Norway is an environmentally conscious country. Inspired by the high road they are taking, I was eager to experience their sustainable approaches to daily living. And I was not disappointed. Walking down the streets of Oslo, I noticed the electrical charging stations for cars. Norwegians recycle household waste, they invest in solar panels and they use bikes. The government has made special bike routes on the streets. While Norway already has a vast supply of water sources, the government encourages water conservation. I grew curious to learn more about why the government of Norway encourages a sustainable lifestyle for it's citizens. Why do they care so much? The answer is simple and yet powerful.

ICONIC BUILDING The Sydney Opera House is the most photographed architectural works and "a masterpiece of 20th century architecture" as stated by UNESCO. The innovative design came from the Danish architect Jørn Utzon. He was relatively unknown until January 29, 1957 when his entry to the international competition for a national opera house at Bennelong Point, Sydney was announced the winner. He was only 36 years old.

Most of what you do has little impact on your results. A vital few things you do create nearly all your results. If you improve the vital few, you can easily achieve your target.

The Birth Of 80/20 In 1906, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto created a mathematical formula to describe the unequal distribution of wealth in England, observing that 20% of the people owned 80% of the land.

Feeling that England had become an economically unfair place, he was stunned when he applied it across European country borders. Again, 80% of the land was owned by only 20% of the population.

Then when he applied the same calculations back through time, he found the same thing: the top 20% controlled 80% of the wealth.

The Vital Few Versus The Trivial Many After Pareto made his observation and created his formula, Dr. Joseph Juran, working in the US in the 1930s and 40s, recognized a universal principle he called the 'vital few and trivial many'. As a result, Dr. Juran discovered that 20% of the defects on a production line were causing 80% of the problems.

The top 20% of authors sell 80% of the books.

The top 20% of criminals commit 80% of crime.

The 80-20 principle is everywhere Consider these 80-20 assumptions Do 20% of your clothes get worn 80% of the time?

Do 20% of the people you know contribute to 80% of your happiness?

Do 20% of your projects, clients or customers account for 80% of your work (or your profits)?

Am I right?

An exercise Answer these questions and contemplate these for your time planning: What are the right things that you ought to be doing that will give you the maximum benefits?

What are your Vital Few? Spend more time on these.

What are the wrong things that you end up doing that have least or no impact on your quality of life? What are your Trivial Many?

Write a ‘not to do’ list for these and eliminate them from your time table slowly and eventually.

What are the have to do things-80% Activities?

Reduce your time on these. Or set a timeline, delegate, bunch them together and spend as little time on these as possible.

The beautiful building is comprised of three groups of interlocking shells, which house two main performance halls and a restaurant. The roof is made of precast concrete forms clad in white tiles. Utzon wanted the 'shells' to look like bright sails on the Australian dark waters.The Opera House was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in October, 1973. In 2003, Jørn Utzon was awarded with the Pritzker Architecture Prize and he was praised for his visionary design as being "far ahead of available technology." A masterpiece of modern architecture, the opera house has become an iconic symbol of both Sydney and Australia.

TO BUILD OR NOT TO BUILD IS THE ?

We just wrapped up the Permit Drawings for a 12,000 sq. ft. estate home in the beautiful Great Falls area.

The Owners are extremely dedicated in the design process and therefore a delight to work with. The house is designed keeping in mind the ancient design principals of Vedic Architecture.

2020 was a memorable year for everyone around us. Some have thrived, while others have weathered the storm and some have shriveled. The housing market is however sizzling hot with historically low mortgage rates and investors are making it big. The question however remains perched on the minds of most people: 'Should we move forward with our project or should we wait until the season changes?' There may not be a quick answer to this question but in one word I would say, 'Go ahead and become project ready.' And this simply means to have your design permit ready, specifications ready and general contractors shortlisted. I would also suggest to price the job to get an idea of where you actually stand with your budget. Building prices are on the rise with the exponential rise on fuel prices. So if you have the funds, then begin building, because the more you wait the more you might pay. We currently have a few savvy clients who are engaged in design work and would like to have their design ready for summer months and the coming year. So to sum it up, go ahead and plan to build, but first become design ready asap.

Along with our daily design work in the studio, we also believe in giving back to the community and regularly volunteer for good causes. Aparna is part of the Construction Committee for a 14,500 sq. ft. Vipassana Meditation Center that is coming up in Austin county, Texas.

Aparna is also working on a book that will be published soon. This book is about the Space Planning Principles of Vedic Architecture. The book will be available on Amazon and will provide an insight into the ancient design principals and the five elements of nature and how these are applied in space planning. It is going to be an interesting read.
