Roads and Judges Circuits We all take roads for granted. It is difficult to imagine a time when there were not so many of them, and most comprised trodden down earth which, hopefully, would be dry enough to enable you to walk along them. It was proposed to create a new one in 1813 from Pease Pottage to Whitely Hill and from thence to Turners Hill and East Grinstead. This was intended to assist in the movement of prisoners who were being held at Horsham or at East Grinstead, at a time when the assizes alternated between the two towns. They had to walk to the appropriate town and chains were used to persuade them not to try to escape.

The road is shown on the first Tithe Map as a corridor approximately 45 feet wide. However, this road was never built. The existing road from Pease Potage almost reaches the railway. It is then bridged by what was a standard London to Brighton South Coast railway bridge presumably built in approximately 1841. There is a track to the east of the railway, but no evidence that there was any road construction. In 1794, locally the full judges “circuit” itself moved around from London to Hoddlesdon, Hertford, Epping, Ongar, Chelmsford, Gravesend, Rochester, Maidstone, Tunbridge, East Grinstead, Croydon , Kingston and thence back to London.

However, only Hertford, Chelmsford and Kingston were used on every circuit. Summer assizes (for serious crimes) were held alternately at Guildford and Croydon (for Surrey) and Lewes and Horsham (for Sussex). In 1812, East Grinstead was no longer being mentioned in a circuit. It seems that some unlucky prisoners would have had to spend some time in their local lock-up before they were called to the assizes! By Peter Gwynne of Horley’s History Society

Stoolball

Season Starts Again! Stoolball, a sport dating back to the 15th century and now only played in Sussex, Surrey and Kent, starts a new season this month. But what is it? And how is it played? To find out more we caught up with Alyson Wright from the Charlwood Ladies Stoolball team, who play their first game on 16th April: “I first took up Stoolball in 1990. I personally love team sports,” Alyson tells us. “It’s great fun and good exercise. It’s nice to play sport like this with your friends. We take our matches very seriously but also we like to have a laugh too.”

So how do you actually play it? “Stoolball is a team sport which has been played for over 500 years,” the Charlwood Ladies captain explains.

“Similar to cricket, two teams, of eleven compete to score the most runs. It is played by ladies-only teams, mixed teams and schools.” “We, as the Charlwood team are in our 4th Season. Previously to this we played at Smallfield and then a few years before that we were Horley, which was established back in the 1980’s.” The club, which plays in the Surrey Ladies Stoolball league and whose home pitch is Charlwood Village Green, has eighteen members ranging in age from 15 to 50 and include airport staff, students, teachers, office workers and a shoe designer.

Would you like to play? “Come along to watch and see if you fancy having a go! All our players are mixed ability, some good batters, some good bowlers and some good fielders. All I’d say you need is good eye/hand co-ordination!” Find out more by visiting: www.stoolball.org.uk/charlwoodladies

Taking the Plunge for Charity

Dig out those swimming costumes, grab those goggles and make a splash in this year’s Swimathon, taking place at Horley Leisure Centre on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April.

and is supported by the England team’s 2014 Commonwealth Games coach Jolyon Finck, Olympic Gold medallist (and Swimathon President) Duncan Goodhew and TV presenter, Linda Barker.

Swimmers of all aged and abilities will take on either distances of 1.5K, 2.5K or 5K in sessions throughout the weekend – all going that extra length for a good cause.

Founded in 1986, Swimathon is the world’s biggest fundraising swim and has raised over £40 million for charities, so far, including; Comic Relief, Macmillan Cancer Support, NSPCC, The British Heart Foundation and The Prince’s Trust.

“We’re looking for swimmers who are up to the challenge to help make this the biggest and best Swimathon yet,” Marie Curie Community Fundraiser, Fiona Dodd says. “In previous years, lots of swimmers have taken part in Horley and combined with other pools locally, raised a brilliant £82,465.15 for Marie Curie – a really fantastic achievement that we hope to smash this year!”

“Swimathon provides motivation and a personal challenge to swimmers nationwide,” Duncan Goodhew explains.

This year’s event will be raising funds for Marie Curie, which every year cares for 40,000 people facing terminal illnesses

“It also offers a goal to train for, a target to achieve and a great cause to support.” To sign up for Swimathon visit: www.swimathon.org – but be quick, entry closes on 15th April!

Charlwood Sports and Community Centre Build to Start After raising the £470,000 needed to start the building of the Charlwood Sports and Community Centre, local residents will be pleased to hear that the demolition of the aging pavilion and building of the new facilities are to start over the coming months.

Community Centre is now a reality,” Charlwood Parish Councillor Penny Shoubridge says. “If all goes well the works will be completed by November this year and the new pavilion will open just in time for our Charlwood at Christmas event.”

However, further funding is still needed to finalise the build and it’s hoped that this money can be raised through upcoming community events, including the Charlwood Village Fete, dog show and skittles tournament, so remember to go along and show your support!

It’s hoped that by June, work will have started and that the project will be complete in time for the anticipated Charlwood at Christmas event. “I am delighted and excited that after lots of consultations and meetings, writing funding bids and community fundraising the new Sports and 6 - Community

London Temple Visitors’ Centre Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – The Mormons

You Are Invited!

The London Temple Visitors’ Centre invites you to join with millions of people throughout the world who will listen to inspired messages during the 185th Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The conference will be translated into 94 different languages and will be viewed in 197 countries and territories. The core belief of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that God lives and loves us and has sent His Son to save us from death and sin. Prophets before Christ’s time foretold His coming. Apostles at His time testified that He was the promised Messiah. In our day, apostles and prophets lead The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, just as the original apostles and prophets did in their time. They also testify that Christ lives today.

The Christus, by Thorvaldsen

Every six months these modern apostles and prophets speak in a General Conference. The next conference will be on Saturday, the 4th, and Sunday, the 5th, of April. On both days, two two-hour sessions will be available on lds.org. The first session begins at 5:00 p.m. and the second at 9:00 p.m. GMT. If you miss a session or want to go back to see a session again, just return to lds.org. No user names or passwords are required. What a wonderful way to celebrate Easter, by listening to living witnesses of the living Christ! We invite you to join in. Come listen to a prophet’s voice and hear the word of God. Then, if you have questions or want further information, come to the London Temple Visitors’ Centre.

Hooray for St George’s Day! St George’s Day (Thursday 23rd April) has always been a celebrated tradition here in Horley, but over the last four years, the festivities have become even bigger – all thanks to community group, Horley Association of Traders (HATs)! This year’s annual community celebrations will take place on Saturday 25th April, between 10am -5pm in the High Street and boasts a patriotic red and white theme, with HATs encouraging residents and shop owners alike to dress up for the big day!

The exciting event will start with a parade from Horley’s Young People’s Centre on Albert Road from 12pm and will be led by the Redhill Corps of Drums and St. George, a must-see - especially if your child entered the dragon colouring in competition, launched in schools by HAT’s back in February, as the winner’s design will be parading with St George!

“People signed up last year for this year’s celebrations because the day was so good. Volunteers are desperately needed so please help out.”

As usual; Horley’s High Street will be lined with lots of stalls, selling the wares of local suppliers and also showcasing our community groups. There will also be live entertainment shining the spotlight on talented residents and a charity fashion show taking place throughout the day.

To spare your time or to find out more, contact HATs on horleyassociationoftraders@ outlook.com.

“HATS has already had a tremendous response to the day with over 30 stalls already lined-up,” Chris White, Horley’s local high street butcher, tells us.

Just a few examples of volunteering roles required to ensure that these feel good festivities go without a hitch, include: marshalls and sellers for raffle tickets, stalls and memorabilia.

Over To You What do You Love about the Annual Event? “We love the fact that it is a real community event. Great atmosphere, and community spirit. It’s always great to see people, groups and organisations doing something positive for their town!” – Horley Town via Facebook. “Young people love getting involved in the St. George’s Day parade and they especially love dressing up! In previous years we have had a stall in the bustling town centre and it has always been a great day enjoyed by all the young people at the centre.” – Stephanie Gibson, Youth and Community Worker, HYPC.

Spiced rack of lamb With fragrant rice Serves 4 - Ready in 1 Hour Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavour. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce. Ingredients 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges 50g butter 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 750ml vegetable stock Generous pinch saffron strands 50g sultanas

40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds

Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 2 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve.

Meanwhile, heat the butter in a 3 heavy-based pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic.

Tip: Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets.

Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring.

Cover the pan with a tight 4 fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Carve the lamb racks into individual 1 Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over 5 cutlets and serve immediately with the lamb racks. Place the racks in an the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges. oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges.

Getting A Grip The tyres on your car are the only points of contact between you and the roads that you drive on. Those four small patches of rubber have got plenty to deal with too. Safety in accelerating, braking, steering and cornering all depend on those four footprints. So it goes without saying that it’s important to make sure that your tyres are in good condition at all times. The first, and probably most obvious, area to keep an eye on is how much tread your tyres have got left. The tread is there to give you good grip on wet roads. The grooves in the tread clear water away from the contact patch that your tyre has with the road, and so the shallower these grooves are (as the tyre wears down) the less water will be cleared and the more likely you are to aquaplane.

So take the time to look at the sidewalls, checking for tears or bulges. Don’t run your hands along areas that you can’t see, in case any of the tyres structural metal cords are hanging out. They are sharp! When was the last time that you checked your tyre pressures? You’ll find the information on a sticker somewhere on the car, or in your car’s handbook. These suggested pressures take many things into account and are vital for maximum safety, braking, grip and good tyre life.

The law states that they need to be a minimum of 1.6mm deep across the middle ¾ of the tread. But it is widely recognised that once your tyres have worn down by over 50%, the amount of grip that they provide in the wet drops off rapidly. Less grip means longer stopping distances, and it’s fairly obvious what longer stopping distances mean. It’s simple to check your own tyres. All you need is a 20p coin. Slot the coin into the main grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when inserted, your tread is above the legal limit. If you can see any of the outer band, your tyres may be illegal.

If you drive around with under-inflated tyres for a long time, it will weaken the sidewalls, the car won’t handle as it should and the shoulders of the tyres will wear out rapidly. You’ll also use more fuel. On the other hand, if you over-inflate your tyres your car will be a lot stiffer, it will have less-grip and the middle of your tyres will wear out faster. Plus, if you do hit one of the many local pot-holes, it’s more likely that the tyre will become damaged.

It’s good practice to check your pressures at least twice a month and do it before you drive the car so that they are cold (pressure increases when they get warm). When doing the test, try three different locations on each tyre Again, if you are in any doubt, your local garage and also try to get into the habit of doing it at least once a month. should do this for you free of charge. As well as being unsafe, an illegal tyre could also cost you By Ben Morley a £2500 fine and even points on your licence. Of course, if you are unsure, pop into a garage you can trust and ask them to check for you. Many will do this free of charge. It’s good practice to give your tyres a visual check regularly, too. Our fantastic road networks are prone to the occasional pot-hole. These, along with bumping up, or rubbing along, kerbs can take their toll on your tyres. 20 - Motoring

Let’s create a Pay it Forward ripple

Paying it Forward in life can create a ripple much further than you realise. April 30th 2015 is ‘Pay it Forward Day’, a day that encourages us to highlight actions that are already happening on a daily basis around the world.

I have the privilege of helping to promote this ripple effect around the world. I help run one of the groups in the UK www.payitforwardUK.net that encourages others to share their experiences of kindness and demonstrates how its reach can spread globally. To put a ‘pay it forward’ into a visual image, how about using a social media demonstration? One person posts a positive picture or quote, their friends and then their friends share this. Before you know it, many people have been positively influenced by the post. They then go on to help others as they become more positive and the ripple expands. 30 - Health

By helping that person in the street, or by allowing that car out in front of you, you feel much better about yourself. They will appreciate the gesture and they may well act more positively throughout the day themselves. That act of kindness ripples forward in the world. We’ve got seven billion people to reach so it needs to be a big ripple.

What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes.

A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been For me ‘Pay it Forward’ is a way staring straight at the screen. of being. Where there’s a Will... “When we first took over the business called Good Wills from a close friend we looked at how the company was being promoted locally and found that using the Uncovered magazines had been the most effective. Therefore we decided to increase the advert size and in turn received many more enquiries. We have now been running the business for over four years and almost all of our business comes from the Uncovered magazines and then referrals from the customers that these magazines initially produce. We found that people did not go out and pick up the Uncovered magazine specifically looking for a Will Writer, but they would read it every month due to the high standard of Wills Writ ten editorial content and local community articles that appear every month... that’s how they see our advert.”

Children and young people spend a lot of time online – it can be a great way for them to socialise, explore and have fun. But children can also face risks such as cyberbullying or seeing content that's inappropriate. That's why it's important for them to know how to stay safe online. Here are a few tips that might help: 1. Guide your family in the digital world in the same way you do in day-to-day life – including not being afraid to set boundaries and rules for your children from a young age. Some good questions to get started with might be:

3. Discuss with your friends, family and other parents about how they help their children to progress and keep safe in their digital world. You might be able to exchange some interesting tips and even help them out too.

4. Use a filtering/monitoring service like OpenDNS on your router to filter internet activity right at the source of your home broadband. This way, any device that connects through your home internet is included in the filtering without the need for any additional software or advanced knowledge. Open DNS is free and can be set to monitor activity as well as blocking websites based on the level of protection you want. If you are not technically 2. Clean and Fresh

Grow Your Own Veg As the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done.

Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot.

see below

Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:

Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect If you’re an organic gardener or you simply for direct sowing. want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time Limnanthes douglasii thinking about what to grow and how you (the poached egg plant): can best nurture it so that pests, diseases This yellow and white flowered and other problems take a back seat. hardy annual is loved by hoverflies. Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant. You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Beneficial Insects include

The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you find tastiest. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2015?

Beneficial Insects Include Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids. Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths. Hoverflies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime. Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs. Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. 44 - Gardens
