POLICE OFFICER

THE POSITION

The Town of Manteo is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.

The successful candidate will have the ability to perform a full range of general law enforcement duties designed to partner with the public to prevent and detect crime, address traffic safety issues, and respond to the needs of residents.

The successful candidate will engage in community-oriented policing duties such as business contact or connections, or check-ins; contact with assigned senior residents and contact with citizens while performing bike and foot patrols.

The successful candidate must exercise judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties; more difficult problems may be carried out under the direction of or in conjunction with a Police Lieutenant or the Police Chief who may respond to calls for assistance.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

Performs community oriented policing activities in a regularly assigned sector of the town, meeting residents and becoming familiar with buildings and locations; checks in with elderly residents and maintains emergency contact information on them; makes business check-ins; patrols the town in bike and on foot.

Patrols streets in a police car or on foot; checks doors and windows; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions, may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects; report dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions.

Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted. Investigates traffic accidents; issues traffic citation; directs traffic and participates in other emergency operation activities; issues parking citations; regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times at local schools and when traffic signal malfunctions or accidents require.

Performs initial investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects; presents findings in court. Apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to magistrate and/or County detention facilities. Operates a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to police headquarters; maintains vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standards working order. Prepares records and reports of activities; enters data into patrol car computers. Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; serves papers as needed. Assures assigned vehicle and equipment are maintained. Assists stranded motorists; gives information and directions to visitors and the general public. May provide training as a field training officer. Performs related duties as required.

DESIRED CAPABILITIES

The ideal candidate will have considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the Police Department, especially relating to search and seizure, traffic control, pursuit, and arrest.

The ideal candidate will perform community-oriented policing, patrol duties, traffic control, and follow-up investigations.

The ideal candidate to enter at the PO-I classification, applicant must have a minimum of 1-5 years of service in law enforcement plus Basic Radar, Intoxilizer, SFST & DWI Detection, Police Law Institute, and DCI Initial Certification. Applicants who do not have all of the PO-I certifications will enter at PO level.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The starting salary for PO is $49,518.73, PO I - is $51,994.67, PO II - is $54,594.41 and Master PO - is $60,190.34. The PO position receives a 5% increase after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

This position requires possession and completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training; possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants must have a valid NC driver's license and a high school diploma or equivalent. Only applicants with NC BLET Certification will be considered.
