Welcome to our February issue Love is all around us… Happy February! All months seem to have a theme, don’t they? October is Halloween, November is Fireworks Night, December is Christmas, January is the New Year. When it comes to February it’s the theme that people either love or hate. Valentine’s Day, where couples throughout the country show their love for their other half in many romantic gestures, each year overtakes on social media with people showing how much they’re loved. But we can flip it around, too. Learning to love yourself is just as important, and sometimes harder, than learning to love other people. And once you’ve got that sorted, well - you’re pretty invincible I think. There are so many local groups making a huge impact in the community, that it’s our mission to tell you all about them! We’re looking for people to get in touch about their plans for 2015, so if that’s you or you know of a group in 2015 in need of some exposure - let us know! Have a great month,

Simon Steams through February Hello February! Yes, you are the shortest month in the year – and perhaps it’s just as well as not too many people have a good word to say about you! On the other hand (providing icy tempests and record snow falls keep away) at least romance is in the air with Valentine’s Day on the 14th prompting a surge in the local card shops and florists.

But if you are looking for something a bit more original in the romance department, then do take a look at the Bluebell Railway’s February offers as their Valentine’s Day specials run on the 14th and 15th as well as a very special outing on their Golden Arrow service which should really impress anyone lucky enough to get that as a treat. It’s also half-term and many parents and grandparents will be looking round to see what’s open to take the kids to.

Simon Kerr, Town Promotions Manager Once again the Bluebell Railway has come to our rescue with their special ‘Kids for a Quid’ offer, which not only gives us something to do – but also helps keep the costs down!

Last month, we ran an article on Forest Row’s electric vehicle charging point. Since going to print, the local team behind the free-to-use car charging scheme, Wired Thing, have put together a petition to get the point sign posted, to ensure that electric vehicle users can find it! “After lots of investigation, we are told by the DfT that the government have no plans whatsoever to allow EV charge point directional signage, either on existing road signs or anywhere on the public highway,” Amy Parcell from Wired Thing explains. “This is clearly an issue for users as unless they log on to specific sites on the internet, they will have no idea where these charge points are. We have created a petition which requires 100,000 signatures before March 2015. If we can get this, the topic will then be taken to parliament for discussion.” The petition can be found online at: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/71612

Could you benefit from a FREE Home Fire Safety Check? Local residents are been urged to take up FREE home fire safety checks from West Sussex Fire and Rescue to help prevent fires within the home. As a recent national Government survey found, more than one third of fires occurred in dwellings in Great Britain where no alarm was installed. The report also shockingly found that the risk of dying in a fire for elderly people (65 and over) is over twice as high as the average for all ages. “Our Home Fire Safety Checks have been crucial in reducing the number of people being injured in house fires,” Community Fire Safety Officer Jackie Boyle explains. 1 8 - Community

“The Home Safety Check is free and we prioritise the visits for those most at risk of a fire. The local fire crew will phone to arrange a convenient time to call round, offer straightforward fire safety advice, and fit smoke alarms if needed.” West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service wants to especially reach those who:

• Use a Community Alarm service like Careline or Lifeline • Have a cognitive impairment affecting their ability to remember things or retain information, such as dementia To request a Home Fire Safety Check call free on 0800 328 6487 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire

• Are 65 or over and live alone • Have a physical disability or frailty affecting their ability to summon help or escape in an emergency • Have a sensory impairment or difficulty hearing a standard smoke alarm To advertise call - 01293 824088

Successful Volunteer Fair Returns to East Grinstead Saturday 14th February sees the return of East Grinstead’s volunteer fair, organised by the town’s Community and Voluntary Service. As last year’s fair was inundated with local residents taking the opportunity to meet with local organisations and charities, the 2015 fair hopes to see even more people get involved within the community! “Last year’s fair at the library was a huge success, and local organisations are very keen for us to run it again.” EGCVS centre manager, Mandy Cunningham says. “If you are thinking of volunteering and just want to find out more about what is on offer, come along and chat to one of us. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and you can gain enormously from it.” Just one organisation who benefitted from last February’s fair was Greenstede Talking News:”We were very pleased by the amount of interest we received at the Volunteers’ Fair and I am delighted to say we have recruited three new listeners as a result of having a stall there,” Ken Jordan from the charity says. Twenty-five local charities and voluntary organisations will be on-hand to talk to visitors about the variety of exciting roles that they have available, between 10am -1pm in East Grinstead Library. Choosing fabrics for the home Patterned, textured, subtle or spectacular, fabrics can transform a room. How to choose fabrics Before buying, ask to borrow a swatch or length of fabric so you can see how the fabric looks in situ, at different times of the day and night. Ask these questions before you start: • Width? The wider the fabric, the better the value, and the less sewing will be required. 140cm is average. • Weight? Heavier fabrics are usually too bulky for small projects, while lighter fabrics usually wear more quickly. • Durability? Fabric is divided into categories depending on whether it will be subjected to light, general or heavy domestic use. • Washable? And, if so, has it been pre-shrunk? • If it’s patterned, what size is the repeat? Large patterns require more fabric so that you can match the repeats. Types of fabric Fabrics are composed of natural or synthetic fibres, or blends of them, and made using a wide variety of weaves. FIBRES

Silk comes in intense colours and has an attractive, lustrous surface. Viscose is made from wood pulp. It is hard-wearing and durable. Wool is breathable, warm, naturally water-resistant and available in a wide range of thicknesses and textures. WEAVES Bouclé has a looped pile.

LOOSE COVERS • Choose a fabric that is washable and substantial enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to be comfortable: medium-weight cottons, linens or blends, or light wools are all ideal.

Jacquards feature a complex, raised pattern. • Very thick, heavy fabrics will be too bulky for small window openings. Moiré is a water-mark pattern, often found on silks. • Sheer fabrics will not hold a crisp fold and will allow light through. Plain weaves have a smooth surface. Satin is heavy with a lustrous surface, usually made from silk or polyester.

CUSHIONS • Choose almost any fabric, within reason.

Twill weave produces diagonal or zig-zag lines on the surface.

• Try using remnants from fabric used elsewhere in the room

Velvet may be made from a variety of fibres and features a luxurious, soft pile.

BED AND TABLE LINEN • Light to medium weight cottons, linens and cotton or linen blends are best.

Cotton can range from lightweight muslin What to use where to heavy canvas and is the most commonly UPHOLSTERY used fabric for home furnishings. • Hard-wearing, tightly woven fabrics Linen has a lovely drape and lustre, is are best for most upholstery. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2015? Visit www.pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. Pippa sends them to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email with advice on ensuring great results.

Satay Vegetable Skewers

With Spring Onion Noodles Serves 4 Ready in 30 Mins If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.

Ingredients 100g crunchy peanut butter 25g creamed coconut, chopped 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed 4 tbsp soy sauce 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces 4 thick slices of aubergine 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges 3 tbsp sesame oil 4 nests fine egg noodles 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Place the peanut butter, Preheat a cast-iron coconut, chilli powder and 3 griddle pan until almost 1 garlic in a small pan with 180ml smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary.

Par-boil the peppers in 2 a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat

dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges.

oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred.

Meanwhile, cook the 4boiling noodles in a large pan of water for 3-4 minutes

until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying pan and add a little oil. 40 - Food and Drink

School’s Out, It’s Check up Time While the school holidays are about spending quality time having fun as a family, it also provides the perfect opportunity to fit in those appointments that you’ve been putting off. With the February half term break just around the corner, get those FREE check-ups booked in, as local healthcare professionals explain spending just ten minutes out of a half term holiday can be beneficial to your child’s overall health: “Children rarely complain about their sight, but often show in their behaviour that there may be a problem,” Alex Marcou from Alexander Opticians explains. “This can include sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes a lot, holding objects very close to the face and blinking a lot. If you notice one eye turning

For instance, a lot of parents do not realise that fruit juices cause decay because they have very high sugar content.”

As 80% of a child’s learning is accomplished through sight, regular optician appointments (recommended once a year, between the ages of 4-16) can spot many underlying conditions and ensure your child learns to their full potential, whilst twiceyearly dental check-ups are recommended to keep teeth and gums healthy.

Ann King, practice manager of Concordia Dental also makes a valid point about routine appointments keeping the fear of visiting the dentist at bay, during later life: “The earlier the visits begin, the more relaxed the child will be. This will help the child get used to the noises, smells and surroundings and prepare them for future visits. They will learn techniques to protect their teeth from decay, “A recent national survey of and get them into a good children’s oral health has found routine to provide them with that more than 1 in 10 three strong and healthy teeth for a year old children have visible lifetime.” signs of decay,” Dr Andrew Hopkins of Oakmead Dental To find your nearest care says. “A check-up gives us optician or dentist visit: a valuable opportunity to give www.nhs.uk/Service-Search. important preventive advice.

Seven reasons

why you should love yourself first The shops are full of pink cards, fluffy pink toys and symbols of love. But who is the most important person to love in your life? I suspect most of you will not put yourself first. But you should do. Why are you so important? Why should you love yourself first? You spend 24/7 with yourself. It’s a long time to spend with someone you are not happy with. Ask yourself right now, do you always say ‘things never go right for me’. Yes? But it’s not healthy. So try to treat yourself like your own best friend, because you are. What about your health? When you are constantly arguing with those little negative thoughts in your head, it’s a real stress on your body. Your mind wants you to think that all your thoughts are correct! But the truth is that your mind is just one part of you. It isn’t all of you. Hypnotherapy, NLP and many other therapies can help you see this. Your decision-making will be more positive when you love and appreciate yourself. The fastest way to start to get rid of those negative thoughts 50 - Health

is to admit you should stop listening to the rubbish your mind is telling you. Self love improves self image. You are drawn to a person who smiles at you in the street or makes that effort to say hello as they serve you in a shop. Try smiling or chatting with the person who walks past you everyday in the street. How does it feel to do this? Loving yourself can help you look and feel younger. If you are always wearing a frown and hiding your head towards your shoulders, it ages you. A little known fact - it takes a lot less muscles to smile than to frown. Loving yourself can help you find love. Don’t hide all those things you find quirky about yourself. Those features are the ones that will help you find your soulmate. Love your uniqueness. Give yourself a break. You’re not perfect. No one is. It is OK to have an off day. Give yourself a duvet day to watch that Romcom. Becky Wells, www.beckywells.com Personal Development Hypnotherapist www.payitforwarduk.net

What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural state of heightened awareness that occurs within all of us. It allows us to open our minds to beneficial suggestions and allows the client to use their imagination to make positive changes. A brief way to describe a feeling similar to hypnosis is that moment you’ve been watching TV and not heard a word that’s been said, even though you’ve been staring straight at the screen. Alternatively it’s the car journey where you wonder how you got to a certain place. Your mind is on auto-pilot and must have been in control, otherwise there would probably have been an accident. What can hypnotherapy help with? • Agoraphobia • Anxiety • Blushing • Confidence Building • Depression • Fears and Phobias • Gambling • Guilt • Habits and Compulsions • IBS • Insecurity • Insomnia • Memory Recall • Nail biting • Nervousness • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Pain Control • Panic Attacks • Public Speaking • Smoking • Stress Management • Timidity • Trauma • Weight Problems • Worry To advertise call - 01293 824088
