Welcome to our November issue. We had a busy month in October, culminating with the National Magazine Publishers Conference at which magazine publishers from around the country (and actually as from far away as Australia) congregate each year, each hoping that their magazine will beat the competition and win one of the coveted awards up for grabs. We were therefore thrilled that our RH Uncovered and TN Uncovered magazines did just that and are now award winning magazines! Back in the office and down to earth, our fabulous front cover photo this month is from the East Grinstead in Bloom 2015 calendar of Standen Rocks and was taken by local photographer, Geoff Whitaker (geoffwhitakerphotography@outlook.com) from East Grinstead. To find out more about the calendar and how to get your copy visit www.eastgrinsteadinbloom.org.uk. We have more of everything you love about the magazine this month, great articles in Homes, Gardens and Health, What’s On’s for your diary, including where you can attend services of Remembrance and of course local businesses that are ready and waiting to serve you. We hope you have a great month and we’ll see you in December! The Team at RH Uncovered

Community News November’s here and presents the perfect chance to wrap up warm and head outside for some community bonfire events. Another reason to head outdoors this month is for our Remembrance services, organised by Royal British Legion members. There are many commemorative events taking place on Sunday 9th November, as well as places to pick up your poppy, so don’t forget to search these out and show your respect for those who have fallen or been injured during service. Of course, the community section is also packed with great news stories and events from our local groups, including the First Forest Row Scouts and Ashurst Wood Village Festival. So pull up a pew, make yourself a nice hot chocolate and enjoy November’s community section!

These Fairs have rapidly acquired a reputation as being one of the outstanding venues between London and the South Coast.

It’s an ideal event for choosing some very special Christmas presents too and of course handmade cards. Later in the month also at Chequer Mead is another of the Mid Week Collectors Fairs. November 19th sees the next one when 8 - Community

Be Fire Safe This Bonfire Season! West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to take extra care this firework season by attending an organised bonfire and firework display rather than holding an event at home. “The firework season is traditionally a busy time of year for the fire service, so we’re calling for people to help prevent emergencies by attending, wherever possible, a properly organised community bonfire and firework event,” Jackie Boyle, Community Fire Safety Officer for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service says. “The fireworks set off will be more spectacular than those people use on their garden and they are much safer.” “If anyone can’t attend an organised event and is planning a firework party at home, then please follow some basic precautions to make sure you and your family stay safe.”

Firework Safety: • • • • • • • • • • •

Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114. Keep fireworks in a closed box. Follow the instructions on each firework. Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper. Stand well back. Never go back to a lit firework - even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode. Never throw fireworks or put them in your pocket. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. Don’t give sparklers to children under five. Keep pets safely indoors. Stay in full control if you’re lighting fireworks avoiding alcohol is the safest option!

Bonfire safety: • Let your neighbours know you are planning to have a bonfire or they may end up dialling 999! • Avoid having a bonfire in windy conditions - it increases the likelihood of the fire spreading out of control. • Build your bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees. • Don’t burn aerosols, tyres, canisters or anything containing foam or paint, they can produce toxic fumes or explode. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going - it can get out of control quickly. • Don’t leave your bonfire unattended. When you have finished - make sure it is fully extinguished.

Fire safety advice is free and easy to access via www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire or from the Community Fire Safety Team on 01243 752404 10 - Community

Community News A “Bloomin” Lovely Calendar for 2015

Forest Row Scouts step into Fundraising

If you’re looking for a Christmas gift that will keep giving throughout the year, how about East Grinstead In Bloom’s community calendar?

The First Forest Row Scout group are currently on a fundraising challenge to upgrade their 40 year old hut, install facilities help the less able gain full access, thereby making it available for use to the wider community.

Showing the best of our ‘bloomin’ beautiful town, from the new McIndoe memorial to Sackvile College, to the High Street and the war memorial, the calendar is now available to buy from local shops and the East Grinstead in Bloom website: www.eastgrinsteadinbloom.org.uk. Better still, all proceeds from the calendar go directly to projects supported by the community organisation. “Such projects include supporting the gardening clubs at Imberhorne Lower School, planting at the McIndoe Memorial, The Compass Garden, wildlife boxes at Hurst Farm Pond and planting at East Grinstead Train Station,” Samantha Baldery from East Grinstead in Bloom explains. “Next year we have a variety of new projects on the horizon which the money raised from the calendar will go towards funding.” “East Grinstead in Bloom is a wonderful community group who want to make East Grinstead blooming lovely for its residents and visitors. We are always thinking of ways to improve the town and would love people to share any ideas they have and help us deliver these where they can. Every pairs of hands makes a difference, even if it’s only for half an hour!” green-fingered Samantha continues. To find out more or volunteer your time for two neighbourhood projects, including The Compass Garden and Hurst Farm Pond, contact Samantha at: commiteesecretary@eastgrinsteadinbloom.org.uk

Ashurst Wood Christmas Market Christmas will come early to Ashurst Wood with the arrival of the anticipated community Christmas market on Friday 28th November. This year’s festive market, held between 3-6pm at the Village Centre, will boast numerous stalls for great gift ideas, Santa’s grotto and the lighting of the Christmas tree. Local groups, including the pre-school and youth club will also be in attendance, making it a community event not to be missed. “The much loved Christmas Market is now in it’s 6th year and provides an excellent opportunity to get those special Christmas gifts for family and friends” Rebecca Roberts from Ashurst Wood Parish Council says. “It’s the perfect way to get into the festive spirit!”

“We are trying to raise £8,000.00 - £10,000.00,” Hazel Best, head of fundraising for the First Forest Row Scouts says. “This is to repair and refurbish plus install new windows, fire exit doors, disabled access, new toilets and disabled toilets, along with some plasterwork and decorating. Ideally we would like the work to be completed within 12 months but it all depends on the success of our fundraising.” “We have 73 members in our group, of which, nine attend the Step by Step School in East Grinstead. The children in the First Forest Row Scout Group would be proud to know their community is actively involved,” Hazel continues. “Local businesses can be involved through donating financially, but we also welcome help in kind - it could be gifting equipment or labour, expert advice to help obtain quotes would also really help.” “Please help our fundraising challenge, you will not only be helping our young people continue to enjoy their Scouting adventures in a comfortable, light and safe place; but for the first time making it possible for our less able members to fully take part in the scouting experience by enabling to use the scout hut which is currently not equipped for their needs.” To donate or find out more contact forestrowscouts@yahoo.co.uk

Lest We Forget by Simon Morris, Chairman of Forest Row Royal British Legion Although the work of the Royal British Legion continues through the year supporting our armed services, late October and early November is probably our busiest time with the ‘Poppy Appeal’ starting around the 25th October. This year in Forest Row, as last year we have decided not to do a house to house collection. Instead, as always poppies, crosses etc. will be available in all the shops and other outlets and there will be two street collections on Saturday 1st and 8th November. As part of the ‘Poppy Appeal’ there will be a lunchtime Recital in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 1st November at 2.00pm. Soloists will include Claire Watkins and Gareth Dafydd Morris and I know those who have attended in the past, will know you are in for a very enjoyable occasion. The late lunchtime slot has been extremely popular in recent years, so we are hoping for a good audience again.

Remembrance Sunday falls on the 9th November. Our service as always takes place at Holy Trinity Church. We begin with the wreath laying at the War Memorial starting at 10.30am, followed by the service in Church. We encourage everyone to attend, especially as we remember all those who have died in conflict over the last century and particularly in recent times.

East Grinstead Remembers

The East Grinstead Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held at the War Memorial in East Grinstead’s Historic High Street on Sunday 9th of November. Hundreds of people attend each year and last November the event was covered by the BBC’s local TV News. Crowds gather at 10.30am and the ceremony involves many groups and of course veterans, and is organised by the British Legion in association with the Town Council and many other local organisations.

On Saturday 8th November, ‘Poppy Day’ the R.B.L. have their annual Lingfield Pays Respects In Lingfield a service will be held at the war memorial between coffee morning in the Peter Griffits Hall from 10-12noon. This will include a cake and produce stall. Do pop in for a chat and support the 10.45am – 11.30am, in which a two minutes silence will be held at 11am. The High Street will also be closed to traffic. appeal in the process. 14 - Community

Conveniently located at Dormansland Surrey, Dave’s Wild Living lets you learn how to build a shelter, start a fire and find water to trapping and cooking your own food.

We now cater for school parties.

Scouts/Brownies/TA Cadets/Private parties/Team Building/ Families all welcome and discounts given for large groups. Fire lighting tools and kits also available for sale.

To find out more contact us today or visit our website: www.Daveswildliving.co.uk T: 07742300887 E: Daveswildliving@gmail.com

The service has received huge demand with a number of owners in the area using Wagging Tails for their dog’s holiday and the business already taking advanced bookings for 2015. Ken and Marion, dog owners from Lingfield who have used the service commented, “We are so pleased we went to Wagging Tails to help us find a carer for Poppy. Alexandra and family looked after Poppy really well and they made her feel at home and took her on lovely walks. From now on we will not be using Kennels, we much prefer home boarding.” Sue attributes the success of the business to the focus she places on the welfare and individual needs of each dog. “Owners are often, and quite rightly, very worried about leaving their dogs when they go away and many don’t like the idea of kennels. Our aim is to make this as stress free as possible by finding out as much information as we can about each dog we look after so that we are able to give each guest the very best and most appropriate holiday home. Owners get to go and meet their dog’s carer prior to the board and go away knowing that he will be the only guest in the house giving them the peace of mind to relax and enjoy their own holiday.” If you would like to find out more about Wagging Tails dog boarding service or are interested in joining their team of dog carers please call Sue on 01306 880389 or visit www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/rh

We’re here to help Interior design is a tricky business. Fashions come and go and taste is in the eye of the beholder. In a world where choice is infinite, we can help you create a beautiful home that expresses your personality. We will manoeuvre through the bewildering choice of colours, textures and designs for you so that you can enjoy what you have without the effort. We work to your budget. We can create a scheme on a shoestring or we can go all-in, money no option. Your home, your choice. Our service is bespoke, but here are a few options to give you a small taste of what we can do. We never hide our prices.

Do you need to sell your home? We will: Advise on small-scale ideas to effectively improve the look and style of your home. Our portfolio will include a full description of materials and suggested work, together with costings and timeframes. Help to find trusted local tradespeople. 26 - ODD Advertorial

Work within your budget – spending too much wastes your money. Your buyers will change things anyway but they may need a blank canvas to begin with. Help you utilise your existing space and safely pack away those things that you don’t need. After all, they will need to be packed when you sell your house. Be totally honest. We will tell you what your estate agent/ friends/family won’t. For the initial consultation and a thorough portfolio with any proposed changes, together with a list of trusted tradespeople, samples and stockists etc. - £249

Provide scaled drawings of each elevation so that you have a clear idea of what we propose. We can then work together to finalise and refine the overall look. Source materials and take delivery ready for when the work needs to be done. We can manage the whole process for you or you can choose to do this yourself. Arrange and project-manage decoration and installation. Find solutions that will add value to your home and represent your style. Work within your budget.

For additional work including: packing, sourcing and obtaining materials, project management etc. - £95 per day

For the initial consultation and portfolio, including elevation drawings, samples and costings etc. - £399

Do you want to make some changes?

Sourcing and taking delivery of materials - £85 per day

Do you want to change an area of your home but don’t know where to start?

We will: Provide a full portfolio of the new design, together with samples and estimated cost. Your portfolio will include colour schemes and suggestions for furniture and lighting.

Full project management, portfolio as above, sourcing materials, overseeing installation and decoration - £899. The above costs are based on one or two rooms. We are more than happy to accommodate those who wish to complete a full renovation and we will negotiate an appropriate price with you once the scale of the project is known.

There are also some things we won’t do! We won’t:

We can:

Inflate the price of materials – you pay the cost price and delivery, nothing more.

Provide a short portfolio that details ideas for you to complete yourself, including instruction where necessary - £129

Revamp it up Tatty tables, boring bookcases and lacklustre lamps? Improving your furnishings isn’t expensive or difficult if you take the make-do-and-mend approach, says Katherine Sorrell

Sofas and armchairs Wooden furniture Worn or grubby upholstery is easy to disguise in an instant with a blanket, shawl, throw or other large piece of fabric. Unfortunately, the moment you sit down the fabric will start to come untucked so, for a more permanent solution, a new cover is the best option. For those who are handy with a sewing machine, making a simple loose cover will not be too demanding but, even if you have to go to a professional, a new slipcover can transform the proportions and character of your furniture, and is worthwhile if you have a good-quality piece to which you want to add another few years of life. Either way, save money by using cheap canvas on areas you can’t see, or consider a boho-chic patchwork effect combining several different (but co-ordinating) fabrics. For that finishing touch, add cushions made from leftover lengths of fabric, silk scarves, vintage linens or even attractive tea towels.

Lamps

Wooden lamp bases of all shapes, sizes and styles are perfect candidates for a revamp – just sand down and then choose your paint. White or off-white eggshell is cool and simple but, for a more eye-catching effect, try vibrant colours or interesting finishes such metallic, pearlescent or glitter. Fabric shades are easy to re-cover with a small length of new (or vintage) fabric and some spray glue. Ruffled fabric added to the bottom edge of a plain shade gives a pretty, country-style look, or embellish with ribbons, braid, buttons, bows or frills. 28 - Homes

More or less any old wooden furniture (though not, obviously, valuable antiques) can be rescued quite easily. Take your time, however – it’s all in the preparation. First, carry out any necessary repairs. Then remove drawers, handles and knobs. Rub the piece down thoroughly with medium-grade sandpaper, and wipe with a damp cloth. Bare wood needs a coat of primer; otherwise, it’s undercoat then a top coat of eggshell or gloss. Bear in mind, too, that a simple change of knob or handle often makes a dramatic difference, giving a sophisticated feel to a cheap, modern piece, or transforming something frumpy and old-fashioned into a modern delight. Further changes, for those feeling confident enough, could include adding or removing mouldings, replacing solid doors with glazing, or fitting hanging rails or hooks.

Headboards

A gorgeous new headboard will brighten up the most boring of bedrooms. For divan beds, pad an appropriately sized rectangle of MDF with a sheet of foam or wadding, sew a slip cover, then attach to the wall or the bed frame. Use a soft, tactile fabric (such as velvet or moleskin), that co-ordinates with everything else in the room, from bed linen to walls and window treatments. For an impromptu headboard, use a folding screen or a length of hemmed fabric hung from a baton above the bed. If your bed has an integral headboard, try placing a quilt or padded throw over it, or sew a rectangle of quilted fabric and tie it onto the framework.

Curtains & blinds

Nothing dates a room more than old-fashioned curtains so, if you like their fabric but not their style, check out whether it’s possible to replace either the header tape – change deep gathers or goblets for more up-to-date, simple gathers or pencil pleats – or the hanging method itself: from hooks and rings to ties, tabs, clips or eyelets. Alternatively, you could add a twist to plain curtains by stitching a complementary border along the leading edge or across the bottom, or adding a trimming such as ribbon, ric rac or a row of buttons. If your curtain pole is out of date, try painting it, replacing the finials or substituting the whole thing with a more modern example. Blinds can be instantly improved either by adding an interesting trim along the bottom or – a tiny but important detail – swapping a cheap plastic pull for a good-looking one made from leather, glass, raffia, stone or rope. If you need to re-start from scratch, remember that inexpensive fabric makes sumptuous-looking curtains if used generously, and lined so that they hang properly. To advertise call - 01293 824088

Leaves Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them into gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer.

Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and increase the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. Vines BMW Venison Casserole Serves 6, Ready in 2 ½ hours, plus marinating

Ingredients

Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. 1.3 kg diced venison, 425ml red wine, 1 tsp juniper berries, 2 fresh bay leaves, 2 tbsp olive oil, 25g butter, 350g shallots or button onions, peeled, 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed, 2 tbsp seasoned flour,

60 - Food and Drink

300ml hot beef or vegetable stock, 2 large parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks 3tbsp redcurrant jelly Few sprigs fresh thyme Salt & freshly ground black pepper Creamy mashed potato, to serve

1, Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. 2, Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF /Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3, Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. 4, Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. 5, Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.
