Brickbox Surveys Helping you make an informed decision about the home you want to buy

Your home is likely to be the biggest investment of your life, yet many buyers do not commission an independent survey on its condition.

Do I really need a survey? ‘Which?’ magazine found that for those people who did not get a survey, on average, one in four had to spend £2,500 to put serious defects right which would have been identified in a condition report. For one in ten people it was over £10,000. By contrast those that did get a proper survey were able to negotiate a reduction in the price of the property that averaged £2,000.

Home Condition Survey Carried out by an experienced, fully qualified, accredited and insured residential property surveyor. It gives you a plain English, professional report on the condition of the property using a simple 1/2/3 condition rating, annotated photographs and a jargon free approach. We offer a fast, comprehensive and competitive service to inspect your new home for all the major defects which are likely to affect your decision to purchase.

Benefits include Peace of Mind

• Identifies major problems • Highlights areas of possible concern that need further investigation • Help you to plan for future expenditure

Your report will include information about:

• Building condition and defects • Structural movement • Damp, rot and woodworm • Heating, water and electrical services • Alterations and additions • Drains • Environmental issues • Health and safety • Matters for your conveyancer • Rebuilding Insurance reinstatement cost

Your local specialist provider of: • Home Condition Surveys • Energy Performance Certificates

Into The Wild

Wildlife photography is a huge challenge, both technically and artistically, and also in predicting the behaviour of the animal subjects and reacting quickly enough to capture their actions. By Georgia Lambert

M

ulti-award winning wildlife photographer, 25-year-old Alannah Hawker from Merstham not only takes great wildlife photos but also shares a unique relationship with a family of wild, urban foxes. “I love photographing beautiful British wildlife as I feel that a lot of the animals are under appreciated. My favourite animal to photograph is the fox and although they get a bad reputation from the press, they are actually fascinating animals.’ “I have been lucky enough to follow the same fox family for about five years and from what I have observed, they are incredibly caring animals. I love watching the bond between the family and the little’uns, they never get boring” said Alannah. After watching the cubs grow up, Alannah was happy to see that one of the cubs – a vixen named Jack remain in the original territory and have cubs of her own. Watching Jack every year since birth, Alannah has managed

to build up a relationship with the wild vixen. Now, Jack treats Alannah as one of her own, allowing her to see intimate events usually hidden from human eyes. It was this special relationship that led to Alannah’s documentation of fox life and the footage of Jack was used on Channel 4’s Foxes Live in May 2012. The following year, Alannah placed a night-vision camera under her shed where Jack chose to den, the footage was streamed live around the world as Cubcam. This breakthrough earned her an invitation to be a guest on BBC’s Springwatch Extra to discuss her work. Alannah’s work has taken her all over the country, working with her partner Lawrie Brailey and

winning awards for her candid photos of animals in their natural habitat. From having a two page spread in Photography Monthly to gaining highly acclaimed awards in the British Wildlife Photography Awards for three years running and her work has been included in touring exhibitions of the UK. Alannah has always had an interest in wildlife and photography ever since she was young, but did not think to mix them together until she was studying art and since that day, she has not looked back. Alannah, says: “I find most of my inspiration in my subjects. I love being able to watch and observe wildlife, capturing snapshots of their lives in their habitats and sharing them with people.” Patience is a virtue when it comes to wildlife photography, and Alannah is currently trying to find the ideal spot to photo the perfect shot of the sneaky and eluding reptiles, wild owls and badgers.

Alannah gives talks about her work and the relationship with her foxes, and she also often holds exhibitions in and around Surrey. Her work is all handmade and is available to buy through her website: www.alannahhawker.com For more information, visit Alannah’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ AlannahHawkerPhotography

Meet The Caring Stripey Stork Most storks heading for the nursery have only a 7lb bundle of joy to carry, but there is one stork which comes with baby’s toys, clothes and equipment as well! By Sarah Ballingal

S

tarted in 2013, Stripey Stork is the idea of Nicola Dawes - her two children were growing fast, and Nicola was keen that the items no longer needed were passed on to families in difficulty. She spoke to support agencies and was told that such items were required they had no facilities to store or sort them before distribution. Undeterred, Nicola sought to find a solution, and with a little help from her friends, word travelled fast and soon donations, both new and pre-loved, were arriving from all over the area. Taking referrals from the agencies supporting local families in need - health visitors, social workers and children’s centres, the scheme took off and now Stripey Stork operates from a 2,000 sq ft warehouse in Redhill. The stock is attractively displayed in defined areas, and Nicola and her team deal with the referrals from health professionals and support workers, meaning they can easily make choices based on their clients’ needs. The organised stock means that any emergency requests can be swiftly assembled and the charity has become indispensable to social services and charities. Stripey Stork prides itself on passing on items in good condition – items are cleaned, and safety checked where necessary. They want the families who receive these donations to feel they are receiving a gift and not a handout. Celebrating its 4th anniversary this month the charity has so far responded to 3,000 requests for help, giving out a million pounds’ worth of items. There is no geographical limit to the service

although it is often 20-30 mile radius. There is a core team of 30 volunteers along with more than 100 others who help out. Nicola is grateful to her volunteers and proud that the Santa Stork Team was awarded the Reigate and Banstead Mayor’s Award in recognition of their work during Stripey Stork’s 2016 Christmas Campaign. Closed during August, except for emergencies, Stripey Stork is back in action in September and will be focusing on their Santa Stork 2017 campaign. Christmas is a stressful and costly time for most people, but for struggling families, it can be especially worrying. The support the team receive from the community to run the Christmas campaign is so important, and there are lots of ways to help. There will be an Amazon wish list available where donors can choose an item for a child who would otherwise receive little at Christmas. These go straight to the charity so people can get involved where they live. The charity relies on the support of those who make financial donations online. In October donations are doubled by local giving resluting in the team supporting more. For more information about Stripey Stork, visit: www.stripeystork.org.uk or visit it’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/stripeystork or follow on Twitter or Instagram: @stripeystork

COMMUNITY

Finance Company Build Big To Help Community’s Young Earlier this summer more than 300 staff from Santander Consumer Finance beat the British weather as they volunteered their time to a building project based at Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre on the Ashdown Forest to improve facilities for the community youth organisation – London Youth. By Jacob White

T

he Hindleap Project started in early 2017 when a committee of 20 employees was formed. For the actual build itself in June which took place over seven days, more than 300 members of Santander Group staff took part – including colleagues from PSA Finance, Hyundai Capital and Santander Bank. Santander Consumer Finance is focused on staff development and one of the ways it has found enables employees to be the best that they can possibly be is to take part in local community projects, and this is something the organisation does as a group as part of the Santander is You week. Every year, Santander Consumer Finance takes part in a community project known as The Big Build and this year, London Youth at Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre was chosen by a panel of judges to be charity for staff to undertake a large project, and soon a Big Build committee sprang into action. A Group wide communication was issued to all staff inviting them to take part, and the response was incredible. Many new employees stepped forward to take part as well as staff who had taken part in years gone by. Staff came from across the UK with some flying down from Scotland to volunteer. Fiona Woodhouse, from Santander Consumer, said: “Everyone was just amazing. Everyone worked tirelessly to make the project a success with the aim of providing two highly interactive facilities for the 10,500 young people who visit Hindleap Warren each year.” The weather proved to be the biggest challenge facing the volunteers – on the first day of the build, the rain poured down. However, staff made the decision to carry on regardless, they were not going to be defeated. Days later, the sun came out and it became very hot, a contrast to a few days before. This was the first time Santander Consumer Finance had taken on board a project of this scale. There were effectively two projects running sideby-side at Hindleap Warren – obstacle course and high ropes - and they were both outdoors and at the mercy of the elements.

On this project there was a focus on providing each volunteer with the opportunity to both start and finish a set task daily. The nature of this project allowed volunteers to do this with different types of climbing obstacles being constructed and thus helping volunteer see the value in their efforts. Speaking about the project, Fiona said: “Other than physical aches and pains, there was a sense of well-being and one of personal achievement. Many volunteers had never taken part in anything like this before and to find out that they could actually create something each day was so rewarding. Some even wanted to put their names down for our next Big Build in 2018!” Tony Smith, head of Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre, added: “We are thrilled with our new obstacle course and high ropes circuit, achieved with the help of Santander Consumer Finance. All of our 10,500 young visitors each year will be able to enjoy these activities, whatever their ability.”

Volunteers Views

Staff from Santander gave the following remarks: “Excellent experience – loved to help’’ “Great fun as always” “Great team work” “It makes me very happy that I could contribute to a happy childhood” “I can see the smiles on the kid’s faces already”

How Can An Osteopath Help Your Sporting Life?

Whether you are an athlete or cricketer drawing the season to a close, or a footballer or rugby player gearing up for the new season, how can an osteopath help make sure that you are match-fit and ready to go? Also, what can they do to help you post-match to make sure you feel a sense of wellbeing? By Jacob White

P

laying sport and doing regular exercise is good for your health, but sometimes sport can result in injuries caused by a fall or heavy blow, not warming up properly, using inappropriate equipment or poor technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of the body can be injured including the muscles, bones, joints and tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The most commonly affected areas vulnerable to both summer and winter sports injuries are the ankles and the knees. What Is Osteopathy And How Can Osteopaths Help? Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging muscles and joints based on the principle that health and wellbeing is based on bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues working together. An osteopath’s aim is to: • Increase the mobility of joints • Relieve muscle tension • Enhance blood supply to tissue • Help the body heal An osteopath can help with: • Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Arthritis • Problems with the pelvis, hips and legs

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

Does osteopathy work? Many patients argue that it does work and it is especially effective in treating persistent lower back pain and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the treatment for those with the condition. Who can treat me in osteopathy? Osteopathy is not widely available on the NHS but your GP should be able to tell you whether it is available in your area but most patients pay for osteopathy treatment privately with treatment costs varying for different sessions. You do not need to be referred by your GP to see a private osteopath, a top tip is that most private health insurers provide cover for osteopathic treatment but do see your policy for more details. Importantly, when you are looking for an osteopath, only practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) are allowed to practise as osteopaths or call themselves osteopaths.

The Complimentary View My third, monthly article dealing with the questions I am asked by my patients and the advice I give to them, concerns exercise... Specifically, I want to talk about the value of the simplest exercise of them all: Walking! When I was about five years old, my sister and I used to have breakfast with my grandparents. More often than not, my granddad would be running late and my grandma would tell him that if he didn’t get a move on, he would miss his bus. He’d say; “Never mind, if I miss it, I will just have to take Shanks’ pony”. For several years, I believed that if he missed his bus, a very kind man called Mr Shanks would lend him his pony! Of course, it was just his way of saying that he would have to walk!

Shanks’ Pony

T

o my grandfather’s generation, walking was a way of life. Most people, particularly those who were not very well off, walked everywhere! Things are very different now because we have access to so many different ways of getting around. I honestly think that many of us are missing out on the very best exercise there is! Yes, of course, there are exercise forms which have greater aerobic benefits or which make your muscles stronger and these are essential if you want to participate in various sports. However, walking is available to almost all of us, it requires little or no special equipment and is possible throughout most of our lives. I believe that human beings are natural walkers. It is the way that our ancestors have been getting around for thousands of years. I also believe that most of us are not natural runners or swimmers or cyclists. All these things can be fun, (although, personally, I have

20

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

my doubt about running) and will keep you fit, but for most of us, they will put stresses and strains on our bodies which, walking (properly) will not do. I am often asked by my patients if they should take up jogging. More often than not, I suggest walking is the better option. There is so much less impact to the ankle, knee and hip joints. Power walking and, specifically, Nordic walking, with poles, is about the best exercise there is. Joining a walking group is a great idea. There are many local groups who have regular organised walks (usually with a pub stop half way!) which are fun and very sociable. The gait mechanism when walking correctly is so beneficial. It uses most of our muscles as they were designed to be used. It is great for core strength and has cardio-vascular benefits. It is low impact and energy efficient. It encourages good posture, is great fun and is absolutely free! What’s not to like? Jump on Shanks’ pony!

PET CARE

Helping Your Pet Stay Cool This Summer When we get hot we can remove a layer - however, our furry friends are less fortunate. Follow these tips to keep your pooch or puss cool this summer. By Shelley Welti

S

ummer is here! However, while we have all been longing for scorching summer days, our pets can get hot and bothered quickly. In fact, all it takes is a matter of minutes for cats and dogs to overheat, which could lead to them needing vet treatment. To keep your furry friend happy and not too hot this summer, we have out together our top tips: Watch When You Go Walkies It might be more convenient to go for a walk after lunch or when picking the kids up from school, but it could be too hot then for our pooches. Instead, pound the streets in the morning or the evening when it is cooler – making for a relaxing start or end to the day too!

Never Leave Them In A Car We have all heard the saying dogs die in hot cars, and many dogs still die each year from being left in hot cars. Temperatures still soar even with the window open, . Leave your four-legged friend at home where they are safe and in the shade! Visit Your Vet Should you have any concerns about your furry friend, it is always best to visit your vet. Signs of heat stroke include panting, dehydration, drooling more than usual, no or little urine, red gums and rapid heart beating. If your puss or pooch has any of these signs, take them to your vet for a check-up.

Find Them A Shady Spot Ensure there are shady spots in the garden and encourage your pet to sit in the shade. Let them keep cool under a tree, a table or even a parasol for afternoons enjoying the warmth, without getting too hot. Make Sure They Are Well-watered Water is vital for keeping your pet healthy and never more important than in summer. Put out extra bowls, swap dry food for wet and check they are drinking enough. Keep An Eye On At-risk Breeds Cats and dogs with snub noses, like Persians, and bulldogs have smaller airways, making it harder for them to release heat when they pant. If you have an at-risk breed, keep a close eye on them, as they are more likely to struggle when it is warm. Give Them A Good Brush Not only a bonding activity, and a necessity for furry friends, but brushing detangles matting which can keep heat in. However, do not go crazy with the clippers, speak to your groomer – fur that keeps our pets warm in the winter can keep them cool in the summer.

MOTORING

Smartphone Apps To Save You Money On Your Car Insurance

Ever get the feeling that you are being watched? If you have got a smartphone, you probably are! That is a conversation for another day, however, thanks to technology, younger drivers are now able to get apps on their phone to help reduce their insurance premiums. By Ben Morley

T

he technology means you can get an app that will sit somewhere between Angry Birds and Snap Chat - other apps are available, that will monitor what you are up to behind the wheel and then, taking circumstances into consideration score your driving accordingly. Using GPS technology the Octo U app tracks the driver’s speed, braking, cornering and acceleration. While it is doing this, it keeps an eye on what time of day it is and what the weather and traffic are like, and possibly

even what you are listening to on the radio. After 100 hours of driving the app sends your score to your insurance company – the aim of the game, this is what it has become now, is to get a good score. Unlike a real driving game, you do not win by driving fast, the better you drive, the better the score is. A better score helps to reduce your insurance premiums, and Octo U reports that by using this app, drivers could save up to 30% on their annual car insurance premiums. Quite a lot when you consider

that the average under-25-yearold pays around £1,700 for insurance. The app is free, however, it cannot tell if it is you or a friend driving, so if you have any mates that are bad drivers, leave your phone at home for that journey. Currently, only three UK insurers take data from the Octo U app, but it could still be worth considering when renewal time comes around for young drivers hitting the roads.

HOMES

How To Create The Perfect Guest Room The summer holidays are here and the number of guests passing through the home is up, but just how do you create the perfect guest room? Here are some ideas to make your guest feel at home! By Jacob White

W

hether you are hosting friends, your mother-in-law or your parents are spending the summer holidays with you to help with childcare, or if it is your children returning home from university for the summer, what simple additions can you make to a spare room make sure it has a wow factor? Bags of Books One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else’s home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have wall-shelving or a bookcase, stock with a variety of good quality reading that appeals to all tastes. Do not forget to add some bright bedside lamps or reading lights! Case Closed Add a fold-up luggage stand, this hotel-inspired touch saves guests from having to squat on the floor to rifle through their suitcases for items. Make sure it is accessible and ready at the foot of the bed. Accessorise Whether you put them in the bathroom or in the bedroom, little extras make guests feel special. Taking more inspiration from hotel visits - include toiletries and niceties in case of forgotten items such as mini toothpaste, an extra toothbrush, emery boards and small bottles of hand lotion.

36

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Pillow Delight Some like them flat, some like them fluffy. Keep a range of pillows ready to satisfy guests’ individual tastes and do not forget to invest in tasteful blankets, you never know with the British weather! Get Hooked Your guests will not have a designated spot in your home to tuck away jumpers, purses and car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks on the backs of doors, or in easily accessible areas of their guest room. Remember to have plenty of coat hangers available for outdoor clothes. Say It With Flowers There is nothing as welcoming as freshly cut flowers, keep the arrangement simple though. Stick a few cut blooms from your garden in a jug for a fresh

and vibrant welcome but try to avoid flowers with overpowering scents that can lead to headaches. Do not forget about guests with allergies! Right On Time Ensure that guests do not miss a planned activity, or breakfast by placing a small clock in their room, whether just for them to keep time, or for them to set the alarm for an early morning wake-up call. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall… Hang a mirror, large or small in the room to provide the perfect spot for your guest to comb their hair, touch up makeup or put on jewellery. If space allows, a long dressing mirror is an even better addition for guests who have a sense of style and want to look tip-tip from head to toe this summer.

Designing A Child-Friendly Garden For children the summer holidays and the garden go hand-in-hand – a great place for smashing balls around, running about with the dog, or having friends round for fun and games. However, this can be at odds with the view of a garden to parents or grandparents, so, what can you do to help this? By Jacob White

F

or most families, the first area of priority is somewhere to relax, eat or entertain outside - a sitting area where you can put out garden furniture and set up the barbecue is the answer, screened off with a low hedge, or some heavy containers, filled with easy-going plants – herbs are a good choice. Most people make their seating area close to the house, usually right outside patio doors where it is convenient but when the back of the house is in shade for most of the day, it is often better to put the seating area further down the garden, where it catches the sun for the longest amount of time. Think about a dedicated play area which relieves the adult garden of a lot of wear and tear. If you are looking to mark out sports pitches or place climbing frames or a playhouse use a ground surface with hard-wearing rye-grass or bark chippings. A lock-up garden chest is a good idea for garden toys. To prevent balls, dogs or small children in neighbours’ gardens, plant banks of shrubs around boundaries. Choose hardy varieties such forsythia or philadelphus, avoiding prickly ones such as berberis or pyracantha. Other ideas include climbers such as honeysuckle or thornless blackberry. The adult area of the garden is where you can house the more delicate features such as perennial flowerbeds, container garden, raised flowerbeds, greenhouse or decorative vegetable patch. These are best safely separated from the places children play by a soft barrier that is ball and bike proof!

A row of fruit trees, a hedge or an ornamental tree and shrub border makes an attractive and at the same time, practical divider. Alternatively, use ornamental trellis with climbers. If limited for space, a row of woven hazel or heather panels with an arch through into your next area does the trick! A child-friendly garden does not have to remain the same, keep it under review. As the children grow older, you might like to replace the play area and introduce an area for them to find a quiet space for them to complete their homework or meet friends in a relaxed and safe environment.

Play It Safe!

A good place to position a play area is the far end of the garden, but depending on the age of the children you might like the area closer to keep an eye on them. Remember, for their safety to keep gates locked and check for hazards including poisonous plants or garden tools and chemicals. One of the biggest dangers is the much-loved garden pond, however shallow – a toddler can easily fall in.

The Grass Can Be Greener

A

rtificial Grass has come a long way since it was first used as a surface for sports and referred to as Astro-turf. The feel and appearance now make it difficult to tell it’s not the real thing. Fortunately though, artificial grass does not act like real grass, so there are no weeds, no growth, no mud and no need to water it. One of the main benefits is its year round use. Sarah from Reigate had an installation recently. She says “I’m a busy mum with 3 children and no time to tend to a garden. We hadn’t really used the garden since moving in 2 years ago as it wasn’t child friendly. Now it has been completely transformed. The recent good weather meant I was able to put the paddling pool out, knowing my children were safe. The grass is flat and soft

and perfect for my children and our dog Millie.” “The installation was done by The Grass Is Greener, who did a great job; they were punctual, courteous and very tidy”
