the Monaco Yacht Show she attracted a lot of visitors who gave enthusiastic feedback to a degree I have not experienced before. Milele’s style, technical features and elegant beauty clearly make her stand out. It’s wonderful when visionary owners turn their ideas into reality.”

Owner-led design

Milele’s clear and clean lines give the yacht a sturdy and masculine exterior profile. It’s in part thanks to the hands-on owner who was heavily involved in fine-tuning the exterior lines. Some of the innovative details he introduced include scooped bulwarks that offer clear lines of sight, custom designed stainless handrails, and specific outdoor furniture designs for each deck. He also removed the proposed rub rail preferring a clean ‘shaved’ bulwark. The yacht enjoys large, generous outdoor spaces, such as a well-protected foredeck lounge area, an expansive sun deck, and lounging areas on the bridge and main decks. For those looking for action, a gym offers guests the opportunity to work out. In addition to an array of water toys, a two-person submarine is kept on board. Used to explore the underwater world,

it is capable of diving to depths of up to 100m. Both the yacht’s captain and the chief engineer have the appropriate license to pilot the submarine, which is stored below a huge hatch forward and launched by a crane. When the hatch is opened completely at night, it converts into an outdoor cinema screen.

What lies beneath

A large part of Milele’s performance lies below the waterline. Van Oossanen’s patented Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) is combined with the Hull Vane, an underwater spoiler placed below in the stern. It’s the first time the innovative hull vane has been built out of carbon. As a result, fuel consumption is reduced by an average of 20-25% and guests’ onboard comfort is improved. Compounding these hull features are the yacht’s two 2,580 kW MTUs diesel engines that are supported by two electric booster engines. It means Milele is faster than most yachts of her size and can reach an impressive speed of 25.5 knots. When exploration calls, the yacht has transatlantic capability with a range of

3,800 nautical miles when cruising at a steady speed of 12 knots. More importantly, Milele benefits from an electric-only drive mode, allowing her owners to visit sensitive ecological areas where the dynamic positioning system mitigates the use of anchors.

Inside design

On board, the yacht’s spacious accommodation sleeps eight guests, including an owner’s suite on the main deck, with a private office and ensuite, and three further guest cabins on the lower deck. The owner’s choice of furniture conjures a welcoming and elegant ambience that uses leather and bird’s eye elm as the key materials on board. The main salon twins two separate areas for lounging and formal dining, which are connected by a centrally placed feature wine cellar. The artisanal-crafted sideboards, both port and starboard, display a selection of fine wines behind glass doors. On the upper deck, the sky lounge enjoys a cosy TV nook, with further casual dining and a game table. It enjoys direct access to the bridge deck aft.

Delivering efficient performance and enhanced design, Milele is a modern yacht with a shallow 2.5m draft and conceived for a lighter footprint.

LÜRSSEN PULLS OFF A RAPID 300-DAY REFIT

Carinthia VII The 20-year-old classic motor yacht remerges with contemporary appeal.

F

ollowing 20 years of single ownership and with only 4,000 original engine hours on the clock, the famously private 97m yacht, Carinthia VII, was snapped up by a new owner in 2022. Newly emerged from a rapid 300-day refit by Lürssen in September, the historic yacht cruises into the winter season with a new lease of life. “A refit is not just about necessary maintenance, it can also be a way to completely transform a yacht,” says Alberto Perrone, Refit Sales Director at Lürssen. Whilst the shipyard is known

globally for its many new build superyachts, Carinthia VII puts a flag in the sand for its refit side of the business. “We enjoy the very complex rebuilds and refits, we like when owners come to us with problems to solve and we want to do the things that other yards steer clear of,” Perrone says.

access via a brand new staircase. Inside and outside the pool is painted in “stars and stripes” blue; a blue with a touch of grey that gives the water the reflection of the deep sea below and which contrasts with the original teak deck. There is also a new 85m2 air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck. Housing a plethora of top of the range professional fitness equipment, the gym required six tons of folding glass doors to create a winter garden. It also houses a new large cinema screen for outdoor movie experiences. However, the most complex task was the new owner’s request to convert Carinthia VII from private to commercial use, to permit the yacht to enter the charter market. “This is a very complex job which requires the review of regulations and many negotiations with the class to navigate safely through the sea of rules” says Perrone.

The list of technical upgrades completed by Lürssen includes a new waterpower treatment, a full sprinkler system, 30km of cabling for a new AV/IT system, new exhaust filters and fully overhauled engines. Zero speed stabilizers were fitted, and yacht had to meet new SOLAS stability requirements.

Bizzozero Cassina Architects spearheaded the interior and exterior design transformation, working in close collaboration with the owner’s representatives from RYacht Management, who participated in defining various new operational aspects and oversaw the technical project management of the refit, as well as the ongoing management. Bizzozero Cassina Architects only had two yacht projects to its name before embarking on Carinthia VII but has completed residential projects for the owner and brought a similar

look and feel to the yacht’s lavish interior, including all eight guest cabins. There are six guest suites on the forward main deck – two with double beds, two with single beds and the two bow cabins can also be converted into children’s playrooms. Most of the fixed furniture has been retained. The wall panels have been covered with new fabrics and the wood panels have been repainted. The quality of the marble in the bathrooms was so exceptional that no refinishing was necessary. Of note is the thickness of the cabin doors, which were retained but raised to meet commercial licensing requirements, while retaining the original door faces as artistic masterpieces.

The original interior remained in extremely good condition, thanks in part to the high quality that was first fitted, and

to the original owner, Heidi Horten’s, sparing use of the yacht for her annual summer cruise. The new owner elected to keep at least one piece of furniture per room, including the beautiful, parquet wooden floor throughout has aged beautifully with time. The two large lounge sofas on both sides of the main deck salon are designed as a single unit, derived from the idea of giving all guests the comfortable feeling of a hug. The specially designed carpet emphasises the unified interpretation of this space. The walls, like most areas of the yacht, have been adorned with new fabrics from an artisan manufacturer in Venice. Forward of the main salon is the central staircase decorated with handmade, lasercut leather tiles, designed to reflect the crosshatch parquet flooring. Rising in an ombré pattern from deep ocean on the lower deck to pale sky blue on the bridge

deck, they mimic the colours of the yacht’s surroundings.

Design landmarks

The upper deck is dedicated to the owner’s use, including an aft outdoor deck equipped with a teppanyaki round bar. It holds a club lounge that harks back to the golden era of entertainment, ideal for relaxing after dinner. Four large rotating loungers pivot to enable guests to watch a movie in cinemastyle on the large screen or create an intimate space to watch the games from. To port is a spacious VIP suite, with the entire window side flooded with natural light that enhances the blue colour of the wall panelling. Further forward is the original make-up and hairdressing room, the only room where the original mosaic floor has been preserved. To starboard is the owner’s large office and salon. The ornate

office table is another original feature. The starboard dressing room was left almost untouched, the ‘boiserie’ (woodwork) is so beautiful that the designers didn’t want to touch it. The only change is the metal hardware on the closet doors. The owner’s suite is accessed either through the bathroom or dressing room, and has been refurnished and transformed into a chic, calming haven of warm woods, creams and blues. A television rises from the foot of the bed when required yet stays hidden when far-reaching views from bed are preferred.

Looking forward

Other changes include the sundeck, which has been overhauled to make it more desirable for charter with a barbecue, wet bar and lounging area. The original highgloss wood panelled ceilings are painted white, while the newly designed spa area offers direct access to the sea through the side terrace and is the perfect place for a massage or workout. There is also a beautiful bijoux beauty salon, complete with nail desk, pedicure station and retractable hairdresser station. Completing the wellness area is the steam room, where the original ornate mosaic has been

meticulously preserved. A full exterior paint job sees the hull updated to Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls painted in Shark Grey. W

hile Morten Fon, President and CEO of leading paint company Jotun, acknowledges that the maritime industry still has a long way to go to reach IMO GHG targets (which call for a reduction in carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030), he sees some encouraging signs of change. Much of the industry’s focus is placed on developing and commercialising alternative fuels for ships. And as a leader in hull performance, the Norwegian company advocates that maintaining a cleaner hull with minimal fouling means a vessel has less resistance when sailing through water, therefore reducing the amount of fuel required to achieve the same speeds, cutting down emissions. Yet Fon also believes that leadership, innovation and collaboration are the way forward.

Speculate to innovate

Jotun has a long history of collaboration. Many Jotun product innovations involve partnerships with owners and shipyards, while others involve cooperation with technical partners and relevant stakeholders in both the private and public sectors. In 2013, Jotun helped form an ISO working group made of 53 experts to develop the industry’s first hull and propeller performance standard (ISO 19030), which was released in 2016.

Protection of biodiversity goes hand-in-hand with decarbonisation in the shipping industry and both require a clean hull and attention to biofouling management.”

Transparency is key

Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) provides market leading hull performance by combining advanced coating systems with proactive, efficient, safe and environmentally friendly inspections and cleaning.

In 2022, Jotun joined the Clean Hull Initiative (CHI), which aims to develop a global standard for proactive hull cleaning in international shipping. “Creating standards gives owners the tools to measure performance,” says Fon. “And what can be measured can be managed.” Jotun is a key partner in the CHI, having launched Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) in 2020, the world’s first proactive hull cleaning solution. HSS includes a remotely

operated underwater hull cleaning unit (the Jotun HullSkater), which uses nonabrasive brushes to remove fouling before it can attach to the hull, without damaging the antifouling coating. To develop this technology, Jotun worked with a team of partners, including Kongsberg Maritime, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Semcon, Telenor and DNV. “HSS is a good example of how partnerships are key to developing unique

tools to measure and report on performance will help owners avoid the so called ‘dirty hull syndrome’, which is a growing issue for owners,” says Fon.

The digital age

Thanks to Jotun’s premium hull coating SeaQuantum x200 and its Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) in 2010, the company got an early start on developing its own digital services. HPS includes a performance-based guarantee that is calculated using data taken from onboard sensors. With more than 1,400 HPS applications to date, Jotun now has the industry’s most extensive database on hull performance. Based on EU MRV data, Fon estimates that HPS helps lower carbon intensity by an average of 20% per year, all while delivering a return on investment in about the same time period. “Even when more expensive alternative fuels become available, clean hulls will help owners maintain operational efficiency and profitability and limit the risk of invasive species,” Fon says. “We calculated that in 2022 alone, ships using Jotun hull performance coatings avoided 7.9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, so the impact is significant.” “Based on data collected over the course of a decade, we have developed advanced algorithms on hull efficiency to offer enhanced services, such as the Business Impact Calculator and Jotun Voyager, a decision support tool helping customers select the right hull coatings for individual trades,“ he adds. “And last year, we launched HullKeeper, a digital platform to help ship operators optimise hull performance, using remotely operated inspection drones, ROVs and other technologies, regardless of the applied coating.“

Currently with two 80m flagships in build, the Anconabased yard, which forms part of the Palumbo Superyachts network, has unveiled a new Sportivo line that aims to breathe new life into contemporary design.

Speaking on his experience of the marine market in UAE, Abdulla reports the market as being stable, even during the pandemic. “It’s positive to see UAE boatbuilders getting more international attention than 10 to 15 years ago because buyers are realising the quality of yachts – both interior and exterior – on offer here,” he says. “The export market is growing at a rapid rate, particularly in Saudi Arabia which is adding to the demand in the UAE and shows no signs of slowing down over the next 10 years at least.”
