THE Pinders team at the 5k inflatable race.
Charity race fun
STAFF at Mansfield opticians Pinders have raised £1,584.50 for APTCOO (A Place To Call Our Own), the charity it is supporting this year. They took part in a 5k inflatable obstacle run at Colwick Racecourse, Nottingham, and collected money at a tombola at Warsop Carnival. Staff at the Queen Street practice in Mansfield decided to join the obstacle race after looking for an interesting way to raise money for the Mansfieldbased charity. Optometrist Hannah Shooter, a triathlon champion, offered coaching sessions for the staff, who had an
average age of 47, a dislike of heights and no athletic ability. Six members of staff — Joanne, Martine, Jackie, Allyson, Jo and Derra — were joined by family and friends for a team of 12 for the race, with finishing times ranging from 27 to 90 minutes. A spokesman said: “We thank our families, work colleagues, friends and patients who sponsored and supported us, helping to raise a fantastic £1,267.” A total of £317.50 was raised at Warsop Carnival.
Scouts earn gold awards
SIX Scouts from Clipstone have hit the gold mark with special certificates from Chief Scout Bear Grylls. The six, all members of 1st Clipstone Scout Group, completed six activity and nine challenge badges to receive the Gold Badge — the highest award for their section. Charlotte Chadwick, Tai Clayton, Kieran Thompson, Sam Truscott, Luis Cantrill and Jacob Swiffin (right) received their awards at the AGM of Mansfield and District Scouts. Jacob Swiffin (12) said: “I like being a Scout because we do a lot of activities and spend a lot of time outdoors. I didn’t realise that we had done so much and we were all going to get an award.” The news impressed Alex PeaceGadsby, the Scout Association’s Chief Commissioner for England, who said: “I’m so proud and impressed with
everyone’s hard work and dedication that has led to them achieving the highest award that a Scout can get.” Speaking on behalf of the scout group, chairman of trustees Jim Gibson said: “I congratulate the scouts on their Gold awards, which reflect just how much effort and commitment they have put in to being a Scout.”
Also receiving awards were Steve Gough and Karen Gough, who achieved their Wood Badge, which meant they have successfully completed three years of training. Steve, a Scout leader, and Karen, an assistant Scout leader, had to undergo training to show they can practice what they have learned, and be assessed.
