So many times, new clients have described to me large windows, which are desirable because of the views, but they are south-facing.“It’s too much light, too hot, I have to close the curtains and this defeats the purpose of such a window,” they tell me. It is important in Vedic architecture that, as humans we stay connected with Earth since we are an inherent part of the Earth. We are born of the Earth and affected by the energy field of the Earth. We need outdoor connection so that we are in sync with our planet and this is what these clients really need. And so, in nearly every project, we bring nature visually inside the building in a way that our clients can fully experience it. We work in tandem with natural phenomena in designing a space. For example, the direction North in the northern hemisphere never ever receives direct sunlight. We open this North part of the building to the outdoors using huge amounts of glass. If we were building in India, we would open to the outdoors with a large courtyard. But in North America, we put a glass instead, for lots of daylight and beautiful views. For winter we use triple pane glass or close the curtains. Another way to establish indoor-outdoor connection is with a central courtyard inside a building. The client may want to plant small trees native to the area as well as other vegetation. We make a C-shape building facing north with large windows on north. The building itself may be two or three levels, with all levels facing the central courtyard. We design balconies on the 2nd and 3rd levels and the courtyard has a large skylight bringing in great ambient light into the central open courtyard. When it comes to Vedic architecture and outdoor connection, I practice what I teach. In my house, my kitchen countertop and the stove faces exact East and on either side are two large windows. The Sun is wonderful first thing in the morning and the light is absolutely gorgeous and so refreshing.
