Big road race returns

WALKING footballers outside One Call Stadium, Mansfield.

A sporting first for Mansfield

MANSFIELD held its first walking football tournament at One Call Stadium, the home of Mansfield Town FC, organised by Shaun Hird, sports development officer at Mansfield District Council. Teams from Heanor, Hucknall, Wakefield and Mansfield took part on a league basis in wet conditions, playing each other twice, with the top two meeting in the final. Mansfield Senior Reds won seven and drew one of their eight matches before defeating Derbyshire League champions Heanor 3-1 in the final to become the first Mansfield walking football champions. Organisers thanked the district council for organising the event and Mansfield Town for allowing use of its facilities. p MANSFIELD’S Paralympic stars on the road to Rio, see back page.

THE Mansfield 10k returns for a second year on 21st August and will again be supporting Reach Learning Disability, which helps adults with learning difficulties. Anna Joyce, of Reach, thanked Mansfield District Council for its support, saying: “It is so encouraging that the council is so fully behind this event. It will not only be beneficial to people with learning disabilities in Mansfield but to the town as a whole.” McDonald’s, Slimming World and Mansfield Building Society are also among those backing the event. McDonald’s franchisee Jacqui Moore, who runs three restaurants including the one on West Gate, Mansfield, said: “As a local business owner, it’s great to see events like this taking place in Mansfield.” Runners, who will all receive a medal, will complete two laps, starting and ending in the Market Place. Mayor Kate Allsop said: “We’re glad to support such a worthy charity and to be working in partnership on such a fantastic event for our town. We encourage as many runners as possible to sign up. “There are a limited number of places and, with places running out quickly, we advise booking sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.” For further information and to register visit www.mansfield10k.co.uk
