FREE parking for 30 minutes at Mansfield’s pay and display car parks is under way.

Drivers parking in the Four Seasons and Walkden Street multi-storey car parks can also park for three hours for the price of two.

Cashless parking is set to be introduced this month at the council’s 17 car parks.

Gold medal gymnast to give talk

COMMONWEALTH Games gold medal-winning gymnast Craig Heap is to give a talk to Mansfield Armchair Club, a group of businessmen who have helped local sporting talent — including swimmers Rebecca Adlington, Sam and Oliver Hynd, and golfer Oliver Wilson — for many years.

Comedian John Cooper will also entertain guests at the club’s Sporting Dinner on 12th October, at the Oakham Suite, Mansfield, from 7.45pm.

The Armchair Club works with SportsAid to support sporting talent.

Tickets, which include a dinner and the two speakers, are £35. Individual tickets or multiples and tables of eight, 10, and 12 can be catered for.

The club is hosting its Mansfield Sports Recognition Awards on 7th December, at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex, Sookholme; a Question Of Sport evening on 7th March, at the Oakham Suite; and its third Annual Golf Day, on 24th June, at Coxmoor Golf Club.

MANSFIELD District Council’s dog control service has been awarded a Gold Community Animal Welfare Footprint Award by the RSPCA for its handling of stray dogs. The award recognises the council ensures the strays are treated humanely and safely while under its care.

A FUN day at the Pop Inn, Mansfield, raised £2,400 towards a memorial for Sarah Redfern, who died after she was hit by a car last year. The event ended with the release of 150 balloons in memory of the Mansfield Woodhouse mum.

A FUNDRAISING music day at The Star, Mansfield Woodhouse, raised money for popular Mansfield busker Ray Froggatt, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Breakfast booster

OAK Tree and Asquith primary schools, Mansfield, have both received a £400 grant from cereal maker Kellogg’s after completing an innovative online breakfast club training programme that has been developed by Northumbria University.

The course provides information on the benefits of breakfast clubs and healthy eating as well as offering advice on planning, funding and marketing the club.

Clare Harding, head at Asquith, said: “It’s so encouraging to see companies like Kellogg’s supporting breakfast clubs like ours as it means we can carry on delivering the same excellent service to our children and their families. The training was useful and staff picked up some great tips.”

Group’s sporting chance

THE Mansfield Building Society’s Community Support Scheme has awarded the Rainworthbased Detached Youth Project £400 towards buying sporting equipment.

The group works with young people aged four to 19 to advance their social education by providing structured activities that would ordinarily be financially unavailable to them.

Jodie Hoggard, of Detached Youth Project, said:

“We would like to thank The Mansfield for funds to purchase outdoor equipment and games. The group is run by volunteer youth workers and meets two evenings a week, every weekend and during school holidays.”

The Mansfield’s marketing co-ordinator, Mandy Whitten, pictured with the group, said: “The structured youth work sessions improve their confidence, team work, art, health and well being through a range of sporting activities.”

Memory café is launched MANSFIELD Museum is piloting a new free monthly Memory Café for people living with dementia and their carers.

The museum has had reminiscence boxes on a range of topics available for free hire for several years.

They will be used as themes for the café, which will include activities for those who wish to join in.

A spokesman said it would also be a space to relax for those who wanted to enjoy a cup of tea in a safe social setting.

“We hope the event will add to the range of activities and services available for people living with dementia in the East Midlands,” she added.

“We have visited other memory cafés for research and advice and their coordinators are doing fantastic work to support an area that affects more and more people.

The museum thanked people who donated tea sets, plates and tablecloths.

The cafés — the first was held in September on a dressing up theme — will be supported by volunteers from the museum’s Heritage Lottery-funded volunteer programme.

His third book, Stepping Out Of Midnight, was released this summer and it promises to excite.

Stepping Out Of Midnight is an epic thriller, based across two continents and two decades. It follows the path of Abigail Fuller, who saw her vile, unlikeable parents murdered when she was 10.

Set against the backdrop of 1990s London and 19 years later on a tropical island, the thriller sees Abigail stranded after a plane crash leaves her and other survivors terrified and slowly being picked off by an unknown killer.

Are these two horrific incidents in Abigail’s life linked? Can she find the culprit before she too becomes a victim? Does anyone know the plane crash victims are there?

Thriller writing has always seemed a natural style to Lee, who loves both the genre and the ability to create tension.

“I just like writing something and seeing people’s reactions. It’s great to write a storyboard and think how you can keep people guessing,” he said.

As a child, the novelist — who attended St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School, Sutton, and then went to Tibshelf Secondary School — always favoured English and enjoyed writing fiction, but he never thought about doing it in later life.

Writing a novel was much more a spur of the moment thing or, perhaps more precisely, a product of boredom.

After leaving college aged 19, Lee spent five years living and working in the Canary Islands, France and finally Scandinavia.

Whilst working in Oslo for six months, he was deprived of both English television and

The mostly-unfurnished room contained a bookshelf with only one English book, a poorly written sci-fi novel that he was forced to read by default.

“It was terrible”, Lee remembered. “I thought I could do better than that so I just sat down and started writing.”

After returning home, he decided to carry on with the book, which in total took around a year to complete.

Trying to juggle time to write around other commitments, particularly work, was an aspect he found especially difficult.

“You can’t always schedule it. You have to be in the right frame of mind so I was writing it in bits and bobs,” said Lee. “It’s tough because I have quite a high-pres-

sure job that follows me home and I have to find the time to write around it.”

It took Lee around 14 months to finish the first draft and then a further couple of months were needed to re-draft the text.

The final book came after the ninth draft and Lee estimated it took up to 19 months to create the novel.

“You need a lot of patience and perseverance and have to have some sort of structure,” he said.

“You learn as you go. Now I wouldn’t put pen to paper without a full storyboard.”

Starting with no experience, the last 13 years have been a learning curve for the writer.

Unfortunately for Lee, like many authors his initial experience with publishing was something of a nightmare.

Going through the agent system with his second novel turned out to be a terrible experience.

The book was released before Lee thought it was ready and he was left feeling out of control of the situation.

“It was horrendous. I do feel for authors,” he admitted.

“I recommend that you avoid the agency process. It’s painful and disheartening.”

Thankfully the publication of his latest novel with Lioness Publishing went far more smoothly and he was happy with the outcome.

After working hard to reach a recent deadline, Lee has decided to take a well-earned break before continuing with his sequel to Stepping Out Of Midnight.  STEPPING Out Of Midnight retails at Lioness Publishing and Amazon for £9.98 for the paperback and £6.99 for the ebook version.

Walker’s world record hope MANSFIELD pensioner Anthony Allsop believes he may have set a world record for becoming the oldest man to walk solo between Land’s End and John O’Groats — the length of the UK mainland.

Anthony (75), completed the walk, covering more than 900 miles, at the beginning of September after setting off on 9th July.

He did most of the trek alone — apart from his teddy bear mascot, Darwin — and without back-up, taking in some of Offa’s Dyke, many miles of used and disused canal systems, disused railways, The West Highland Way and The Great Glen Way. Anthony, of Little Barn Lane, walked for eight to nine hours each day and then used public transport to return to his vehicle, parking overnight wherever he could — including in many pubs and Tesco car parks.

He bought the Seat Alhambra for the trek and converted it into what he dubbed a SMB — a small mobile bedroom. He had to rebuild his bed in the back of the SMB after it collapsed.

Along the way the determined pensioner received welcome, random acts of kindness from people he met.

One family gave him a bed for the night, another invited him for an evening meal and another washed his clothes.

Anthony said: “After completing the walk I felt a mixture of elation, relief, anti-climax and utter fatigue.

“On that last day’s walk, of about only 16 miles, I was faced with gale-force winds into my face, driving rain and it was very cold.

“I arrived in John O’Groats like a drowned rat. I had fully expected the John O’Groats Hotel to still be operational, as it had been in 1993, but it wasn’t.

“I took a few photographs, had someone take a few shots of me at the signpost, called in at a café for a pot of tea and cottage pie and then caught the bus back to Tesco in Wick, where I had set out from just a few hours earlier.

Earlier in the summer he had to abandon his hopes of beating 74-year-old Reg Savill’s 13-year-old record through ill health.

Anthony is now putting his evidence — GPS tracking, CCTV and receipts — together to submit to the Guinness Book of World Records.

He said: “In the summer of 1993, I completed a back-packing walk (mostly by road because I only had pages torn from an old AA Motorists Handbook of the UK) from Thurso, at the very north of Britain, through John O’ Groats and down through Scotland, England and Wales to Land’s End. “This time I kept to public footpaths and minor country roads as much as possible.

“I tracked my walk with my own devices and kept a day-to-day record of where I stopped en route, signed by representatives of those places.”

Plea for literacy volunteers in primary schools THREE training sessions are being held this month for people interested in becoming literacy volunteers in primary schools.

The charity Literacy Volunteers, which has helped children since 1996, says it needs more volunteers to work with pupils on a oneto-one basis.

The charity encourages children, who are finding it difficult to read, to develop an interest and love for books.

Volunteers do not teach reading, but talk, read and play games with children to give them confidence — and help them enjoy reading and communicating.

Volunteers go to the same local primary school for one session per week, helping around four or five youngsters.

A spokesman said: “Volunteers do not need formal qualifications and training and ongoing support is provided.”

The training sessions — for people from Mansfield and Ashfield — will be held at the Quaker Friends Meeting House, Mansfield, on Thursdays 8th, 15th and 22nd October, from 10am to 1pm.

A MANSFIELD Woodhouse family and friends have raised £3,000 for Funding Neuro’s £900,000 appeal to back research into treatments and cures for neurological conditions.

Brian Hall, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 20 years ago, led the team on the eight-mile stretch of the famous Alpe d’Huez stage of the Tour De France.

The cyclists also included his daughter, Jo, his son, Kevin, his wife, Amy, James Wilson, James Drennon, Paul Hoskyns, Richard Antcliffe, Daryl Fletcher and Elliott Hind.

The course, which rises 2,000ft, includes 21 hairpin bends.

SHERWOOD Forest Hospitals Trust is celebrating a successful ongoing recruitment drive after offering 64 highly-skilled nurses (above) posts for next year.

Recruited from the Philippines, the new staff will arrive in groups of 20 in March, April and May.

Kate Lorenti, deputy director of human resources at the trust, said: “This has been a success. We were impressed by the high quality of the caring nurses we interviewed in Manila and to offer roles to 64 qualified nurses is fantastic news.”

The recruitment drive is

continuing in the UK and overseas.

In April, the trust recruited more than 20 recently-qualified UK nurses and they started work at the trust’s hospitals — including King’s Mill and Mansfield Community — at the end of last month.

New visitor centre moves step closer

A CONSORTIUM led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has been named as the preferred bidder to design, build and operate a new visitor centre — and to manage the natural habitats — at Sherwood Forest Country Park.

The RSPB came top in a procurement process organised by Nottinghamshire County Council for the £5.3m plans at the country park, which forms part of Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Edwinstowe.

The consortium also includes The Sherwood Forest Trust, Continuum Attractions and Thoresby Estate.

The visitor centre will provide a new facility for the 350,000 visitors who go to the country park, based on the Robin Hood theme and including the Major Oak, every year.

It is hoped final contracts will be signed this autumn. The council will remain responsible for the current visitor facilities until the new centre open.

Council leader Coun Alan Rhodes described the news as “a bright new chapter for Sherwood Forest and the legend of Robin Hood.”

“This new modern visitor centre will enable people to continue to marvel at and enjoy this specially-protected site in a more sustainable way.”

Nick Brown, regional agent for Thoresby Estate, said: “As a major local landowner, including several leisure and tourism interests, the estate is keen to see a first-class facility built within Sherwood Forest. The estate also has strong conservation and heritage ethos.”

Facebook page reunites lost pets with owners MANSFIELD District Council is taking the lead in its efforts to reunite lost dogs with their owners with the launch of a successful Facebook campaign.

The council’s Facebook gallery, which publishes photographs of missing and abandoned dogs, is getting the thumbs-up from Mansfield dog lovers, who have responded in their thousands to the campaign, sharing information and offering advice.

One post received 90,000 views, while there were more than 1,000 shares for a post about a stray Vizsla.

The council is asking people to contact the Dog Control Service directly if their pet goes missing. The service, which operates 24/7, is a good starting point for worried dog owners and may eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress for both owners and dogs.

In August, 29 lost dogs were reunited with their owners.

When a dog is picked up by the service, it is checked to see if it has any form of identification, such as a collar, tag or microchip.

If not, the dog is taken to kennels, where it remains for seven days before being transferred to a rescue centre, which will attempt to rehome the animal.

Dealing with abandoned or lost dogs cost the council £77,740 last year, which is why the council said responsible dog ownership was a big priority in an attempt to Email news items to news@news-journal.co.uk

Harvest appeal for homeless

HOMELESSNESS charity Framework is calling on community groups to collect essential household items in support of its harvest campaign, The Feeding Futures Appeal.

The appeal hopes to partner homelessness services in more than 60 locations with community groups, who will help to collect items including non-perishable foodstuffs, cleaning products, toiletries and household items for people in need.

Collected items will be made into food parcels for people in crisis and food will also be used in cookery sessions at Framework accommodation services — giving homeless people some of the skills that support a successful tenancy and healthier lifestyle.

Framework’s Mel Little, who manages the Mansfield homelessness prevention team, which sees dozens of people a week facing housing crises, said: “We are seeing more people who are struggling to pay for essential items like food; people who never thought they would find themselves in that situation.

“For the first time we have started to store food at our service.

“I’ve never witnessed such widespread need before.”

MANSFIELD-BASED interior fit-out specialists Jephsons Shopfitters has increased the number of staff at its headquarters because of demand.

In the past 18 months Jephsons has recruited more than 20 new members to its fitting and manufacturing teams, bringing the total workforce to over 60.

As well as creating new jobs, Jephsons has had to increased the size of its fleet with the addition of new vehicles and are now servicing high street food, retail and hospitality brands.

EDWINSTOWE-BASED construction company Woodhead is set to begin work on a brand new £4.7m business innovation hub on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus.

The Technology Entrepreneurship Centre will be the latest addition to the University of Nottingham Innovation Park, and forms the basis of the university’s successful application to be one of the first University Enterprise Zones in the country.

Following on from previous successful projects completed for the university and a number of other educational establishments across the East Midlands, Woodhead was selected to deliver the 11-month scheme.

Designed to reflect the industrial heritage of the innovation park, the building’s architecture honours the Raleigh cycles factory, which started manufacturing bikes in the area of Nottingham during the late Victorian era. The factory dominated the site throughout the 20th Century, employing more than 8,000 people at its height.

New chief for regional Chamber SCOTT Knowles has been appointed the new chief executive of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire).

He had been the acting chief executive since his predecessor, George Cowcher, stood down in July.

Scott joined the Chamber in 1999. Over the past 16 years, he has managed multiple initia-

THE former Crompton View Primary School in Bilsthorpe has been relaunched as Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy.

It is part of The Flying High Trust, based at Cotgrave Candleby Lane School, a multi-academy trust with access to more than 40 schools within its Teaching School Alliance.

The academy was launched at a family day.

It included the release of balloons and giving each pupil a book bag and school jumper or cardigan with the school logo on, designed by seven-year-old pupil Tia Williams (age 7).

The school also has a new head, Lisa Turland, who said: “The family day was a perfect way to launch our hopes and aspirations for every pupil that attends this wonderful school.

“We thank everyone who attended and Oakwood Fuels for donating balloons for the children to launch. It was a symbolic event as we want our pupils’ aspirations to fly as high as possible, just like the balloons.”

YEAR six students from King Edward Primary School, Mansfield, took part in an interactive two-day Little Genius Project at The Brunts Academy, funded

by Nottinghamshire County Council.

It was presented with the help of employers Lindhurst Innovation Engineering, Asmech Systems Ltd, Jephsons Shopfitters UK, Avonside, Lukas at Work, and Food Science Fusion.

Students went through a carousel of employer-led interactive workshops to find out more about their products and the type of jobs needed in the workplace.

Shane Gunstone, managing director for Asmech Systems, said: “Employers in the engineering and manufacturing sector believe it is important to influence children in primary schools to consider the career opportunities that are relevant to economic growth.”

The construction project was part of a community team challenge for employees.

IT students Andy Gardner (18), and Kalum Pepperday (17), and construction students Stuart Peach (36), and Stefan Hubble (25), will go up against fellow competitors in the finals of the WorldSkills UK Skills Competitions at Birmingham’s NEC in November.

It comes after Andy and Kalum triumphed in the IT Support Technician and Network System Administrator categories of the WorldSkills regional heats, while Stuart and Stefan topped their plastering and painting and decorating categories respectively at the Midlands’ heats of SkillBuild.

Finalists aim to become UK champion in their chosen skill with the chance to be selected to train with ‘Squad UK’ for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.

£6.5m centre is coming AN ambitious scheme for a £6.5m stateof-the-art university centre in Mansfield is set to get under way.

Construction of the purpose-built facility at the college’s Derby Road campus can now begin, after the project received a £2.6m grant from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

The three-storey Vision University Centre will boast inspirational teaching and learning space, IT suites, 100-seat lecture theatre and science laboratory.

Opening in autumn 2016, it will accommodate students doing higher education qualifications including

HNCs, HNDs, foundation degrees and full-honours degrees, along with advanced apprentices and those studying part-time professional qualifications.

Complementary works include a multiuse outdoor games area and additional car parking.

Dame Asha Khemka, principal and chief executive, said: “Not only will this raise the already high standards of our university-level provision, it will also bring new opportunities to people who may have never considered studying at a higher level before.”

A VISION West Nottinghamshire College photography tutor has seen his work go on display at a prestigious exhibition.

Richard Edwards, who teaches on a range of digital photography courses in the community, was delighted when one of his digital snaps was selected for a recent exhibition at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

His black and white image of a woman jogging alongside Birmingham’s canal basin early one morning was shown under the ‘urban living’ theme. Richard said: “I was absolutely wowed when I discovered I’d been chosen.”

The Our Voice community choir will benefit from a donation of £720 from the Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards.

Disability Nottinghamshire (formerly DIAL Mansfield and District) provides free, confidential and impartial information, advice and advocacy to people with disabilities and impairments, their carers, friends and families as well as professionals and students.

FORMER Warsop bell-ringer Fred Flint, who died last year, aged 93, after ringing at the parish church for more than 75 years, left a legacy in his will to have the church clock automated.

The original Whitehurst clock is housed in a dust-proof cabinet and has been keeping time over Warsop for 170 years.

However, the clock had to be wound by hand, which involved climbing a ladder from the ringing chamber into the clock chamber.

It was an arduous task, even for the fittest person, and involved moving heavy weights that keep the clock going.

Fred did the job well into his late 80s and he did not take kindly to anyone reminding him

that someone of his age should not be climbing ladders.

Fred knew that technology existed for clocks to be wound up automatically and a number of towers have this facility.

Money that Fred bequeathed has paid for the installation of an automated winding mechanism at Warsop. The work has been carried out

by Time Assured, of Mansfield.

The installation of this updated technology has been achieved through a sensitive recognition that the original manual winding mechanism must be preserved so that if, in the future, it is decided to revert to manual winding, that could be achieved.

The upgrading work will be dedicated by the Rector of Warsop Parish Church and Area Dean of Mansfield, the Rev Angela Fletcher, at a date to be decided.

Guides’ new county president RAVENSHEAD woman Eve Griffith has been appointed county president of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire.

She succeeds Anne Allery, who retired after seven years.

Eve joined Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in 1985 as an adult helper at her daughter’s unit, 1st Larch Farm Guides.

She qualified as a Guide leader in 1987 and has been district

commissioner for both Ravenshead and Newstead divisions as well as assistant county commissioner.

For the past 10 years, Eve has volunteered in the Guides shop at county headquarters in Carlton. She was the DBS verifier for the county and also registrations secretary.

“I feel honoured to have been invited to become president, but am daunted when I think of the fantastic job done by my predecessors,” Eve said.

STANTON Hill businessman John Bowden, The Garden Barber, has been thanked for helping to create thousands of smiles at the Idlewells shopping centre, Sutton, after building and donating a holiday beach pit.

It comprised a large sand pit and an artificial-turf area on a raised set for visitors to enjoy. The area was a huge hit with children and their parents.

Idlewells manager Chloe O’Donnell, pictured with Mr Bowden, said: “We are grateful to John. He came in and measured up, built the beach pit area to order and wouldn’t take a penny for doing it.

“Families loved spending time at our little bit of seaside in Sutton.”

The beach pit was part of the Idlewells’ Sun and Games six-week holiday promotion, featuring free donkey rides, hook-a-duck, a giant deckchair, workshops, candy floss and things associated with the British seaside.

Museum boom

MANSFIELD Museum is celebrating a successful summer season with visitor figures rising by almost 40% compared to last year.

During the six weeks of the school summer holiday the museum welcomed more than 8,500 people.

The summer exhibition’s topic was Miniature Worlds, featuring everything from Lego to live mice. Popular events included a teddy bears’ picnic, a Lego day and a visit by children’s favourite Peppa Pig.

Council helps to reduce loneliness

NEW research has revealed that extra care housing schemes, such as the developments being planned by Nottinghamshire County Council for each district in the county, greatly reduce loneliness amongst older residents.

Findings from the International Longevity Centre found that 12.17% of people living in extra care housing experience loneliness compared to 22.83% living in the wider community, with more than four out of five extra care residents saying they never or hardly ever felt lonely.

There are nine existing extra care schemes in Nottinghamshire and the council is investing £12.65m to support the creation of more.

It funded nine extra care bungalows in Bilsthorpe, which were finished earlier this year.

Mansfield’s Poppy Fields scheme on the former Brownlow Road site is under way and the council is working with Mansfield District Council to create 48 extra care homes within a wider development that is expected to be completed early next year.

Plans are also being developed for an extra care schemes at Ollerton.

Coun Muriel Weisz, chairman of the county council’s adult social care and health committee, said: “Extra care provides the best of both worlds as the schemes offer communal areas and plenty of activities for residents, whilst each apartment boasts plenty of private space.

“This new research supports our plans to create more extra care schemes across the county as they have a positive impact on loneliness and isolation, while giving older people a real alternative to traditional residential care.”

Flying the flag

THE Red Ensign flew over County Hall for the first time as Nottinghamshire County Council marked Merchant Navy Day. It was raised by Ravenshead’s Tom Mason, who served in the Merchant Navy from 1956 until the 1970s and is a past president of the Conway Club, a group of former merchant navy seamen who trained on cadet ship HMS Conway.

After raising the flag at County Hall, Tom travelled to London to attend the national event at Tower Hill memorial. � MANSFIELD District Council marked the day by flying the Red Ensign at the Civic Centre. The Vicar of St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Mansfield, the Rev David Fudger, led a short service before deputy mayor Coun Mick Barton raised the flag.

Bidding to help more businesses

THE popularity of the Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID) has prompted the creation of a scheme for friends of the organisation — and Mansfield Manor Hotel has become the first to sign up.

Mansfield BID was this year voted back in for a further five-year term to help businesses within a defined town centre area.

Based on their rateable value, organisations pay a levy that is used to help drive footfall into the town centre and create schemes that assist businesses.

Because of statutory rules, organisations outside the BID area are not able to become levy payers, but a number have asked to be part of the scheme.

The BID board has now approved a Friends of the BID scheme, where companies within a set boundary can voluntarily pay one per cent of their rateable value to enjoy some of the benefits available to BID levy payers.

said: “The success of the BID speaks for itself, with footfall rising, fantastic events and businesses benefiting from schemes such as cardboard recycling and PAT testing.”

Mansfield mayor and BID director Kate Allsop said: “The Friends scheme is good news for traders and customers alike. Customers will have more incentives to spend in the local economy using the I Love Mansfield card, and businesses will benefit from cross promotion.”

Warsop gets switched on MORE than 50,000 homes and businesses in Nottinghamshire now have access to fast, fibre broadband, thanks to the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire (BBfN) programme The scheme is on course to ensure 95 per cent of the county has access to fibre broadband by April next year — 12 months ahead of the national target.

In Warsop, the county’s first ‘all-in-one’ fibre broadband cabinet has gone live, providing access to download speeds of up to 80mbps to 138 homes and businesses in the area.

The ‘Warsop onesie’, situated on the corner of Hetts Lane and Church Street, combines the existing copper service with the new fibre technology into one cabinet. Although not suitable for all locations, a ‘onesie’ helps reduce the number of street cabinets and is less expensive to maintain, allowing savings to be reinvested in providing broadband to more communities across the county.

Local Government CHILDREN can enjoy top-quality play facilities at the award-winning George V Park on Black Scotch Lane, Mansfield, thanks to a £60,000 investment by Mansfield District Council.

The play area has been fitted with new equipment designed for youngsters aged from two through to young teenagers.

There are state-of-the-art swings, springers, rockers and a large multi-activity unit, containing a slide, roundabout, educational panels and talking tubes.

There is also a colourful play surface containing a snakes and ladder game, while in the surrounding wooded area children can play on balancing mushrooms.

New litter bins have also been installed and families can use benches and picnic tables.

The equipment is part of a £202,250 improvement package for parks delivered by the council, using contributions from developers of new residential developments close to the parks and open spaces.

Other projects include a £90,000 outdoor play area on Kings Walk open space off Berry Hill Lane, and the installation of £52,250-worth of outdoor gym equipment at Kings Walk and Racecourse Park.

Festivals a huge success MANSFIELD District Council’s three summer festivals managed to avoid the worst of the poor summer weather and were hailed a success, attracting around 2,000 people.

The weather just held out for the final festival at Carr Lane Park, Warsop, where around 500 people joined in the family attractions.

The first of the festivals was held at King George V Park, Mansfield.

The biggest crowd was at the second festival, in Titchfield Park, Mansfield, where almost 1,000 took part.

The free events had entertainment for all the family.

Visitors were able to enjoy birds of prey flying demonstrations, sports activities, circus skills workshops, and mini dog shows.

There was an opportunity to take part in arts and crafts, face painting and to meet snakes, scorpions and cockroaches at a Meet The Beast stall.

At King George V Park, there was a chance to have a go at archery and at the Warsop festival there was a BMX bike taster session.

At the Titchfield Park festival, run in conjunction with Mansfield Museum’s Mining Gala, there were pit pony rides and a duck race.

Making a stand on homophobia MANSFIELD District Council appealed for what it believes is the silent majority to show support for the gay community after a transsexual in the town complained about the abuse she says she has suffered at the hands of the town’s homophobic element.

The council called for the town’s residents to support the rights of the LGBT community when it went into the Market Place to encourage people to sign the Stonewall charity’s No Bystanders pledge to speak out and act if they see or hear homophobic abuse.

Mansfield mayor Kate Allsop said: “We are sure Mansfield is essentially a friendly place and there is a silent majority out there who would never condone what (the victim) has suffered.”

The council re-endorsed and updated its policy on reporting hate crime in a delegated decision by portfolio holder for public protection Coun Mick Barton.

HOUSEHOLDS in Mansfield district have received a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct.

The aim is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify residents who are not registered so they can be encouraged to do so.

With Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place across Nottinghamshire in May, it is an opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.

Julie Jevons, electoral services manager, said: “Anyone who wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, simply check the form and return it as quickly as possible.

“If you are not currently registered, we will send information explaining how to do this or you can go online to apply to register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote” The council said it was particularly important that anyone who has moved recently checked whether they were registered.

RETRO is the theme of Kelham Hall’s Big Vintage Festival on 17th October.

There will be the chance to learn old dances, visit craft-inspired workshops, and buy and view home decoration ideas from the 1940s, 50s and 60s as well as vintage clothes from the 50s through to the 80s.

A NEW guide showcasing some of the best historical spots across Mansfield’s town centre has been launched.

The Mansfield Heritage Trail leaflet has been redesigned to guide visitors around some of the most interesting buildings and monuments across the town.

The free leaflet is available from Mansfield Museum, which is a good starting point for the self-guided tour. The Heritage Trail is

also available to download at www.mansfield. gov.uk/heritage trail The trail has been divided into sections so that visitors can decide what they would like to see and how far they want to walk.

They can follow the guide and look out for bronze plaques set into the ground around the tour. A free version designed for children is also available so families can follow the trail together.

21 years of adrenalin-filled fun A BUSINESS offering outdoor activities in the heart of Sherwood Forest is celebrating 21 successful years.

The Adrenalin Jungle, founded

by Nottinghamshire entrepreneur Don Logan, a paintball enthusiast with an entrepreneurial spirit, now offers the likes of laser tag and blindfold driving among 20 activities across a 150-acre site.

It attracts around 8,000 visitors to the county each year.

came to set up on my own site I knew it was the career for me.

“We were successful from the outset and knew there was a high demand for this kind of activity.

“After a few years of trading demand for other events was increasing so we started to bring in external providers for activities such as quad biking and archery but quickly realised if we wanted

to control the quality of products we had to bring the events in-house.

“We now provide 95% of our activities ourselves having made significant investment in equipment and can cater for up to 300 people each day with more than 20 activities on offer.”

Mr Logan has worked closely with the Forestry Commission and the site was the first to be leased from the land managers.

By demonstrating his commitment to the conservation of the forest, he has secured the future of the site that was initially earmarked for deforestation in 2020.

Georgie on the road

MANSFIELD-BORN singer-songwriter Georgie is to play three local dates on her Following The 20-Mile Road Tour.

The tour follows Georgie’s route from her hometown to Nottingham, where she got her big break — a journey she made often as a new musician and immortalised in her track 20-Mile Road.

Georgie made several festival appearances this year, including Splendour and Y Not Festival, and signed a record deal with Columbia Records.

Starting out at 14, she quickly gained a solid reputation for stunning live performances, drawing comparisons with Fleetwood Mac and Patti Smith.

Since then she has become a stalwart of the Nottingham music scene — championed BBC Introducing, Left Lion and NUSIC. Georgie said: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to play these shows. That route is so symbolic for me as it represents a journey I made hundreds of times and wrote a song about, so it’s exciting to make an event out of it.”

The dates are: 9th October – Create Theatre, Mansfield; 6th November – Village Hall, Ravenshead; and 10th December – The Maze, Nottingham.

� TWO Mansfield businessmen — HallFast Industrial Supplies owner Malk Hall and A Star Media director John Starkie — completed a 310-mile, 24-hour charity bike ride in aid of three charities.

They were raising money for Headway Nottingham, Headway UK – the brain injury association and Mansfield’s Fountaindale SEN School, which helps youngsters, aged three to 19, with physical and sensory needs.

The duo set off from Newcastle and arrived in London 23 hours and 30 minutes later, after overcoming strong headwinds and 7,500ft of climbing along the way.

Over the previous six months they undertook intensive training under the guidance of former world and Olympic cycling medalist Bryan Steel.

Mr Hall said: “It was the hardest thing I have done. We are proud to have completed this challenge, almost 400 top cyclists took part in and John and I finished together in 126th and 127th.

“We would have finished in the top 90 or so if we hadn’t lost about an hour when my bike chain broke.”

Hall-Fast began fundraising for the school almost three years ago and hopes to have raised more than £60,000 by the end of the year.

Open Door 1, based at Harwood Court Community Centre, Sutton, on Tuesdays and Fridays, received a cheque for £543.36 from the Newstead-based Holistic Health Team following its Nordic Walking fundraiser earlier this year.

Maxine Huskinson, service manager of Open Door 1, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Holistic Health Team.

“The money has been spent on new activities for group members.”

The group provides a full day of activities and a freshly-cooked two-course meal, plus refreshments, for a charge.

Maxine added: “We rely on fundraising for all the extra things we need for the group.

“We are competitively priced against other providers because of the efforts of our supporters, such as Pip and the Holistic Health Team and her family.”

Maxine explained why the group started.

“We felt that the beginning of the journey for anyone being diagnosed had less support, so decided to focus on people in the early stages of the disease,” she said.

“We also wanted to carry on the muchneeded support for the sufferer and their families too.

“When a diagnosis of dementia is made, at whatever age, the options available to the sufferer and their families are limited.

“We used our resources and started a pilot for a few weeks to see if there was a need.

Within no time we were full and so carried on and went from strength to strength to get to where we are now.

Dedicated care for frail people THE trust that runs King’s Mill and Mansfield Community hospitals has expanded its team caring for frail, elderly patients.

The news comes as reports reveal people in the UK are living longer, but many with long-term medical conditions and frailty.

The Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust has strengthened its Frailty Intervention Team — professionals dedicated to providing high-quality care to frail people.

The trust said frailty affected nearly 50% of the over-85s and 15% of the over-65s.

MORE than 40 young people gave their views on health services across Nottinghamshire at an event at MyPlace, Westfield Folkhouse, Mansfield.

The event, organised by the Nottinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board, also discussed how services could be improved to make them more young person friendly.

The event reported on the views of more than 1,000 young people, who filled in a health survey to show what services were important to them and what topics were most frequently discussed.

Coun Joyce Bosnjak, chairman of the Nottinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “Young people should have a loud voice in shaping health services and we want to empower them to be confident users and consumers of all aspects of our health services.”

Among the recommendations in the Young People’s Health Strategy will be an online information source on a range of health and wellbeing issues that directs young people to the most appropriate support service.

This will cover prominent issues at a national level as well as set out what is available locally.

Patients praise hospitals Breastfeeding THE trust that runs King’s Mill and Mansfield Community hospitals has been praised by patients Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was rated for the quality of its patient environments.

Results from the Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre showed the trust scored 99.87% for cleanliness; 94.47% for nutrition and hydration; 89.36% for privacy, dignity and wellbeing; and 94.36% for condition, appearance and maintenance.

In the new dementia-friendly assessment the trust scored 71.77%.

“These results are testament to the hard work and dedication of staff. From doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff, everyone works with one goal in mind – the delivery of exceptional care,” she said.

“Finding out what patients have experienced in our hospitals, and if they are satisfied with the care provided, helps us learn and grow to ensure we continue to provide the highest level of care and service.”

A NEW initiative supported by Nottinghamshire County Council and health partners that gives help and advice to new breastfeeding mums has been rated a success.

The two-year pilot scheme, which covers Ashfield and Mansfield, has introduced infant-feeding peer support workers to provide support to new mums, outside of what midwives and health visitors already offer.

County Health Partnerships has been awarded the Baby Friendly Award and won international recognition from Unicef.

ďż˝ THE Pinxton-based Chernobyl Children Life Line’s Richard Street and Mariya Bylina, an English teacher in Belarus, gave a presentation to the Rotary Club of West AshďŹ eld.

Mr Street, the main organiser, said: “Much of the credit for this has to go to the wonderful families who host these children and the wonderful people and organisations who help fund the travel costs of the children. “The Rotary Club has have given lifechanging opportunities to many children in that time, something we are most grateful for.�

The group brings children to the UK who are suffering from the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Nine boys and nine girls, along with their group leader, came on a convalescing break from their homes in Belarus.

Mr Street said bringing the children to the UK for a month boosted their immune system. ďż˝ BROOKSIDE (Mansfield) WI celebrated its 30-year anniversary at a supper with guests from other groups.

The Portland Street project provides accommodation and support to adults with mild learning disabilities, and is run by Metropolitan — one of the UK’s leading providers of affordable housing and care and support services.

Eleven residents live in their own self-contained flats and receive support to develop a range of life skills.

Built with nearly ÂŁ10,000 of Big Lottery funding, the new area will act as a communal space, hosting workshops and therapeutic drop-in sessions. A portion of the money awarded was also spent on computer equipment for the room.

The club is a group of businesses that meet bi-monthly at a local restaurant to network and share stories.

Largest maker of wooden carousels VISITORS to Cincinnati can now see the amazing woodcraft artistry of some talented Mansfielders.

Carol Ann’s Carousel in the Smale Rivefront Park is a huge, 6,300sq ft glassenclosed attraction just west of the Roebling Suspension Bridge.

It has 42 animals and two chariots with each telling a story about Cincinnati.

Carousel Works in Mansfield, Ohio, USA, the world’s largest maker of wooden carousels, including the one in Richland Carousel Park, created several unique animals, such as a pig and a passenger pigeon, for the project.

The pig honours Findlay Market — the only surviving Cincinnati municipal market house from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Its Over-the-Rhine location made Findlay Market, with its produce and butcher stalls, well-situated for people moving out of the river basin during the mid-19th Century.

“We’ve been having an exciting time work-

ing with this,” said Marilyn Ritchie, of Carousel Works. “All of the horses are themed to unique things for the city of Cincinnati.”

Among the decorations on the animals are images of Cincinnati’s famous Union Terminal, windows in Music Hall and even a baseball and bat.

“Our special niche is to be able to build your carousel,” Marilyn said. “It’s what represents your life, your world and your city. It makes it fun for us that we know it’s going to find a home that’s really its home.

“People will be able to walk in and recognise a lot of the detailing for things in their community.”

The team in Mansfield enjoys making people happy with their work, said Kate Blakley, of Carousel Works.

“What we do brings happiness to people of all ages,” Kate said. “A carousel is one of the only things you can do anymore that a two-year-old and 82-year-old can get equal enjoyment out of.”

THE Four Seasons Shopping Centre in Mansfield has been recognised for its environmental initiatives.

The centre has won the Environmental Best Practice award at the International Green Apple Awards.

It will receive a trophy at a presentation ceremony at the Houses of Parliament, London, in November.

Its entry focused on recycling initiatives, practices and procedures. General waste has been reduced by 26.8% thanks to the success of an on-site recycling programme and annual gas consumption has decreased by nearly 40% since 2009.

The centre hosted environmental workshops for more than 11,000 children and annual electrical consumption has decreased by nearly 34% over the past six years.

Praise for diabetes care A HALIFAX bomber.

Hunt for war hero’s relatives THE Ministry of Defence is trying to trace the Mansfield-area relatives of an RAF airman killed when his aircraft crashed in the Netherlands during the second world war.

Sergeant Gerard Stanley Walters, who was 20 at the time of his death, was born in Stratford, East London, to Albert Sidney and Jane Walters in June 1922 and joined the RAF in November 1940.

On 3rd April, 1943 he was one of seven crew on board an RAF Halifax bomber aircraft, registration DT795, which took off from RAF Lissett, Bridlington.

His aircraft was one of a fleet of 348 airplanes taking part in nightly raids on the Krupps factories in Essen, Germany.

On the home leg, DT795 crashed in the Apeldoorns Canal in Wapenweld, Gelderland, 10km from Zwolle in the Netherlands.

All of the crew died but only three bodies were recovered. The remaining four, including Sgt Walters, were not found.

Human remains and aircraft debris were discovered in September 2014 when the Dutch authorities excavated the crash site.

The MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), part of Defence Business Service, has launched an appeal to try to trace relatives of Sgt Walters.

Louise Dorr, of the JCCC, said: “We know from our records that before joining the RAF Gerard was employed as a dairy hand and that his last known address was in Stratford, East London.

“We also think he may have had a brother called Albert Reginald Walters, who lived in the Mansfield area. We believe Albert’s children and grandchildren lived in Mansfield at some point or possibly in the Droitwich/Kidderminster/Stourport area of Worcestershire.

“Unfortunately that’s all we’ve been able to find out about his family and where the trail goes cold. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to trace any family members.

“We would like to track down any of Gerard’s relatives with a view to inviting them to a burial service during 2016, so any help that anyone can give us would be appreciated.”

THE first skate park in Rainworth has opened after a three-year appeal.

The Rainworth Skatepark Association is now raising money for CCTV at the park.

Developers of three housing schemes in the village have contributed a total of £130,000, while £50,000 was awarded from Nottinghamshire County Council’s local communities

fund. WREN, a not-for-profit organisation that awards grants from landfill tax, also contributed £50,000 to the project.

Rainworth Parish Council will maintain the park, Newark and Sherwood District Council has also helped the scheme and Rainworth Welfare has leased the land for a peppercorn rent.

Village gets first skate park

THE quality of care for children and young people with diabetes provided at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust is at an all-time high, according to the results of an audit published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

The trust’s results were rated well above the national average in the National Diabetes Paediatric Audit.

Diabetes specialist nurse Helen Marsh said: “The trust’s results are a third higher than the national average.”

The trust also completed almost one quarter more care processes than the national average.

A SCHEME that helps people to develop projects to boost their communities is on course to complete 25 initiatives this financial year — an increase of 12.

Launched in 2013, the Supporting Local Communities (SLC) fund replaced the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) at Nottinghamshire County Council.

It helps residents deliver projects that offer environmental, economic and community benefits to their local areas.

The SLC fund has £500,000 at its disposal and supports a range of community-based schemes, from improving play parks to new allotment sites or a bandstand refurbishment.

Successful applicants could receive as much as £50,000.

Schemes already being helped this year include improvements to the coal garden at Teversal Trail Visitor Centre.

Skaters put through their paces at camps LAMMAS Ice Skating Club, Sutton, held two skate camps for members, who enjoyed an actionpacked, fun-filled day of off-ice exercise classes and on-ice sessions working on jumps and spins.

The caring side of a tough sport THE sport of rugby league has shown its caring side for a Sherwood Wolf Hunt player who suffered a serious injury early in the season that has just finished on a high note for the club.

Second place for walking wonders

THERE was more success for Mansfield Senior Reds walking football team when they came second in the regional finals of a tournament at Stamford FC. Mansfield were representing Nottinghamshire after winning the county finals earlier this year.

Leicestershire progressed to the national final. Other counties taking part were Northamptonshire, West Midlands and Lincolnshire.

Mansfield drew 0-0 with Netherton, the Northamptonshire champions, lost 2-0 to Leicester and beat West Midlands champions Hartshill Strollers 4-1.

Shaun Hird hit a hat-trick and Dave Dean also netted. The Lincolnshire side withdrew.

Watch prize for golfer

A SUTTON golfer won a limited-edition BOSS watch for achieving a hole-in-one.

Paul Marsh (57), scored his ace on the 182-yard, par-three third at Tapton Park. The nine-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a commemorative timepiece.

The luxury German brand is rewarding golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one during a club competition in 2015.

The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo — a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers.

Francis Appleton suffered a fractured neck against Telford in a Midlands Merit Division game.

He required five hours of surgery at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, as material was taken from his hip to fix a torn vertebrae.

His injuries meant he would not be able to work as a plasterer for many months.

The long-term prognosis for Appleton is good, but his recovery is expected to take years.

Immediately after the injury Wolf Hunt held a fundraising game against a mix of Mansfield Woodhouse, Woodhouse Giants and other local team rugby team players at their base at Debdale Sport and Recreation Club.

After the game there was a charity comedy evening with a sports raffle and auction.

Money raised went to to the Francis Appleton Rehabilitation Fund, set up by RLCares, the Rugby League benevolent fund.

The rehabilitation fund will support the player and any excess money will help players injured in the future.

A further fundraising event was held at the ground following the last league game of the season against Boston Buchaneers — a victory that catapulted Wolf Hunt into the play-offs.

MANSFIELD Town Football Club has sent dozens of football shirts and training wear to children in Sierra Leone via 167 Catering Support Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps.

Schools re-opened across the West African country earlier this year after they were closed because of the Ebola outbreak.

The club teamed up with the regiment after a link-up by the club’s operations director, Tina Broughton, and Stags’ supporter Corporal Bryn Evans.

Around 60 items of clothing have been donated, including shirts, training tops, socks and shorts.
