Andrew Hopkins BDS Owner for 25 Years

Paul Cassidy BDS, DPDS Implant Surgeon

01342 325363 - 48 Moat Road, East Grinstead

BIG WELCOME TO IMPLANT SURGEON PAUL CASSIDY Andrew says, “ Dental implants have been a saviour for those patients with uncomfortable dentures and others that have lost teeth and are unable to chew properly. Modern materials are far more natural looking and numbing techniques virtually pain free. Paul has been a valuable addition both to the team here at Oakmead and also to the local community. Patients no longer have to travel to implant clinics further afield because we also accept referrals from other local surgeries. His surgical expertise at Oakmead has also meant patients don’t have to join long waiting lists for wisdom tooth removal and other surgical procedures.” Paul qualified from Queen’s University Belfast, and completed Postgraduate training in Oral Surgery and Sedation at The University of Bristol. He has worked in practices specializing in Implantology and Oral Surgery for 15 years, and has received training from leaders in Dental Implantology and bone-grafting. Implant treatments offered by Paul range from the replacement of a single missing tooth right through to fixed alternatives for denture wearers. On a more personal level, he is a keen musician and has played guitar in a number of bands, although it appears his music career is destined to remain purely amateur!

Seeing a way forward How an East Grinstead group is helping people with sight problems By Caroline Hardy

H

aving a sight problem can sometimes leave people feeling lonely and isolated. Unable to go places by themselves, many stay at home with little to look forward to in terms of days out or having fun. East Grinstead Visually Impaired Group aims to change this by offering friendship, along with a range of events, to those who have problems with their vision. Jan Barnard, the group’s fundraiser and Marketing Officer, is hoping more visually impaired people within the East Grinstead area, will join the group. “It can be lonely to lose or partially lose your sight, but

joining our group means people can make friends with the same condition,” she says. “We are a very friendly group where everyone gets along and enjoys meeting up. The club is an outlet for people not able to take public transport to get places but who want to get out more.” Transport is offered from door to door. The group, which used to be known as the East Grinstead Blind Club, meets year round on the second Monday of each month at Swan Mead Day Centre, in Queens Road. Lunch is provided, along with entertainment and a talk in winter and visits out from April onwards.

Recent outings have included tea and shopping at a local garden centre, visits to Heaven Farm in Danehill and Barnsgate Manor, near Crowborough, and lunch at a hotel in Eastbourne followed by a walk on the pier. “Current membership stands at around 25 and we would like to see this number rise,” says Jan. “We are a mixed club with an age group of late 50s to 90s. Members have a range of sight problems, such as being partially sighted or having cataracts, but everyone is welcome.” The group is run as an independent charity with members making a small donation for lunches and teas. Jan hopes more people in the East Grinstead area with sight problems will join in the group’s activities. “Just come along and see what we do,” she says. “We’re a happy bunch, enjoying ourselves and having fun, and you will get a great welcome!”

Carnival to get the Olympics party started Everybody samba! It’s time to get into the party spirit at East Grinstead’s first carnival in 20 years. By Caroline Hardy

W

ith the 2016 Olympics starting in Rio de Janeiro later this summer, the carnival will aim to get everyone in the mood providing a great day out for all the family. The event, which will have an Olympic theme with a samba flavour, is to be held on Sunday, July 3, and includes a 600-strong parade through the town. The carnival has been organised by Rex Whittaker, with support from Town Council representative Cllr Norman Mockford. Rex is also a councillor but is acting in a private capacity. “For the last couple of years some of my Town Council colleagues have thought it would be a great idea to reintroduce a yearly carnival to East Grinstead as the last one was approximately 20 years ago,” says Rex. “The town has lots of other High Street civic events throughout the year and many people that I meet told me that they love these events and we should have more. “So last year I decided to bite

the bullet and get the project going. “It is not a Town Council organised event, but the Council agreed to support the organisation by providing an outside body rep, which is where Norman came on board. “The carnival procession will conclude at East Court mansion where the Town Council has arranged for an East Court Live free music family event, so the two events should dovetail in perfectly.” The parade will start at Railway Approach at 12noon then proceed to London Road, along the High Street and College Lane to East Court. Olympic medallist Richard Leman, who won gold with the British hockey team in 1988, will head the parade with his medal and 2012 Olympic torch, followed by the Town Mayor and May Queen. Sackville School Samba Band will provide some Rio atmosphere. “We are encouraging most people to parade on foot but we will have some vintage buses, and the local Fire Station will be parading too,” Rex adds.

“The emphasis is very much on youth participation and will concentrate on our schools, sports clubs, Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts as well as the youth council and volunteer groups.” The fun continues at the Town Council-run East Court Live event, which is on from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. The show will feature Kylie tribute act Rogue Minogue, along with local group Tar Babies, East Grinstead Choir and more from the Sackville School Samba Band. “It’s going to be a great family day out for all ages,” says town promotions manager Dawn Spalding. “Food will be available along with cocktails and mocktails with a carnival theme, or people can bring their own picnics to enjoy with the live music.” Entry to the East Court Live event is free and there will also be a pay bar and barbecue.

Reconnecting to the land and our food A Forest Row farm where food is produced in harmony with nature and the earth By Caroline Hardy

C

ustomers come from as far as London and Brighton to Tablehurst Farm, in Forest Row, where they can buy food including meat, fruit and vegetables that have been grown using biodynamic principles. As a biodynamic farm, Tablehurst embraces the idea that the earth is a living organism and that each farm is an individual organism within it. It is a concept that Jeremy Smith, the farm’s development manager, says is growing in popularity. “The farm and garden are run as a holistic organism, and all fertility, as well as most of the food for the animals, is produced on the farm itself,” Jeremy says. A biodynamic farm functions as a strong, self-sustaining and vibrant single organism that recognises and respects the basic principles at work in nature, Jeremy adds. “It is a complete system in which all the different components of the farm are seen as parts of a greater whole. With farm animals at the centre a self-sustaining, balanced and harmonious environment is the result.

10

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

“As a community farm Tablehurst seeks to provide possibilities for people to understand farming and food production better. We encourage people to come, as visitors and customers, to re-connect to the land and their food.” Most of the farm’s customers are from the local area but others come from further afield. “I was one of these,” says Jeremy. “Before my wife and I moved to Forest Row, I used to make frequent trips from Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire a round trip of 150 miles - just because we loved the wonderful biodynamic food and couldn’t get it elsewhere. “Tablehurst is a mixed farm – which is quite unusual these days - and produces meat, rearing beef cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, arable crops and grains, as well as vegetables and soft fruit.” The farm and garden also supply the Tablehurst café, a popular venue for families with young children, and with shoppers who like to enjoy the views over the fields towards Ashdown Forest. Both Tablehurst and its sister farm Plaw Hatch, in Sharpthorne, are experiencing significant growth in demand year-on-year.

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

“We’re finding we have to employ more people,” says Jeremy. “Young farmers and growers want to stay with us, and some of them are starting families here, which is wonderful.” The farm has a series of special events coming up, including an Open Day on Sunday, July 10, the first since 2011. There will be a food court, children’s play activities, craft and produce stalls, talks and music, tours of the farm by tractor and trailer, and more. Tablehurst Farm is situated in London Road, Forest Row. For more details, call 01342 823173.

Townscape 2016 – History Reframed By Rachel Whitlam

E

ight artists from local contemporary art group, ‘Example’ have initiated another community art project and are working with twelve young people and other town folk over this Summer. Townscape 2016 comprises of two exhibitions showing simultaneously in town centre venues and the exhibition includes sculpture, printmaking, photography, painting and stitch. The artists were shown a range of artefacts by East Grinstead Museum curator Jessica Hadfield, including a Jurassic footprint and a key to a local convent. Each artist picked something from the collection that intrigued them and began sketching. Artists then went

into schools and asked teachers to select students who would benefit from some professional monitoring. Students were invited to participate in Saturday workshops and a ‘night at the museum’, which has led to students generating their own images that reflect aspects of local history. The resulting work is currently on display at the town library. ‘Example’ began talking about the project as far back as 2014, when two of the artists involved in the Townscape project worked with curator, Jessica Hadfield. Jessica said, “I am delighted to be working with Example on this project to find new ways to use and interpret the Museum’s varied collection. Working with the artists and students, whether they have chosen an item from our Museum Store behind the scenes or an item on display, has provided us with a valuable opportunity to revisit and find new meaning in our collections. Each item the artist has worked with as part of this project will be displayed as part of the Townscape 2016 giving us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the item and interpret it in a new light by means of the artist’s response to it.”

Hannah Buckley, Artist and Visual Art Educator told me, “She was extremely supportive of the project and discussed the possibility of basing the next Townscape around the Museum collection. It was an opportunity for each artist to choose something in the collection that they were drawn to. We wanted to see the collection through the eyes of an artist rather than from a curatorial point of view. My own artwork is based on Museum drawings by Molly Letaigne, who worked as an artist for McIndoe, illustrating his surgical procedures. I have been reading about the WWII pilots and the injuries they received to their hands from burns or frostbite if they were not wearing gloves.” ‘Example’ had already worked with Sackville School on previous projects, creating the subway artwork with support from MSDC and subsequently Hannah has joined the art department at the school as a teacher. Imberhorne students are also involved in the new project.

Sackville student, Ellen Stocken said, ‘It’s a great way of getting submerged in the history of the town, exploring qualities that serve as an inspiration’ The main exhibition launched in May and June and family and

adult workshops will follow on, allowing more members of the public to reframe history, through drawing objects from the collection. “Our aim is to deliver high quality visual arts to our community.

We are a small town and not everyone can get up to London and visit the big galleries but we want to inspire the younger generation of artists by providing role models and helping them to develop their skills.”

The exhibition is open to the public in two separate venues. East Grinstead Museum, Cantulupe Rd, 01342 302233 Wednesday May 25 – Saturday September 4 (Wed – Sun) East Grinstead Library, West St, 01342 410121 Friday June 3 – Saturday September 3 (Mon – Sat)

Sussex Day 2016 By Rachel Whitlam

W

hen I first moved to the area more than 11 years-ago, I felt as if I had gone on holiday and had inadvertently forgotten to go home! There is so much to celebrate in Sussex - we have some of the most beautiful countryside in England, incredible wildlife and a vast array of local attractions. Over 80% of Sussex is rural and over 50% is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sussex has a unique landscape, from the sandstone hills of the High Weald, through the patchwork of pasture and woodland, over the rolling Sussex Downs to the coastal plain, with its wooded harbours and expansive beaches. Sussex Day is on the June 16 and there will be events across the county to celebrate Sussex and its rich heritage and traditions. The date was originally chosen because it is St Richard’s Day, the country’s patron saint and Bishop of Chichester from 1245 until he died in 1253. The official flag of Sussex was first registered under the name of Saint Richard’s Flag after a campaign was started in 2010. The flag depicts six gold martlets on a blue field, an emblem that was first used by John Speed in 1611 which represents the ‘Kingdom of the South Saxons’. The six martlets symbolise the six historical ‘rapes’ when land was divided and owned. Sussex has inspired many writers including Jane Austen, J M Barrie, William Blake (Jerusalem), John Keats and Alfred Lord Tennyson, to name just a few and even has its own distinctive language, which although mostly now died out, was once widely spoken across the county. Different dialects existed between downland and Wealden people and it is believed the people of the Weald had the most impenetrable accents.

16

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

The words can be found in Old Dutch, Old Welsh, Anglo Saxon with a smattering of 14th Century French and Scandinavian. Much of the dialect is thought to have originated from Sussex fishermen and the links they had from the French coast and the Netherlands. Interestingly, gender is always feminine and there is a Sussex saying, Everything in Sussex is a She except a Tom Cat and she’s a He’.

Do you ever hear any of these Sussex words used today? Boco – much (from the French beaucoup) Bread and Cheese – a true friend Chipper – happy Dosset – small portion Dursn’t – must not Goistering – loud feminine laughter Jiggered – surprised Kiddy – friend or workmate Surelye – this would be added to the end of a sentence to add emphasis Twitten – a path or alleyway ‘We won’t be Druv’ is the unofficial motto of Sussex that means, ‘we will not be driven’. It suggests that the people of Sussex have minds of their own and won’t be forced against their will and told what to do. It is still used by some of the Sussex Bonfire Societies today.

To help you celebrate Sussex Day this June, here are a couple of suggestions, but equally, you could just take your picnic hamper packed with Sussex produce and a bottle of Sussex bubbly into the woods and catch the last of the Bluebells. June 2 - 4 - “Ephemeral” Festival of Flowers, Sackville College, High Street, East Grinstead £7 (supporting Sackville College Restoration Fund). June 10 - 18 - South Downs Way Walk Cover a small section or join up with an organised walk along the route (av. 11 miles each day)

June 16 - Sussex Day Celebration, Chapel Green, Crowborough 6-8pm. Includes a beer tent, cream teas, hot food and a dog show. June 16 - The Redoubt Fortress, Eastbourne - free entry to all. Last month’s edition featured the mythical Wyvern that can be found towards the lower end of London Road, best viewed from the opposite side, outside Rusdens. The Wyvern is a legendary creature that has a dragon’s head and wings with a reptilian body. It is often seen in heraldry and frequently seen as the mascot of schools and sports teams in the UK and America. There are a number of Wyverns on roof tops in the area as the finial was made by brick yards across the county.

A taste of Sparkling Sussex By Rachel Whitlam

T

he revered Oz Clarke recently named Sussex as one of his special places which comes as no surprise when you take a closer look at the calibre of our local wines. As Sussex brands increasingly convert sceptics with their quality and taste, they quietly win a continuing trail of awards. In addition to the beautiful wines our vineyards produce, they also provide opportunities for sampling, touring and meeting the Vintners - creating an experience for all the senses rather than just a simple tipple. A shining example is the150 -acre Kingscote Estate nestled in the Kingscote Valley, on the outskirts of East Grinstead. This June sees the launch of the estates first ever sparkling wine, named Kingscote Cuvee Christen 2014, which pays tribute to Vineyard founder, Christen Monge, who sadly passed away last May. Owen Elias, executive winemaker calls it, “youthful, fresh and distinctive.” In April, they released Kingscote White Pinot Noir 2014, Fat Fume 2014, Albarino Bacchus 2013 and The Bacchus 2013/14.

Whether the Champenoise are worried remains to be seen but Tattinger recently invested in an apple orchard in neighbouring Kent. Tattinger President Pierre-Emmanuel Tattinger says this purchase was about creating something special to show appreciation of the UK’s support for Champagne. Not forgetting that the South facing ground is the same chalky subsoil as found in the Champagne region of France providing an ideal microclimate to produce high quality grapes. Gravetye Manor’s Head Sommelier, Sean Arthur began his training whilst working at South Lodge Hotel, near Horsham in 2011. His passion for wines was noted during an interview for their Michelin starred restaurant and, since that time, he has passed various exams in wines and spirits and attended scholarships in Champagne with Perrier Jouet and Moet & Chandon. Talking recently about Tattinger’s purchase, he said, “Some of the Champagne community see English wine as another Prosecco, some see it as a potential business and want to get involved. I’ve seen the effect of climate change, which is evident in places like Chateau Neuf du Pape where the alcohol percentage has noticeably increased over the last 10 years. With English wine, you need to add sugar not to sweeten it but to increase the length of the fermentation so you end up with a wine that is at least 12% alcohol, which is an added cost to the vineyard.” When asked about local wine, he said that last year was a good wine producing year and 2014 wines are still going strong. “The Bolney Bubbly is light crisp and has a very fresh style. It’s uncomplicated and good for sitting outside on a sunny afternoon. At a recent wedding, we suggested Bluebell Classic Cuvee which is a classic blend of Chardonay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, a standard blend of grapes for a Champagne style wine.”

Sean spoke about the importance of using local Sussex produce in the restaurant. “For me, the best thing about Gravetye is the way we use mostly locally sourced products, including a fantastic selection of English still and sparkling wine. The support I receive here from local vineyards such as Bolney, Bluebell and Ridgeview is something that very few sommeliers can boast to have. It is hugely important to get a food and wine pairing right to really give the best possible experience. “

You can join Sean Arthur at Gravetye on a Provence Wine Master Class Tasting of 6 wines, drinks, aperitif and a 3 course lunch. Cost £95. For full details contact Gravetye Manor on 01342 810567. Many of the Sussex Vineyards are open to the public and tours can be arranged incorporating lunch or tea.

COVER STORY

Taking centre stage… Staging a show in the medieval grandeur of the Garden of England By Jacob White

Located in the beautiful Weald of Kent, the grand Hever Castle offers a fun-fi lled day-out for visitors of all ages. However, just you wait and see what else the castle has to offer – it comes alive of a summer with stage performances for all tastes! This summer at the 11th-century castle and gardens you will be able to enjoy stage performances which are more Billie Holiday than Henry VIII, more Bee Gees than Anne Boleyn and more Mozart than mazes. Time for the theatre to take centre stage!

L

ocated on the Two Sisters Lawn adjacent to Anne Boleyn Walk, the Festival Theatre is an open-air venue surrounded by delightful flower beds and an abundance of ornamental trees. This year’s summer festival promises to present a wider selection of shows than ever. The setting in the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I couldn’t be better - the stage is fully covered and includes tiered-seating with the majority of seats also under cover so whatever the weather you won’t need your brolly! Running for more than 30 years the Hever Festival Theatre continues to grow in popularity, drawing audiences from far and wide, Louise Griffiths of the festival theatre puts the theatre’s popularity down to the special, unique location of the venue.

Louise said: “The fact it’s an open-air auditorium makes it unique but add to that it’s a magical area – Hever Castle with its awardwinning gardens makes for a very special setting.’ “As we are open-air but boast covered seating we offer the best of both worlds – whatever the weather and in Britain it can be inclement, you’ll stay dry!” The next couple of months highlights include spectacular shows celebrating the music of the Bee Gees, Billie Holiday and for the first time at Hever Opera Brava present Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and the return of Hever Festival Theatre favourites Kent Rep. This year the Kent Rep will be performing the Sir Alan Ayckbourn classic, Time and Time Again – premiering in 1971, the show revolves around the complicated lovelife of teacher Leonard who disrupts four lives.

A witty tale of British eccentricity, complete with mistaken identity, Battenburg cake and a fishing gnome - an amusing story of lost love. Kent Rep is a professional Kent-based theatre company formed more than 30 years-ago and gaining a loyal following across the county. The company’s mission is to create popular enjoyable theatre productions for local people in the stunning Hever Festival Theatre and is now back by popular demand! Louise added: “Whether you come to a matinee performance and enjoy the post-show ambience of the gardens or you attend an evening performance and picnic beforehand it’s a visit to remember.” For evening performances, you can enter the grounds from 6.30pm onwards where you can enjoy the ambience of the castle and gardens by bringing a picnic or, you can choose to eat at the Guthrie Pavilion restaurant, or, simply wander through the magnificent gardens ahead of a performance.

For a comprehensive list of performance dates and for theatre bookings at The Festival Theatre which concludes with the Last Night of the Hever Proms on Sunday, August 28, visit: www.heverfestival.co.uk

Theatre images courtesy of Graham Silvester

After matinee performances you can remain in the gardens after the performance until the grounds are closed for the day which makes for a wonderful day of performance art meets history and spectacular horticulture and this year’s season is packed full of great shows and top quality entertainment!

Competition Time: We’ve teamed-up with the Hever Festival Theatre to offer you the chance to win a pair of tickets to the performance of Time and Time Again between Thursday, August 18 and Sunday, August 21. For more information on how to win, visit our website: www.rhuncovered.co.uk

FOOD AND DRINK

The perfect pick! Wimbledon fortnight just wouldn’t be the same without rain, Andy Murray’s heroics and strawberries with cream. June is here, and so is a rich, juicy, fruit harvest just waiting to be enjoyed. What better than going-out and picking your own? The best of the fruit this month is cherries and berries... By Jacob White Cherries Are they the new super-food? Last year, scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University in the US claimed eating cherries helped athletes recover from exercise pain. 55 runners were found to experience less pain after training if they had drank cherry juice. Good to know! Cherries, should be picked when they are of maximum size, if they are picked before they are fully mature they will not ripen off the tree. Cherries keep longer if the stems remain attached and can be stored in the refrigerator to be enjoyed for two to three days after. Blueberries A true favourite of our American cousins, the fruit which is so often deliciously served in a muffin or with a pancake, is only ripe when easy to pick – if they show resistance, they simply aren’t ready. Another tell-tell sign if the blueberry isn’t ripe is a red ring around the top of the berry where the fruit is attached to the stem. After picking, cool blueberries as quickly as possible to around or 1.5°C or 35°F.

Blackberries Pick blackberries as they become soft - it is best to pick early in the day because the berries do not spoil as quickly as those picked in the afternoon. Not many people know that! Blackberries that are picked at the proper time of day and season, handled carefully, and then stored in a cool place will stay in good condition for several days after. Strawberries Often-ranked as Britain’s favourite fruit, the strawberry is synonymous with the month of June - a staggering 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten at the Wimbledon Championships alone, together with 7,000 litres of cream! It is best to pick strawberries in the morning when the berries are cool and the berry should be picked with the stem attached by grasping the stem between the thumb and forefinger and pinching it off of the main plant. For best storage, keep strawberries at a temperature below 4.5°C or 40°F.

It’s over to you, happy picking!

For our August edition we want to hear from you on gluten-free cooking, eating and dining-out. Do you have any recommendations for RH restaurants or cafes with great gluten-free offerings, or do you know of any great products, resources or recipes? Please get in touch.

HEALTH National Smile Month 2016

Smile And The World Smiles With You It’s said that there are hundreds of languages around the world but a smile speaks them all – this month brings us National Smile Month, running between May 16 and June 16. So, it’s time for an oral check-up! By Jacob White

A

healthy smile can be a great asset – it not only benefits us socially, in our careers and relationships, it also has more practical benefits. Our teeth help us chew and digest food, they help us to talk and speak clearly and they also help to define our face shape. We’ve got to look after these beauties! National Smile Month, organised by the independent charity Dental Health Foundation is a chance to take a refreshed look at our oral health, learn more about why a healthy smile is so important and share tips on how to improve and maintain a healthy smile which will make you feel and look good. Dentists say there are three key principles to developing great oral health; brush your teeth at least twice a day, visit your dentist regularly and limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks - these are a very good starting point for a healthy smile. Maintaining good oral health is a fairly simple task. Failure to maintain good oral health over a long period of time can sometimes lead to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment. Poor oral health can lead to direct problems such as gum disease and tooth decay as well as indirect problems such as an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. The benefits of developing and maintaining a healthy smile are clear. By following some simple rules you can bring about some remarkably positive differences to many aspects of your life - from improved self-confidence to career and relationship success, a healthy smile can truly transform you! For more information on National Smile Month, visit: nationalsmilemonth.org facebook.com/NationalSmileMonth/ Or twitter.com/smilemonth using the hashtag #smilemonth

Top Tips • Caring for your mouth: brush your teeth at least twice a day, last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste • Visit your dentist: attend as often as they recommend. A dental hygienist can also help give you advice on preventing further dental problems • Diet and oral health: Chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking to protect your teeth and gums between meals (especially after sugary goods) *All statistics from nationalsmilemonth.org Stat’s a Fact! • One in four adults don’t brush twice a day (including a third of men), with one in ten admitting they regularly forget to brush their teeth • Half of adults surveyed say they visit their dentist every six months with 21% saying they visit their dentist annually • One in every seven adults who had ever been to a dentist suffers from extreme dental anxiety • 84% of all adults have at least one or more fillings *All statistics from British Dental Health Foundation

ADVERTORIAL

Choosing a builder with confidence….

T

he building industry in general doesn’t have the best reputation. We often have conversations in the office about how useful it would be for potential customers to have a point of reference, where they could have access to a database of tradesmen who have not carried out works to an acceptable level or have not perhaps worked with the customers best interests at heart. A ‘Blacklist’ of sorts! Obviously there are huge legal implications to ‘naming and shaming’, so as consumers, we find ourselves relying on sites such as Checkatrade, Which or Trustatrader. The honest truth is, it is not as hard as one might think becoming a member of these sites. Although they are a very useful tool in choosing your tradesman, you may not always be getting the full picture as to who you are dealing with. We would recommend also considering the following: • Before works start, be clear on what you are trying to achieve. You would not be expected to know the fine detail but it is important that you have a firm idea in your mind of how you would like your property to work for you. A good builder will be able to advise you on this during your initial discussions, and may also offer you alternatives that you hadn’t thought of. • Always obtain more than one quote – this is an obvious one but needless to say, having a point of comparison is crucial. This doesn’t mean you should always go with the cheapest option, it is a way of comparing the look and feel of the company too and how they operate behind the scenes. • Request a site visit to a previous customer who has had similar work carried out. Ask if they would have done anything differently, or if there were any minor issues along the way. This way, you can anticipate and avoid any niggles that may come along.

• Check not only your tradesmen’s insurance but also ask them to confirm in writing that they hold current insurance details for any subcontractors they may use. • Ensure there is a contract in place, documenting works to be carried out and outlining timescales and payment schedules. • Finally, use your head AND your heart. It is absolutely vital that you like and can communicate effectively with your tradesman, particularly on large projects such as a loft conversion or an extension. If your builder has been lackadaisical in responding to any queries or concerns prior to the job starting or at quotation stage, communication may not be their strong point. A little more homework, prior to making a decision can help you to avoid any upsets along the way and facilitate a smooth project with a happy ending!

GARDENS

Plotting a vegetable garden By Pippa Greenwood

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long.

P

roducing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but if it’s well-fertilised, it will be adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo or the gorgeous burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer.

Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too.

When buying tomato plants, hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. Outdoor varieties can be grown in their own pot - if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun but sheltered from wind, so site your containers carefully. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s pleasing to the eye.

CHILDREN

The great outdoors makes for a great party! By Jacob White

Stumped for ideas for your child’s birthday party? Here are three party ideas with a difference which will make for an amazing summer birthday party without costing a small fortune! Your guests will have a blast on your child’s special day whether they’re a wannabe detective, Olympian, photographer, super-sleuth or the next Bear Grylls... 2. Olympic Party

3. Snapper Party

Just weeks away from the Rio Olympics, why not bring a taste of Brazil closer to home?

If your parties have been more chore than cheer this techy party will shake things up!

Borrow a field, a playground or use the beach, split your guests into teams and host a series of Olympic events, something similar to adult circuit training you will be familiar with from your visits to the gym.

Developing children’s creativity, this party is all about capturing fun. Borrow some digital cameras, phones with cameras or, ask the kids to bring their phone or iPod with them.

Encourage them to collect things as they go - but nothing to the detriment of the environment! The collected items can be used to make a collage on your return home – time to get creative.

However, for fun turn this Olympic Party on its head make the guests run the 100 metres in wellies or some other novel way of turning the average Olympic sport into something more whacky for fun!

Split the guests into two groups, give them a camera and under adult supervision provide them with a list of landmarks or items you would like them to photograph.

At the end of the party, give everyone their collage and a magnifying glass to take home.

Don’t forget to hand out medals at the end for the best or simply the craziest achievements!

1. Nature Detective Party A party guaranteed to combine both having fun and learning about the natural world! Find some land or a public footpath, give the party guests a notepad, a pen and a magnifying glass and get them to work as a team to identify things on the walk. Can they recognise trees, plants or animals?

ere at Wee One’s Day Nursery & Pre-School, we have enjoyed celebrating our first birthday, with our amazing ‘Wee One’s’, parents and staff. We had great fun at our teddy bears picnic! We recently had our first Ofsted inspection and were very pleased with our ‘Good’ rating in all areas! The inspector stated that ‘staff are skilled at providing a broad range of interesting

activities and promoting play. Children are eager and confident to make choices and come up with new ideas’. ‘She also observed that ‘Children are well motivated to explore the interesting learning environment’. Our approach to learning is child led. We follow their individual interests and watch them develop and learn through play in an environment that is catered to them. One of our parents who has been with us from day one said ‘allowing our child to play is one of my biggest wishes, he is happiest when he can play and learn without knowing’. Another parent said ‘we couldn’t be happier with Wee One’s and always feel confident that my child is in competent, caring hands, thank you’. Our mission for our Wee One’s is quite simply ‘Learning to Play, Playing to Learn’. For more information please see details above.

Days-out with Dad What better way to make your father’s or grandfather’s day than to treat him to a special day-out? By Jacob White

With Father’s Day approaching on June 19, we’ve prepared a guide to perfect days-out in Surrey and Sussex to suit all tastes! 1. The foodie dad

5. The retro dad

2. The musical dad

6. The lad dad

3. The petrol head dad

7. The sporty dad

4. The alternative dad

8. The arty dad

This food and drink loving gent knows his filet mignon from his foie gras, has a wine rack to rival the best! He spends weekends at the local food market and he’s proud of his fine-food-fuelled belly. Father’s Day brunch and vineyard tour at Denbies on Sunday, June 19 – see: denbies.co.uk A dad with an appreciation of the world of music – possibly contemporary, or perhaps classical but whatever era he appreciates, he does so with fervor – he’s vibrant and a lover of sound. Father’s Day jazz lunch at The Hawth on Sunday, June 19 – see: parkwoodtheatres.co.uk/theatre With a need for speed, this dad needs no introduction to fast cars and fast living. He will be able to talk for hours about cars, knowing all of the ins and out – plus he’s likely to look after your car too! Hever Castle super cars event on Sunday, June 19 – see: hevercastle.co.uk/whats-on/ The alternative dad loves things alternative. He’s a fan of skateboarding, craft beer, tattoos (he has a growing collection of his own), possibly a beard and probably has cooler taste in music than you. Merz featuring Julian Sartorius at The Green Door Store, Brighton Wednesday, June 15 – see: wegottickets.com

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

If your dad starts his sentences with “In my day” then he’s probably a retro dad, with a keen appreciation for good design. He is likely to struggle to identify with contemporary icons such as Adele. Father’s Day steam driver experience at Spa Valley Railway on Sunday, June 19 – see: spavalleyrailway.co.uk/events Fan of a few pints and a curry of a Friday evening, lad dad is best mates with your friends and is usually found in front of the telly or down the pub. He embarrasses you with his awful jokes. Tour of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium throughout June – see: seagullstickets.com This dad spends every moment he gets watching, playing and talking about sport. He’ll watch anything, no matter how obscure. Curling? Handball? Sporty Dad’s an expert in them all. The Arundel Cricket Festival Wednesday, June 22 – Sunday, June 26 – see: sussexcricket.co.uk The arty dad enjoys the finer things in life. He has a bookcase full of classic novels and obscure titles you’ve never heard of, an arthouse cinema DVD collection and an appreciation of good coffee. Glyndebourne Opera: Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg selected dates between Thursday, June 2 and Monday, June 27 – see: www.glyndebourne.com/tickets-and-whats-on RH Uncovered

PET CARE

A Dog-cation

Always Wagging Pet Care Services

By Jacob White

G

oing away, yet struck with guilt about leaving the dog? Feel confident you have picked the right kennel to care for your four-legged friend by following our guide, ensuring your dog has as good a break as you do! The best kennels should be clean and wellventilated, offer protection from the weather, provide adequate space for the size of the dog, and guarantee medical assistance if the dog gets sick in their care. All UK premises are governed by the Animal Boarding Establishments Act of 1963, the act is quite vague in its requirements and as a result premises vary considerably, so you need to do your research.

Key questions to ask: • • • • • • •

• • •

Can you visit the kennel in advance of booking? How much will it cost to keep your dog there? How much daily exercise would your dog get? Are they exercised in a run or lead-walked, if by lead-walk how far are they taken? What are the dogs fed and can you bring your own dog-food? How big are the kennels? Will your dog have access to an outdoor run? How is the risk of spreading disease minimised? If they insist on all dogs being vaccinated, they will want to see a vaccination certificate from you. Do they have insurance should your dog become ill during its stay? If your dog is on medication, are they happy to administer this? Even the best of kennels can lose a dog. How would they handle this?

Lastly, remember to book early especially when going away during peak season. Enjoy your break!

Theo Crunden is three years old. He was starved of oxygen at birth and suffered a brain injury as a result. He now has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, uncontrolled epilepsy, secondary dystonia, and is registered as blind. Theo’s mum, Lucy, has spoken about the daily challenges Theo and his family face. “Theo is up several times a night; he can’t turn himself and gets uncomfortable, so we need to help him.” Lucy explains, “We are up early as it takes around three hours to get Theo ready. He is on nine different types of medication at the moment, and the day starts with his first dose, which has to be given to him slowly through his feeding tube, followed by his breakfast. Then we dress Theo, which is a challenge as he is floppy but spasms frequently. If Theo is not at nursery, we normally start the morning with a physiotherapy or speech and language programme, followed with some sort of appointment. Then we repeat the process of medication and lunch, a small sleep in the afternoon, more medication, dinner, and eventually helping him get off to sleep. We first heard about Chestnut Tree through our paediatrician, we were struggling at home, we weren’t sleeping and things were just getting too much. When they first recommended a hospice I was shocked but my mind was soon put to rest when one of the Chestnut nurses, Laura, explained how they could help, and my perception was completely altered. The first time we visited Chestnut Tree House we thought it was absolutely incredible, the facilities are phenomenal. We find it really hard to find somewhere for Theo to enjoy, he needs stimulation and Chestnut provides that. What makes it even better is that we can do this as a family Theo’s little sister Mabel can also join in and enjoy playing with her brother. The members of staff are also amazing As well as being able to have weekend stays and use the day care facilities at Chestnut Tree House, we also plan to start using Chestnut Tree’s community team so that we can receive care at home. I would like to say a huge thank you to Chestnut Tree. We are so lucky to be able to go there, they are absolutely incredible.” To find out more about Chestnut Tree and the care that they provide in East Sussex, please visit their website www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/handsup.
