The Jewish Museum Holds the 37th Annual Purim Ball
The Jewish Museum held its 37th Annual Purim Ball at the Plaza and raised a record $3.2 million for the Museum. Over 1,200 distinguished guests were in attendance for the festive dinner and after party hosted by the Jewish Museum’s Young Patrons group. The event honored Brad S. Karp, chairman; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and Bang on a Can, the multi-faceted performing arts organization. A special tribute to Claudia Gould, who is stepping down as the Museum’s director in June, was given by the Museum’s Board Chairman Robert Pruzan.
Guests were greeted by poodles, the unofficial mascot of the Museum’s Purim Ball. Karp was introduced by Eric S. Goldstein, CEO of UJA Federation, and Bang on a Can was introduced by Michael Kushner, executive vice president, business & legal affairs and general counsel, Atlantic Records and Bang on a Can board president.
The historic plaza was transformed by David Stark Design and Production, with decor inspired by the Museum’s exhibition, “The Sassoons.” Guests were escorted to dinner with an electrifying performance by the Grammynominated musical collective Innov Gnawa. Dinner began with a surprise performance by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City singing an original composition by Bang on a Can. The Choir of Trinity Wall Street closed the dinner program with a rousing performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Throughout the evening, guests were treated to tarot card readings by Larry & Raven: The ESP Couple, enjoyed the signature cocktail Pomegranate Rosemary Tito’s Fizz, made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka and took their photos at the Smilebooth. Music was provided by DJ Timo Weiland.

Brasserie Cognac Restaurant Opens Second Location in Hotel 48LEX
Beloved French Affair Welcomed by Hotel Guests and Welcomed Back by Midtown Diners
Photographer: Alejandro Peno
Brasserie Cognac has debuted its second location at Hotel 48LEX. From the founders of Serafi na Restaurant Group, the restaurant’s newest location brings its authentic French cuisine inside one of Midtown’s most luxurious and upscale boutique hotels. Located on the hotel’s main floor and accessible through the lobby and its Lexington Avenue entrance, the restaurant is now open.
Restauranteurs Vittorio Assaf & Fabio Granato of Serafi na Restaurant Group brought their love of French culture and cuisine to NYC by providing patrons with an authentic taste of France when they opened the fi rst of their
family of French restaurants, Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur de Ballon in April of 2008. After 10 years of business, the two decided to close their doors to focus on other endeavors for the Serafi na brand including the five openings of Café Serafi na.
Brasserie Cognac East, opened in the Upper East Side in May of 2013, offers patrons a twostory space with options to dine in its outdoor sidewalk café, main dining room, lively bar or private Cognac Room. With the success of this location and the expansion of the Serafi na brand, it was only natural to bring their French cuisine back to midtown. Brasserie Cognac’s newest location offers the same menu in addition to a raw bar and a happy hour with oyster and
wine pairings unique to this location.
Brasserie Cognac at Hotel 48LEX features dishes such as the signature Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare, prepared with wasabi, avocado and ponzu sauce; the Signature Chicken Salad with green apple and cranberries and Branzino, atop roasted artichokes, capers, cherry tomatoes and espelette sauce. Plus, diners will start their experience with the adored basket of delightfully light & airy Gougeres (warm cheese puffs). Open daily for lunch, dinner, in-room dining and breakfast (coming soon), the 85-seat open dining room combines the hotel’s sleek high-end design and the traditional intimate and elegant design of its sister restaurant to offer guests a true French dining experience.

Francesca’s Acquisition, LLC, a specialty retailer operating a nationwide chain of Francesca’s and Franki by Francesca’s boutiques, providing customers with unique and carefully curated fashion, accessories, jewelry and lifestyle products, has announced a new campaign to celebrate its Fran Club loyalty program and Free To Be You brand platform, tapping regional brand ambassadors to create custom campaign content for the first time.
The campaign, filmed during Francesca’s Miami Fran Club event for customers, brand loyalists, local associates and Fran Club members, was brought to life in partnership with Elevate Pictures, a transmedia entertainment company that produced both the commercial video spot and the live event. With a unique approach to storytelling, the event and commercial spot were intertwined, showcasing Francesca’s new Spring product collection and its #FreeToBeYou brand story through the support and involvement of loyalty members, ambassadors and associates themselves.
“We see incredible value in engaging directly with our community to celebrate self-expression and the unique sense of style the Francesca’s customer has,” said Jann Parish, chief marketing officer, Francesca’s. “By working alongside incredible local Miami talent and incorporating our customers and associates, we are building a brand that rewards our best customers and showcases that within this campaign. We are approaching acquisition in a unique way by creating an exclusively inclusive community that future customers will want to be a part of. It’s not just about shop now, it’s about building trust and creating a connection.”
To better understand core audience needs, in 2022 Francesca’s conducted an in-depth study to develop key customer personas: the always on trendsetter, intentional shopper and fast fashionista. This campaign speaks to those personas specifically, showcasing key styles and looks as well as regional significance in a core Francesca’s market.
Francesca’s launched its Fran Club in October 2022 to reward loyal shoppers and create a community through hosted events and engagements. In response to a customer interest in circular fashion, Francesca’s brought Forever Francesca’s to life, allowing consumers to recycle older styles from any brand for store credit.
“We’re constantly innovating and adapting to bring Francesca’s customers what they want, when they want it. From The Fran Club to Forever Francesca’s, to this latest campaign, we prioritize what will make the shopping experience more rewarding and how we can continue to earn trust within the brand community we’re building – recognizing our best and welcoming new customers.” said Parish.

Victoria’s Secret Announces Return of Adriana Lima With New Heavenly Eau de Parfum Campaign
Victoria’s Secret has announced the newest Heavenly Eau de Parfum campaign, highlighting the brand’s timeless fragrance with global fashion icon, mother and advocate, Adriana Lima. This fragrance campaign marks her return to the brand, with more to come throughout the year.
Captured by visionary Photographer Sølve Sundsbø, Lima embodies Heavenly’s signature warmth and luminous glow within the campaign. The imagery evokes a light and airy ambiance, a nod to the fresh and sophisticated notes within the perfume. The reimagined bottle was designed to complement the timeless radiance of the fragrance.
“I’m so excited to be working with Victoria’s Secret again, the brand has always been like family to me. Being the face of this iconic campaign and fragrance is so special because it beautifully compliments a woman’s radiance, which is symbolic of Victoria’s Secret’s inspiring mission of celebrating every woman. It was amazing being on set again with everyone, and we had the best time bringing this message to life through this timeless fragrance,” said Lima.
“It is an honor to have a global icon return as the face of our new Heavenly Eau de Parfum campaign. Adriana is not only a beloved part of the Victoria’s Secret family, but she also encapsulates the essence that makes this fragrance a treasured favorite. As always, Adriana’s captivating energy on the set of this campaign brought the glamorous and luminous feel of this fragrance to the next level, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone,” said Tracy Deleu, vice president of creative for Victoria’s Secret Beauty & Pink.
This Eau de Parfum opens with a hint of effervescent fruits, and transitions into a bouquet of romantic white florals at its heart: freesia, lotus and jasmine. Enveloped in gold musk, creamy sandalwood and bourbon vanilla, this signature fragrance is pure, sophisticated warmth.
The full Heavenly collection also includes Heavenly Dream Angel Eau de Parfum, a radiant gourmand fragrance that includes notes of raspberry nectar, amber crystals and prismatic musk. The facets within the fragrance reveal a bright strength with tender depth; the bright sister to a luminous classic.

“Bad Cinderella”
S. OTTOMANELLI & SONS MEATS
Ottomanelli is the oldest family-owned and -operated meat retailer in New York. The family has been selling high-quality meats and wild game since the early 1900s. It offers prime cuts and exotic meat, among other products. With many New Yorkers waiting out the COVID-19 pandemic in the Hamptons,
The Title Says It All
BY ROBERT MASSIMI
Not since “Starlight Express” has Andrew Lloyd Webber written such a lackluster musical. The songs you hear throughout the musical “Bad Cinderella” at The Imperial Theatre go in one ear and out the other and are long forgotten even before the final curtain drops. Emerald Fennell’s book is nothing to really get excited about either. The premise here is that we visit a town called Belleville where only the beautiful people live; Cinderella is considered bad because she is seen as ugly, and because she spray painted on Prince Charming’s statue “beauty sucks.” Wow. Deep!
The whole show is a confusing piece of garble, flavored with outrageously garish costumes (Gabriela Tylesova). Tylesova does a great job, however, with the scenic design. Director Laurence Connor reaches for the campy, the cheap laughs and clearly panders to the diverse audience members. Based on gay themes as well as a clear message that we only look toward the outside rather than the inherent good in people, “Bad Cinderella” has too weak of a plot to be taken as good theater and any message it tries to serve is lost in the confusion.
featuring paintings, photography, sculptures and mixed media installations by artists in the advertising industry. The show included artworks by 135 contemporary artists on the 22 screens of the Oculus. mvvoart.com
GABRIELA GIL
Cinderella (Linedy Genao) is for the most part good; she has a nice singing voice, delivers the “business” nicely and can dance. In the lead role, however, she is not a big enough talent to deliver like many of today’s stars on Broadway can. The same holds true for Prince Sebastian (Jordon Dobson). Dobson cannot deliver the way a star should, he is too one-dimensional and at times, flat. While Carolee Carmello as the Stepmother and Grace McLean as the Queen are very good, the rest of the cast for the most part goes through the motions where the acting is concerned.
Artist Gabriela Gil connects elements of the immediate present through the use of line, color and rhythm. This combination in her painting reflects an admiration for both nature’s softness and the human instinct to connect.
Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Gil has moved throughout South and North America her entire life. The constant migration has shaped her multicultural perspective and nurtured her interest in art as a way to transcribe her personal experience using a unique visual language. Her studio is based in New York. She will hold her first solo art exhibit showcasing her work on December 3. gabrielagil.com
Bruno Poet’s lighting is nicely done to complement the story, particularly the musical part of the show. JoAnn M. Hunter’s choreography ranges between decent and ridiculous. At one point in the show, the audience has to watch a Chippendale version of dancers doing push-ups and lifting weights shirtless and in leather pants.
DOMENICO VACCA
Luxury men’s and women’s fashion designer Domenico Vacca has reopened his flagship store on Madison Avenue. Born in Italy, Vacca‘s family has been deeply-rooted in the craft of fashion for decades. In 2002, Vacca launched his own label and opened his flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, spearheading the sartorial trend in fashion. domenicovacca.com
“Bad Cinderella” holds to the basic story of the sisters, the mean stepmother and the ball dropping at midnight. Only here the sisters are beyond annoying, Adele (Sami Gayle) has such a nasal voice that she is hard to hear, and her sister Marie (Morgan Higgins) has a hairstyle similar to Lady Gaga and uses all the cutesy phrases that don’t add up to anything meaningful, nor funny. If all of this is not distracting enough, the constant turnstile staging left most of the audience with vertigo by the show’s end.

Presenting The Full Mugler H&M Collection
The look-book for the Mugler H&M collection is here. The collection is true Mugler and every piece is defined by Mugler’s irrepressible energy: playful, youthful, body-positive and open to every individual’s identity.
The womenswear silhouette includes Mugler’s signature oversized shoulders with a cinched waist, shaping the body. There are many modern expressions of the house codes, including spiral multi-seaming, which runs throughout the collection in the form of baggy jeans, nylon and denim bonded thong jeans and jackets. Other highlights include leather jackets and a leather trench coat with an elongated scarf detailing, dresses with decadent embellishments and strong tailoring, which can be paired with illusion catsuits, leggings or cut-out bodysuits.
The menswear assortment features a collection of leather styles including trousers, blazers and a trench coat with engraved buttons. The denim selection includes a sculpted jacket with padding that accentuates the form. Sharp tailoring can be layered with see-through flocked
star print tops and corseted tanks. The collection offers an array of gender-fluid accessories including sheer gloves and tights, bags and scarves. A Conversation with Matthew Stone, IYC Yacht Broker of The Year
BY SUSAN KIME
36 MANN ABOUT TOWN • MAY 2023 ON THE UPSWING
Photos courtesy of IYC (International Yachting Company)
Matthew Stone has devoted more than half his life to the yachting industry. Growing up in South Florida, Stone realized early that he felt more comfortable on and in the water than on land, so his interest and comfort with sailing became his passion and became his career. It was in 2016 that he moved from being a yacht captain to a yacht broker, and in 2020, he was nominated for the coveted International Yacht Broker’s Association (IYBA) award for Outstanding Young Professional in Yachting. In 2018, 2019 and 2022, he earned Broker of the Year.
His professional growth accelerated recently, as he now represents International Yachting Company (IYC), one of the largest and most reputable global brands in yachting. In November of 2022, IYC opened its doors to the San Diego yachting market, with its new offices on Shelter Island, on Mission Bay. Stone leads the team, where he and his team have listings and multiple others in the pipeline. We recently spoke with him about his winning Broker of The Year and how the future looks for the yachting industry.
Were you surprised when IYC chose you as Broker of The Year, and why did they
choose
you?
I knew many were in the conversation for Broker of The Year, but yes, I was surprised they chose me. Yet, I did know that I sold 1,100 feet worth of yachts. That means, basically, I sold many 150foot and 140-foot yachts and so on. This is a good way of defining a parameter of success because yacht pricing goes up and down, but the yacht dimensions stay the same.
In an earlier article about the yachting business, I read that selling a yacht is sometimes like selling a home. Can you discuss this a little?
While there are some parallels between the process of selling a yacht to that of selling real estate, the sales processes seem very different to me. The complexity of buying a yacht is far more rigorous than a house. You’re dealing with complex equipment surrounded by saltwater in most cases. And in many cases, we, as salespeople, must remember that many of those who come looking for a yacht are not always completely aware of what they want. We must peel the layers of the onion, so to speak, but thankfully we know how to do it. We ask how often they will use it, if and how many members of the family will use the yacht, what experience they have in yachting, what they are looking for in a crew and things like that.
Another example is most people need real estate, you don’t need a yacht, and for that reason alone, you may only have a handful of people that could be prospective clients for a particular yacht. Additionally, when purchasing a yacht, you are buying an ultimate luxury asset. Lastly, in my opinion, there is far more emotion when purchasing a yacht; it’s a lifestyle, a lifelong dream, a passion, and at times there are even elements of impulse. But most people don’t impulsively buy real estate.
Has IYC partnered with any substantial boat builders in the past year?
Yes, we have just partnered with Cantiere Delle Marche, or CDM, a shipyard in Ancona, Italy, on the Adriatic. There will be more about this in the coming weeks.
Have you seen the luxury yacht market evolve over the past few years?
Yes, absolutely, and in all facets of the industry, starting with construction methods and ending with the consumer. Technology advancements making yachts more efficient and safer. Diesel alternatives are allowing yacht owners to operate their vessels in an environmentally responsible way. The consumer (and how they use the vessel) is also evolving, with several new buyers entering the marketplace to get family, friends and loved ones together in the safest environment possible.
Finally, where do you see the high-end yacht market growing or contracting over the next five years?
We no doubt see that the yachting market will continue to grow. We continue to see new buyers enter the marketplace who want to enjoy time with family, friends and loved ones in a controlled environment. Experienced owners’ needs and wants are evolving, and IYC will evolve with them.

Fashion Social Media and Branding Consultant
By Bennett Marcus
Meet Sofie Mählkvist, a 24-year-old fashion social media consultant. Mählkvist currently is working to get her master’s degree from Harvard University in Fashion Marketing Management, and she spent her undergrad at Regent’s University London, where she graduated with honors in Fashion Marketing and Global Management. She divides her time between London, Paris and New York. Still in her early 20s, Mählkvist is wielding the tools of her generation, establishing herself as a consultant to fashion companies on how to utilize social media to increase brand awareness and drive sales.
ON THE UPSWING

Mählkvist’s clients represent a wide range of fashion industries, and she is deft at developing strategies for branding and marketing that are unique to each situation. She offers various levels of service to suit any firm’s needs and budget, from a simple plan on what to post that the client can carry out themselves over a period of time to full-on creative consultancy on every facet of a business.
Fashion footwear
For Paris-based footwear company Iindaco, a start-up at the time, its founders were talented designers who admittedly knew nothing about marketing and were not prepared to spend money on advertising.
Mählkvist began by looking at who their customers are, posting to Instagram and engaging with them, and then reaching out to celebrities and influencers with whom they might identify.
To this end, Mählkvist employed more traditional methods of public relations, persistently reaching out to stylists with the product. A paparazzi photo of Miley Cyrus wearing their shoes helped to jump-start interest, and later Kendall Jenner and others were seen in them, all without spending advertising dollars.
Keeping tabs on the changing social media landscape
“Platforms nowadays are made for growth; you just have to help them help you grow, doing things that are popular and trendy at the moment,” said Mählkvist. “And if you have a brand, you don’t have time to keep up with that, we’re researching these trends. So, it’s a time-saver, and for someone who doesn’t know the platforms, what I do is also educational.”
Social media is constantly changing. The shoe brand strategy took place a year ago, and now, Mählkvist explains, the Instagram and social media community is somewhat different in general because of the growth of TikTok and the influence of reels.
TikTok replacing Google for searches
Increasingly, people are searching on TikTok rather than Google because they get a visual sense from people they follow and trust. Say you want to look up restaurants in London, you see where people are on TikTok. “You’d rather see your favorite influencer recommending where to go and where the cool crowd is, and you don’t really know who is giving those reviews on TripAdvisor or Yelp,” she said.
And with short attention spans, people are using TikTok to learn how to do something in 10 seconds rather than watch YouTube tutorials.
“People don’t really go nowadays to Google and YouTube to search for those things, so that’s what you have to do now as a brand because that’s how you can also grow,” Mählkvist said.
B2B AI healthcare tech brand
For a B2B AI healthcare startup, Mählkvist came in for a one-time consultation, preparing a three-month calendar to get the brand started on social media. “I created a project package for them, saying, ‘October 25th, you’re going to post this and use this hashtag,’ so they can just look at that and don’t have to think about it,” Mählkvist said. The company wanted a presence on social media but didn’t have the need for someone full-time and they can call on Mählkvist when questions arise. They’re not selling a product to the public, like shoes, they’re selling their software to other businesses. “They’re engineers and didn’t want to have to create a TikTok or know how to cut a reel, and don’t really have time for that,” she said.
Customized strategy for each client
There are so many possibilities now to try to score that algorithm, said Mählkvist. “That’s what I am trying to focus more on when I work with a brand now: how do you actually work the algorithm so people stumble upon your profile?” Of course, she also advises on strategies for paid ads. “But you have to do those right as well.”
Philanthropic Work
Mählkvist is a chair member of the Junior League’s London branch and works with charities in Latin America supporting child and animal welfare and environmental preservation.

CASIO TO RELEASE NEW EDIFICE INCORPORATING DESIGN FEATURES FROM THE NISMO ACE RACING CAR
Casio Computer Co., Ltd. has announced the release of the latest addition to the Edifice line of timepieces based on the brand concept of “Speed and Intelligence.” The ECB-2000NIS, named the NISMO MY23 Edition to signify “Model Year 2023,” is clad in graphics from the NISMO works team’s ace race car.
NISMO is a works team of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. that engages in motorsport activities. The EDIFICE line of high-performance timepieces inspired by a motorsports worldview has been a NISMO supporter since 2021. The two brands are natural allies that share a passion for leveraging cutting-edge technology in pursuit of ultimate performance.
The new ECB-2000NIS is a high-performance chronograph that incorporates design elements from the body of the NISMO works team’s #23 Nissan Z race car that has been competing in Japan’s most prestigious motorsport race, the SUPER GT.
The new watch is based on the EDIFICE ECB-2000, which features a carbon fiber-reinforced resin case and a unique race car suspension-inspired design. Modeled after the color scheme of the race car as viewed from the side, the entire watch features a two-tone shift from red in the 12 o’clock direction to black in the 6 o’clock direction. A graphic pattern interlacing with the “Z” logo appearing on the car is incorporated into the dial design in the upper section. The number of the Nissan/NISMO race car, “23,” adorns the 23-minute position. A section of the bezel’s edge is tapered to create a sharp curved-line form inspired by the roofline of the car, which evokes the look of a Japanese sword. Such elements from the body of the car are expressed in multiple aspects of the watch design.

The Wallace Lounge, Uptown-Chic, Opens at The Wallace Hotel
Located in The Wallace Hotel, tucked away just off Broadway on West 76th Street, The Wallace Lounge is a stylish cocktail bar and piano lounge that opened on March 1. Seeing an opportunity to support the Upper West Side’s vibrant cultural community, Concept Creator and Operator Andrea Loscalzo—owner of Upper West Side mainstay Salumeria Rosi—had a cocktail bar and piano lounge in mind from the moment he first saw the space. Loscalzo has tapped into the cultural roots of the neighborhood’s history with opera, jazz and theater, empowering creativity and deepening the art of live music and bringing its essence to The Wallace Lounge. Situated one block from the Beacon Theater and a short walk from Lincoln Center, it is the ideal location for the community to enjoy great music, cocktails and light bites in a beautifully designed space for a night out, or a pre- and post-theater destination.
The Wallace Lounge is separated from the hotel lobby by a brass mesh curtain. Designed with a Neo-Deco fashion that marries the concept with the history of the hotel, the lounge area walls are bathed in a deep blue with walnut wood tambour accents with royal blue, brown and forest green velvet seating to allow guests to feel comfortable and relaxed, complete with a Lilac Marble fireplace and 5’9” Mason & Hamlin Grand Piano that was built in 1926 and has been tuned and restored by Ingo Hofmann. The bar area is anchored by a beautiful dark walnut and leather service bar that sits in front of a botanical-themed hand painted mural from acclaimed artist Jean Larson.
To curate The Wallace Lounge experience, Loscalzo is drawing from his hospitality background that has helped to solidify Salumeria Rosi as a neighborhood staple and maintain its high quality of service and food. He has enlisted Beverage Director Simon Sebbah (Grand Tour Hospitality) to design the cocktail program and Sommelier Chris Miller (The Lambs Club) to develop the wine program.
The cocktail program was built for connoisseurs to indulge in the classics—with a twist headlined by the house signature, The Wallace Martini, a choice of Grey Goose or Tanqueray No. 10 with dry vermouth and bitters. The rest of the drinks are a play on a storied beverage, like The Gin & Tonic, made with Amazzoni Tropical Gin, grapefruit and tonic water; the UWS Sparks, made with St. Germain, yellow grapefruit, bitters and Champagne and the Baïka Martini, made with Grey Goose,
olive brine and caviar.
Andrea has carefully curated the menu of light bites to pair well with the elevated cocktail and wine programs. Under the snacks section is a well-chosen selection of imported salumi and cheeses from Salumeria Rosi. Cold bites highlight hickory Smoked Beef Tartare on a rice cracker, topped with poached quail egg, gold leaf and nasturtium, presented in a smoking cloche; Caviar Brioche, comprised of Petrossian Caviar on a toasted butter brioche bun from Balthazar Bakery with a dollop of house made crème fraiche and The Wallace Garden, comprised of brightly colored seasonal vegetable crudité with fresh salsa verde consisting of parsley, anchovies, vinegar, capers and egg yolk. The warm bites section features Tempura Shrimp, four oversized prawns fried in a very light rice flour batter served like lollipops with ponzu aioli; Wagyu Beef Sliders, a pair of two-ounce wagyu beef patties topped with brie cheese, lettuce, tomato and smoked sauce on a brioche bun; Classic Club Sandwich, double layered with grilled chicken, tomato, lettuce, honey-glazed bacon and mayo and Truffle Potato Croquettes, served with truffle mayonnaise, topped with sliced fresh black truffle.
Petrossian Caviar Program:
The Wallace Lounge also showcases a Petrossian Caviar program, served by the tray accompanied with egg whites, egg yolks, shallots, chives, capers, crème fraiche and mini blinis. The options include 50 grams of Royal Kaluga, Royal Ossetra and Royal Alverta caviar, as well as 250 grams of Classic Baïka. To pair with the caviar, The Wallace Lounge will offer Champagne by the glass utilizing a Coravin Sparkling Wine System so guests can indulge in Lanson, NV “Le Black” Champagne and Perrier Jouet NV “Blanc de Blancs.”
Sweet bites include Pistachio Cheesecake topped with roasted pistachios and Maldon salt as well as Millefoglie, a mini puff pastry with vanilla Chantilly cream, topped with fresh raspberry.
Rounding out the experience is a concise, global wine program that offers 13 wines by the glass, one rosé, four red and white wines including Benton Lane 2021 Pinot Noir, Iconoclast 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Feudi di San Gregorio 2021 Falanghina, Botanica 2021 Chenin Blanc, as well as four sparkling wines and Champagne. Included in the wine list is a selection of certified Kosher wines.

Adoctor who knows you well, has the time to talk things through, and is available to help when you are in need. This kind of strong physician-patient relationship is important to good health—but is all too rare in today’s medicine.
The Mount Sinai Health System is answering the call for personalized care with many initiatives; the latest is a new comprehensive concierge medicine program in the Palm Beaches, Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care. Following Mount Sinai’s highly regarded concierge medicine program in Hudson Yards, New York City, the new program provides personalized, patient-centered health care, including unlimited and seamless access to leading specialists, a tailored preventive health and wellness program, travel medicine consultations, nutrition counseling and treatment planning, coordination and health management. Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care will soon be moving to its new location at The Square, in downtown West Palm Beach.
“With this new program, we’re staying very focused on our mission, which is to keep people healthy and provide exemplary patient-centered care at the highest level,” said Joshua Kugler, MD, medical director of Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care. “We have pioneers in many fields of medicine, both locally and internationally, so we can offer access to a very deep group of specialists at any time of the day or night.”
While the concierge medicine concept is not new, concierge programs differ widely in quality, cost and services provided. A basic model might offer primary care, often with no or limited access to specialists, for a monthly or annual fee. In contrast, Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care offers a wide range of services, as well as access to the full resources of the renowned Mount Sinai Health System, including access to the Hudson Yards concierge practice in New York for members who travel back and forth throughout the year. Services are coordinated, navigation is easier and faster than in many traditional models and there is a strong emphasis on prevention.
Concierge medicine patients have immediate access to Mount Sinai Health System specialists locally and in New York, where The Mount Sinai Hospital is nationally ranked in 11 specialties, including cardiology, geriatrics, neurology/neurosurgery and orthopedics. “Our goal, of course, is to keep all of our patients out of the hospital while we provide them customized, comprehensive care,” said Dr. Kugler.
Wellness, Longevity, Specialty Care
South Florida traditionally has been viewed as home to an aging population of retirees, Dr. Kugler noted. But Palm Beach, like much of the rest of the world, has changed since the pandemic. “Today, older adults who used to be ‘snowbirds’ are now spending more and more time here, and we are seeing a growing younger demographic, as well,” he said. “What is common to both is an increasing interest in a healthy lifestyle and longevity. So, we’ve embedded services to support wellness as part of our concierge care, including annual cardiology assessments with specialists, pulmonary care and testing, annual skin exams— critically important given sun exposure here—and even spa services with an aesthetician.”
Mount Sinai New York doctors have been delivering high-quality care in Palm Beach for many years and are well known and respected in the community, Dr. Kugler said. The new concierge care program extends and expands its services, accessibility and

patient-centered care resources, including patient navigators to help coordinate care. “When a patient gets sick after hours in the traditional medical world, they often end up in urgent care or an emergency room, where they are met by somebody they don’t know, who is not familiar with their care and has to start from scratch to try to understand what is going on and how medications and everything else play into the presenting issue. This can come at a high cost to the patient and to the health care system, with unnecessary repeat testing and time spent regathering basic information such as family and personal medical histories,” Dr. Kugler explained. “On the other hand, the concierge physician does not need to repeat tests or ask questions they already know the answers to, because they know the patient. In addition, it’s easier for me to rapidly refer to or consult with a top-notch specialist if needed.”
Plenty of Time
A recent survey by “Concierge Medicine Today” reported the top reasons patients leave their current physician in search of a concierge medicine physician. High on the list are long wait times, feeling like a number and a physician spending less than 15 minutes per visit.
Concierge physician Raiza Lopez, MD, an internist who focuses on preventive care,
screenings and disease management and treatment, said these concerns don’t exist in Mount Sinai’s concierge care system. “My goal as a primary care physician is to be a partner with my patients in their health journey. I want to have the time to not only treat them when they are sick, but also to offer preventive medicine so they stay healthy and to help them achieve their wellness goals.”
“I love the concierge practice, because when patients come in, they don’t wait,” Dr. Lopez added. “They’re greeted at the front desk and quickly taken to the room where their visit with me happens, and very often their treatment as well.”
In most traditional medical settings, a primary care physician has 15 or 20 minutes, at most, per patient visit. “That time is used not only for the doctor, but also for the medical assistant to do an initial intake, check vital signs and verify medications, allergies and other conditions,” Dr. Lopez said. “In the remaining time, the primary care physician has to listen to the patient’s concerns, address why they are there, and review lab results and other follow-ups from the previous visit to see how they’re doing after the treatment they were given. Then at the end, the doctor has to come up with a plan specifically tailored for that patient to move forward. Even someone who is not a physician realizes that 15
minutes is hardly enough time to do all that well.”
“With concierge care we have ample time,” she continued. “Some of our appointments are 30 minutes to an hour—that’s double and sometimes four times the time that a traditional primary care physician is spending.” In addition to addressing medical issues during a concierge care visit, Dr. Lopez can talk with the patient about lifestyle issues such as what they are eating, how much exercise they’re getting and when and where they’re going on vacation. “All that is important,” she said. “It’s not just about disease and medications— it’s about the patient as a human being.”
The convenience of having testing services onsite can’t be overestimated, for both patients and doctors, Dr. Kugler said. Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care provides onsite imaging (X-ray and ultrasound) and laboratory services, saving time and money, and with faster access to results. “Concierge care’s time has come,” he said. “The benefits are real for patients and for the health care system, as well as for the physicians and specialists who are committed to making a real difference in their patients’ lives.”

Grand Hotel Son Net –Puigpunyent, Mallorca
On this soul-stirring island, the pleasures are simple. Just a 20-minute drive from Palma in the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Tramuntana Mountains, is Grand Hotel Son Net; a stylishly understated, artfilled hideaway on a private Majorcan estate dating back to 1672. Grand Hotel Son Net is today newly independently co-owned and under the acclaimed management of the team behind Finca Cortesin – the enchanting, award-winning Southern Spanish bolt hole in Andalusia – and is being lovingly and meticulously restored with respect and thoughtfulness, to re-emerge in Spring 2023.
Over centuries, this Majorcan manor house was passed down through the hands of several prominent Spanish families and became one of the most prestigious residential estates on the island. With just 31 suites, upon reopening, Grand Hotel Son Net will juxtapose elegant, palatial architecture with
tastefully transformed interiors that are relaxed, romantic and with intimate breath-taking views-for-days, citrus orchards and lush Mediterranean gardens. Famed for its history and classical design, during its transformation, Grand Hotel Son Net will preserve many of the mansion’s original features: rustic beams, stone floors and archways, carved wooden ceilings, antique fireplaces, an original 17th century interior courtyard and spring-fed well and private family chapel. There will also be a curated private art collection.
With a boundless private landscape spanning 57,000 square meters, there will be multiple pools flanked by shaded cabanas, encircled by impeccably tended lawns and flowerbeds that give way to an ecological vegetable and herb garden, small farm and vineyard. Food will all be locally sourced, with native orange and lemon trees growing on the bucolic estate, fresh seafood procured directly from the island and fresh olive oil tastings from a century-old olive press. The vineyard will produce Malvasia white wine that supplies the large,

René Zimmer, managing director, Finca Cortesin Hotels & Resorts, added, “I know Mallorca extremely well, and Grand Hotel Son Net was always a personal firm favorite hotel on the island. Grand Hotel Son Net in fact inspired much of Finca Cortesin in its early years, and it therefore feels very special to recreate – with its own quintessentially Majorcan flair, of course – the essence of Finca Cortesin in Mallorca, and what makes it so unique. I feel confident that the soul of Finca Cortesin is a perfect fit for this island, and the renewed Grand Hotel Son Net will exemplify this.”
The hotel’s setting in the Tramuntana Mountains is one of the main attractions and forms the dramatic backdrop of Grand Hotel Son Net – a haven for walkers and hikers. Cycling is another one of the best ways to see some of the island’s hidden treasures and dramatic countryside. Slowing the pace, quiet country lanes wind to the scent of wildflowers and citrus blossom.

The Estate – La Dolce Vita Reimagined
Comprising a historic 18th century manor house and 24 scattered villas, suites and signature rooms surrounded by tranquil gardens and vineyards, Monaci delle Terre Nere is perfect for those who truly want to immerse themselves in rustic Sicilian country life. It is built on the principles of sustainability and slow food and is the ideal base from which to explore Etna by hike, horse or helicopter, remaining within easy reach of Taormina, Catania and the eastern coast of Sicily.
The estate was originally used by a group of monks of the order of the barefoot Augustinians of Valverde who settled in the area in the 18th century. The monks cultivated the land, planted vineyards and fruits and built a small chapel on the property. Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times, passing from one noble family to another. In 2009, Guido Coffa, a young entrepreneur with a passion for hospitality, purchased the property. Coffa was born and raised in Sicily and had a vision to transform the abandoned estate into an intimate luxury retreat. He spent several years restoring the property, preserving its historic features while adding modern amenities as a labor of love.
The redesigned estate brings a new, more relaxed sense of low-key luxury to Sicily. Uniquely curated from existing foundations, such as mills and animal shelters, each villa has its own special story to tell.
Combining traditional Italian architecture with contemporary design, the villas have been thoughtfully furnished with Sicilian artifacts, antiques and playful art by British Artist Olivier Mourao. A handful have private pools overlooking the sea, while others have been redesigned with large private terraces for families and groups. Many villas also have fireplaces, lava stone walls and original tile features, as well as a large glass façade so guests feel truly immersed in their natural surroundings.
Beyond the gardens and greenery, one is spoiled for choice with an array of activities: guided tours of the estate, private cooking lessons, cocktail masterclasses, group bike excursions, horseback riding, wine tastings, outdoor spa treatments and yoga.
The Gastronomy – Authentic & Refined Authenticity, seasonality and Sicilian origins are what inspires the dining offering at Monaci delle Terre Nere. Set amongst a working vineyard, the estate is planted with organic grapevines, native fruit orchards and abundant kitchen gardens, all from which the local team procures incredible produce for the estate’s restaurant, Locanda Nerello. The restaurant serves traditional Sicilian cuisine fusing ancient flavors with a contemporary flair, to be enjoyed by guests in an exclusive, yet rather relaxed, dining environment; on the terrace overlooking the sea, in the cozy, fireside dining rooms of Locanda Nerello, or within the mysterious ancient millstone of the manor
house. For those seeking more informal dining, the poolside restaurant offers simple, fresh meals determined by seasonal produce and daily harvests.
Mount Etna is the third most important region in Italy for wine production, thanks to the unique climate, rich terrain and variety of volcanic soil. With its own 15-acre winery, Monaci delle Terre Nere also successfully produces six of its own hand-picked wines that are organic, bold, tannic and unapologetically Sicilian – perfect for pairing with the local cuisine. The resort also supplies local wines, international labels and biodynamic Champagne.
The Moment – Sicily
As the island begins to reopen for the 2023 season, Sicily is set to have its biggest year yet. With its picturesque landscapes and magnificent coastlines, rich cultural experiences and historical monuments, Sicily has become one of Europe’s most desirable destinations. Despite increased popularity and appeal, it still feels natural and rugged with a sense of mystery. Travelers should expect an all-encompassing, magical experience when visiting Sicily, for it is the moment.

Tuscany in Bloom
Nestled in the heart of central Italy, Tuscany beckons travelers from all corners of the globe. With its rich history, captivating landscape, delicious cuisine and world-renowned wines, this part of Italy is truly a land of enchantment. Popular during the summer months, Tuscany is also a delightful springtime destination. With mild weather, fewer crowds and abundant natural beauty, it is a perfect spot to immerse yourself in Italian life.
While the blossoms bloom, you will find picturesque villages draped in wisteria and the famous Tuscan hills adorned with verdant greenery and wildflowers. With the average temperature hovering between a temperate 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, this time of year is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, or for the more daring, a hot air balloon ride, offering unforgettable panoramas.
Get lost in a countryside drive, and behind every twist and turn, discover the many unique and charming towns and villages. Home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Tuscany is a cultural gem, and a spring visit allows for easy exploration. There are no descending crowds, packed streets or long lines. The towns of San Gimignano, known for its striking 14 towers; Lucca, famed for its intact Renaissance walls and Siena’s historic medieval center are just a few worth visiting. Time permitting, be sure to include Montepulciano, Pisa and Pienza on your itinerary; and the bustling and vibrant city of Florence is an excellent place to begin your Tuscan journey. Brimming with art and heritage dating back centuries, Tuscany offers an ideal balance of activities for everyone.
Arguably, winemaking is the heartbeat of Tuscany. Here viticulture dates back to the Etruscan era, and today, Tuscan wines are celebrated for their exceptional quality and unique flavor profi les. Heavily regulated by the Italian government, wine producers must adhere to strict practices in order to receive the coveted DOC or DOCG rating, ensuring the quality of the wine. These renowned wines are not just delicious to drink; they are an integral part of the region’s traditions.
Today’s vintages are the culmination of centuries-old methods, innovations and excellence. One of the most famous Tuscan wines is Chianti, grown in

the Chianti region between Florence and Siena. For something slightly more refined, savor a glass of Brunello di Montalcino, produced in the rolling hills of Montalcino. For an inventive twist, Super Tuscan wines offer a fresh approach and new philosophy to winemaking, using a mix of local grapes with those from other locations to create an imaginative blend. Sassicaia, Oreno and Tignanello are among the most famous productions.
Not surprisingly, the winemakers of Tuscany are passionate about and proud of their craft. Visiting one of the area’s vineyards is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the Tuscan way of life, connect with its warm and welcoming people and quite possibly sample some of the world’s most delicious wines.
Pairing perfectly with its wine is the local cuisine. Like its wine, authentic Tuscan cuisine reflects a deep connection to the customs and values of the region. Embracing the farm-to-table principles well before it became fashionable, you will find dishes using the freshest and most flavorful ingredients available. Still today, small, local farms support their communities, providing towns and villages with fresh herbs, fruits, vegetables, cheeses and meats.
To best experience this unpretentious and delicious cuisine, visit one of the many local restaurants known as an “osteria” or “trattoria.” For a more handson approach, reserve a cooking class for an engaging opportunity to learn the art of Italian cooking. In the spring, you can expect recipes showcasing asparagus, fava beans and artichokes. One of our favorite dishes is Panzanella, a simple bread salad mixed with tomatoes, red onion, a hearty dose of olive oil and fresh herbs. For pasta, try Pici all’Aglione, a simple, hand-rolled pasta served with garlic, tomato and a dash of chili pepper, or Tagliatelle al Tartufo, a long delicate pasta tossed in olive oil or butter and topped with seasonal shaved truffles. Meat is a mainstay in Tuscany, and cinghiale or wild boar is a beloved local delicacy, commonly served either braised or as a ragu with fresh pappardelle pasta. Another favorite served throughout the area is Bistecca alla Fiorentina, steak from an ancient breed of Tuscan cattle grilled to perfection and typically topped with course sea salt and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary.
With diverse activities, Tuscany is also home to various accommodations from five-star resorts, charming villas, family-owned properties and agriturismi. For a step back in time, choose a stay at a “Borgo,” many of which are ancient villages converted into hotels. Whether you are looking for a pool with a view, a spa with thermal baths, a step back in time or an active golf retreat, there is a home for everyone in Tuscany.
Awakening from its sleepy winter, spring is an unbeatable time to visit Tuscany. So, pack your bags, prepare to make meaningful connections, create unforgettable memories and fall in love with the Tuscan dream.

The Ultimate Anti-Aging Defense
Photos Courtesy of Peter Thomas Roth
Sunscreen may be synonymous with spring and summer weather. However, the reality is that sunscreen should be applied every day and every season. When used regularly, sunscreen helps to not only prevent sunburn and skin cancer but also signs of premature aging.
In fact, according to the World Health Organization, up to 90 percent of visible signs of aging can be attributed to sun exposure, making sunscreen the ultimate anti-aging defense. Although wearing sunscreen is perhaps the best (and easiest) way to protect your skin’s youthful appearance, the question is, which type of sunscreen should you choose?
To get the answer, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth’s eponymous skin care line is the number one privately-held prestige skin care brand in the USA. Known for creating breakthrough formulas that deliver astonishing results, Roth leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.
The latest product innovation to emerge from Roth’s lab is Max Vitamin D-Fense Sunscreen Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 50. Here, Roth talks about the science behind his new sunscreen and shares his anti-aging
sunscreen tips.
When shopping for sunscreen, what are the most important things to look for?
First of all, you want to make sure the sunscreen you choose has an SPF rating of at least 30. You also want a sunscreen that offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. UVA rays cause signs of aging and UVB rays cause burning, so it’s important that your sunscreen shields your skin from both! All my sunscreens have an SPF rating of 45 and higher and provide complete broad spectrum protection… Brilliant!
Why is Max Vitamin D-Fense Sunscreen Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 50 a great sunscreen option?
Besides having a high SPF 50 rating and providing broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, my new sunscreen is enriched with Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins B5 and E for added anti-aging benefits! This potent combination of ingredients helps to boost your defense against the aging effects of environmental stress.
What makes Max Vitamin D-Fense Sunscreen Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 50 unique?
It’s formulated with 1.5 percent VitaGlow-D, a breakthrough ingredient related to Vitamin D, the “sunshine” vitamin. This scien-
tifically-engineered ingredient deeply moisturizes and leaves all skin types and tones looking gorgeous and radiant. You’re going to love the results!
What are your tips for everyday sunscreen use?
Always apply sunscreen onto your face in the morning, before going outdoors… and don’t forget about your chest, neck and hands! These areas require daily sunscreen as well, because they easily show signs of sun damage and are big giveaways of your actual age. I also recommend reapplying your sunscreen every couple of hours, since the effects can wear off after your initial application.
What if you are unable to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day? It happens! Fortunately, there are some tricks. For example, if you’re walking around outside, try to walk on the shady side of the street to avoid direct sunlight. Or, if you’re driving your car, wear sunglasses and light gloves to protect your delicate eye area and hands—because even though UVB rays can’t penetrate your car windows, UVA rays can! I always keep gloves in the accessory pocket of my car door, so they’re easily accessible. I also keep a light throw blanket handy to drape over my arms while driving. FYI, if you’re in a convertible, a baseball cap and hoodie really work well!

A World Where Aging Can Be Influenced Rebesana
MARGARET BASTICK LUCE | COPY EDITOR: MEG SHEA
Wtime where humans desire a quality of life, and technology is a pivotal tool to achieve it. “Years of scientific research led to the development of Rebesana, an all-inclusive combination supplement. Rebesana is designed to work in the cell. There are hundreds of longevity genes, but three appear to be the most important,” said Rebesana’s Chief Science Officer, Carl P. Giordano, MD. Rebesana is unique in working on all three of these genes, individually and synergistically. In addition, Rebesana also works to maintain the telomeres and blood sugar as well as provide powerful antioxidants.
Rebesana also promotes longevity while working towards eliminating senescent cells. What are senescent cells? These cells, often caused by stress factors, do not die; they produce chemicals that can damage nearby cells. Senescent cells stop dividing and enter a state that tends to impact the growth of normal tissues and organs. “This is why we have included Quercetin, a powerful antioxidant, an element that helps eliminate these cells while combating free radicals and helping maintain our cognitive function,” Dr. Giordano said.
MD, came together to create a supplement that is impactful, powerful and simplistic. The impactful aspect is identifying the key compounds our bodies need to stave off harmful elements while supporting our multifaceted systems. The powerful component brings together specific compounds that work synergistically to elevate our system. The simplistic application refers to six tablets per day, three in the morning and three in the evening. “Safety and efficacy are paramount in choosing doses and sources,” shared Dr. Giordano. With so many living very busy lives, the process of identifying, evaluating and understanding what can support our bio-individualized bodies is a daunting endeavor, no matter what your background.
We have seen a shift in the conversation around the support system for health. Often referred to as the sick care industry, medical professionals, researchers and individuals alike desire to unlock a more effective approach to caring for and supporting our precious bodies. “In the U.S., we wait for diseases to occur, and yes, we have become pretty good at ‘catching up’ with treatment. It’s as though we wait for the ‘disease truck’ to arrive, packed to the brim with all the horrors it can fit. Then we run as fast as we can chasing it, picking up all the pieces that fall off the truck as it bounces and ricochets over every pothole and curb it can hit, creating the most
deliberate and unpleasant ride it can,” Dr. Giordano said.
The goal of the Rebesana team was to bring together a “done for you” supplement that includes five crucial ingredients: Astragalus, Berberine, NMN, Quercetin and Resveratrol. Working in concert, these five ingredients are indispensable. The turning point to control biological aging occurred years ago. “Aging is a fundamental process of turning genes on and off. When gene regulation is lost, cellular identity is lost, and you start to age,” Dr. Giordano said. Rebesana works to toggle those genes to the correct on-off pattern to promote a healthier and longer life.
“Rebesana is a new kind of supplement that draws on innovation and research to slow and influence the aging process in our favor and promote longevity through molecular messaging and other properties,” Dr. Giordano added. Carl Giordano, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who was inspired to provide a product based on innovation and science. He has the commitment to educating the public on the power of using these distinctive elements to slow the aging process and promote a healthier, more athletic life.

Paintings Between Latin America, Africa and Europe
Oswaldo Vigas
The Boca Raton Museum of Art presents “Oswaldo Vigas: Paintings Between Latin America, Africa and Europe” (on view through May 21), a collection of works by the Latin American master which he created in Paris in the 1950s, and in Venezuela from 1969-1976. The exhibition is an homage to the artist by his son, the award-winning filmmaker Lorenzo Vigas – as an intimate lens through the eyes of their father-son relationship, honoring the launch of the new catalogue raisonné of his father’s work. The exhibition features several works that have never been exhibited before in the United States. The paintings are on loan from the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation.
One of Venezuela’s most prolific and influential painters of the twentieth century, Oswaldo Vigas (1923-2014) was recognized for his vision of the Americas. When interviewed in the 1950s and 1960s, Vigas compared his art to his birthplace, saying, “The Americas are a cosmos. Our continent is full of dark signs and warnings: telluric signs and magic that are deep components of our condition. At the same time that they reveal something, these symbols also compromise us in a disturbing world of effervescence. The intention of my painting is to reach them, interpret them and translate them into new warnings. My paintings are halfway between Latin America, Africa and Europe.”
Vigas is known for his singular vision that takes inspiration from his pride in his Mestizo identity, alongside the history, mythology and ancient art of Venezuela mixed with influences from European modernism.
Vigas is celebrated as a towering figure of modernism in Latin America, with a career spanning seven decades. His first solo exhibition in the U.S. was in 1958 in Washington, D.C. Described as “an artist who bridged the gap between pre-Colombian iconography and the experimental art movements of the 20th century,” Vigas received the International Association of Art Critics Award twice (in 2008 and 2014) and was the recipient of the Latin
Union Award in Washington, DC in 2004.
“For South Florida audiences, at the crossroads here of the contemporary Latin American experience, this new presentation of the work of Oswaldo Vigas takes on a whole new meaning at this time in American culture,” said Irvin Lippman, the executive director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. “We are thrilled to partner with the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation, and to welcome the artist’s widow and son to usher in the opening of this powerful exhibition.”
The new Oswaldo Vigas catalogue raisonné may be viewed online at catalogue.oswaldovigas.com. The catalogue was researched by the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation with the support of Axel Stein, the former head of the Latin American Art Department of Sotheby’s. The first online catalogue raisonné of any Venezuelan artist, this valuable resource will allow scholars, curators, collectors and the public to access information about the artist. The catalogue includes over 3,000 paintings, gallery and museum history and publications detailing the artist’s trajectory. The catalogue provides a clear understanding of Vigas’ first works regarding his vision of the Americas, and his period spent in Paris which resulted in his famous Central University of Venezuela (UCV) murals (now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site), and the numerous works he created before his death in Venezuela 2014.
A self-taught painter and muralist, Vigas’ work includes paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, ceramics and tapestries. The artist was featured in more than one hundred solo exhibitions and is represented in numerous public institutions and private collections around the world. He identified as “Mestizo,” a South American term for a person of mixed indigenous and Spanish heritage. As a child, he was keenly interested in the pre-Colombian artifacts and petroglyphs in the region. Although abstraction and figuration can be found in his paintings, Vigas did not want his work to be
labeled as either. A modernist who masterfully blended elements of cubism, surrealism, constructivism and neo-figuration, each painting is imbued with his ongoing exploration into his Mestizo identity. Pre-Colombian lines and figurations can easily be seen in his work. His affinity for the female form and his strong, gestural style are hallmarks of his work. Vigas was a contemporary of Picasso, Ernst, Léger, Calder and Lam, and he became close to these artists while living in Paris during the 1950s and 1960s (especially Picasso, who encouraged Vigas to reflect on notions of ancestry in his work). Vigas was the first artist to represent Venezuela at the Venice Biennale when its national pavilion was inaugurated in 1954, and again in 1962 to organize the Venezuelan section. He was successful in France, where his works were exhibited alongside artists Jean Arp, Chagall, Giacometti, Laurens, Magritte, Matisse and others.
Vigas returned permanently to Venezuela after 12 years because he passionately yearned to contribute to his own country’s art scene by utilizing the knowledge he gained in Europe. Some say this move prevented him from gaining the international traction of his contemporaries in Paris from that era.
This new exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art is a labor of love for the artist’s son Lorenzo Vigas, winner of the prestigious Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival in 2015. He subsequently directed a 2016 documentary about his father’s life entitled “The Orchid Seller” (El Vendedor de Orquídeas) and was recently deeply involved in the creation of his father’s online catalogue raisonné. “The film about my father asks us to reflect on the passage of time, the importance of memories, and above all on the origin of the impulse to create,” said Lorenzo Vigas. “My father’s art was always woven with the primeval roots of Latin American culture, yet he is no longer viewed merely as a ‘Latin American artist’– he is now acknowledged as a modern universal artist.”

New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) celebrated the opening of two highly anticipated exhibitions for Spring. Surfacing a little-known chapter in design history, “Generation Paper: A Fashion Phenom of the 1960s” (on view through August 27) showcases dozens of rare paper garments and accessories. Combining bold graphic design with the era’s space-age experimentation, this enormously popular fashion trend ushered in a new wave of material innovation. With a focus on the use of clay as a tool for critique and satire, “Funk You Too! Humor and Irreverence in Ceramic Sculpture” (on view through August 27) brings together historical Funk ceramics with the work of contemporary artists who are expanding on Funk’s legacy of humor, subversion and expressive figuration.
MAD’s Chair Michele Cohen and Nanette L. Laitman and Director Tim Rogers were joined by MAD Curators Elissa Auther, Barbara Paris Gifford and Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy to welcome guests including Jennifer and Dory Altmann, Joann Blecker, Erik Bottcher, Bruce Gifford, John Kern, Barb Rosenberg, Sally and Peter Saul, Maryn Schiffmiller, Barbara Tober (MAD chair emerita), and artists Genesis Belanger, Almendra Bertoni, Elizabeth Glaessner, Nikki Maloof, Yvette Mayorga and Didi Rojas.
MAD Director of Education Lydia Brawner introduced a curator-moderated conversation with some of the artists from “Funk You Too!,” including Natalia Arbelaez, Sharif Farrag, Salvador Jimenez-Flores and Alake Shilling.

The Jewish Museum
The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU (JMOF-FIU) is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of more than 250 years of Florida Jewish history, arts and culture, with a growing collection of more than 100,000 items. Housed in the original Art Deco-styled buildings of Congregation Beth Jacob, the first synagogue in Miami Beach, JMOF-FIU presents a vibrant schedule of thought-provoking exhibitions.
The original synagogue was built in 1929, and the second, built in 1936, was designed by Art Deco Architect Henry Hohauser and features 80 stained-glass windows, a copper dome and a marble bimah. The two buildings are joined together by the Bess Myerson Gallery, named after former Miss America, Bess Myerson.
JMOF became part of FIU in 2012, creating a historic partnership that leverages the resources of the museum and FIU to ignite a new era of interdisciplinary education and research. Using the lens of the evolving immigration experience of Jewish people in Florida, JMOF-FIU serves as a forum to promote tolerance, further global understanding and create connections to Jewish culture, history, arts and contemporary civic life for diverse audiences. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, JMOF-FIU has achieved a standard of excellence in its methodology for research, collecting, conservation, archiving,
storing and interpreting its holdings.
The museum’s dynamic array of programming includes lectures, workshops, family activities and presentations on topics of Jewish studies worldwide, with international scholars and presenters and local movers and shakers. Popular special events and programs like the South Beach Jewish Walking Tours give visitors an opportunity to see Miami Beach through a unique lens and get an overview of more than 100 years of Jewish history on Miami Beach.
“Arnold Newman: A Retrospective”
“Arnold Newman: A Retrospective” looks at six decades of his photographic portraits. From the 1940s to the early 2000s, Newman photographed many Jewish public figures who have made a significant impact in their respective fields including artists, entertainers, scientists, philosophers and politicians.
Arnold Newman was one of the world’s most prolific, innovative and distinguished portrait photographers. He is considered the “father of environment portraiture,” a style that places its subjects in a carefully composed setting that captures the essence of their work and personality. Each portrait is captioned with personal anecdotes by Newman on the sitting and its famous subject. Using the camera as his tool, Newman viewed his subjects through heart and mind, the result being a very personal and intimate look.

Newman photographed for many publications, including “Life,” “Harper’s Bazaar,” “Look,” “The New Yorker” and “Holiday.” Early in his career, Newman chose photography as the medium for finding his own direction and self-expression. His images for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) shared the same qualities of immediacy and humanistic sympathy as the photographs of Dorothy Lange and Walker Evans. Newman was given his first solo exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1945, published over 14 books, taught and continued to work until he passed away in 2006.
Portraits in the exhibition include: Yaacov Agam, Shmuel Agnon, Woody Allen, Ehud Barak, Saul Bellow, David Ben-Gurion, Leonard Bernstein, Abe Burrows, Marc Chagall, Gen Moshe Dayan, Abba Eban, Otto Frank, Felix
Frankfurter, John Garfield, Chaim Gross, David Halberstam, Isser Harel, Al Hirschfeld, Menashe Kadishman, Louis Kahn, Danny Kaye, Mayor Teddy Kollek, Ibram Lassow, Senator Herbert Lehman, Carlo Levi, Likud Former Prisoners, David Lilianthal, Jacques Lipchitz, Norman Mailer, Stanley Marcus, Golda Meir, Arthur Miller, Zero Mostel, Louise Nevelson, J. The video project is shot entirely in New York City as the Tel Aviv artist was isolated and stayed in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The character, constrained by limited expression and space, continues to navigate daily routines. The faceless protagonist found new relevance with ev eryone around wearing masks, concealing their faces and, inevitably, their facial expressions.
