RUN, Reigate!

I

f you missed out on last year’s Run Reigate half marathon – which recently beat the likes of the Great North Run, to win silver in the Best Half Marathon category at the 2015 Running Awards – there’s still time to get involved in both the half marathon AND NEW 10K route, taking place on 20th September, from 9:15am, at Priory Park. We chatted to Reigate resident and founder of Run Reigate; Dave Kelly to UNcover why he started the community event, his top running tips and how becoming a fanatical runner changed his life! How did Run Reigate start? I was a late starter to running and it has changed my life in so many positive ways, helping me lose weight, stop smoking and to become a fitter, healthier and happier person. I thought Reigate had all the right ingredients for a fantastic race of its own, a race that could become one of the best in the country. I really wanted our local community to have a great excuse to go out there and get fit, active and healthy, especially for an event they can proudly call their own. How did it feel to have so many readers take part in your first ever event, last year? When you have dreamed about something for so long, seeing it actually happen that day last year was extraordinary.

6

/RHUncovered

Watching almost 4,000 people cross the start line to Run Reigate was just the most amazing yet surreal moment - right up there in the proudest days of my life! What do you enjoy most about running? I love the freedom of being outdoors, especially around Reigate as it is so pretty. It gives me time to think, and I love the weary but great feeling that comes after a long run. However I also really enjoy good food and drink, so it helps me balance life a bit too! And finally, do you have any top training tips for local runners? There are endless training tips and plans around, but my mantra is to just run as you feel. It’s a cliché but they say you must listen to your body, so do a long run if you feel like it, or take a break and rest for a few days if you don’t. Running is very personal, and it’s both physical and mental energy working in harmony, so try to do enough to keep healthy and fit, but don’t overdo it! Come on Reigate, it’s our town, our race, our pride….we can easily be the best in the country! Please get involved on 20th September by running, volunteering, supporting the runners, coming down to Priory Park on race day or just getting behind it and telling everyone you know about it! Sign up and find out more by visiting: www. runreigate.com.

Pre-School Jingle Bugs a Surrey Success Story!

I

n 2012, local mum of two, and singer/songwriter Nina Bromham (who has worked with Girls Aloud, Boyzone and Dannii Minogue) created Jingle Bugs; a unique musical experience for children aged 0-4, in conjuction with Surrey Arts (Surrey County Council’s music and arts service).

The classes, which run at the Colman Redland Centre on Croydon Road in Reigate on Monday and Wednesday mornings and most recently, at the Old Pixham School in Dorking on Tuesday mornings, involve singing, playing musical instruments, sensory props and stories – a formula Nina has found benefits many development skills:

Over just three years, the not-for-profit classes have become a booming success, with more than fifty local mums, dads, grandparents and carers regularly enjoying the Reigate sessions – and in the last few months, have expanded to other areas in the county.

“Our motto is ‘fun with music’ and we try and make everything we do full of fun and enjoyment to engage everyone through music,” the enthusiastic Reigate mum continues. “As well as lots of traditional rhymes, I also use classical and pop music to illustrate themes. It’s amazing the range of developmental benefits music provides, including numeracy, literacy, mobility and social skills.” Laura Saunders, Surrey Arts’ Learning and Teaching Manager adds: “Offering sound, movement, colour and shape to newborn babies and their parents; and instrumental and vocal music, movement, story and drama to pre-schoolers, means that Jingle Bugs offers the full musical experience for young children, giving them a firm grounding in musical experiences prior to starting school.”

“I’ve been a professional singer since I was twenty years old, gigging all over the world, but when I had children, I realised that the long distance work would have to stop and I wanted to do something that would work around them,” Nina explains.

With the recent addition of the Dorking class, we’re sure it won’t be long until more local classes are created! Find out more by visiting: www.jinglebugsmusic.co.uk.

“I had taken my two to a wonderful local class called Music Tots which was run by a lovely, guitar playing lady called Jenny, who was retiring. I spoke to Jenny and she said that it would be great if someone else were to take over.” “Surrey Arts, the arts branch of Surrey Council, run the classes and after a frantic fortnight of turning an idea into something more concrete- and brushing up on my guitar playing- I gave them a little demonstration of what I hoped to do, they liked it, and that’s how Jingle Bugs was born!”

Saddle up for Second Donkey Derby

A

s last year’s Horley Lions Donkey Derby was such a success – the organisation which serves Horley, Reigate, Redhill and surrounding villages, is planning their second fun donkey racing event, to take place on Sunday 13th September – along with their anticipated charity Dog Show! The second event of its kind, hopes to raise up to £4,000 for Surrey Young Carers, which supports young local carers who are looking after a loved one – an inspirational charity, which has understandably, touched the hearts of our Lions members: “Until recently we did not know that there were so many young people out there supporting their parents or siblings,” Lion Peter Moxley told us. “These youngsters really are the unsung heroes as because of their family circumstances they have a very restricted social life and not only that, because of the strain on their time, their studies can be affected. These youngsters deserve a break and hopefully we will raise a few pennies for their cause.” Money will be raised through stalls, BBQs and of course – those all-important donkey races!

“There will be eight races, if you can call them that, as most donkeys prefer to walk but you never know!” Peter laughs. “There will be a tote for the spectators to have a flutter but the stakes are limited as we really want this to be a fun event and it is not geared towards the ardent gambler, as you never know what a donkey will do!” The Donkey Derby, taking place on the Brighton Road, Recreation Ground, Horley, from 11:30am, will also feature the family favourite fundraising dog show (with judging taking place from 12:30pm), where proceeds will be donated to Canine Partners. View the day’s full schedule and download your pooch’s dog show entry form by visiting: www.horleylions.org.uk.

Magna Carta: Law and Legacy

8

00 years ago, in Runnymede, Surrey, the Magna Carta (derived from Latin as the Great Charter) was sealed by King John limiting the power of authoritarian rule, paving the way for trial by jury and defining limits on taxation; all still very relevant enforcements today. To commemorate and highlight the importance of the Magna Carta, Surrey Heritage have designed a pop-up exhibition that is currently running at Reigate Library and will be visiting Horley Library, over the next month. “The history and detail of the story of Magna Carta is complicated and can be confusing for a modern audience so we tried to make it as visual and engaging as possible,” Barrie Higham, Heritage Manager for Surrey History Centre said. “Hopefully it will show why the events that took place 800 years ago in a quiet water meadow in Runnymede were so important in the history of the world and still relevant to us today.“

10

/RHUncovered

“You only need to look at the current debates about Freedom of Information, Human Rights, phone hacking scandals etc. to see how the basic principles of Magna Carta are still the subject of debate.” See the pop-up display at Reigate Library until 29th August and at Horley Library between 28th September and 10th October.

Looking for something to do?

T

hen why not volunteer? Whether you’re looking to socialise, now the kids are heading back to school or you’re hoping to improve your skill set or perhaps you just want to give something back to the community – whatever your reason; there’s never been a better time to tick volunteering off that bucket list… Each month 15.2 million people in the UK volunteer, while 23.1 million spare their time to benefit their communities, once a year, according to a recent Community Life Survey. Just one local organisation that helps volunteers find such placements is Reigate and Banstead Volunteer Centre – through chatting with someone interested in volunteering their time, knowledge and experience, the team can place a potential volunteer in a role where they can thrive and also benefit the lives of others. “If you’re thinking of volunteering but don’t know where to start, have a chat with one of the staff at the Reigate and Banstead Volunteer Centre,” Lisa Irwin, the Volunteer Centre Manager, says. “We have hundreds of volunteer opportunities, so there is bound to be something that could interest you.” “If you have thought about volunteering but perhaps are put off because you can’t make a regular commitment, there are many opportunities to get involved with one-off events. These could include helping out at an annual summer or Christmas fairs or a specific fundraising event!” As local volunteer, Mia, aged nineteen told us, volunteering has helped to build her confidence, as well as give her an active part in the community:

12

/RHUncovered

“I’ve volunteered since I was in secondary school with the Rotaract Club (a club that brings together adults aged 18- 30 to take action in their communities) as their secretary, taking notes at meetings and helping to arrange events,” the Surrey resident explains. “I have also volunteered at one-off events helping on stalls and serving teas/coffees, as well as doing some admin work for a local charity in Redhill. Volunteering has helped me gain confidence, I’ve learnt new skills and it looks great on your CV! I have just finished my first year at university where I am studying History and Sociology, and carried out more voluntary experience this summer to help with my studies. I think I will always want to volunteer as it also gives you a sense that you are doing something good and helping those that are maybe less fortunate than you are!” To find your perfect placement contact the Reigate and Banstead Volunteer Centre on 01737 762115 or visit them at Suite 3a, Victoria House, Brighton Road, Redhill, Surrey. An Exciting Autumn for Local Marching Band

T

If you’ve been to fetes, village fayres and other community events over the summer, chances are you will have been fortunate to see Redhill’s Corps of Drums performing. The marching band, who have been meeting and actively involved in local events since 1981, have had a busy summer, taking part in carnivals and fun days across Surrey and as far afield as Kent. However their forty members, are currently practising for next month’s annual show night, bonfire night and Remembrance Day events, “Our annual show night is the biggest event in our as well as playing at the prestigious Birmingham International Tattoo event at the end of November. calendar, as this is the end of year presentation night for us, showing off all aspects of the band, to families, friends and supporters. This is a FREE event and everyone is welcome to come along!” While the band has a rather active autumn planned, new members are invited to join in with band practises on Wednesdays from 6:40pm to 7:30pm and Sundays from 10:30am to 12:30pm at the Redhill Youth Association Hall, Marketfield Way, Redhill – where tuition and free instruments are given, as part of membership subscriptions.

“The band’s main marching events involve local village fetes, parades or other holiday celebrations,” Corporal Rowen Martin, who joined the band, fourteen years ago, when he was just eight years old, told us. “As well as marching performances, the band often holds sit down concerts during the year and at Christmas.”

“If you currently play an instrument or would like to give it a go then you have nothing to lose by coming along and giving it a go,” the Corps of Drums player continues. “The band is friendly and fun, playing music you’ll know and love to perform!” Further details on the Redhill Corps of Drums can be found online at www.rcd.org.uk.

“Due to the band’s continued support of The Youth Marching Band Association, we were invited to perform at the Birmingham International Tattoo with other TYMBA bands as part of the National Youth Marching Band.” Before the two day trip to Birmingham, the band will be hosting their annual show night at St Joseph’s Church Hall in Redhill on Saturday 10th October, which as Corporal Martin explains, is the highlight in the band’s packed calendar of events!

Prevention is better than the cure I

n the motor trade you hear a lot of different expressions, many of which are far too vulgar to repeat in print. However, there are the odd few that are quite poignant and even, dare I say it, useful. One that isn’t used enough these days though is “prevention is better than the cure”.

If we take a misty-eyed look back in time to the middle to late part of the 20th century, owning a car was still something of a luxury. It wasn’t something that everyone could afford and, in the grand scheme of things, still quite a new and novel thing. Many say it was a simpler time too. There were no computers, there were only three channels on the black and white TV, hair was longer and clothes were stranger. Things were made differently too. Rather than meticulous robotics putting things together in an airtight chamber, it might have once been done by a bloke called Dave wearing a flat-cap, with a half-smoked ‘roly’ hanging out of his mouth. He’d have no doubt used a hammer, and at least three different swear words as part of the process too. As such, if you wanted things to last, they needed looking after a bit more. Take the motor car, for example, if you wanted it to stay reliable, you’d need to be getting it serviced at least twice a year. As time has marched on, cars might have got more expensive, but manufacturers make many hundreds of thousands more of them, the process by which they are built is a lot better and the materials used, (in most instances), are a lot higher quality. The net result of this is vehicle manufacturers extending their ‘recommended service intervals’ further and further apart. It’s all well and good that engine oils are a lot better quality and that an interval of over 15,000 miles between changes is okay, but a lot can happen to a car in that time. If it wasn’t for the annual MOT test (which is only really a basic inspection of the car and by no means a full certificate of health) there would be some very dangerous cars on the road. Not only that, it’s not unusual to find yourself hit with a larger than expected bill, as it’s been 18,000 miles since someone last looked at the car and things have worn out under there. Our roads aren’t exactly billiard table smooth, are they!?

30

/RHUncovered

We are seeing a lot more people driving their cars until they break, these days, which is a real shame. This is partly due to those ever-expanding service schedules and partly due to the fact that owning a car today isn’t the privilege that it once was. It’s almost a consumable in today’s modern society. There are over double the amount of cars on the roads in the UK now, compared to when my grandfather set up Morley Auto Services in 1966 and most of them seem to be on the M25 when I want to use it. Going back to my original point of prevention being better than the cure, here is a prime example: Vehicles fitted with a timing belt require this to be changed at regular intervals. It’s what you might call a service item, it does wear out. In some cases it’s a time consuming, and therefore costly, job. Let us say that all-in it costs £300 to do the job on Mr Smith’s car. Mr Smith is unsure whether he wants the job doing as it seems like a lot of money to spend when there are no obvious faults with the car, so Mr Smith leaves it. Two weeks later, Mr Smith’s timing belt snaps and the engine’s valves and pistons (previously kept apart by this belt) now become very intimate. What would have been a £300 job is now a £1500 engine re-build. Obviously this is a worst-case scenario, but it’s a perfect example of when prevention is better than the cure. The same can be said of a set of brake pads, something that would be checked when the wheels come off as part of a routine service. A £70 brake pad change suddenly becomes a £200 set of discs and pads when the pads are left to wear out to the extent that they damage the disc. It boils down to the fact that just like the human body, if you look after it, you won’t be at the doctors every two weeks. If you act on early warning signs, there will hopefully be no nasty surprises later down the line. So do yourself, your car, and your bank balance a favour, and get it looked at properly at least once a year.

Mediterranean fish bake

This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices.

Serves 4, Ready in 50 minutes

2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) 350g small new potatoes, halved 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 225g small plum tomatoes, halved 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) 50g butter, softened Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. 2. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. 3. Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. 4. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges. Tip: Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

Managing the Menopause A

re you suddenly finding yourself feeling hotter than the Gobi Desert? You know the feeling, as you settle down for a night’s sleep you want to throw the duvet out the window? I’m talking about the signs that the menopause may be starting.

What can Doctors help you with during these changes within your body? The most important thing to say is, don’t put off going and speaking to your GP. They can help guide you. They have many links to other organisations who can help with this transition your body is going through.

What are possible signs and symptoms that it may has started?

Doctors have a wide array of medications available including HRT, which research has shown can help to restore the level of the hormone, oestrogen. Many other medications are available, which may help with the hot flushes, nausea or other changes in mood.

• Hot flushes or night sweats • Feeling your heart racing • Difficulty in sleeping, either going to or staying asleep • Reduced libido • Mood changes, such as feeling tired, irritable, depressed or anxious • Concentration loss or poor memory

Are there any natural alternatives available? Exercise has been shown not only to help with some of the symptoms but also by exercising you help protect your body from heart disease and osteoporosis. Always seek advice from a fitness or medical professional before commencing any exercise. Relaxation techniques or selfhypnosis may also help. Learning how to manage the anxious thoughts around these changes can give you back a feeling of being in control. Acupuncture, Aromatherapy and other alternative remedies are widely available too. It’s always important to get yourself checked out by a GP if concerned, and then find a course of treatments or combination of things that work for you. Our bodies are all different, so if one doesn’t work, try an alternative. Don’t give up. I know there are some extremely knowledgeable professionals in this area who are on hand to help and give advice.

There are many ways to help you through this time of changes, always speak to someone. It’s important to know you are not alone. Becky Wells, www.beckywells.com Personal Development Hypnotherapist www.payitforwarduk.net

What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. What can hypnotherapy help with? • Agoraphobia • Anxiety • Blushing • Confidence Building • Depression • Fears and Phobias • Gambling • Guilt • Habits and Compulsions • IBS • Insecurity • Insomnia • Memory Recall • Nail biting • Nervousness • Pain Control • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Panic Attacks • Public Speaking • Smoking • Stress Management • Timidity • Trauma • Weight Problems • Worry

9 ways to create a new room in your house Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home.

1. Add a conservatory Pros: Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons: A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. Regulations: Many conservatories are exempt from planning permission and building regulations, but check with your local planning department first.

2. Build an extension

3. Convert the loft

Pros: Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the first floor, too.

Pros: Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden.

Cons: Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. Regulations:Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.

Cons: Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t traditionally built. Regulations: Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information.

4. Convert the cellar Pros: Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home.

Regulations: If you just want to turn an existing cellar into a normal room, it’s classed as a change of use and doesn’t need planning permission. But if you lower the floor or extend, you’re likely to need permission, so check with your local authority. And Cons: Often more expensive, per square metre, than you’ll need party wall consent from any adjoining other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to neighbours. In both cases you must comply with Building Regulations.gov.uk for more information. get enough headroom and light into the new room.

01342 718348

5. Build a room in the garden Pros: The building work will hardly bother you.

Cons: Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. Regulations : A simple garden room may be exempt from planning permission and Building Regulations, but if it’s laid on permanent foundations and connected to mains power, water and sewerage, you’ll need both.

6. Put in an ensuite

7. Build on top of your garage

Cons: Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value.

Cons: Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned.

Regulations: Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is.

Regulations: You’ll need planning permission and Building Regulations.

Pros: Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space.

Pros: A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy.

8. Convert your understairs space 9. Convert your garage Pros: Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons: You’ll have to find extra space to store that under-stairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. Regulations: Building Regulations approval is necessary if you’re installing a bathroom.

@rhuncovered

Pros: It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons: Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Regulations: Planning permission is not usually required, but Building Regulations approval is.

Unwelcome Visitors

Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.

Off with their Heads Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to procreate. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those hidden stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots into little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process. Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run.

Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems.
