Welcome to our March issue Welcome to the March issue of RH Uncovered. Our big news this month is that we went live with our new website on February 16th and we couldn’t be more proud. If you haven’t already, pop over and have a look - you can find us at www.rhuncovered.co.uk - you won’t be disappointed. The heart of RH magazines has always been local services for local people. That message is at the heart of the website also. Local news, events and of course people in the community, will all be featured. You will also find exclusive deals and an extensive list of events in your area. Back to this month’s magazine. Buggy Buddies, a fantastic initiative set up by a local mum to get you and your baby out, make friends and get fit at the same time. We shine the spotlight on young sports star Emily Whiting and Richard Olliver gives us his last news update before this year’s town council elections. All this and our usual events, health, homes and gardens sections too. We want to hear from you. Are you involved in a club, social group or charity organisation? Maybe there’s a person who you think deserves their story being told? Have you got an event coming up or a special anniversary? Whatever your story, we would love to hear from you. With thanks to all our contributors, advertisers and of course you, our readers.

Shining the Spotlight on Surrey Sports Star:

Emily Whiting At just 16 years old, Horley resident Emily Whiting has already accomplished so much. From taking the title of GB number one to winning two gold and one silver medal at last year’s commonwealth games for taekwondo, it’s clear to see that this Surrey sports star, will go far. We caught up with Emily to hear about her achievements so far and her hopes for the future:

Hello everyone This will be my last article for some months as we have the town council elections in May. The rules preclude members who are standing from involving themselves in pre-election articles in the local press in the run up to the election. The whole of the town council is up for election although only about a half of the current council are standing. Do not confuse us with the General Election as we are only involved in local rather than national issues. Remember what the current council has achieved in the last 4 - Community

“I’ve been doing taekwondo for over ten years,” the Oakwood Secondary School student explains. “My brother had started and I could see it was fun and full of energy. I like a challenge and I am very competitive so I thought this was a great sport to get into!” “If you want to enjoy a sport that’s full of passion, fitness, self-defence, controlled sparring, kicking techniques and choreographed moves then taekwondo is for you!”

my proudest moment so far,” the 2nd Dan black belt tells us.

Over the years, Emily has not only been named Britain’s number one, Surrey Young Sports Personality, Reigate and Banstead Borough Young Sports Personality, become a Silver European medallist AND won three Commonwealth medals, but she also came 12th in the prestigious Poomsae World Championships, held in Mexico, last year too.

So what’s next for our local sports star, who will also be sitting her GCSE’s in just a few months’ time? “I’m currently in training to regain my title as GB number one,” Emily, who trains with Master Derek Sumner at Horley’s Livingwell Taekwondo, continues. “I’m also training to hopefully be chosen to compete at the European Poomsae championships 2015!”

“To be selected to attend the world championships, was great, but also after so many years of getting so close, becoming GB national champion was definitely

We wish Emily lots of luck for her upcoming competitions and exams. We can’t wait to hear more about her future achievements!

four years and those of us who are re-standing would like to continue the good work.

planning applications. We are involved with Horley Carnival and the improvement of the commercial activity of the town.

We try to keep the town attractive by imaginative flower planting in the town centre and our management of the parks and recreation grounds in the town. We won two Silver Gilt awards in South and Southeast in Bloom as a result. Horley in Bloom was again a success along with the photographic competition. Our costs have been kept down which has enabled us to keep our element of the rates unchanged. We try very hard to engage with the local community especially on important issues such as the airport second runway and

There is a lot more that we do and if you wish to know more or be kept informed, please register for the Council e-newsletter on our website www.horleysurrey-tc.gov.uk.

Do You Want to Be a Buggy Buddy? A local mum who wants to shape up and meet new people has started up FREE four mile buggy walks, and would like more people to join her! “I need to lose weight and I have two small children, who I stay at home to look after,” mum of two, Katie Betteley tells us. “ I can’t afford a fancy gym membership and a crèche for them to go to while I plod along the treadmill, so decided get out in the fresh air and walk with the buggy.“ “I had this sad picture in my head of me walking round for hours on my own so I decided to put myself out there and see if anybody else wanted to join me,” Katie, who lives in Langshott, continues. “The main thing is that it doesn’t cost anything!” The Buggy Buddy walks start outside the Farmhouse Pub on Ladbroke Road, Horley every Monday and Friday mornings from 9:45am – subject to wet weather conditions – and provide a great opportunity to get out of the house, meet new people and get fit, for free! “Being a stay at home parent can be lonely, so come and make some new friends and get fit together! Dads, grandparents, aunties etc are welcome too, it’s not just for us mums!” Katie adds. To find out more about Buggy Buddies and see this week’s walks, visit: www.facebook.com/Buggybuddieshorley

24 Hour Horse Charity Needs Your Help! Kilmarnock Horse Rescue, which has been caring for horses across Sussex and Surrey, for over 13 years is looking for a star prize donation for their fundraising event this month. The volunteer-led charity, based at Kilmarnock Farm on Charlwood Road, Crawley currently cares for over thirty horses, but would love to be able to help more animals in need and can only do that with generous donations. “We’re holding a fundraiser on 28th March from 8pm at the Royal Oak Pub in Ifield Green,” charity founder Carol Jackson explains. “The event will have lots of raffle prizes and be a great opportunity for a get together, but we really do need a star prize to auction on the day!” “We know it’s a lot to ask, but if anyone would like to donate something a little bit special, we would really appreciate it… it would be raising muchneeded funds for a good cause!” With monthly winter bills of £300, just for hay alone, the charity which also cares for and re-homes other animals such as pigs, sheep, guinea pigs and cats (to name just a few) needs to raise further funds to be able to continue their high-level of care. “We have seen some awful cases of malnutrition and neglect, but if we can help an animal and save it, we will,” Carol, who lives on-site says. “We rely on donations to pay for necessities like hay, food and bedding, with all money going directly to the welfare of those in our care.” If you’d like to donate a star prize or volunteer your time, please contact Carol on: 07743092023.

Soul Lovers Wanted to Join Local Choir! If you’re a fan of singing soul, funk and Motown tunes - listen up; Shout Chorus wants you to get in the groove and join them! The fun choir, which has been running since 2013, was created by Nikki Franklin who wanted enthusiastic singers to share their love of music, without having to audition or being able to read music. The twenty-five members are currently learning new arrangements, created by Nikki, with soul, funk, gospel, Motown and blues vibes and would like like-minded local residents to join them!

Meeting every Wednesday at St Andrews Church in Furnace Green, Crawley, between 7.30 – 9pm, the group regularly perform in the community, with live musicians – giving members the opportunity to showcase their vocal talents! The first visit to choir is free and new members can just drop in! However, if you’d like more information, please visit: www.shoutchorus.co.uk or email: info@shoutchorus.co.uk.

“Nikki has created this dynamic, fun, friendly choir to give local singers an opportunity to sing professional quality arrangements, completely by ear,” Shout Chorus member and Horley resident, Trudy Gillard says. “She is an absolute inspiration and has a unique way of teaching. It’s such a feel good factor when we achieve a finished piece!”

Adrenaline Enthusiasts Wanted! Thrill-seekers are required for St Catherine’s Hospice next exciting fundraising challenge – a superherothemed abseil, taking place in Crawley next month. The local hospice is asking you to unleash your inner superhero and take on a daredevil 100ft abseil at Superhero Headquarters, the Sandman Hotel, Tinsley Lane South, Crawley on Saturday 18 April, all to raise further funds for hospice care. “Whether you descend on your own as a personal mission, with a group of friends or with work colleagues, you won’t need to make a quick escape when you reach the top and see the spectacular views,” Michaela Clements from St Catherine’s Hospice says. “All you’ll need is a good sense of balance and the ability to control your nerves; it’s not for the fainthearted!” “Be your own Clark Kent or Wonder Woman; join in the fun and dress up as your favourite superhero. Think along the lines of Superman, Batman, The Hulk, and Catwoman be as creative as you like!” 10 - Community

Or, if you have your very own work A-Team, why not take on the exclusive corporate abseil on Friday 17th April? Sign up your team of four and if you recruit ten superheroes your CEO can abseil for FREE! One such superhero taking on the challenge is RH Uncovered Magazine director, Matthew Arnold. Swapping his usual suit and tie for a costume, Matthew, who lives in Crawley Down, can’t wait to show his support for our local hospice… even if it does mean him abseiling 100ft in Lycra. “One of my goals for 2015 is to do more for our community and hopefully inspire our readers to do the same,” Matthew explains.

All those over the age of 13 can take part (although parental consent is required for those aged 18 and under), so what are you waiting for?

Grab your costume and become a hospice hero! For more information please call Louise or Michaela on 01293 447364 or e-mail events@stch.org.uk. Pictures from Matthew and Emma (our Community Projects Manager)‘s abseil will also be on Facebook and Twitter after the event, so don’t forget to pop on over and see how they got on!

“Abseiling for St Catherine’s, who cared for my partner’s father back in 2011, is just the first step... just watch this space!” Registration costs £25pp and fundraising superheroes are asked to raise a heroic £150 each (minimum) in sponsorship.

The Power of Performance Classes

While many children may wish to take up dance, acting or music classes with the hope of becoming the next Beyoncé, Brad Pitt or Ed Sheeran; it’s believed that these fun, performance-based activities can actually boost a child’s other skills, including reading, listening and self-confidence.

“My child lacked confidence and found it hard to interact with others,” one local mum tells us. “While she was shy and a little overwhelmed by starting her ballet class, at first, she now can’t wait to go and see her new friends.

The improvement we’ve seen in her – not only with A variety of studies have shown her communication, but also with attention and that expressive arts classes positive attitude, has also attribute to improving definitely made a difference.” creativity, self-esteem and team-working skills; vital Jill McGrogan from Bullfrog must-haves for on-going Productions, also agrees: development. “children come to us with little confidence and However, with many schools communication skills but running limited – or no – I have seen these kids get performance-based lessons, parents are placing importance up on stage during our productions smiling and on enrolling their children singing and asking Mum and for creative extra-curricular activities; such as dance, drama, Dad; 'Can I do it again please?!’ gymnastics and music. 18 - Children and Education

They love being part of a group with the same interests and soon make many new friends.” “Seeing young people blossom as they discover new-found confidence is wonderful. The performing arts definitely helps with their life skills and we have had numerous comments from parents and teachers about how they are more communicative, happy and outgoing since joining our group.” With so many great local performance groups, available for your child to join, the hardest thing will be for them to choose just one!

What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. The true cost of a kitchen So you’re planning to fit a new kitchen. But how do you ensure value for money? Here’s the lowdown on where to start, what to look for and all the questions to ask. By Katherine Sorrell. Designing your kitchen Using an architect or interior designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or for the job, and what’s included – from simple outline sketches, to detailed drawings, assistance with planning applications, specifying suppliers, appointing contractors and supervising the entire process. At the other end of the scale, you could design it yourself for free, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Remember that this will mean managing the project every step of the way. Many people go for the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. Alternatively, if you are using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a few hundred pounds for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings specific to your room. Comparing prices What’s included when you buy a kitchen? It varies widely, from a basic delivery of flat-packed cupboards to an all-encompassing service. 28 - Homes

When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps, appliances and extras such as plate racks and knife holders? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service? Checking for quality The main difference between buying an off-the-shelf kitchen from one of the budget suppliers and a pricier kitchen from a mid-price or luxury supplier is that the former will give you machine-made units that come off a factory line, whereas the latter offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. Machine-made units are not necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, which are individually made to fit perfectly inside their frames.

to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are usually cheaper, and are considered easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machinesprayed, or painted by hand with a brush. Worktops Very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood, granite, man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete. They’re more expensive, but they will last longer and look better. Hinges Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

Doors

Carcasses

Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are often considered the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity (though the thicker they are, the less chance there is of this). A good supplier will offer an after-sales service

Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 18-20mm is a good guide. To advertise call - 01293 824088

If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. 36 - Gardens

You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood.com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money.

Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products. To advertise call - 01293 824088

Testing Times

It comes but once a year and it can cause lots of stress if you aren’t prepared for it. We’re not talking about Christmas, Easter or Auntie Flo’s birthday, we’re talking about your car being due for it’s annual Ministry Of Transport test. Yes, when MOT time rolls around it can be stressful, and should it fail you suddenly realise just how much you rely on your car and how much you actually need it. Not to mention how much it may end up costing you, even if there was a whole heap of discount on that MOT in the first place. A lot of vehicles will fail their MOT due to un-necessary things such as worn tyres, lights that don’t work or no fluid in the washer bottle. Whilst some garages wont charge to fit some of these simple parts, some will. With these ten checks you can anticipate any troubles and avoid a larger than expected bill for that MOT pass certificate. Of course wait for your vehicle to cool down before checking/changing anything that might be hot. Headlights and indicators All of these must work properly, so check the headlights (main and dipped beam), sidelights, rear lights, hazard warning lights (ignition on and off ) and finally indicators. If you have clear lenses, the light emitted needs to clearly be orange. Brake lights Get a friend/partner to check that the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal. This has got to include any additional brake lights at the top of the rear screen or similar. If you’ve got no-one handy, get the car close to a garage door or a window and look in the mirror – you should get a good idea. Number plate Give this a wipe, it sounds silly but if it’s not legible it can fail. Also, if you have a personalised plate, the spacing must comply. Wheels and tyres A quick check for damage is a good start. The legal tread depth for tyres is 1.6mm as far as an MOT is concerned, but it’s good practice to get them changed when they are down to 3mm. Windscreen If you’ve got any chips or cracks larger than 40mm in your windscreen, it will fail. This reduces to just 10mm if the damage is in front of the driver. 44 - Motoring

Windscreen wipers Check that the rubbers aren’t split or damaged and also check that they clear the screen. Horn Give it a press, if it makes a noise, you’ll be fine. Seats and Seatbelts All seats must be securely fitted, with the driver’s seat being able to adjust forwards and backwards. Pull out each seatbelt, checking for any damage to the material. Tug sharply on each belt to ensure it reacts as it should if you had to brake hard. Screenwash Always top up your screenwash before going for an MOT – something as simple as a splash of water could end in a fail at some test centres. Fuel and engine oil Make sure that the oil level is as it should be and also make sure it has enough fuel. A test centre could turn you away if either of these are low as it will mean that they are unable to carry out emissions testing. By Ben Morley
