Dear Parents and Carers, Geography fieldwork Year 9 chose the best day of the week to visit the seaside town of Llandudno to complete their Geography fieldwork. The sun shone as students worked hard to collect information, which will form the basis of their studies on their current unit of work Tourism. House Competition Tutor groups have just 6 days left in which to prepare items for their craft and cookery display table. The table top arrangements will be exhibited at the Year 7 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 10 October. Students will be creating a poem, a picture, a cake, flower arrangement and other items under the theme of ‘Harvest’. I look forward to seeing a magnificent array of cakes and vegetables in the shape of an animal! Assemblies The theme of this week’s assembly was eSafety. Students were made aware of the misuse of social media and in particular the dangers of posting photographs and information on platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram and many others. The assembly also highlighted the consequences of cyberbullying and the devastating effect this has on young people. Students were reminded of the school policy on mobile phones and the duty of care schools have to protect young people. Policies can be found in the student planner and on the school website. Students were advised to be SMART online. Safe – Keep your personal information such as passwords safe. You would not give them out to a stranger in the street. Meeting – Do not meet up with anyone you speak to online through things such as gaming and social media. Always know who you are talking to. Accept – Think before you accept a friend request or a file from someone you do not know. Reliable – Make sure you know who you are talking to as not everyone online is trustworthy. People lie about their age. Tell – Tell a parent, teacher or a friend if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable online. Cyber Safety Guidance for Parents It has been brought to our attention that the game ’Roblox’ may pose risks to your child’s safety online. Roblox is a game creation system platform that has links to other platforms some of which may be inappropriate for young students. We therefore strongly recommend that any usage of Roblox is supervised by parents as any account restrictions do not prevent contact with strangers. Mobile Phone Safety With rapidly changing technology and easier access to a wide variety of information, some of which may be unsuitable for young people, it is important that you monitor what your child is looking at on their mobile phone. Theatre Trip On Tuesday, 91 Year 10 students attended an incredible performance of ‘An Inspector Calls’ at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury. The staging of the performance was impressive and students were engaged by the original and energetic performances. There was even more excitement when we found out that one of the actors had starred in Harry Potter! It was a fantastic event that will prepare Year 10 students for their GCSE English Literature exam this summer.
