

Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks involving manual labor requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment operation. Work involves general grounds maintenance work. Work also includes driving dump trucks to collect leaves, limbs, recyclables, appliances, furniture, and other yard waste and trash. This work includes working with a chipper and taking the waste to the appropriate landfill or station for disposal. Employees may also be involved in routine horticultural tasks and minor facility and equipment repairs. Work assignments are repetitive in nature and can usually be performed with limited supervision. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves. Employees are subject to hazards in property maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, dust, chemicals, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Work may be subject to OSHA blood-borne pathogen standards if the employee collects residential or commercial garbage. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Foreman for review, while in progress and upon completion to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that assignments are carried out correctly. Operates mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and other light equipment to cut, prune, and trim shrubbery and trees; rakes leaves, and removes fallen limbs and trash. The ideal candidate must be able to physically perform the basiclifeoperationalfunctionsofclimbing,balancing,stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mechanical equipment to participate in trades-related work, and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the workassigned.

The starting salary for this position is $44,914.96. Candidate must be a high school graduate or have a GED. Must have a valid N.C. Driver’s License. Must have a CDL license. Must have general knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and building maintenance and trash and yard waste collection. Have a working knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
